Ezra's Legacy Steam page launched on july 2022 alongside the first demo. And now, after a bit more than one year, I present you the updated demo!
Aside from a lot of behind the curtain things that the player won't see and won't care (the first demo was developed in godot 3 and this now is a port to godot 4 that was deeply refactored and bugfixed), this demo now is much closer to the final experience the player will have with the final game.
But beware that this is still a free demo. The amount of content you should expect is but a fraction of the final content. The visible changes from the previous demo are as follow:
There are now two stages available! An easy snow mountain themed stage and a hard volcano themed stage, each one with it's own mid boss and main boss.
There are now Main spells and familiars! When you defeat a witch you will obtain a magical gem which will grant you a main spell and a familiar. The main spell is just like the weapons you get in certain games featuring a blue robot, and the familiar is a creature that follows the main character and do things, like the ones you find in another certain game where a half vampire tries to kill his whole vampire dad. In the final game the extra spell must be unlocked at the town but in the demo you get it automatically alongside the main spell. Main spells always use magic points but extra spells may or may not use magic points depending on each one. You may not equip a main spell and a familiar associated with the same magical gem, you have to equip either one or the other.
There are now Max HP and MP booster collectables! Each stage has one (possibly hidden) HP boost collectable and a MP boost collectable which grant you one extra Hud unit worth of HP or MP (one heart or one magic bottle). In the final game the main character starts with three units but in the demo you start with the maximum amount of units minus two, to make the demo easier.
There are now Clothing upgrades! Similar to the armor upgrades in the above mentioned blue robot games, in each stage you can find a (possibly hidden) pedestal which will grant you a clothing upgrade for one of your clothes parts (hat, dress, shoes and broom). There are two separate clothes sets whose parts cannot be mixed but the entire set can be swapped in the main characters house. Each clothing piece will give you a new ability like dashing, which is the most essential upgrade and can be found right in plain sight in the volcano stage.
There are now two menus accessible from the gamepad (or keyboard). One is the game menu which shows all collectibles already found and allows switching between spells and familiars (spells and familiars can also be switched during gameplay using specific gamepad buttons). The second is the options menu with functions like switching the game locale, changing volumes and changing window size.
I expect to be no more content updates for the demo (that means no new stages in the demo), but it will be updated with bugfixes and improvements.
Meanwhile, there is a lot of content that is already done but not in the demo. I cannot give a launch date yet but expect things to go faster from now on. Please follow me on X (formerly twitter) for the quickest updates.
