As part of Remote Play Together 2024, the latest alpha version of Geared for Fear is out now for everyone. Compared to the previous playtest, version 0.7.0 delivers a new car, major performance improvements and other enhancements. In total, this preview contains:
9 vehicles
3 maps
Various weapons
Single-player against bots
6 player split-screen
The current plan is, to keep the playtest running for at least another half a year.
Update 0.6.0 delivers a new map. The image below compares this map (right) to what came before (left).
The update also improves performance and adds a new graphics option: screen-space reflections. The setting is turned off by default, because weaker graphics cards will struggle with it.
Originally, the plan was to release Geared for Fear in Early Access this year. Instead, the ongoing free alpha will continue into next year. There is no planned end date for the alpha, but at minimum, it will last for three more months.
The playtest now features one more vehicle. Gameplay-wise, it should be fully-functional, though the muzzle flash has a tendency to not show up. The update also contains performance optimizations.
This update is should drastically improve performance. There are also some fixes, but no new content. Update 0.5.0 will add a new vehicle, coming in August.
Geared for Fear is now available in form of a playtest. Keep in mind, that the game is still in alpha, with severe performance issues and many missing features.
We are now in the New Year and 2023 will be a rather special year for this game. If everything goes according to plan, the game will launch in Early Access this year. Even the full release might happen in 2023. Despite that, the game will not be part of the Steam Next Fest in February. A game can only participate in one Steam Next Fest and the event takes place multiple times a year. The closer Geared for Fear is to release, the more content can be included in the event demo, so it is worth waiting for a later festival.
The status of the game
At this point, six of the 13 playable vehicles are complete. The current plan is, to only enter Early Access once all of them are finished. I have recently updated the store page, to feature a newer video. The gameplay is also available on YouTube, alongside older footage.
