The fairytale is over. The Hero won. But the story is just beginning. Explore the web of intrigue in this emotional, suspenseful visual novel, where each scene features unique illustrations. Who’s the hero, and who’s the villain? Who lives, and who dies? Your choices will decide.

Shizuka Mitsumori has spent years trying to protect her childhood friend, the Hero, from the perils that assailed him at every turn. At long last, his quest is over. Even during the celebrations, however, new dangers emerge. Dangers more treacherous than monsters. Dangers that threaten the life of the kingdom’s strongest man.
Can the side character save the Hero?
Can you find the happily ever after?

  • Five love interests: Five love interests, each with dramatically different storylines. Who’s the hero, and who’s the villain? Who lives, and who dies? Your choices will decide.
  • Relationship dynamics: Explore each of the protagonist’s varied dynamics with her love interests. Do you prefer nostalgic closeness with the childhood friend? Sharp banter with the rival-turned-comrade? Or a tumultuous relationship with a man who's probably the enemy?
  • Unique, animated illustrations: Actala doesn’t use the traditional reused sprite and occasional CG format. Instead, the entire story is depicted with unique illustrations, similar to an interactive comic book. What’s more — all of these illustrations are animated!
  • Fragments of the Past: As you play, unlock Fragments of the Past. These additional scenes allow you to gain a better understanding of the characters by exploring their pasts before the events of the main story.
  • Timeline: Easily navigate through the story using the Timeline feature.
  • Extensive playtime: The demo will contain over 60,000 words and 4 hours of playtime. (The full game will be over 5 times that!)

Monthly Update (August 2025)

Hello everyone, happy August!\r\n\r\nI\'ve actually been writing monthly devlogs for quite a long time, and I realize now that I\'ve been a little neglectful by not uploading them here! People who only follow me on Steam probably don\'t know that I\'m actively working on the games I have uploaded here If you\'re interested in reading my devlogs for previous months, you can find them on my Patreon page , but I\'ll also be uploading them here from now on.\r\n\r\nI\'ll write up a more thorough status update for each WIP Steam page I have uploaded at a later date, as well as an overview of all the projects that I\'m working on, but as a quick rundown for the games I have Steam pages for: \r\n\r\n

My Husband is a Stranger:

The first half of the game is complete (about 2 hours of playtime). The GUI, backgrounds, and achievements are also complete, and the game is fully outlined. I\'m currently working on the remaining visual assets and script for the second half of the game. I\'m looking to fully release this game in Q1 2026.\r\n\r\n

Karamu Trilogy:

Since I put up the Steam page, this game has gone through a few significant changes, including a game engine change (from Godot to Ren\'py). I\'ve also decided to hire a background artist to do the backgrounds for the last (and longest) game in the trilogy, which has pushed out the release quite a bit (because making quality backgrounds takes a lot of time!) The backgrounds are about 75% complete. The script and VA are 100% done, and I\'m currently working on the visual assets. I\'m looking to fully release this game in Q1-Q2 2026.\r\n\r\n

The Deepwater Witch:

Since I put up the Steam page, this game has also gone through quite a few changes, including the game engine change mentioned previously (from Godot to Ren\'py). I also hired a background artist to update some of the backgrounds I felt were lacking. The script and most of the visual assets for this game have actually been complete for quite some time, but I took a step back from it because I\'m a little unhappy with certain parts of the script and I want to revise it.\r\n\r\n

Actala: The Hero\'s Shadow:

This is the first game that I put up a Steam page for, and my first game in general. It is also by far my biggest title. This project has undergone VERY significant changes since I\'ve started working on it, including three game engine changes (from Unity to Godot to Ren\'py), three rounds of character design changes, multiple script revisions, three rounds of sprites... the list goes on and on. Since this is quite a large project and my first, I want to take the time to get it right. It was originally a completely solo-developed project, which I realized recently was... unrealistic, considering the scope of the game. I\'ve since started working with other artists, including a costume designer and a background artist. My skills in basically every aspect of game development have improved a lot since I first made the Actala demo, so I\'ll be reworking a lot of this game from scratch. I hope you forgive me for taking my time with it - I really do want it to be good. I\'ll also be prioritizing smaller commercial games to help fund this one; the scope is rather massive, and it will take a lot of assets that will take time and money to produce. However, rest assured that I\'m actively working on it. \r\n\r\nNow for the actual devlog!\r\n\r\nGame Description Image\r\n\r\nI took a little bit of a cooldown break at the start of last month, by which I mean I did a lot of little miscellaneous tasks! These included:\r\n\r\n

  • Set up a mailing list and added it to my various pages\r\n
  • Updated the MHIAS pages and builds with links to the Steam page\r\n
  • Worked on project briefs for various artists that I\'m working with \r\n
  • Scheduled some Patreon posts (I actually have a regular schedule now, so there\'ll be things to actually see there I currently have things set up to post at least 4 times a week!)\r\n
  • Sketched and started rendering 6 sprites, with a total of 12 outfit variations!\r\n
  • Put together translation files for translators for MindMindMind and the Karamu Trilogy\r\n
  • Implemented the MindMindMind script into Ren\'py so that I can make the Android/Web build (this won\'t be available here since Steam doesn\'t support Android or Web builds, but it will be available at the other storefront) \r\n

  • Work on the remaining MHIAS script\r\n
  • Code Kanau and Karamu into Ren\'py\r\n
  • Work on the artwork for Hanasu\r\n
  • Work on the artwork for Project R\r\n
\r\n\r\nI\'d like to put out smaller releases a little more regularly in the latter half of the year! My current planned releases, in order of priority are:\r\n\r\n

  • The MindMindMind Android port (and possibly a Web build)\r\n

Dropping by to announce a new project that I'm working on, "My Husband is a Stranger"! It's a psychological/drama/romance visual novel (with elements of thriller, mystery, and horror) about a sweet marriage that slowly rots into a nightmare.

Your life should be perfect. The perfect career. The perfect family. The perfect husband. And bit by bit, that perfect life is cracking all around you.

As your life falls apart, you retreat to your family's estate on a remote island. But after a storm washes away your only means of escape, you find that you're trapped with your devoted, perfect husband... who might not be the man you married. Try to navigate a rocky relationship with your husband and unravel the mysteries surrounding him over the course of seven days.

The game will have a customizable protagonist, around 5-6 hours of content, 8 endings, and will be free to play (with a couple of endings/some optional content available as paid DLC).

Actala: The Hero's Shadow April 2023 Progress Report

Hello everyone, it's Chattercap! I'm the one-woman army creating "Actala: The Hero's Shadow." It's very nice to meet you!

First of all, thank you to everyone who checked out Act 1! Listening to everyone's comments never fails to put a smile on my face (the good and the bad)! If you're up for leaving more feedback, there's a Google Form linked on the starting page of Act 1. I'd really appreciate it! And double thank you to anyone who wishlisted.

So how's the progress on the game going?

  • I've updated some of the game's screenshots and promotional art! Expect to see additional updates over the next few months.
  • I've done the big revisions on Liam's route and passed it on to my editor! I am happy to announce that the total script is now over 240,000 words. (FYI - each route will be about 80,000-100,000 words long and will contain 100+ unique illustrations.)
  • I have been making major updates to the UI! The speech bubbles got a complete overhaul, and I also updated the "Fragments of the Past" screen. Furthermore, I added "light/dark" reading modes, so that you can swap between whatever you find most comfortable to read. Expect to see all this stuff implemented in a future build.
  • I programmed in a function to update your save files between different game versions. Hopefully this means that the update process will be pretty seamless!
  • I've been busy on the art for Liam's route. Currently at 60+ illustrations and counting!

Have you played Act 1?
By the way, if you wishlisted the game before Act 1 was available, and you haven't gotten around to trying it...please try it! It's over 60,000 words, around 4 hours of playtime, and about 140 unique, animated illustrations! It contains just a taste of the plot (with red herrings galore), but I hope it gives you enough of a taste to see what this project is all about!
