A small bug fix update: - Fixed a possible bug in controller focus in cut scenes. - Fixed a cache bug when restarting games.
Roller Drama has been nominated for 2023' A MAZE awards, for Berlin's arthouse game event. There is a host of very cool - ehm, a-mazing? - games selected, we can't wait to play them all!
Come visit us May 10-13 in Berlin!
For this update, we worked on optimizing readability and font quality rendering, which was sub-optimal for Chinese and Japanese fonts.
Now the latter don't rely on fallbacks for missing characters so the overall experience should be better.
Plus, Roller Drama got a "Steam Deck verified" check! Playing matches on a Steam Deck should be even better.
Also, a host of little fixes and improvements:
- Little fix when opening and closing meta panels.
- Clearer icons for selecting and deselecting special actions in matches.
- Fixed order of card selection in matches.
- Fixed a bug when opening the Mental State panel and then attempting to close it with "B" on the controller.

A small bug fix update: fixed a bug when opening the Mental State panel and then attempting to close it with "B" on the controller.
We published a video and a post with materials about A Feasible Approach To Team Sports Games Development. We present concepts and tips for sports games game development, inspired by Roller Drama, Football Drama and football games / simulators' development. Here is the video: [previewyoutube=gwQYugvgF7M;full][/previewyoutube] And here is the post with the supporting materials. Hope this is useful for some independent game developer!
This patch fixes the following: - Your team name was not saved - sorry for that!!! - Labels for controller bumpers/triggers in the blockers' controls when switching in real-time ("B" on the controller) were swapped. - If you quickly opened/closed the inventory you could break controller focus.
Your time to manage a Roller Derby team is NOW!

Roller Drama Runs fine on Steam Deck, Windows, Macs and Linux, and is localized in eighth languages English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Japanese and simplified Chinese.
Here is a thread about the inspiration and making of the game.
Roller Drama is a 100% independent production of a 4-people micro-company. We have been working on this game for more than two years, and we hope that there is something of value to you: thank you for playing!
So Roller Derby Player & Streamer Glitchkraft will be streaming Roller Drama on Twitch at launch, on January 26th, here https://www.twitch.tv/glitchkraft steamhappy
So it's official: Roller Drama will launch on Steam on January 26th, yes this month this year, 2023!!
The game runs on all operating systems, and it's great on the Steam Deck (@Valve's Steam Deck team, please give it a try!). And that is not all: we will also release a DLC soundtrack, composed, played and mixed by Francesco Arcuri, with 32 songs, here is a preview:
[previewyoutube=3PPVMk8_bq0;full][/previewyoutube]
When a game is localized... it is ready to ship! No longer lost in translation: Roller Drama now is ready in English French Italian German Spanish Portuguese Chinese and Japanese.
Making text fit and the fonts look good in the diverse scenes took quite a while and we are not completely done yet.
Only a few weeks left until release... wishlist it to get it ASAP

Love stories in Roller Drama intertwine with power struggles and personal issues - it's drama after all!
Our fantastic character designer "@Vic" created a new love scene that will be part of a Roller Drama's cut scene:
So many nice details:
And here more character and scenes from Roller Drama's stories:
So.. download! Try it! Add to wishlist! Give us feedback! THAAANKISSESSS!!!
P.S. Thank you to the 1000 players that already tried Roller Drama during this Steam Next Fest!
In this demo, you will watch the introduction, play the first (easy) quest, and the first match. You will have access to the exploration of the general team mind state, quest story, inventory, and championship standing. Of course, you will need a longer gameplay to experience their application.
We just want to point out a limit of the demo: in this kind of gameplay experience, familiarity with the characters and the progressive immersion in the story is a considerable part of the fun of it, and the limits of the demo will not get you fully into that.
A couple of more things:
- This demo also runs on the Steam Deck!
- The demo is English only (sorry), but we'll release Roller Drama in eight languages!
- Achievements and saves are disabled in the demo, but of course they will be there on release.
So we set up Roller Drama in order to make it available and running smoothly on the Steam Deck. We first needed to check system compatibility; given that we didn't get a development kit yet, we followed Steamworks documentation Developing for Steam Deck without a Dev-Kit.
For the input, Roller Drama works fine with a controller, so that was fine. For the display, we developed an adaptive system
so that in the case of a relatively small screen, the main contents are shown larger and with bigger fonts. What if you attach your Steam Deck to a big screen? Just go to settings and turn off the "small screen friendly" option \o/
For system support, Roller Drama is also released for SteamOS / Linux, so we make our builds run on Steam set on Manjaro as suggested by Valve:
For performance, again from Settings as shown above you can pick the level of graphical quality, though in our tests, even on High Roller Drama actually runs quite well (no pun!).
And so, here you can see Roller Drama running on the Steam Deck:
So we hope you are adding it now to your wishlist, Roller Drama will be released very early 2023!!!
On Friday October 7th at 5 pm (CEST, e.g. 11 am in New York), Verena Kyratzes (the game's writer) and Pietro Polsinelli (as game's narrative director) will live stream gameplay from Roller Drama's demo, commenting on its story and design. This will be our second live stream for Steam's Next Fest!
Roller Drama's dialogues and quest support direction notes in a variety of forms; we'll talk about how we integrated the backstory, the character's bios and the narrative's development flow.
See you there!
On Tuesday October 4th at 5pm (CEST, e.g. 11am in New York) we will live stream gameplay from Roller Drama's demo and even a bit beyond that.
See how you can lead the Roller Derby team of five Roller Derby athletes with challenging personalities as their coach and hopefully friend. Help them in their lives and guide the team during matches!
So happy to show you how the devs play their own game: we'll see the narrative/puzzles part and also the match's gameplay, with hints!
Roller Drama is close to completion: it will be out in early 2023.
We recently posted about how Roller Drama's narrative became richer "A Story With A Hundred Twists" . Now we have created a new trailer that presents some of the gameplay; we hope you'll like it!
Weve been super busy working on the narrative of Roller Drama! A lot of changes and testing have gone into creating a set of both evolving events and comic sitcom; youll now be able to make more than 100 meaningful narrative decisions during a playthrough of Roller Drama. We really want to give you a sense of importance and purpose for every action and decision you make. Youll decide how you roll steamhappy
Both mechanics and narrative are profoundly intertwined in Roller Drama; from chats, solving quests and playing matches, anything that happens will influence outcomes and relationships.
Youll now be able to check on your relationships with each member of the team, and follow their evolving self-esteem and personality.
Youll also be able to see the progression of your decisions (and your score!) by checking the in-game achievement list.
And, if youre like us and want to see every aspect of the story, dont worry! Youll be able to restart each of the ten chapters separately during play, so youll be able to change previous outcomes and explore alternate paths.
If you havent already, please wishlist our game when you get the chance! It really helps us out more than you know :)
Roller Drama development is in its final phase, and now we have a gameplay trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMFdQrT8Zbw
Since 2020 we have kept evolving the game in its narrative and sports mechanics, starting from very rough prototypes:
Roller Derby like matches went from strategy to real-time to how they are now, a mix of real-time actions and time paused strategy choices:
We had a chess-like management of mind states:
that has been turned into a full immersion in your team's lives and situations that you have to deal with interactively.
The adventure part mixes comedic and messy life situations that you have to solve with point-and-click puzzles and interactive fiction with dialogues and interactions filled with choices.
The narrative design too has been evolving, moving from a visual novel style to a more characteristic one.
What is crucial is the interaction between evolving plot and match management; the integration has been thickening in time by creating bridge elements such as "special cards" that can be used in matches and in having a "pep talk" puzzle between "jams" (a three minute period of continuous match play).
About one thing we are quite sure: this is still a unique game! steammocking

A SITCOM?!?
In Roller Drama, you (Joan) live with & coach five kickass athletes: Anne, Portia, Lily, Cordelia, and Juliet. Together they form a top Roller Derby team, a full contact sport on quad skates!
Your job is to act as a keeper of the team, managing both their personal and professional lives. Try to balance everyone’s emotions as they navigate rivalries, friendships, and love.
REAL-TIME FULL-CONTACT SPORT!
While personal dramas rage on, you’ll also need to manage Roller Derby matches in real time! Plan strategies, give orders, and manage the match using arcade-inspired controls.
SURVEILLANCE
