The project was restarted in spring and has been in quiet development since then, and the body possession (reworked into shapeshifting) mechanic is back and better than before, along with new features you'll uncover while playing the game. Ringlorn Saga Gaiden is Back!

Hi everyone, The project underwent a complete restart in late 2023. After going through an internal review, it became clear that the project suffered from fundamental issues and needed a fresh start. For example: [olist]

  • The new mechanical additions, such as half-steps, initially allowed for more complex maps and battles but also made the game less snappy and satisfying.
  • Body possession felt like a nice gimmick for a bonus game mode, but it wouldnt be able to carry the entire campaign in its current form, and after several iterations, it became clear that it would require more resources and time than we had to realize its full potential.
  • Making sure that each body is fun to play proved to be an additional scope creep, as the number of enemy types is higher than in the original game. [/olist] In the end, the vertical slice wasnt compelling and didnt feel like a step forward, and the amount of work required to realize its full potential went way over the budget and the time we could allocate for this project. Because of that, it was decided to roll back to the original game and iterate while not fixing what wasnt broken in the first place. The body possession mechanic was scrapped, and while the story remained mostly the same, the concept changed to an adventure set in what can be described as an RPG fail state.
    Ringlorn Saga Gaiden solidified earlier this year, with the game being about 40% complete, and were aiming to launch the game sometime this spring. We hope that despite these major changes youll enjoy a dark, yet cozy RPG. The Steam page will be updated soon with new screenshots and details, and the devlogs will continue until morale improves.     We're excited to announce Demon Lord Reincarnation Gaiden, our new game. Originally, this scenario was planned for a sequel, but it took off in its own direction and became an Ultima-style game with a new story. However, the initial draft was too good to abandon, so we turned it into a standalone expansion, similar to how Wizardry II was to the original Wizardry.

    DevLog #0: Introducing Ringlorn Saga Gaiden

    Hi everyone! In this DevLog, we'd like to talk about Ringlorn Saga Gaiden, its design, and the advancements from the previous game. Please note that the game is still in development, so the screenshots may not reflect the final version.

    What is Ringlorn Saga Gaiden?


    Ringlorn Saga Gaiden is a top-down Adventure RPG with an open world and bump combat system. You play as a spirit of a warrior who died in a battle against the Dark Lord, and you need to possess his minions and free the trapped Five Magic Spirits to exact your revenge. The scenario allows you to reach your goals in any order, and each monster type offers its own set of abilities and nuances that will affect the way you play the game. In fact, if you decide to skip objectives and face the Dark Lord early, even if you end up dying by his hand in a single hit, the game wont stop you. Ringlorn Saga Gaiden is inspired by the Temple of Rebirth dungeon from the original Ringlorn Saga. In this bonus mode, you get to play as monsters and seek to reclaim your body from the top floor of the dungeon. It was added at the last moment for fun and was met with positive reception, and weve decided to make a standalone game out of it, with its own story and revised game design.

    Does it play the same as the bonus mode?


    No. The original systems were fine for a bonus dungeon that takes about 20-30 minutes to beat, but they wouldnt work in a standalone campaign that lasts several hours. The game design was revised to focus on player agency for example, youll no longer be forced to swap bodies whenever you kill an enemy. Instead, unless you play as a ghost, body-swapping is handled by manually interacting with a corpse of an enemy. After all, if you defeated a boss and took over his body, it wouldnt be fair if you werent allowed to kick some serious ass and look down on monsters that gave you trouble a few hours ago. The rest of the game will feel familiar enough to those who played the original, but with quite a few changes, such as the switch to half-step movement, which offers more tactical options, such as attacking two enemies at the same time, and allows us to create more nuanced maps. On the technical side, the game is running on a new codebase that offers more flexibility, and Ringlorn Saga: Book Two will run on this codebase as well.

    How far along is it? When is it coming out?


    The main scenario planning is complete. The gameplay, level design, and scenario implementation are underway and were enjoying rapid progress. Ringlorn Saga Gaiden will come out in 2023, but theres no concrete date yet, as were not rushing the game to the finish line.
