The "Triple-One" Update is here and brings a new feature, some new content, and a bunch of bug fixes!

Flares



Flares are a brand new mode of in-game communication. Select a flare from the UI crosshair button next to the 'Fire' button. Choose 'Team' or 'All', and then select a placement on the map. Circle- Specify crates, tanks, or anything on the map. Arrow- Signal your movement or request an ally to move. Crosshair- Direct your attacks towards a specific enemy. X- Specify a bumper hit point, or just about anything you want to.

We added a heap of new possible Dogtags to keep things fresh.

Bug Fixes & Tweaks


  • Fixed negative countdown error when starting matches
  • Wanderer now works correctly in Rebound and Vortex matches
  • Fixed the unusual 'Portal Gun' and bumper interaction
  • Fixed Sonar projectile size discrepancy
  • Fixed bug where 'Static' weapons hit self in FFA matches

v1.1.1 & Roadmap

v1.1.1


v1.1.1 is already under development and slotted for late this month! This update will bring a couple notable new features (like flares for better team communication) and a handful of new content. Keep an eye out for it!

Console Updates


Once v1.1.1 has dropped on Steam, we're going to switch our focus to bringing the latest version of the game to both Xbox and PlayStation versions. These versions are currently still on v1.0. There are a few hoops to jump through to release an update on console platforms, so this step might take some time.

Nintendo Switch


We've been exploring the possibility of bringing the game to Nintendo Switch and think it would be a great fit for the platform.

Announcing ShellShot Arena

We're excited to announce a brand new game in the ShellShock universe.

ShellShot Arena



ShellShot Arena is a fast-paced, top-down, cross-platform online multiplayer game. Master a massive arsenal of upgradable weapons to be the last tank standing in Team, Free-For-All, and Battle Royale matches. Earn XP to level up your tank, weapons, items, and gear.

This game has been a side project for a couple years now and I've finally reached a point to share a teaser with the community. It's brought some unique challenges and required a lot of learning but development is going smoothly and I'm very happy with how it's shaping up. A couple unique aspects to ShellShot Arena:

Realtime Multiplayer


ShellShock Live is and has always been turn-based. This style of game is much more straightforward to create because network latency isn't a problem. Game clients simulate the turn on their own time and then sync up with the server once completed. Realtime multiplayer brings new challenges because we need to keep all players synced up in real-time. Done well, this should lead to fast paced gameplay with a more exciting feel.

Cross-Platform


We're building from the ground up for cross-platform play. PC players will be able to play with console players and mobile players. You should be able to have one common account over all your devices. We're planning to release an early beta to Steam Early Access Q3 2023 (Subject to change). New Game Mechanic: Healing



Several of the following new weapons have new healing abilities, adding an unexplored layer of strategy to the game. Opting for a clutch ally heal may be more effective than doling out damage, depending on the current landscape.

24 New Weapons


New Weapon Set: Health Aura



Health Aura is the most standard of healing weapons. Upon use, it generates a healing aura around your tank, regenerating health for you and any tanks inside the aura. The healing aura is extra effective on allies, healing them for greater HP amounts. Be careful- enemies inside the aura heal too! Upgrade the weapon for a larger radius and more powerful effects.

New Weapon Set: Confuser



Confuser plays tricks on enemy tanks causing them to shoot themselves. Protect your electronics- you don't want to be on the receiving end of this one.

These Health Potions are specially formulated to maintain their efficacy even at the high pressures of a tank barrel. They're effective at delivering HP over long distances in projectile fashion.

Dogtags



Dogtags are collectible visual banners unlocked in a variety of ways. Each displays a unique design and can be equipped behind your name badge to be shown in all areas of the game. This update contains 101 Unique Dogtags- rep your favorite! Rarity ranges from Common to Legendary and is depicted by the Rarity Symbol on the dogtag.

Cosmetic Points



Cosmetic Points are a new in-game currency earned by completing Daily Challenges or purchased in the shop. They are used to unlock cosmetic items only- never anything that can give players an advantage or affect gameplay. ShellShock Live will never be 'Pay-2-Win', and we worked hard to make sure any optional purchases of cosmetic items can only benefit the community.

Daily Challenges



Each day, you're given 3 bonus challenges to complete. Challenges range from dealing damage and getting kills to landing specific skillshots and earning XP. Complete these challenges to earn Cosmetic Points, which are used to unlock various cosmetic items from the shop.

Daily Dogtag



Complete all 3 daily challenges to uncover your Daily Dogtag. From here, you have a choice of two options: [olist]
  • Unlock It- Like what you see? Unlock it from the shop using your previously banked Cosmetic Points.
  • Bank It- Skip the dogtag and bank a 5 Cosmetic Point reward. Save up for a tag that really catches your eye. [/olist]

    MiniGames



    Sick of dying early and waiting for the round to finish? Spin up a minigame on a translucent popup to kill time while spectating. Who knows- maybe you'll even get an achievement out of the deal.

    PongShock



    ShellShock Live fans from the Flash days will remember this classic. What it may lack in originality, it makes up for with such a cool name. Use the Up/Down arrow keys to move your paddle. Play to 7 against the computer. Beat Easy to advance to Medium, etc.

    Tank Headlights and Taillights



    We've added two full new sets of tank parts. Light up the terrain before you with one of several styles.

    Game News Popup



    The News Popup on the main menu lets us communicate in-game to all players between updates. This is part of an effort to be more active in the community with better communication about the game and the roadmap looking forward.

    Looking to level-up a specific weapon or need one to complete a challenge? Crank up the starting weapon count for better selection. Want to limit weapons in the match for a unique twist? Go right ahead! Increasing Starting Weapon count slightly reduces XP multiplier for obvious reasons.

    New Game Mod: Cage Match



    Cage Match raises the side bumpers by 300%, leading to some truly chaotic gameplay.

    Progress Screen Upgrade



    The Hub Progress Screen has been updated to include all unlockables in the game. Progress bar categories now include:

    Wind in the Firing Range

    Numbered Portals



    Multiple sets of portals on the screen? They're now numbered to help distinguish pairs.

    Resolution Settings



    Resolution and Fullscreen Options are now found in the in-game settings instead of in a pre-game launcher. This is cleaner, and it helps us achieve full controller support and possible future Steam Deck support.

    Sprite Quality



    We've sharpened textures and sprites used throughout the game for better visual quality. You'll notice this most on small sprites like Weapon or Item Icons.

    Two New Audio Tracks


    The ShellShock Live soundtrack gets two epic new songs.

    Performance Improvements


    Updated the Unity Engine a couple generations for better performance, efficiency, and stability. ShellShock Live now runs as a 64-bit executable for further performance and memory improvements.

    We can't fit everything we added to v1.1 in this post, but here are a few more notes:
    • New Ranked Game Option that can now be disabled to stop matches from affecting your Elo Skill Rating
    • Skill Ratings no longer reset after reaching too high of a level
    • Fortify no longer stalls your turn in all-shot mode
    • Fortify & Overcharge are no longer found in crates
    • Main Menu Chat in the Settings disables the global chat on the main menu
    • The Unlock Screen is now displayed whenever you unlock a weapon- including from the shop
    • Gamepads no longer rumble when the 'Gamepad' setting is turned off in Settings
    • Fixed issue where players couldn't join games with negative gears
    *EDIT* The CropDuster and PyroSlam weapons were originally intended to be bonuses for owners of the respective games on Steam, this didn't fit in line with keeping all weapons earnable in-game.   • v1.1 Sneak Peek and Release Date

    Back again with another sneak peek of v1.1, this time with a new feature: Tank Headlights and Taillights. Customize your tank with different colors and combinations.
    This feature and many more will be in the v1.1 Update which drops...: Friday, March 31, 2023. That's in 3 days!! Are you ready? -- --I have received reports recently about members of the community claiming to have a development position or inside knowledge of SSL development. I want to make it clear that this is still a one-man operation and community members who claim to have inside knowledge aren't being truthful. I am not currently active on Discord and any official news will be posted here on Steam! I also want to clarify that using any software to aim-assist or xp-farm is against the SSL Terms of Service and can result in an account ban. We're going to be more strict about this moving forward. With that said... I'm just tying up some loose ends and doing some last minute testing on the update. There also miiiiiight be a return of a certain minigame beloved by the SSL2 Flash community... but that's just a rumor. See you Friday!

    Mobile Release & v1.1

    Mobile Release!


    ShellShock Live has officially been released for Android and iOS! Search 'ShellShock Live' on the your respective app store to find it. It's $4.99, and you will not need to re-purchase it if you purchased the beta. Crossplay is supported between iOS and Android, but not between mobile and other platforms as they are different games on different development tracks.

    v1.1 Dev Update


    Now that the mobile game has launched, we'll need to make sure it's running smoothly before moving on to v1.1 development. We also need to add v1.0 features to the mobile version (we split off development from the Steam version before Steam v1.0 was created, so we have some work to add those features to the mobile game).     ShellShock Live Mobile Beta & v1.1 Dev Update

    We are aiming for a mobile release in late May, but we're opening up the ShellShock Live Mobile Beta today and need your help! The beta will run for around a week but could end at any time. Keep in mind, any progress made in the beta may be reset before the full release next month. Instructions below on how to sign up if you're interested:

  • Become a Tester by clicking this link and pressing the big blue button. Make sure you're logged in to the same Google account you'll be using on the Google Play Store on your phone.
  • Purchase the game by searching for "ShellShock Live" on the Google Play Store (you will have to scroll down a lot to find it, but it's there!). You'll need to purchase the game in order to beta test on Android (this is a Google requirement.) We've had some issues with the Play Store showing a "Pre-register" button instead of a "Buy" button, but the "Buy" button should show up after some time. After you purchase, you should be able to download the app and start playing! [/olist]

  • Pre-Order the app by searching for "ShellShock Live" on the App Store (you will have to scroll down a lot to find it, but it's there!). This is not required to be download the beta, but you may encounter issues with our game servers if your account doesn't own the game.   • Join the Beta through TestFlight here. This will require you download the "TestFlight" app from the App Store and should be able to launch the beta from there.     Thanks for your suggestions in the last post! Most of our effort is going towards getting the mobile app running smoothly, but once that's done all our dev firepower will be pointed towards v1.1. Here's a sneak peek at what we have in the works right now:

  • Dev Update | Mobile Version | v1.1

    It's been a while since I last posted so I wanted to bring you up to speed on the current development roadmap for ShellShock Live. We've got some big things in the works.

    Mobile Version


    It's official- we're coming to iOS and Android! I can't count how many requests I've gotten to bring SSL to mobile platforms, so we've been hard at work for the past several months to make it happen. There are a few simplifications and UI changes, but for the most part mobile players will be getting the full game experience! Crossplay will be supported between iOS and Android, but not between mobile and PC based on some backend limitations. We're probably looking at a price of $4.99, but this could all change as we get closer to release. We'll likely be running a beta prior to release, so if you'd like to be a part of that, sign up via the Google Form here: Beta Sign-Up

    v1.1


    Once the mobile version is released, we'll be turning our attention towards v1.1. We have a few ideas, but now is your chance to submit yours! What feature requests (or big fixes) would you like to see in the new version?

    v1.0 Released!

    After several years and 164 Updates (yes, we counted) we've officially reached Version 1.0. Keep reading for the update notes... it's a big one!

    Attack Drones



    Attack drones will occasionally scatter throughout the sky, prepared for battle. Hit one with a shot and it'll join forces with your team and attack your enemies! Drones last one turn and fly away when they've completed their assault.

    Firing Range Scenario Editor



    A fully featured Scenario Editor has been added to the Firing Range. Modify the map, add obstacles and enemies, and then test your creation! Useful for practicing unique setups, testing the limits of weapons, or just messing around! Enter the Scenario Editor by pressing the "Edit" button in the top left corner of the Firing Range.

    Ally Aim Visibility



    Teammate aim details are now fully visible, unlocking an entirely new level of strategy! Plan out your shots based on your environment and teammate's decisions. Pair it with teammate weapon visibility for the ultimate tactical advantage. Teammate aim details are even visible after your tank has been destroyed.

    X3 Damage Buff



    Supercharge your projectile with this rare multiplier causing 3 times the damage. Make sure to grab it before your opponents do- the extra damage is valuable! X3 buffs are considerably smaller and more difficult to hit than X2s.

    Mission Thumbnails



    The mission set list got a visual overhaul and now displays a previews of the mission. Tank positions, bumpers, buffs, and portals included.

    Vortex Mode



    In Vortex Mode, all shots must first pass through a portal before dealing damage to an enemy. It's similar to rebound, but with an inter-dimensional twist. Portals are continually rotating out, so you'll have to discover and remember which portals match up!

    Star Badges



    When 100 levels just isn't enough, dedicated players can now unlock star badges at various XP points. Some badges are accompanied by in-game rewards.     Bonus Campaign Mission Set



    We've added a new campaign bonus set with 10 tough new missions leveraging updated game mechanics. New missions range from flushing out protected enemies with 22 attack drones to hunting down foes with nothing but a dagger. Complete the entire set for a reward. Good luck!

    New Items: Overcharge & Fortify



    Two new items, Overcharge, and Fortify, open up unexplored tactical avenues. Unlimited uses add an element risk and reward.

    Overcharge



    Instead of firing your weapon, use Overcharge to boost the damage of your next shot. Overcharge can be used an unlimited number of times, but the effects will not be stacked. Overcharge is useful if you don't currently have a great shot, or want to make that Sniper in your arsenal really count next turn. Overcharge Damage Boost: 25%

    Fortify



    Use Fortify to hunker down and take less damage next turn. Similar to Overcharge, it takes the place of firing your weapon. Fortify can also be used an unlimited number of times, but the effects will not be stacked. Balance the utility of increased defense with Fortify, or increased damage with Overcharge to decide which to use. Fortify Damage Reduction: 25%

    Items in the Gear Shop



    We've received many requests to allow the purchase of items with gears in the Gear Shop, and it's finally a possibility! Stock up on supplies with your spare gears. Keep in mind, shield effects have changed (more details later in the post.)

    Challenge: Autonomous Combat



    Destroy 5 tanks with an attack drone. Reward: Drone Weapon + 500xp

    Weapon: Drone



    Fire an autonomous attack drone into the play arena. The drone will lock on to an enemy and fire at the target. Weapon Level 1: Drone Weapon Level 2: Heavy Drone Unlock Criteria: Complete "Autonomous Combat" Challenge

    Weapon: Permaroller



    Similar to a standard Roller, but with a significant difference: The Permaroller won't automatically explode on enemy contact. This means you'll have to land the projectile a good distance in front of your target for a perfectly timed explosion. With the added difficulty comes increased damage- Permaroller packs a punch. Tier 1: Permaroller Tier 2: Heavy Permaroller Unlock Criteria: Purchase Permaroller in the Gear Shop

    Weapon Tiers: Paprika and Cayenne



    The [not so] beloved Salt and Pepper weapon gets a couple spicy new additions. Tier 1: Pepper Tier 2: Salt and Pepper Tier 3: Paprika Tier 4: Cayenne

    Weapon Tier: Construction



    By popular demand, Builder now joins it's big brother, Digger, with a third tier. Similar to Excavation, Construction fires plenty of projectiles working together to construct a mountain of terrain. Tier 1: Builder Tier 2: MegaBuilder Tier 3: Construction

    Player Tag Visual Upgrade



    Player names have received a subtle visual upgrade. The color gradient indicates whether the player is an ally or enemy.

    Item Tooltip



    Hovering over an item with your mouse now displays a concise item tooltip describing the item's effects. Mostly helpful for beginning players learning the game, but also useful to remind players the effects of the two new items, Overcharge and Fortify.

    Obstacles Game Option



    The frequency of obstacles (Bumpers, Portals, Black Holes, etc.) is now controlled by a pre-game option.     Visual and Audio Upgrade for Crits



    Critical Hits look much more pleasing now, and are marked by a distinct new sound effect. Doing major damage has never felt sweeter.

    Obstacle Adjustments



    Obstacles like Bumpers, Portals, Black Holes, and Attack Drones now have a chance to span multiple turns. This means if you don't grab that "x2" buff, your opponent just might!

    Laser Sight Gun



    Trick out and soup up your gun with a stylish Laser Sight upgrade. Unlock Criteria: Three Star Badge ()

    Shielded Track



    Always protect your tank's valuable treads and inner workings. It's easy with the Shielded Track. Unlock Criteria: Purchase Shielded Track in the Gear Shop

    Pidgeonholes Map



    Each tank get's it's own protected bunker. Watch out for grenades! Unlock Criteria: Complete the Bonus Missions

    Mission Item Indicator

    Select weapons can now effectively penetrate shields. Some of these include:

    Two brand new tracks have been added to the score, bringing the game to 10 unique pieces. Explosion sounds have been revamped with more variety and more powerful sounding blasts. There's a new confirmation sound when you lock in your shot. Several other small additions.

    Many More Improvements


    The list goes on and on, but here are some notable ones:
    • No more Attractoids in Rebound Mode :)
    • The scroll wheel now works in the server list, the campaign mission list as well as a few hub screens that didn't work before
    • Movement is now preemptively streamed, causing much less latency. No more watching enemies move at the last second past the move timer.
    • The Level Field Mod now has an XP multiplier of 0.9x (previously 0.5x)
    • Fixed a bug where buffs in missions would be of a random size
    • Adjusted Weapon XP required to upgrade the 'Counter' weapon family
    • Fixed visual glitch when the XP Indicator spawns
    • Player Levels are now visible in Tournaments
    • Fixed bug where the Tank upgrade bar would go past the edge on the Tank Upgrade screen
    • Fixed Shoccer glitch, where some weapons would affect the score improperly
    • Item buttons now grey-out when you have 0
    • Mac OSX Catalina users will no longer receive a warning regarding 64-bit support
    • Optimized textures for better performance and fidelity
    • Upgraded Unity engine to latest stable version for stability and performance improvements
    • Fixed bug where crates would contain points in modes that didn't support points
    • Fixed bug where the gamepad D-Pad would affect your aim while choosing a weapon
    • Fixed bug where a player could use an item without any effect when in 'Shoot-Only' mode
    • The Shadow weapon is now correctly invisible (except for the shadow)
    • Several missions have been balanced (Looking at you, Fiesta Forever)
    • Several weapons have been adjusted (including Botherer, Breaker Mania, and Acid Rain)
    • Fixed bug where Solar Flare could bounce endlessly between side-bumpers
    • Some explosions and effects received a visual upgrade/tuning

    v0.9.8.10 Mini-Update Released!

    Some players have been complaining of connection issues with ShellShock Live for a long time. Today's mini-update adds a new system that intelligently tries to reconnect users disconnected by an 'EndRead' or 'ReceivedBytes == 0' error. If reconnected successfully, you should never notice you were disconnected in the first place. Previously, you would have been kicked out of the game (and match) and forced to reconnect from scratch. This feature is early in development, so it might not always work, but it's a start. For those of you affected by connection issues, please let me know if this update helps improve the situation.
