HIRAETH is an immersive single-player survival experience that challenges players to survive and explore the desolate remains of a forgotten planet. Only the strong can survive merciless AHRA PRIME.

You find yourself alone and out of resources on an forgotten planet that seems to be trying very hard to kill you. Scavenge for food and supplies as you try to piece together the mysteries of AHRA PRIME. The voice of the enigmatic Charon is your only guiding light through the seemingly endless abyss. Where will that light guide you? And what awaits you at the end of the journey?
HIRAETH features two distinct gamemode experiences that share survival mechanics.
- HIRAETH – ETERNAL offers a non-narrative, endless survival sandbox.
- HIRAETH – REVELATIONS is our story mode, with each chapter unveiling a greater mystery. Both will test your survival skills, however, REVELATIONS also features moral decisions with outcomes that significantly affect the world.

EXPLORATION

AHRA PRIME features a diverse landscape, including mountains, coastlines, and canyons. In order to survive, you must traverse the hellish landscape, collecting resources and scavenging for supplies. Deserted Outposts and dilapidated bases act as markers, helping you navigate the seamless open world. As you complete survival challenges, you can earn perks that will assist in future runs.

PERMADEATH

When you die in HIRAETH – ETERNAL, survival free mode, your save and progress is reset. The wrong choice might cost you everything. The mode will also feature difficulty settings, so that each player can tailor the challenges to their liking.
SURVIVAL

HIRAETH features custom, in-depth survival systems. As you explore and fight, you must manage your oxygen levels, thirst, hunger, and negative ailments. Without vital supplies, nourishment, and rest, you will not survive the planet’s harsh conditions.
RICH STORY

Play through a rich storyline as you explore the world while trying to learn the fate of those who came before you. The full story will be released in chapters with the first chapter available upon release.
LIMINAL SPACES

You must traverse the world of AHRA PRIME for life-saving food and gear items, while avoiding the dangerous predators and environmental hazards. Outposts can act like temporary shelters, but when your supplies are exhausted, you must travel onward. Cowards will starve and the brave will become prey. Which are you?
CRAFTING

HIRAETH features a deep, robust crafting system that must be mastered in order to survive. As you find schematics and recipes scattered across the world, you’ll be able to craft items, food, supplies, and weapons.
Tools, workshops, and recycling stations will assist you, as will portable tool sets. Some tasks can be performed by hand, while more complex recipes require specialized machinery, such as a 3D printer.
FULL BODY AWARENESS

For better immersion, we have introduced a full body awareness system. When looking in first person, you will see your character's movements, clothing, equipment, and held items. This will also allow you to determine an item's condition, for items and weapons deteriorate with use.
EVA SUITS

The EVA suit is your lifeline and only means of surviving the deadly environment of AHRA PRIME. As you explore you will come across different suit types such as pilot suits designed for faster traversal or heavy suits built for greater protection. You can also customize your chosen suit with upgrade modules that add additional functionality and further enhance the suit’s unique characteristics.
UPGRADING

Upgrading your tools and equipment will allow you to survive longer and explore further. Shelters can also be repaired and upgraded. Doing so can increase the efficiency of its workstations or unlock entirely new systems.
PROGRESSIVE SKILLS
HIRAETH is not a typical RPG, but everyone learns something all the time. As you gain experience, you acquire different skills. Some will help you survive, others will speed up your work, and others will enable you to perform more complex activities.After achieving some of them, you will receive them permanently, which will make it easier for you to try again - because you definitely won't end up with just one!
UNLOCKABLES
In each playthrough, after achieving certain goals, you can earn permanent Perks that will make tasks easier in the next playthrough. From the acquired ones, you will be able to choose which ones you want to use and later increase the number you can bring with you.The simplest example would be to increase your stamina after walking a certain distance



FREE UPDATES
HIRAETH will receive free updates over time, including additional story chapters, an expanded world for the survival sandbox mode, and numerous improvements. These updates are free and accessible with the base game purchase.We will not introduce:
- paid add-ons (apart from the already available soundtrack)
- paid content, items, world expansions, storyline - we want to deliver a complete product.
- However, we do not rule out adding paid cosmetic items. These items will not affect gameplay and are pending community outreach.

Double FPS at No Extra Charge
The latest HIRAETH update delivers a massive performance leap across all systems with no visual compromises. Players on midrange hardware are now reporting up to 2 higher FPS, and even older GPUs are running smoother than ever.\n\nAs you can see, the oncemythical stable 60 FPS is now achievable even on an RTX 2060 with DLSS set to EPIC or the AMD equivalent.

Why not on my top rig on Windows 11?
Many Windows 11 users may be surprised to see much lower performance on their systems. I explain the issue along with the full solution in the next section, and the good news is that everything can be fixed. The problem is not related to HIRAETH or Unreal Engine, and as youll see, it affects many other games as well, from small indie titles to major AAA releases.
I encourage you to take a look. Windows 10 players can safely skip this part, but for Windows 11 users its essential and it will also help improve performance in other games you play.
Road to Double fps for free

Along the way, I performed detailed bottleneck testing across every major system in HIRAETH. Heres what I found:
My Game Code All Green
No bottlenecks here. Everything runs smoothly, even with a large number of systems constantly monitoring player state, items, world time, and environmental conditions.
Character Animation Heavier Than the Entire Game Code
Character animation costs more than all gameplay logic combined but thats completely normal. Its well within expected limits and does not cause any performance issues.
Rendering Excellent, With Plenty of Headroom
Rendering performance is fantastic. Even on my vintage RTX 2060, HIGH and EPIC settings run smoothly, and stronger GPUs have a lot of room for future visual upgrades. Ahra Prime will continue to grow more beautiful.
World Loading (World Partition) Fully Stable
HIRAETH uses Unreal Engines World Partition system something many developers fear. Here, it works exactly as planned: stable, predictable, and efficient.
AI & Actor Ticks No Issues
General AI logic and actor ticks are clean and lightweight. No unexpected spikes or hidden CPU drains.
Navigation Still a Known Unreal Engine Challenge
Navigation remains the one problematic area. Even after many fixes introduced in Unreal Engine 5.6.1 for openworld projects, several issues remain unresolved on the engine side.

For now, Ive temporarily disabled AI navigation while I work on a custom workaround. [u]AI will return in the coming days without the performance penalties.[/u]
Physics Engine Bugs, Now Under Control
Physics bugs in the engine were causing unnecessary CPU load. I identified and removed several problematic objects and edge cases, and since the last update everything has been stable.
Other News from Ahra Prime
Toward the end of the year or the very beginning of 2026 I planned a major update for Nesoi Island. And while not everything made it in, a good part of it did!
I feel especially committed to this project. I know HIRAETH isnt a game for everyone but those who connect with it, really connect. One recent player already passed over 40 hours of playtime just a few days after purchasing the game. That kind of dedication means the world to me.
And I wont rest until Ahra Prime offers enough depth, mystery, and discovery to keep explorers engaged for hundreds of hours. This world deserves it and so do the players who believe in it.
A brandnew location has arrived: Athens, currently in WIP form but already shaping up to be one of the most atmospheric areas on Ahra Prime. Melee combat with the Crowbar is now fully functional, and the UI received a wave of improvements, refinements, and qualityoflife upgrades.
Some of the planned features had to be postponed due to the deep performance investigation and the Windows 11 research described earlier. These issues are critically important not only for HIRAETH, but for many other games as well and solving them now ensures a stable foundation for everything that comes next.
The good news: more quests, more crafting, and more gameplay systems are already on the way. Ahra Prime is growing, and the next updates will bring even more life to the world.

Some players even confirmed the exact same Windows 11 performance behavior in other titles across different engines including survival games such as Occupy Mars: The Game (Unity), Astrometica (Unreal Engine 5.3), and The Planet Crafter (Unity). This further proves that the issue originates from Windows 11 itself, not from any specific game or engine.

I have no control over Windows 11s performance behavior that part is entirely on Microsofts side. However, I will be updating HIRAETHs own scaling and input handling soon. Ive doubled the FPS (or even more!) why not!
Recently Unreal Engine started acting up in some really strange ways, so instead of waiting around, I dove straight into the problem. I tweaked a bunch of settings, worked around several engine quirks, removed a few actors theoretically they shouldnt have affected performance, but as always, UE had its own opinion about that
The result? On Nesoi Island, on my aging RTX 2060, Im now getting around 60 FPS on the shown settings. Before on a good day it was barely 30 FPS, and the last builds well, lets not talk about those
I also added a few small code optimizations I had planned for later, and they helped a bit too. But the real issue wasnt the code it was engine physics and navigation mesh generation. Not even the AI itself. For now, AI is disabled in this version while I rethink how to approach navmesh. I dont have full control over it, but Im confident I can sort it out in a few days.
Whats temporarily missing?
Creatures: spiders, Raptus, Slug you can survive without them for a few days

More good news
I usually rely on experience and intuition when it comes to textures, object density, rocks, foliage, and world composition. But today I ran a full rendering analysis, and everything is in the green on my RTX 2060!
This means I can safely add more rocks, objects, and foliage on Nesoi (and future locations) without hurting FPS. Rendering is not the bottleneck the engines physics and navmesh generation were. And those are now mostly under control.
A note about DLSS
DLSS can be a bit unpredictable. A wrong setting may lower FPS its worth experimenting, waiting a moment after launching the game, and sometimes restarting.
Why? My DLSS setup isnt perfect, and in AAA studios entire teams work on this. Plus, the Nvidia plugin isnt fully stable. But overall it works well and many of you told me it helps a lot
Other changes
Not many I focused almost entirely on performance and system checks. And it worked all in a single day! Additionally:
Athens improved surroundings and landing zone. The WIP drone is temporarily removed due to construction issues (and because UE physics can murder FPS).
[/*]Comm Center works better now, no duplicated objects like a few days ago. The antenna will return after fixes.
[/*]Water Station removed for now; it wasnt showing up anyway. It will return in a better, polished form.

Quick Fix Patch - bad start removed steamfacepalm
A small hotfix is going live to address an issue causing players to randomly start the game at Athens without a helmet or other essential items. While working on Athens yesterday, I accidentally added an extra player start there. When multiple starts exist, the engine picks one at random. The unnecessary Athens start has now been removed, and the game once again begins as intended, inside the cargo hold of the penitentiary ship on The Last Drop.

I also noticed that the Comm Center has been accidentally duplicated in the engine. Im in the middle of working on that area and normally wouldnt ship a version in this state, but fixing the critical wrong-start-location bug had higher priority. Sorry in advance for the inconvenience.
Performance
Ive noticed a performance drop in this version. Ill describe the issue in more detail in the next Ahra Prime Times. Even though the build compiles correctly and there were no changes to the rendering code, performance still fluctuates. If youre experiencing problems, I recommend temporarily downgrading to an earlier version; I cant resolve this immediately. And as you can imagine, contacting the engine creator or Nvidia about it is purely theoretical.\n\nI cant correct the duplication and performance immediately, so another update will follow later this week.

Restored several airlocks that were invisible in version 0.9.8.42.

Minor fix for yesterday\'s release Hiraeth update 0.9.8.41, no version change
After fixing the chargers, I noticed that the water filler isn\'t working properly now - fixed.
The charger first disinfects if the canteen already contains water and then fills it completely with fresh water - just like before.
I also changed the short info about if there\'s an item already connected to the charger; previously, regardless of the type, it indicated an already connected air bottle.
Performance update for the new Nvidia driver version!
I received a report that FPS performance is significantly worse after a game update. I checked - it\'s not the case for me, but I had previous Nvidia drivers and my settings had a known FPS. After updating to the latest ones, I also noticed a drop in FPS - it\'s not the game\'s fault; I didn\'t change anything that could affect rendering. If you\'re experiencing a significant performance drop, consider rolling back to the previous driver version.

Fixes to the save/load system after the recent switch to the engine version that changed several core rules:
Save / Load
\nChangers / Hangers: Air Tanks, Medkits
For some time, after loading a save, the position of hanging Air Tanks or Medkits could be incorrect, or they could appear in an inaccessible or invisible spot fixed.
Chargers: Air Tanks, Batteries, and the Canteen Refiller
A similar issue occurred here: after loading a save, items would appear to disappear fixed.
POIs such as item pallets, containers, rover
After the general changes to item saving, these should now behave correctly, though they still require more extensive testing.
Cookers: Hotplates and the Burning Barrel
Items didnt disappear here, but the device state (on/off) wasnt saved fixed. The burning barrel will still receive improvements regarding flame behavior after loading. Overall, cookers will need further upgrades after the introduction of new cookable items (mushrooms) and their cooking positions on cookers.
Game save confirmation refinement
The system now checks whether a complete save has been completed and only then displays the \"GAME SAVED\" message with the slot title. This is a safety feature in case you exit the game too quickly from the menu or via the Windows shortcut.
To fully see the changes, it\'s a good idea to restart the game (New Game). Some changes will automatically apply after a new save. Generally, however, the above changes, while important, are not essential for gameplay, so a new game is not required.
Airlock collision fix
A single report on the Steam forum mentioned a teleportation issue from the Airlock to the changing room (Forwarding Base). I tested it thoroughly but couldnt reproduce the bug. Just in case, I adjusted collision channels for walls and objects inside Airlocks a theoretical safety measure.
Gameplay change access to the Forwarding Base and Comm Center!
After a long series of system fixes and new features (like melee with the crowbar), its time for gameplay changes!
For a while now, players havent really complained about having too much food. Soon, many new challenges will arrive to transform this early access sandbox into a true survival experience more searching, crafting, and resource management, but also more satisfaction for real survival fans.
To start with, the requirement to gather enough Obedient points to access the Forwarding Base has returned and now it also applies to the Comm Center.

Youll need to obediently submit unnecessary food, meds, etc. But its probably worth it for access to places with great workshops or a lot of items?
Conditional access to these locations has been the plan from the beginning. For now, its tied to the Obedient level; soon, the Comm Center will also require completing an upcoming quest.
These changes are part of the preparations for the main multistage quest on Nesoi leaving it and gaining the ability to explore another part of Ahra Prime.
Access to weapons will also change significantly soon (as well as many other items like armor), but that will come after introducing difficulty selection something Ive been working on for a long time. The foundations are already in the game; I just need to calmly verify all the values and voil!

This update introduces the very first melee weapon: the crowbar! A big step forward from bare fistsmore range, more damage, and a much smoother weapon switching system.
Melee weapons begin here starting with the crowbar. You can now pick up a crowbar like any other weapon. Choose whether to equip it directly or stash it in your backpack. (For now, you cant pull it out of the backpack into your handstill thinking about how best to handle that. Itll come after initial testing.)

Stackable Items System
Items like polymer scrap or cloth scrap now stack instead of 20 separate items, you get one with a defined number of uses. Boosters and Basics added to stackable system.

TOXIC LUNGS (formerly Lung Damage)
The old status Lung Damage was misleading it sounded like permanent injury, while it actually represented toxic gas exposure. It has now been renamed to TOXIC LUNGS.
NOW it only occurs with an open visor and unverified air (on the surface breathing is impossible by default, and the atmosphere contains toxic gases).

Replacing the check box with a regular button to drop the backpack. The check box was a remnant, the game\'s key items, such as the air bottle in use, were in the backpack, now they are suspended independently of the EVA Suit, so securing the check box has long been unnecessary.

In the next update, I want to focus on refining the appearance of items after loading from save, for example in POIs, on hangers such as air bottles or suspended bottles on Air Charger - after changing the engine, errors appeared after loading from save - it\'s time to fix it!
Also expect gameplay changes - not big ones yet, but they will definitely include ease of access to some places, the number of items in the world, etc. plus surprises.
In the meantime, I\'m also planning a demo update that hasn\'t been changed for a long time! Since the launch on September 3rd, I\'ve poured everything into it. The game found a few players, but sales have nearly stopped. There are only 16 reviews, and while I know some people truly love the game, the community has gone quiet.

Unexpected Signal from a Stranger!
The new task, quest, and message system may not yet transform gameplay dramatically, but its arrival in the upcoming update marks the beginning of something much bigger.
New System: Tasks/Quests and Messages
Coming in update 0.9.8.2 (this week), this system lays the groundwork for major gameplay changes. While early tests show its stable and well-structured, the initial version includes only a few trial tasks many of which will be revised, expanded, and joined by new ones soon.

Steam Achievements
Many achievements needed fixing, likely due to engine changes. Most now work correctly. Some hidden ones (like Such a Perfect Week!) may activate after todays update. New achievements will arrive with the next major update, but no additional ones are planned for the Demo.
Chronic Diseases
Acute Radiation Syndrome has been in-game for a while. Now, chronic food poisoning joins the roster. Its up to you: risk eating spoiled food or stick to fresh, safe sourcesfound mushrooms, hunted meat. Water purifiers help, but even clean water and food degrade over time. Food now spoils primarily in the world (soon also in containers). More diseases are coming. This is just the beginning.
Difficulty & Disease
Players seeking challenge will find it. Disease mechanics will scale with difficultyabove Wayfarer (easy), theyll have real impact. Currently, difficulty is averaged, but the system already accounts for it. Diseases may be disabled entirely for Wayfarer. Focus remains on higher tiers. Guides will expand soon. For now, Discord is the best place for questions.
Movement Speed
Movement has been tweakedslightly faster overall, with terrain slope now affecting speed both uphill and downhill. This system will evolve and tie into:

Game News & Progress
Here, on the game's website, updates and announcements are sporadic. However, playtest participants have a separate Steamcommunity where they appear with each update HIRAETH game Steam Playtest. I encourage everyone to join Playtest, these are the last days. Recently, the playtest has been completely free, it does not require my approval. As usual, I strongly encourage you and your friends to add HIRAETH to your Steam wishlist.
This is of great importance for promoting the game and not wasting its potential! The game will be released in Early Access after reaching a minimum of 10,000 wishlists, which is necessary for its proper visibility at the time of premiere. Proper promotion, recognition and success will provide me with the opportunity to develop and refine it as planned.

Some statistics
Work on the game has been ongoing since August 2023. The project is currently in the pre-Early Access stage, which is not a bad result for a game this extensive and created by practically one person.
A modest but playable closed playtest was launched on December 7, 2023, and since June last year it has been available to the public, after acceptance - for a few days now, as I mentioned, it has been completely free.
Playtest Participants and Wishlists
Up until May of this year, around 1400 players participated in the playtest from the beginning and the game had around 1500 wishlists. Currently, over 3000 players participate in the playtest and the game has over 4300 wishlists.
This is a great acceleration and motivates me to work even more!

Changes in the Playtest version only in the last half year
Work on the game is most often visible in the playtest, although I do not include everything because not everything requires testing. Significant changes in the last half a year:
dynamic weather system, also with an impact on gameplay;

The open Steam Playtest of the game will soon come to an end in its current form. Recently, there has been a lot of (for a single-player game) participation, which is great and very helpful for the development of the game.
[b]The Playtest will soon turn into a beta test, which will be accessible only to active and regularly reporting testers HIRAETH and supporters of the project on Patreon, Buymeacoffee and PayPal. The playtest itself in its current form will disappear when the game demo is released.

The playtest as it stands now will likely be closed at the beginning of July, with the release of the Demo.
HIRAETH Game Demo
The game's Demo should appear in July. It will be a development demo, showing more or less the state of the game in the Early Access version and will be updated on an ongoing basis. A separate demo will appear for the later version of the full game.

Demo limitations and differences from the game
language versions will appear in the demo gradually, the first version will definitely come out with an English interface, other languages will be added gradually;

[/*]the demo will come out in a Windows version, then a Linux version, for macOS probably later, after the Early Access version is released;

Early Access
What's in the Early Access version?
Currently, the expectations of players, Steam and popularizers have changed significantly in the last few years. A few years ago, HIRAETH could have been released at the level it was at half a year ago and no one would be surprised. I know many games that were released at such a level and are now polished and popular titles (or have faded into oblivion...).
Today, many titles are released, also as indie games, which have little in common with indie games like HIRAETH, are polished, but on the other hand, they don't change much later. I approach Early Access as just the beginning of an adventure, and if you know the game's publishing plans - a lot will change during it!
Current assumptions:
In the first version, the survival sandbox mode is similar to the one currently in playtest. Then there will be tasks, quests and a story mode will gradually appear;
[/*]Training Center and The Nesoi Island with a gradual expansion of the area. There will be no separate locations, simply new areas with different specifics and landscape will appear in the game. I'm already preparing other areas, but vehicles need to be added, which will happen soon;
[/*]There will definitely be the option to set your own keys and controller support, as well as other settings that currently only work partially in playtest;
[/*]The language versions listed on the game's website will appear successively, as Early Access develops;
[/*]In Early Access there will be a full or partial option to choose the difficulty level;
[/*]Full underwater exploration. In playtest this is a new option, only some underwater parts have a design as such;

This is a real Indie game, or rather solodev
Although many people warned me against presenting the game as an indie game and solo dev for marketing reasons, I believe that there is no point in hiding it and that things should be presented as they are. As you can see in the playtest, there are a few people in the game's credits. At the beginning of the work on the project, they did a lot of great work, but for 2 years I have been working on the project exclusively by myself and in all aspects.
What will your support be used for?
First of all, to continue working on the project, releasing the Early Access version. Mainly for basic needs and internet and energy bills. Working on the project takes 100% of my time, apart from the lack of private life, I also cannot take on additional paid work, which would have a disastrous effect on workflow;
If the support is greater - to join the team of other people. Many are willing, the problem is, for example, the lack of possibility to maintain the project server necessary for teamwork, which is expensive for such an extensive project.
How to support?

Regardless of where you support, the rewards are equal - what counts is the amount of the payment (also cumulative), and in return you will receive different rewards. Keep your payment confirmation, it will be the basis for the reward - placing you in the game and the universe HIRAETH.

Perhaps some other possibility will appear, for example the DLC Supporter Pack, but this is an unknown future for now. Such potential DLC will be completely unnecessary to play and will only contain some vanity items, with no impact on gameplay. It will also not be tied to the become a legend in the Hiraeth game universe forever rewards, so now is your last chance!

Game and playtest status
Development on HIRAETH continues with regular Steam Playtest updates. While I'm a solo developer, the pace matches that of larger teams due to the complexity involved.
Remember, the Playtest version isn't a demo but a tool for refining the game, currently lacking full gameplay features and optimized for testing, not final user experience.
PROGRESS
Since our Kickstarter, we've introduced:
- Save/Load System: For player and world states.
- Dynamic Weather System: Including calendar-based events like sandstorms and blizzards.
- New Weapon System: With various weapons and ammo types.
- Enhanced AI: Including flying drones.
- First Vehicle: Among other unannounced updates.

HIRAETH started as nothing more than a dream disguised as a gameplay test by our team lead. After he uploaded the small showcase, he received dozens of propositions, and within a few weeks, he found himself leading an ambitious team from around the globe. This was two years ago, and our team has been hard at work since.

As our team has grown, so has our ambitious efforts to turn HIRAETH into the best survival game on the market. This kickstarter not only serves as a financial opportunity for the game and our team, but also as a symbol of our growth and continued efforts. So much time, work, funds, dedication, and heart has been poured into HIRAETH and it has all led our team here. As we stand on the edge of success, we cant help but feel thankful for the opportunity and the community that has supported us along the way. This kickstarter campaign will build a path toward Early Access, propelling the game, community, and our team to new heights.

Hello space survivalists!
No news on the Hiraeth Steam page is good news! We are preparing the game for open playtesting on Steam, which should start this month - no registration or key activation will be required, just click play![/b]

There will be no demo or early access yet, but a large playable area of Nesoi Island on Ahra Prime and a separate extensive Training Center with numerous tasks that will familiarize candidates with the art of survival

All completed game features will be available, many are still in development. There will also be saving and loading of the game state - without restrictions (i.e. no save limit, but according to the rules of the game at medium difficulty level, i.e. with a one-time save, to be loaded at the start).

We count on fans of the genre testing it, Hiraeth is a real survival game, quite far from arcade games, although with good gameflow. There will be a survival sandbox mode available in playtest, which in Hiraeth is called ETERNAL mode. A story mode called REVELATIONS will be available at a later date, probably in or after Early Access.
