Pausing development

Hey everyone. I'll cut to the chase. I'm pausing development on The World Is Drowning to focus on other projects.

Why it's being paused

It's been a year since I announced the game and I haven't been able to get any progress since then. The main reason is that I lost my vision for the game. Initially, I wanted to make a cool multiplayer dungeon crawler that fixes some of the issues I played in other similar dungeon crawlers. I knew this was a big project but I started developing a prototype and iterating its design. I came to the conclusion that I alone was not enough to make this game happen, so I removed the multiplayer component to make this more manageable for a solo dev/small team. Removing multiplayer was the right decision to reduce the development scope, but it was my first mistake that led me to lose sight of what I wanted to make. I kept working on the prototype, redesigning it to be fun as a single-player game. I had a lot of cool ideas, but I started hating the combat system. It was too similar to the combat system in games like Dark & Darker and Dungeonbourne, and that combat system is one of the things I wanted to improve upon. I wanted it to be a game about finding ways to climb up so you won't drown, so I started wondering if having combat would only make the game lose focus I considered removing combat entirely, and that's when I realized I no longer knew what game I wanted to make. Without a clear vision, I can't make a good game. And if I can't make a game that players will LOVE then why make it at all? I wasn't sure if I wanted to stop working on the project, so I took a long time before deciding to announce it. I had hoped that if I postponed the announcement I would eventually find motivation to work on it again.

What now?

For now, I'm experimenting with other unannounced projects. I have a bunch of other ideas, many of which get dropped early, but that's the nature of prototyping. Eventually, I hope to find an idea I like enough and stick to it. It's also possible I'll return to working on The World Is Drowning in the future, which is why I'm PAUSING development instead of canceling entirely. I know many of you want an Outcore sequel. I don't know if my next project will be one, but do know that some of the ideas I have are related to Outcore. Regardless, I hope whatever I announce next will be something many of you will be able to enjoy.

Announcing "The World is Drowning"

I'm happy to announce my newest game! [strike]Persona 3[/strike] The World Is Drowning [previewyoutube=LhBMEUGeXjw;full][/previewyoutube] "The world is drowning, and everyone you know is gone. If you wish to survive, you'll have to climb to the moon. On your way up youll encounter many traps and monsters, but remember, you must never stop. The sea of blood is coming, and it will rob you of your final breath" The World Is Drowning is a horror roguelike game that focuses on hydrophobia instead of traditional scares

Questions you might ask, and answers I may answer

How many people will work on "The World Is Drowning"? For now, it's just me. Once the game's prototype is further developed, I hope to raise funds and hire more people to help me make this game. Will the game feature multiplayer? Only if the game gets enough funding. It is currently being developed as a singleplayer game. When can I play the game? I plan to hold beta testing rounds in the future. If you wish to know about it once I announce the dates then make sure to wishlist and follow "The World Is Drowning" on Steam, as I'll be announcing it there. I will also announce the dates in The World Is Drowning/Outcore's discord server How can I help the game's development As mentioned above, wishlist and follow the game on Steam, and tell about it to your friends. That's the most direct way there is to help the game until it's available for testing. What engine are you using to develop "The World Is Drowning" Unity, although I'm seriously considering starting from scratch with Unreal Engine. I feel like UE5 tools could fit this game more than Unity, and hopefully result in a better-looking game. Will you still be working on Outcore? Yes, but I will mostly be fixing bugs, supporting players, and adding new languages. While there's some cut content I wanted to add, and I DO have plans for the game in the future, I can't afford to work on it right now as I have to focus on releasing something that earns me money. Turns out you can't sustain your existence if you release a game for free. Does it mean The World Is Drowning will cost money? YES! It will cost ALL of the money!

  • The World Is Drowning is a horror roguelike game that focuses on hydrophobia instead of traditional scares

    • Climb a castle to the moon, always being on the run from the impending arrival of the sea of blood coming from below
    • Someone, or something, is trying to prevent you from reaching the moon. You'll have to overcome obstacles such as locked doors, puzzles, and patrolling enemies. Combat, is NOT always an option you should take
    • Every area in the castle contains a portal to the past. Do you take it, returning to your temporarily safe haven with stolen treasures, or do you keep climbing to the moon?
    • Build a smithery using valued goods from the castle to upgrade your weapons and unlock new abilities
    • If you die in real life, you die in the game

While you wait, how about you try out my other game?
