Hello, hello my beautiful raccoon friends! 2026 is here!! And while we werent able to accomplish everything we set out to do last year, were entering this new one full of ambition and optimism!

December is typically a pretty quiet month for us, and this is no exception. Things are absolutely getting done, but we all make an effort to take a break for the end of the year holidays. You may have also picked up on some extremely subtle clues on Tumblr that I, your favourite (and only) social media raccoon, had to do a lot of travelling and a lot of it went at least a little wrong. So there isnt a huge amount to chat about. But theres also not nothing, so lets look!\n

Music\nCajsa has been working hard on getting the music for good ol Francesco ready to go! Like all the other characters second chapters, Francesco is getting some new music to cover distinct moments in Chapter Two and they are gorgeous. And a little spooky. And sweet. God I love Cajsas music. The new arrangement shes got going of one of the tunes in particular is making me melt, I love it.

Art\nMugi has been working on the big promo image thatll show off Francesco and Oleander this month. We obviously dont want to show that while its in progress (we dont like spoiling surprises in this den!). But since we do wanna show something, how about an image concept we decided not to run with?

It wouldve been a fun picture, though maybe a little deceiving? Francesco is way too nice to be doing this!

Writing\nThis December has been a short but productive month for Tobi! After all the slings and arrows 2025 flung her way, she got a ton of writing done. There are very few exposed bones left on the story skeleton, and a whole lot of meat! Which is my (slightly gory, whoops) way of saying that she made fantastic progress this month. There are a few sections that still need work, plus a little bit of guest writing from moi (youll probably know it when you see it), and some sprites that need to be implemented, but ahhhh it feels good to have the finish line in sight!

And since we dont want to leave you with no peeks at the story

And thats December in the books! Thanks to everyone for your patience, I had a major case of jetlag and holiday slowness to recover from. Were getting back into the groove of work now, and were looking forward to getting even more done! After all, one of our favourite holidays is starting to appear over the horizon

Hello, hello my beautiful raccoon friends! November has been and gone and I dont know about you, but it was a gloomy one here in Sweden. But right now the sun is shining (even if its gonna be setting by 16.00 ) and its a very special day for us!

Thats right!! Its the birthday of everyones favourite grump! Dont mind him, hes just sharpening his knife. And in the spirit of Keir, lets get to work!

Happenings\nWhen we Rotten Raccoons are wearing our publisher hat we go by the name Kaguya Project, and were super excited to announce that weve published our first game under that label!! Knight Case Files is a huge labour of love led primarily by a solo developer thats got so much effort put into it. The arts ornately retro, theres partial voice acting for the whole cast, the story and worldbuilding have been constructed with so much love; weve been honoured to be able to help bring this game to a wider audience. The games fully translated into English and weve got a bundle with them on Steam, so if you bought Obscura on Steam you can get the bundle to get a little discount on Knight Case Files, too (it wont make you buy Obscura again, dont worry about that!).

Besides that, there is of course Keirs big day! Mugis last set of images were centred around a spicy theme, and the theme this time around is a little more refined, as you mightve already caught with Cirrus birthday image. Keir doesnt get a throne (thats not his style), but hopefully the power and refinement concepts are still shining through!

Audio\nWith the ambience pass done, Cajsa has started creating some original music for a major scene in the first part of the route (its a CG moment and everything!). I wish I could share the concept playlist shes got going on or the music clips shes been working on, but Im afraid youll just have to wait and see? Listen? What I mean is that Cajsa is still working her magic.

She also shared a clip earlier this month for a track shed made and was all just putting this here as a reminder that it would be cool to use and it scared the living shit out of me. I love Cajsa so much

Writing Progress\nTobi and I have been hard at work in November! Some of the programming needed to be done in a topsy-turvy order, but the end result of that is that about half of visuals have been programmed into Francescos second chapter! The next target is to wrap up a few challenging scenes towards the end. If Chapter Two for Fran doesnt double the word count of Chapter One, its gonna get within kissing distance of it.

Ive also been casting my eye over the script and have been invited to contribute some worldbuildy elements where I can! Im also starting a list of all the info broker entries that will need to be updated or added. Its been fun!

Progress on the story skeleton on my side den has been sporadic, but progress has been made! I do love writing skeletons, its really fun not taking the story seriously, then overwriting everything while taking it Very Seriously.

And thats it for November! December is a bit of a wildcard for us as a team. On the one hand, its time to enjoy the holidays! Happenings

When we raccoons are wearing our publishing hats we call ourselves the Kaguya Project, and this month we hit a major milestone for the first game were working with, Knight Case Files! We hope to share some fun news about that soon, because hot damn were excited about this game. We are also selling some merch under the Kaguya Project name, so if youre interested in merch, [u]heres a link to that![/u] Were hoping to update the shop a little to add something more in the near future.

Also, as you may have seen above, today (the day this is being posted) is Cirrus birthday! Mugi knocked the birthday image out of the park, as always! Maybe its just because hes so dang tall, but looking up at him feels pretty natural. Unfortunately, I dont have any other art progress to share in this round-up, but I hope Cirrus birthday makes up for it, at least a little.

Audio progress

As for game dev, we hit the first audio milestone, with Cajsa implementing a first pass of ambiances to Francescos second chapter. Cajsas audio work comes in waves, and while the final wave cant be completed until the script is fully locked down and ready to roll, the ambiances are already making the game world feel deeper and more immersive.\n

Tobi has been an absolute champ in October, blasting through huge parts of her story skeleton and getting tons of story done this month.

Just what are these two getting up to?? Tobi has also been adding the visual assets to the chapter and while theres still some work to do in some sections (including a small bit of guest writing from moi, because I put off implementing visuals until later lol), the visuals are largely in place now. Its a big step to have handled, which is amazing!

On my side of the raccoon den, progress has been stop-start, but I am starting to get story skeletons written for Oleander. I have a theory that writing good prose and writing compelling choices are two different skills, so the skeleton pass is absolute garbage nonsense text that cannot go into the final product, but that lets me focus all my energy on writing the choices and branching and making them work (hopefully).

Sorry the delay on this post, for some reason the Scheduling Gods decided that everything important was going to happen in the first week of October and things were busy for all of us. Tobis back!

You may remember in last months round-up that Tobi needed to take a break from Obscura for a little while in order to handle some personal business that required her time and attention. Well, good news: shes back in the saddle and eager to get Francescos second chapter wrapped and out the door!

Were so grateful to everyone who left supportive messages and reminded us that our health comes first when we posted about Tobis break. While wed always love for development to be going faster, its because of your support and patience that weve been able to keep working on Obscura without it becoming a major source of stress for us. Art progress

I cant share any images this time without spoiling the surprise (and we all know youre not supposed to spoil the surprise in Obscura ;3), but Mugi has begun work on the CGs for Francescos route, and they are gorgeous. She is also hard at work putting together the new backgrounds Francesco is gonna need, since he refuses to sit still and not explore everything in the marketplace.

Writing progress

Heres where the news becomes mixed, unfortunately. On my side of the raccoon den, August was very, very busy with non-Obscura work. I had a lot of fun with that work, but it was sad to be away from my boys for so long. Things have simmered down a lot now, thank goodness, though I know Ill be in another Work Vortex come spring.

On the bright side, I have finished the very first step of pre-production for Chapter Three: the powerpoints. To explain as briefly as possible: when drafting the overarching story beats, I write the story in bullet point format, with each slide being a scene (as in a chunk of text that all shares the same goal, tone, or setting). Heres what a slide from Keirs second chapter looks like (with a mild spoiler warning for anyone who hasnt played it).

On Tobis side of the raccoon den, shes been through a few upheavals that means she needs to put down the pen for a while. Shes okay, but when working on Obscura becomes a point of stress instead of something we enjoy doing, that means its time to take a break. Were so grateful to everyone who follows us for being so supportive, even reminding us to make sure were not working too hard. Its hard to express through the medium of text, but the gratitude we feel for you all is absolutely overwhelming.\n

Everyone else is continuing their work on Francescos second chapter while Tobi rests, and were 100% behind her taking that break until she feels ready to start writing again.\n

And thats what happened to us in August. Im looking forward to an extremely normal and boring September for all of us (cross your fingers!!), and also to enjoy all the eyecandy thats bound to come our way in the Fall in Love Fest Arent romance VNs the best?

Ive said it for three July round-ups before \\[note: but this is the first time on Steam!], and Ill say it a fourth time: July is typically the month when Swedes take their summer vacations! But despite us getting chances for rest and relaxation, weve also gotten a lot done this month. So lets go over whats been happening.

Thank you for 200k downloads!

The wildest thing on our list of happenings was definitely doing the math and realising that between Obscura and its demo, if you add up the downloads on Steam and [u]Itch.io [/u] we have hit over 200k downloads! In our first July round-up we were absolutely blown away by getting 7000 downloads, so as you might imagine were pretty tickled by this new milestone. Thank you, everyone who has supported us this far. We literally could not have reached 200k downloads without you.

Oleander Chapter Two

You may have possibly heard about this already, but Oleanders second chapter came out on the 7th of July! We have been thrilled by the positive feedback weve gotten from you about how his story has progressed, and Violet is rubbing her little paws together with evil glee over everyones reactions to the chapters end. Getting this chapter out has been so satisfying, and were so happy to hear you all enjoying it, too!

Theres merch now!

Appropriately for the update for our own merchant gadfly, weve also opened up [u]our own little merch shop for business [/u]! (Dont worry about the Kaguya Project name, thats us when were wearing our publisher hat.) Weve kept the number of items there small for now, but we expect to keep adding items and designs as time goes on, hopefully with some input from the folks on our Discord! Cajsa has gone ahead and updated the Obscura soundtrack to include the music thats been added to Chapter Two so far! As always, her work has been amazing. Ive been blasting the tunes for the entirety of this round-up!\n

Payment processor hullabaloo

So this was not my favourite thing to happen during my vacation >:| Weve put out a full statement a week ago about whats been happening, you can find it on our Discord or Tumblr. The short version is this: payment processors have pressured Steam and Itchio to remove games containing explicit content or else lose the ability to buy and sell games. There has been an immediate and very loud backlash to this, and we encourage folks who disagree with the financial censorship at play to make their voices heard.

Ultimately, weve been very lucky, given the dark and mature content at play in Obscura. So far weve avoided having our game delisted, shadowbanned, or removed in any capacity, and while were keeping our eye on the situation it looks like were in the clear for now. Obviously well update you if that changes. Not exactly the note we wanted to exit July on, but were hoping this ends the way it should: with payment processors backing off, and mature games remaining on both platforms.

In much more cheerful news! Now that Oleanders chapter is in the books, we have turned our focus over to getting Francescos second chapter ready! For Mugi, that means getting visual assets locked and loaded, and let me just say that shes really been putting the work in. Heres a little look at a new asset shes just added to the game which we are very excited to play with!

Alongside 35k of new narrative content, this update has an NPC to talk to who has 10k of background information about the world and characters to shareif you know how to ask for itand another art update thats given us a new sprite system for Oleander (with a new look I think some of you will be very happy about) and a bunch of new backgrounds to flesh out the world. There are also some typos erased and bugs fixed. With any luck, this is the end of our achievement bug woes!

Were so excited and grateful to all of you for being with us as we tell the story of Vespers journey. We hope this addition to the story takes you on a wild roller coaster ride.

Oh, and since were celebrating Oleander, the merchant gadfly, lets share some more fun news. [u]Our merch shop is officially open for business [/u]! Goddamn its been an exciting month! We have been knuckling down on getting Oleanders second chapter ready for release all month, and it has been extremely fulfilling. Its July and were so excited!! So, lets talk about whats happening.

If youve already purchased Chapter 2: Oleanders second chapter will be available to you for free. On Steam the game should update automatically, while on Itchio you can download the fresh build once its ready. Youll be looking for version 2.1.0.

If you havent already purchased Chapter 2: We are keeping the games price the same for this release. You can buy the game now and get Oleanders second chapter when it comes out, or wait for the update to buy the game.

So, what have we been doing? A lot. Mugi revised Oleanders sprites to give him more flexibility and variety in his posing, and shes gifted us with many beautiful backgrounds. Some of them are even going to find their way into the demo, which will also be getting an update to ensure visual compatibility and continuity moving forward. Cajsas musical ventures have also been incredible to hear. Every time she updates the game I get giddy to hear what shes done.

Appropriately for an update featuring a merchant, weve also finally got our merch store ready to go. Itll be open for business on July 5th, so keep an eye on our socials for that update

And thats the update from June! Its a little short here, but hopefully youll forgive us when Oleanders chapter adds 35k words of story content and an additional 10k words of background/lore information via an NPC to the game in a week. Well see you soon.

We recently got a reminder that while weve been posting monthly check-ins to demonstrate that were still alive and getting work done (as well as show little peeks at the work), we havent been sharing these posts with folks who only follow us on Steam! Thats been an oversight on my part, and I apologise. From now on, Steam users can enjoy the same updates as everyone else!

Hello, hello, my beautiful raccoon friends! Its been a lively May here in the raccoon den, and now were enjoying June (in my humble opinion, the best month!). I think the best word I can use for May is productive, as we got a bunch of things on our checklist done! So lets discuss whats happened for us this month, and this time we have headers.

Sales and events
May is a fairly low-key time for us, but we did get to enjoy one sale event! The Otome Games Celebration, hosted by the wonderful Crystal Game Works, was a lovely little sale showing off some of the best in indie otome and getting to smooch fictional men. While the big co-ordinated sale event is over, the event page is still up if youd like to see a big selection of romance VNs about wooing fictional men. I highly recommend it!

We also wanna highlight an event were not taking part in, but really love: the Women-Led Games summer showcase , which will be happening on the 7th (or early on the 8th in certain time zones). Were a team of women ourselves, and we love seeing the work of other women in the industry get highlighted! Theyve also been very welcoming of us and included Obscura in their sale events in the past, which were very grateful for!

Audio
It hurts me that I cant beam audio directly into your brain, because Cajsa is killing it. There are a couple of scenes that spend an extended amount of time in one area, and shes been making sure the music that plays for these scenes has variations to keep up the aural interest. This is one of the bits of feedback I offered this month, to get an idea of where shes going with her work.


Art
Mugi has been working hard on updating Oleanders sprites for his second chapter, giving him a general sprucing up and also giving me some very exciting new options to play with. There is a lot to be excited about, but one thing I really wanna highlight is that the new sprite system enables me to do stuff like these poses


which keen-eyed observers may notice were not possible in his original sprite set! It goes without saying that I am very excited to make good, good use of the new opportunities this presents.

Writing
Writing has progressed really nicely this month! Tobi needed to revise some of her planned material, but that ended up producing some really exciting new ideas that Im hyped to watch come into play. She also wrote a nice chunk of a big emotional scene were really excited for you all to see. Going through it now, my reaction is just

On Oleanders side, Cajsa caught a few visual bugs while programming the music, so Ive been bugfixing. There are some old-ass bugs in the game code that I am just so happy to finally be getting rid of. Im also starting on getting the new sprite system for Oleander working while being minimally disruptive to the stuff thats already in the game. Its going to be super interesting work, and since Im going to need to dive through the whole script again, I think Ill keep a typo tally and see how many little errors snuck through my spellcheck. And speaking of bugfixing

We want you!
Before major releases weve invited players to help us beta-test the game to ensure its bug-free, as well as keeping typos to a minimum and ensuring our accessibility tools are working as intended. While we arent quite ready to invite players into the testing phase yet, we wanted to offer you a heads up that all beta-testing will be done through our Discord. Its open to all 18+ players (and if youre playing Obscura youre definitely at least 18), and while well share announcements on our social media pages when we begin the beta-test process, the best way to stay informed about the beta-test is to be on our Discord .

Hello, beautiful raccoon friends!

We're excited to announce we've been selected to take part in the amazing Storyteller's Festival, an amazing Steam event that celebrates the best of video game narratives. Obviously, we're honoured and excited to be taking part for the second year in a row. There are so many incredible stories to experience, so please check out the event!
But we're not going to celebrate without giving you a little something as well. For the Storyteller's Festival, we recorded about 45 minutes of behind-the-scenes talk while playing through the first sections of Keir's and Cirrus' second chapters. This time, co-writers Tobi and Violet and audio master Cajsa had a chat, and we had a lovely, giggly time of it!

Happy Valentines Day, my beloved raccoon friends! I am here in my fanciest party dress to share the love, and theres a lot of love to share today! Theres three things on our agenda today that we think youll be pretty happy about: a game update, an update to our studio that were excited to share, and finally news about merch.

Lets talk about in-game content first: today were releasing Obscura 2.0.2! This is the small update we promised at the start of the year. This update fixes a couple of small errors in the Chapter Two content where characters would talk about things that the player could choose to skip, whoops! But even better, this update contains an extension to the Extra Story, giving you a second date with Vesper.

The Extra Story is unlocked in the Extras menu by reaching a good or neutral end to all four love interests first chapter, and the first part can be unlocked and played in the demo! If you unlocked it in the demo, it should still be unlocked in the paid version of the game (and if its not, thats a bug! Please report it!). To see the new date, youll need to reach the end of either Keir or Cirrus second chapter. Thats Ending 25 or Ending 31, for those keeping score at home.

Mugi made proper standing sprites for Vesper, as well as a CG to unlock, to really max out their charisma levels! We hope you enjoy your second date with the MC of our romance game, its been a ton of fun to work on.

Now, lets talk about Rotten Raccoons! Without getting too deep into the nitty-gritty, Rotten Raccoons itself wont be making any major changes. Were happy with the way were structured at the moment, and were going to keep making Obscura alongside our regular work. But we are building out our business a little more, and for that we have to introduce the Kaguya Project!

The simple explanation is that our producer, Yamiochi, works in helping Japanese games get a foothold in the Anglophone game industry, and she wants to fulfil her dream of being an indie visual novel publisher using this experience. So Yamiochi, Mugi, and myself (Violet) are starting an indie visual novel publisher! Weve already started work with a game being made by a team of two(!), and were excited to see what the future holds for this project. Personally, this is extremely exciting stuff!

But if all youre worried about is Obscura, which is fair enough, the only thing you really need to know is that Kaguya Project is made of Rotten Raccoons team members, and you can rest easy when you see Obscura merch being sold through the Kaguya Project name. Its all us, we havent made a deal with an outside party! Were just consolidating things under the Kaguya Project umbrella to keep things simpler on our end.


And oh, whats that about merch? Thats right, were finally getting ourselves together to make a little merch line-up! Were still waiting to see a few products to approve them before they go on sale (Mugi is not going to let sub-par prints go out!), so were not launching the shop just yet, but we felt like the time was right to confirm that its happening!

Were grateful for your patience while you wait a little longer for us to be open for business. Were starting fairly small in terms of the number of things well be selling, but were extremely excited about what the future holds! And since we didnt want to leave you on just that, Mugi has made a little preview of an edit shes done for one of our future offerings. Remember the gorgeous art she did for the Chapter 2 announcement? Well!

Happy Valentines Day from the raccoon den!

Two gentlemen have been waiting in the wings all this time, and now they have the opportunity to take centre stage. Steam, meet Francesco and Oleander! Francesco is a ray of sunshine in the underground marketplace, so sweet and sincere it almost seems unbelievable. Or, maybe you dont believe it after all? The great merchant Oleander, on the other hand, is open about the kind of man he is: a hedonist, a flirt, and a gadfly, and in need of a new assistant. Hes capable of opening a lot of doors, but he might not tell you where he ultimately wants to go.

Both of them can now be met in the Chapter One demo, bringing the total word count of the demo to about 70k words. The update also features tweaked sprite transitions, general bug fixes and typo cleanup, and one small bonus feature thats been in high demand on our Tumblr account (if you know, you know!).

This update is fairly substantial, so there is a risk of bugs or visual glitches occurring if you load old saves. If you load an old save and are experiencing problems, we recommend starting a new save.

Whether its your first or fifth or fiftieth trip to the marketplace, we hope you get to turn down the lights, put on some headphones, and enjoy your stay.
