The Red Selene | Devlog #2

Are you feeling unwell lately? having excessive caughs? some blood drops from your nose? Can't sleep because of reddish nightmares? the red dust, the true power is kicking in! and You are on your way to becoming immortal...
Hey folks! hope you all doing great and having fun in the coming holiday season! We've been hard at work in the last couple of months and we are excited to share our progress with you guys! in this Devlog we are going to share the challenges of creating a 2D horror game, with our sole goal to scare YOU! while making it fun and entertaining...

Jump Scares

Our first step in making the horror was to get creative, we simply found out that ordinary jump scares are not enough for a 2D game so... We've created a vast unique number of jump scares, all designed and created in unique ways, we've created complex animations for each of the characters and come up with narrative and game flow-driven jump scares, where they can scare you to death even in the 2D Space!

Enemy Design Changes

A major change in our design from the original idea was to categorize our enemies, our original idea was to make a city of different-looking enemies and pack them into different classes. To make the game more fluent and easy to get we've categorized each enemy into a class. this gave us the opportunity to work on different enemies with different capabilities even wider and in a more creative way. the players can now easily define the strengths and weaknesses of each enemy by looking at them visually,

Text logs

Text logs are now available in the game we've implemented them, each text log describes a narrative and an event that happened in the colony... gotta look around and collect them to unlock deeper history, narratives, and events that occurred on EC-21

We've been working very hard and there is a lot to share with you guys... for now, we are gonna warp up this Devlog, for Devlog #3 we will be sharing level design progress, Metroidvania elements, and exploration in the game. EC21 JANUS - The World's largest expiation space colony

GENERAL INFORMATION

In the year 2830, EC-21 JANUS, An Explorer colony with the capacity of carrying 1.000.000 colonists into the galaxy, this explorer colony is unlike other ones, it is capable of carrying multiple massive ships and equipment to research and harvest valuable planets and moons. EC-21 JANUS has the capability to fully go stealth and block all the signals as it was specifically designed for a classified mission to research on a moon called Red Selene

MISSION AND TIMELINE

On the 24th of October 2830, EC-21 JANUS departed from Florida's Cape Canaveral station, with the destination of Imperium System. It carried over 1 million colonists consisting of diverse fields of professions to investigate and research a newfound element in the planet ZO-2041 b's Moon, The Red Selene.

EQUIPMENTS

The space colony is equipped with over 300 units of different robotics, from mechanical to military, scientific, and medical all placed to make the mission as smooth as possible.

EC-21 JANUS is estimated the size of New York City, it is a flying city with all the rooms and facilities to perform in different galaxies and systems.

The Making Of "The Red Selene" Part #1 - Re-designing Aaron

Hello everyone! First, we would love to thank you all for joining us! This is our very first dev log, we would love to share our process in development and we would share them in a friendly way as dev logs! Today we are going to talk about designing Aaron, Our main character. and what would be our approach to enhancing the character?

THE FIRST IDEA

Can we make a pixel art horror game?

Our first approach was, that it is going to be super challenging to make a horror game in a 2D space with pixel art, so we came up with cartoony and small-sized characters. The idea was to make it cute and gory and the same time while using the capabilities of a small cartoony character in gameplay and design.

Up there, you can find early character sketches that we've made for Aaron. Below you can also find the next step process of our small-sized character. we've also designed different outfits and concepts for the main character.

Once the characters are shaped up, we know this is NOT what we want in the game, To be able to transfer fear every element must be believable, and that's how we've changed our direction to the realistic design approach.

THE REALISTIC APPROACH

Let's make it more believable and realistic

Now we've decided to scale up the character to make it more realistic, We wanted to make Aaron look stronger, more believable, and more realistic in motions and actions,

The first sketches defined Aaron's suit much more, what capabilities it has and what are the character's technical limitations are, and how it can expand the character's motions and actions and show more details.

We wanted to showcase every angel of Aaron from early on as a bounty hunter who has mixed emotions and feelings from his childhood. And our efforts led to what we have right now in the game,

After a couple of sketches, we did the character mainly from pixel to pixel from the base. Below you can find the walk animation of the character.

Yet the question that remains... is Aaron, Aaron enough? we believe NOT!

The Re-Designing

To be perfect and nothing less is acceptable

We believe in perfection and we are obsessed with it, that's why we believe that Aaron is not Aaron yet, it can be way better in showing its emotions, we want to show every small pose and action that the character can have.

And that's how we've started the re-design model, we'll share the new look of Aaron soon and it is going to blow you away! A Story of LOVE, HORROR, AND FAMILY
In the year 2858, Join Aaron a galaxy bounty hunter, on his journey to EC-21 JANUS, a state-of-the-art space colony on a secret mission to research and harvest THE RED SELENE, a moon with robust material and an unknown element, and find the dark horrors and mysteries of this ship.

As in Aaron's last dog fight with bandits, his ship is heavily damaged while making his space travel through a space portal he'll end up in an uncoordinated system and finds out the EC-21 JANUS, he'll embark on the classified space colony to seek help repairing his ship to only find the deep silence in the colony and the dark mysteries behind it. Through the roller coaster of his journey, he'll find out he can't relate more to EC-21 JANUS.

Survive through the darkest horrors and fight the most brutal creatures in the galaxy to discover your story of TRUTH, LOVE, AND REVENGE!

Your survival depends on how you fight, whether in the quiet corners of the EC-21 JANUS or in the middle of the waves of the monster running to you, you'll have to cut the legs, use your axe, and find a new weapon when you are out of bullets to make the survival happen!
