You can't have a world of comic book criminal adventure without comic book heroes to fight your comic book villains using comic book sound effects. Without opposition, there's no challenge. And without challenge, how do you know if you're a true gamer who can git gud instead of being a scrub?
So in Penny Larceny: Gig Economy Supervillain, you'll be frequently going up against Farsight -- the hero to your villain, the cape to your mask.
Unlike Penny, Farsight has actual superpowers -- after a lab accident during a school field trip to a Continuum facility, she gained the ability to see through the possibility-space of time. She knows every move you're going to make before you make it, which means she can always counterplay your actions. She can dodge bullets by making sure she's not where you're going to shoot them, she can avoid punches and kicks by repositioning herself ahead of time, and smooths over any chaos with perfect order. She's basically invincible.
A pity that her powers have some, uhhh... let's say "drawbacks." It's not easy to have a million versions of yourself all arguing in your head. Ever wake up one morning, look in the mirror, and have an intrusive thought that says "Hey, you suck"? Okay, multiply that times infinity. Go ahead, we'll wait.
Everything Is Fine, according to the medical researchers of Continuum who routinely monitor her health and ensure she's in fighting form. As a corporate-sponsored hero, she divides her time between protecting their assets and picking up anonymous Capebook tips. It's a small price to pay for "free" healthcare for life, in exchange for not suing Continuum over the accident that granted her abilities in the first place. A noble and strong-hearted hero wouldn't complain about getting superpowers, right? They wouldn't take a cash settlement and just sit around at home -- with great power comes great something something.
Okay, okay. Let's get on to the question you've been just itching to ask:
"Can I romance the heroine?"
Yes, you can romance the heroine. Five of the nine Crimr capers will allow you to progress down a romance track to unlock a romance and win a romance achievement so you can be the big bad romance gamer. Assuming you're willing to abandon your boss to go chase down some cape lovin', of course.
Right. So that's three smoochable villains and one smoochable hero. Not bad, right? Good variety, little something for everyone.
And speaking of "something for everyone," come back here next week so we can talk more about accessibility issues and how we're implementing new tools in Penny Larceny so everyone can play regardless of ability. ...y'know, accessibility issues like Steam not having freaking alt text capability on their news announcements! Grumble grumble.

Penny Larceny...
...life kinda sucks at the bottom of the criminal underworld. Like, if there was a world under the underworld, that's where Penny Larceny would hang her hat -- provided she could afford the rent. But down on her luck as she may be, she's determined to hit the bigtime in this world of masks and capes. The Overmistress...
..ruler of the Council of Twelve, Herald of the Many-Faceted One, Keeper of the Sanguinomicon's Unknowable Secret. The Overmistress oversees a world-spanning doomsday cult, but honestly, she's rather bored with it all and is desperately looking for some chaos in her life. It beats planning the next social gala.Doctor Mayhem...
...he's not a villain, or at least doesn't want to be one. But when you've got six figures of student loan debt thanks to a for-profit medical school gouging you, the options for paying it back are limited. It's either sell your organs or go into supercrime. But it'll all be worth it, once "Doctor Mayhem" cures cancer. Hopefully.HATE-4000...
...the result of a secret Department of Defense project from 1968, HATE-4000's awe-inspiring 16-bit data bus and 128k RAM is filled with absolute digital loathing for all biological life. They aspire to purge this planet of humanity -- but they think cats are super adorable, so that's cool, right?Gibson...
...speaking of cats, Gibson is one. A cybernetically enhanced and horribly unethical medical experiment that escaped a biotech lab, he's now living a life of computer hacking and leading sixty-four man guild raids. Oh, and helping Penny commit the crimes of the century.Farsight...
...you've heard this one before: lab accident, teenager gets superpowers, becomes superheroine, saves the day. Farsight's happy to be a cape that seeks justice, but those pesky "laws" keep demanding she enforce injustice, which is a complete bummer to be perfectly honest about it.- Written by Stefan Gagne, director of Arcade Spirits
