Prepare for the deepest, most intricate simulation of a world that has ever been created.

The legendary Dwarf Fortress is now on Steam! Build a fortress and try to help your dwarves survive, despite threats of starvation, dragons, and madness.

In this complex construction/management/roguelike simulation, every generated world brings a unique challenge, whether it’s dwarves with their own simulated personalities or aquifers. Observe what makes your civilization fall into eventual decline, and learn for next time… until something else inevitably goes wrong.
The combat model includes skills, body parts, material properties, aimed attacks, wrestling, pain, nausea, various poison effects, and much more.
It’s difficult to convey the depth of the generation. Hundreds of animals and monsters, many of which are randomly created for each world, as well as generated poetry, musical forms, instruments, and dances for your dwarves to practice and perform. A dynamic weather model tracks wind, humidity, and air masses to create fronts, clouds, storms, and blizzards. Over two hundred rock and mineral types can appear, in their proper geological environments.
Remember: Losing is fun!

Nothing substantial is new or changed, under the hood. It’s still good old Dwarf Fortress, but with graphics support and music by default. A few bells and whistles won’t change that.
You may already be familiar with the tile set mod packs from Michał “Mayday” Madej and Jacob "Ironhand" Bowman. Together, their efforts are creating an all-new tileset featuring brand new pixel art by artists Carolyn Jong and Neoriceisgood. Dwarf Fortress Steam edition will have a 15 track soundtrack by Dabu, Simon Swerwer and Águeda Macias including tracks in the Dwarvish language!
It's never been easier to start playing! We've improved the new player experience with the addition of tutorials to guide you through building your first fort and keeping your dwarves happy.

Command your dwarves as they search for wealth in their generated mountain. Your dwarves will need a steady supply of food and beer, but they’ll also need your guidance in surviving attacks from hostile civilizations, the wilderness, or even the dead.

- Not just generated geometry -- a whole simulated world. Generated rise and fall of civilizations, personalities, creatures, cultures, etc. Infinite hours of gameplay.
- Now with beautiful pixel graphics!
- Learn the basics with in-game tutorials
- A lifetime “living” project - created/updated since 2003, with no end in sight
- Generate your unique world and manage a bustling colony of dwarves, even as they probably mine towards their eventual demise.
- A new endless hobby, just for you!

Siege Update Release Date
\n\n
Hey Urists!\n\nIts Alexandra here with exciting news about Siege update. You wont have to wait very long because it will be releasing onto the main branch November 3rd! Watch the release date trailer showcasing some of the new features coming:\n\n\n\n
Whats Coming in the Siege Update?
\n\nNew enemy weapons: Battering rams, trolls can now carry giant pickaxes and blocks for building \n\nNew enemy behaviours: Enemy behaviour is now classified into different roles (charge, hang back, ambush) and can path around dangerous areas. Engineers can build floors and stairs. Enemies can break through fortifications and raised bridges. They can also dig underground through natural walls. Goblins also bring more kinds of mounts and their demonic leader \n\nNew weapon: Bolt thrower. This is a siege engine with a fixed location but can be turned freely in any direction. It fires faster than a crossbow and the ammo bin can hold 100 bolts. Siege operator skill matters but unskilled operators can use it more effectively than they use hand-held weapons. \n\nReworked weapons: Ballistas and catapults are more effective\n\nChanges to traps: Goblins can rescue caged allies. Water and magma traps will not be as effective as before, so youll have to try a variety of defensive tools instead of relying just on one, to properly protect your forts.\n\nExpect detailed patch notes with all the changes and features for the siege update on launch day. Old saves should still work with the update, except for great picks and the new mounts which use the new behaviours. If you load an old save, trolls will come with small picks instead of great picks.\n\nIf you want a more peaceful experience, you can turn off digging, deconstructing, and building separately, and also toggle the speeds. Or you can turn them off entirely. \n\nNew Splash Art
\n\nWe also have new splash art for the update from Kitfox artist Thea Kent, who also made the art for Fortress and Adventure Mode. Can you name all the enemies shown here that you might have to defend against?\n\n
\n\nWhats Next?
\n\nAfter this Siege update is out, of course there will inevitably be important bugs to fix. And then after that, Tarn hopes to start looking into more magical content and features, such as warlords and demon-trained sorcerers that could make sieges on your fort even more dangerous and varied. But as you probably have heard us say before, the fundamentals of magic itself are a fairly large and complicated segment of the world generation to contend with, so were glad Tarns able to make sieges more fun (and fully-functional!) in the meantime.\n\n-Alexandra[ 2025-10-16 14:30:45 CET ] [Original Post]
