Haiku workshop #3 results

Hey everyone!

Thank you all for participating in the haiku workshop #3! This one actually holds the record for most entries! I'm super happy to see you're still interested and participating. I hope you enjoyed the update! And once again, congratulations for making a haiku and putting it out there! It's not as easy as it looks. So let's see what we have here this time:

I must say, quite a fruitful one! Let's see what we can make of it:
  • The new backgrounds have been quite popular, representing 80% of the submitted entries! I'm glad you liked them, hopefully they provide a bit more variation in expressivity.
  • People are divided on the wall topic. Some insist they shouldn't be built ("don't start a new wall"), some say they rise, some insist they don't, at least not "near [their] nice camp". Some promote their insulative properties ("mute her kind with spiced walls"), only to be contradicted by a person named Rose who, apparently, can't be muted by any wall. Divisive stuff.
  • Then again, in the other entries walls tend to just lay there because they were already built anyway. And in time they can gather psychoactive condiments or abrasive flowers, which apparently is deemed pleasant.
  • On that topic, "spice" was used a lot more than I thought it'd be. You guys've seen Dune recently too?
  • Kudos to the person who simultaneously managed to dodge the wall subject AND I guess potential lawsuits by inventing a character named "wallly" with three L's. The performance must be saluted.
  • Overall, I really like the atmosphere of quietness, almost desolate peace that emerges from the entries as a whole. "wall", "hush", and "blind/mute/deaf" was a great combo in that regard, which has been used in lots of cool ways. Then again, some entries chose instead to enthusiastically play with swans and cut grapes in a very exclamatory manner, which I find very funny.
  • I also enjoyed the depiction of the flower game, which wasn't easy with the provided words. "Cut me kindly while we play" is I feel a great verse, highly evocative, bittersweet and with very ear-pleasing alliterations. Congrats!
There could be a lot more to say, but I feel I've rambled enough. Anyway, thanks again! As always, it's a pleasure to read you and see all the diversity produced in this very constrained exercise! Let me know in the comments if you'd like these workshops to continue! I think once every few weeks can be a nice rythm. See you next time! MarechalBanane

Will The Man Get Frog is a semi-random writing game in which you compose haikus (japanese short poems) in a cute and soothing atmosphere. Carefully crafted constraints will help you be creative regardless of your writing skills. The minimal design gives you space to focus, explore and express yourself. No achievements, no scoring, no leaderboard. It's about you and the words spending quality time together.

A game session can take from 5 minutes to... well, hours. It all depends on how carried away you get. Sometimes you just want a little distraction, and sometimes it gets more introspective. Both are great ways to enjoy the game!

FEATURES

  • Thousands of words to choose from!
  • Four beautiful pixel art backgrounds available, one per season!
  • An Inspiring chip-tune soundtrack made by the talented c.diffin!
  • Gif recording system: share your art with the world!
  • Streamer-friendly! Ask your viewers for advice, or have a writing workshop all together!
  • Asynchronous multiplayer-ish! "Shared Game" mode allows players to compose with the same word set using a clever password system. Get together, play and compare your works, or play by yourself, send your friends a poem and wait for theirs!
  • ... That's it, really. It's a small game.

Ok, my poem is ready. What do I win?

Well, you win… a .gif of your creation, to use however you see fit!

Maybe you'll be so proud that you'll post it on every social media.
Maybe it'll remind you of a loved one. Why not send it like a digital postcard?
Maybe it'll be personal, so you'll simply keep it close. As a souvenir.
Maybe it won't make much sense. That's okay, things don't always have to make sense.
Maybe you just won't like it. That's okay too, writing is hard. You can try again later.

Point is, I can't tell what you'll get out of it.
But it's probably worth exploring!
