Version 1.4.0

The big thing with this patch is game balance, here are the highlights:

  • The 'Haze' card that has been wreaking havoc in the meta for the last few days has been made a lot weaker. It now takes 2 hp to activate (rather than just 1) and it also makes your unit get -1 power until end of turn, making repeated attacking much less effective. The card is still being carefully watched, and if it keeps being a problem additional measures against it will be taken.
  • 'Reinforced Walls' now only adds 1 armor (and no Spell Immunity).
  • 'Sentry Tower' now has one less hp.
  • The ability on 'Moving Castle' only affects creatures (not all units).
  • The struggle to make 'Buoy' playable continues :) It has been granted two more keywords; Spell Immunity and Duelist.
  • 'Final Concoction' isn't legendary anymore, that was a typo when it was introduced in version 1.3.0.
  • The following units have had their cost/power/hp/speed adjusted in various ways: Dark Princess, Mist Troll, Forest Troll, War Elephants, Snurk, Sly Dragon, Shady Marketplace, Desert Troll, Loyal Knight, Backstabber, Imp Renegade. Some for the better and some for the worse!
There are also a few important bug fixes:
  • Now each player receives a starting hand even when the last player times out in the first round of the game.
  • You can't accidentally play cards from hand while choosing a target for an ability.
  • Only players who have played at least one complete game (resulting in a win/loss/draw) are listed in the rankings.
  • Flying units that are pushed off the game board will die instead of being stuck indefinitely (this fix only affects matches played with card pool version 4 and above).
Enjoy!

Version 1.3.1

This small patch makes the lobby must better organized and easy to use. Here are the main points:

  • Separate tabs for active games and challenges.
  • Support for hiding incoming / outgoing / open challenges.
  • Icons that show the time setting for the match, at a glance.
  • Bug fixes for notifications in the lobby.

Version 1.3

This update (version 1.3) includes 18 new cards, and numerous tweaks to the existing ones. A few examples:

  • The 'Legionary' who can push other creatures away (perhaps to their doom?)
  • A 'Paratrooper' who can spawn anywhere on the board.
  • Several new useful buildings, and a card to help keep them safe.
  • One more card to help plant based decks.
  • A new medallion.
  • Two new "Legendary" (limit 1 per deck) creatures.
  • A very efficient aggro creature, but it will cost you something else...
Many of the old cards have gotten their mana costs adjusted, usually by adding more color requirements. This is to avoid too many "good stuff" decks that play a four colors, since it's often easy to get access to a few random hexes during the course of a game. Reliably getting two or three of each color is much harder... so design your decks accordingly. There's also a bunch of bug fixes and general improvements, here are the most important ones:
  • The map generation for 3- and 4-player games has been tweaked to make hexes a bit easier to access and not accidentally lock one player out of the game.
  • Lots of clarifications on card abilities to increase confidence when using them.
  • The cost of activated abilities is presented more clearly in the UI.
  • Prevent AI from crashing in certain situations.
  • Proper cleanup of controlled hexes and units when a player resigns.
  • Elo calculations in multiplayer games is more fair (losing used to lower your rank too much).
Thanks a lot to everyone who has played the game, all of these changes are a response to your feedback! Keep it coming, and see you on the battlefield :)

Version 1.2 new mage ability & bot

The new version of Manahex has two major features:

A new mage ability

All mages now have an ability called "Redeem", which lets you discard a card to draw a new one. This also costs an action, so you can't do it on the same turn that you're taking control of a hex. The idea with the ability is that it lets you put more narrow "silver bullet" cards into your deck without taking to much of a risk. If the card isn't good in the particular matchup you're playing, just throw it away and get a new one. The ability also gives you something productive to do if you're locked out of new hexes to control. In general I hope it will increase the strategic depth of the game even more. Thanks to my friend Ossian for this idea!

AI bot

There's now a simple AI that you can practice against (1v1) instead of playing online. It's definitely not playing at the level of the top Manahex players, but if you're new to the game it might give you a bit of a challenge, I hope! I've marked the bot as "beta" for now. The long term plan is to add a proper single player campaign, where the bot will be configured with different play styles and special decks. That will take a while longer though... As always, if you have questions or ideas for the game head over to our discord! Cheers, Erik

Version 1.1.0

First of all, thanks to everyone who has tried the game! Here is new major patch that addresses som problems that have been found.

New features

  • Undo! There's now a button below the 'Pass the turn' button that you can click to undo your latest move. In certain situations (for example after drawing a card) you are not allowed to undo, since that would be a form of cheating.
  • It is now possible to search for all card characteristics in the deck editor (type, rules text, stats, etc). Additionally, the deck editor layout has been improved, and mana filter buttons have gotten appropriate colors.
  • A big "Your turn" banner is shown across the screen each time your turn begins.
  • It is more clear that you are in discard phase, and how many cards you have left to discard.
  • The scroll wheel works in deck picker, so that you can select what deck to use in a more convenient way.
  • A skull is shown in the player portrait when the mage has been defeated.
  • The list of ongoing games has been made less cluttered, but all the old information (and more) is shown when you hover the button with the mouse.
  • The "Help" button has been renamed to "Help & more". Also, the ranking top-list were moved into here to make room for future game modes and to de-emphasize the importance of the rankings.
  • Show who's online of the players in the "Waiting for match to start" popup.
  • Various rules clarifications in card texts.
  • No extra time is added when you make a move in async games (only 'Live' ones).
  • The turn timer flashes in red when you're running out of time.
  • The HP heart shows more clearly if the unit has taken damage or not.
  • The preconstructed decks have been adjusted to be less complex and more different from each other.

Bug fixes

  • A bug on MacOS where the mouse clicks were not registered correctly has hopefully been fixed.
  • A bunch of minor problems have been addressed.

Card adjustments

A lot of cards have been tweaked to be more playable, and in a few cases nerfed to avoid having them show up in every game. Note that old matches will still use the initial card pool. Changes:
  • 'Rage of the Woods' affect all non-mage permanents instead of just creatures.
  • 'Preacher', 'Blockade', Irfhnir's Blessing, 'Medallion of Venom' & 'Medallion of Immunity' are all cheaper to play.
  • 'Convert' costs 1 more mana.
  • The range of the 'Aid' ability on 'Nun' is now limited to 1-3 hexes.
  • 'World Tree' now has only one activated ability, and another one that triggers at end of turn.
  • 'Swan' makes other enemy units gain 'Stationary' in addition to 'Spell blocked'. The range of the ability has been increased to 2.
  • 'Orb Wrangler' has three abilities instead of two, and they are hopefully more interesting and unique.
  • 'Buoy' now has 1 power, which makes its 'Lethal' keyword make sense.
  • 'Mist troll' has changed the subtype from 'giant' to 'troll'.
Finally, all tokens now have mana costs which matters if they are bounced up to your hand (you can then recast them for their cost). Previously they were free to recast.

  • Overview

Manahex is a fantasy-themed card and board game for 2-4 players. Its played against other players online, either in short sessions (10-45 minutes depending on player count) or asynchronously. At its core it's a classic card battling game, but the resource acquisition and fighting takes place on a board instead.

    Gameplay

Before playing, a random map of hexes is generated. Then each player chooses a deck and the starting position for their mage. Starting hands are drawn and the game begins. Each turn you can move your mage to an adjacent hex and take control of it. The color of each hex signifies which type of mana it produces, and you can use the mana of all your hexes to pay for cards in hand. All your hexes replenish at the beginning of each turn so you'll be able to afford more expensive cards as the game progresses. Some of the cards are spells, which can directly affect things in the game (e.g. deal damage to another mage). Other cards are creatures or structures, which are created next to your mage on the map. Most creatures can move around and attack enemies, and a lot of them also have magical abilities. The structures are stationary, but usually have powerful ways to boost your other units.

Each mage starts the game with 12 HP, and if that number ever reaches 0 that mage is knocked out of the match. The last mage standing is the winner!

    Kinds of Mana

The game contains four kinds of mana
    • Light – the mana of the sun
    • Dusk – the mana of the moon
    • Moss – the mana of nature
    • Rust – the mana of the machines

    Deck building

In this game you construct your deck before you start playing, just like in any old-school trading card game. All of the cards of the game are unlocked for all players – there are no in-app purchases. You can construct your deck using the built-in editor or by editing its text file directly. If you don't want to make your own just yet, there's also a range of preconstructed decks included with the game.

    Online play

To play Manahex you need a "Secret Supermarket" account, which is completely free and only takes a few seconds to sign up for. In the future you'll be able to use the same account to play other digital board games developed by me (Erik Svedäng). If my company ever has to cancel its operations, I pledge to release the server code (which just uses Rust and Postgres) so that people can set up their own private instances.

When you play Manahex, your wins and losses are recorded to give you a rank. It can be used to find other players of a similar skill level, and to climb the competitive ladder.

    Main features

    - Construct your own suite of unique decks and pick the right one depending on the map
    - Fun spells and creatures that can manipulate the hexes, push each other around, grant special powers, and much more!
    - Support for both "realtime" matches and asynchronous play
    - Hand-painted and unique art for each card in the game
    - No in app purchases, everything is unlocked for all players
