Introducing Hive Jump Survivors

Attention Jumpers!


After all these years, the lines of communication from the H.S.A. have come alive once again. Tales of lone survivors from missions past have reached us. Brave soldiers have retreated to the planets' surfaces after failed attempts to eradicate from within. These Jumpers must withstand the renewed onslaught that awaits them. They must do what they can... to survive. Read on! Wishlist Hive Jump Survivors on Steam Today! Like the original, players will control a Jumper as they seek to blast away aliens using a variety of upgradable weapons, utilities, and grenades. However, things are a bit different this time as you control a lone survivor from a troubled mission. After failing to nuke the hive from within, you have been forced to retreat to the planets' surface. Now, you stand alone against the onslaught that awaits you. No new recruits will aid you. The good news is that you can still access upgrades such as powerful flame throwers, devastating grenades, and critical utilities such as the healing totem. Will they be enough to survive?

The Gameplay


Hive Jump Survivors was derived from the fun ambush moments found in the original. Players will start alone on a procedurally generated planet's surface with basic firepower. Hordes of aliens will begin to swarm the player who must fend them off one by one. As goo drops, it can be reinvested in weapon upgrades both old and new. Players must hold out as long as they can before the "boss" of that planet reveals itself as the final challenge. So, once again players can enjoy trying various upgrade strategies that will help them survive within the alien hives. This time, permanent upgrades can be applied by collecting a new resource called Amber. This makes each new "run" different and more exciting than the last. We could write forever about what's new and what's returning, but watching the sneak peek trailer below will do a much better job of getting you excited for another jump! A Fresh Look


Hive Jump Survivors is receiving a complete visual overhaul from the original. The theme and lore will carry over, yet the new look and point of view will support the "holdout" style gameplay, allowing more game space for the action.


The Team


We're developing Hive Jump Survivors in partnership with a local development team called Joystick. This trio of developers has close ties with Graphite Lab, and lead efforts on our 2022 release called Kombinera. We're also enlisting the help of Sonamu Games, a new development initiative that you will hear more about in the coming months. Several core members of the original game are connected with the game as well. Matt Raithel (EP and concept artist on Hive Jump), David Greenfield (Lead QA on Hive Jump) are leading efforts from Graphite Lab's side.

A Plan for Release


Early Access was critical to our success with Hive Jump. So, once again, we're working to involve the players in the development of Hive Jump Survivors. We hope to bring the game to Early Access this fall where we will fine tune the experience with the support of players just like you. While development process can be a bit fluid, we expect to be in Early Access about 6 months. During this time we plan to add more content, more maps, more enemies and more action! We expect the Early Access version to be fully playable and worthy of playtime. We'll announce more as we work through development. The biggest help you can offer us at this time is to help spread the word and share your excitement for this next phase of the franchise. Wishlist Hive Jump Survivors on Steam Today! As we announce this new venture, you may wonder if the original will receive updates at this point. Sadly the core development team for the original has disbanded making it unlikely that we'll revisit the original Hive Jump. Releasing Hive Jump was a major moment in our history and we've learned a lot from it. We're pressing hard to make smart decisions as we move forward with the development of Hive Jump Survivors.

Whats Next? FAQ


Q: What about bug fixing on PC and Wii U? Weve got some clean up to do on PC. In our efforts to bring Hive Jump to new platforms, weve done a little clean up, overall, to the game. Weve invested time toward improving game elements such as the collision system and some basic bug fixing. There were some questions about certain achievements which weve worked to clear up and some other behind the scenes optimizations to tackle. Weve learned of a few new bugs about controller detection which weve got in the bug queue. About Re-bindable Controls, on all platforms I know its not natural to have the jump button on a shoulder button. Decades of other titles demand that we jump with a face button. I get it. But, if you put it anywhere else you cant jump, aim and shoot well. Weve tried. Its not a feature that is completely off the table, but weve not found a config that works better so we chose to prioritize other tasks. If you want to try out different configurations on PC in the meantime, tools like JoytoKey do offer that type of support. A few of you were asking about controller maps in the Steam forums so weve whipped up a few quick guides which are over at hivejump.com but are also included here:

Q: Will PC Multiplayer ever come out of BETA? Online Multiplayer is not a system that is easily perfected. It works great in some cases, but in others it suffers from desyncs and performance issues. Weve invested considerable time toward making this experience better for everyone, but issues still come up. Weve had to be a bit pragmatic in choosing ways to move Hive Jump forward and arent yet in a spot where we can take that beta tag off the Online Feature. Q: Will you be coming to PS4 next? Nothing is announced for PS4 or any other platform at this time.

Back in March we sent out a celebratory note to our Kickstarter backers that wed submitted to Nintendo of America for certification. Our review took a little longer than expected because of a few issues regarding our developer registration. However, thanks to the awesome work of some folks at Nintendo those issues got resolved quickly and we went into review in early April. Check out our Kickstarter update for more news on that progress!

ATTENTION JUMPERS! We've got a hot-fix inbound for Challenge modes which were uncompleteable! Thanks for the quick reporting of these bugs from the community. We've also fixed an issue with the volume slider not adjusting the volume of all sound effects. For complete build notes, see below!

Overshield Nerf, Ambush Fix, and other improvements!(1.00.3943)


ATTENTION JUMPERS! We've been listening to your feedback and bug reports, and have even more improvements on the way. We agree that the Overshield is too forgiving, and have adjusted the way it functions. It now has twice the health, from 50hp -> 100hp extra, but large sources of damage like spikes or explosions will now penetrate the shield and do the remaining damage to the Jumper's health. This means that spikes will now insta-kill a Jumper with an overshield, however, get a max hp+ relic or a impale resist relic in play, and a shielded player will be at about 20hp remaining if they walk into an explosive egg with an Overshield on (as an example). Let us know how this feels! Please keep the great feedback and bug reports coming on the Steam forums. Thanks for all your support, and we hope you're all having a blast!

Quality of life patch #1! (1.00.3761)


ATTENTION JUMPERS! We've got another patch coming in hot! We're please to be launching another patch today that should improve the experience of the game for all of our players. We've added some more safety code for online play that should help improve stability, but we know all the desyncs aren't gone yet! Keep playing online multiplayer and helping us find the causes of desyncs so we can fix them all! We appreciate your help and will keep at it until all issues are resolved!

  • Fixed movement glitch where player would requently pop up through ceilings.
  • Reduced difficulty on Easy and Medium difficulties.
  • Caretaker boss's body now flashes, to avoid confusion about weak-points.
  • Laughing Stalker respawn time issue fixed. Was .2 seconds, now 20 second.

More Hotfixes for Launch Bugs (1.00.3705)


ATTENTION JUMPERS! It's been hectic as a hive here at good ol' Graphite Lab as we address launch day issues. Thank you for the bug reports and feedback, please keep it coming so we can crush all bugs (of the code variety!). Here are some issues we're aware of and are working hard to fix. 1) There are some instances where your jumper can clip through ceilings up a floor, or even into the out of bounds area around the level. We should have a fix for this tomorrow or Friday. 2) Multiplayer stability and performance. First, we're putting the beta tag back on the Online Lobby button to signify that we know there are issues and are working to resolve them. The two areas we need to improve on are Desyncs and Automatic Performance Handling. At a basic level, Desyncs are caused by differences in the way players computers calculate things. We have a safety-net in place so that Desyncs don't end your runs. If a Desync happens, the backpack becomes invulnerable and when you enter a Relic Room Door or an Exit Door, the game attempts to Resync all relevant data so you can continue. Obviously this is just a safety-net, and we're working to resolve the root causes of the Desyncs. This will take more time and testing and we thank you for your patience. Multiplayer performance being slow can be caused by 2 things. 1) Slow internet connection. 2) Poor hardware performance. To help mitigate slow internet connections, bump your "Input Delay" a bit higher than the highest ping of your players in the online lobby. To help improve your hardware performance, turn off Lighting in the Settings menu. Because the game is peer-to-peer, it can only run as fast as the slowest member of an online game. We plan on improving multiplayer stability and adding systems that help automatically put settings where they should be for better performance in online play (but for now, you can take some of these steps manually.) Again, a sincere thank you and welcome to all our new players! We're looking forward to delivering an even better Hive Jump experience through updates and bug fixes.

You will need to close your Hive Jump game and allow the update to download if you were blocked by the queen progression bug in campaign.

JUMPERS! This will be our last patch before Full Launch 1/18! This patch introduced two features. Find Match Button and Recall Features. Find match is on Main Menu and will put you into any publicly hosted game quickly. The recall feature allows the player with the backpack to summon other jumpers to them at Relic Doors and the Exit Door by holding "use" input for 5 seconds. Use responsibly ;-) Here's to a great last weekend of Early Access before Launch! (Oh, and a review before launch would be very helpful, so consider doing so if you haven't already.)

We’ve been skirmishing with the Ordovicians for months now, but the time has come to defend our home worlds and push the enemy to the far reaches of the galaxy.

Attention Jumpers! Thanks for your patience as we fixed the issue with ambush rooms crashing the game. It's been a busy time with holidays cutting into regular work hours, and we're excited to say the game is in full working order again. Please enjoy this latest build, and report any bugs you find with "F1" in the game! Bug reporting doesn't work in Multiplayer though, so if there's a multiplayer related bug, leave a post on the discussion boards here and we'll look into it! Jumpers! Happy holidays! Hope you all enjoy the 25% sale we're running on Steam! ;-) We've been extremely busy this last month getting Hive Jump close to content complete, fixing many bugs both large and small, and working on the Wii U port. All this activity made it hard for us to keep up with our regular update schedule of every 2 weeks, and we apologize for the delay in this update. This update introduces new Challenge modes to the game! Joining the already available Daily and Weekly Challenges are the Speedrun and Endless challenges! The Speedrun Challenge ranks players by time instead of by score, and ensures no run-killing ambush rooms. It allows you to take your unlocked equipment into the challenge with you, and provides a random hive seed each time, making it a breeding ground for world record competition. Check out Hive Jump on Speedrun.com The Endless Challenge, while not technically endless, puts you into a 99 level hive. This provides an extremely long-form play suitable for streaming and really getting T3H URN going. 99 Levels means 198 potential relic rooms... do you see where this is going? >:-D Arcade difficulty selection! You can now select a difficulty, Easy, Medium, or Hard for hosting a hive mission. Easy = 3 Levels, Medium = 6 Levels, and Hard = 9 Levels. If you join someone else's online match, you can see what mode they are hosting at the top of the Loadout screen! We're continuing to rely on community feedback, testing, and bug reporting leading up to our full launch on 1/18/2017. Keep the reports coming using "F1" in game!

Full Launch Date Announced! (No update yet!)


JUMPERS! Thank you for all your support throughout the Early Access period of Hive Jump. We're rapidly approaching content complete status, and have an announced launch date of 1/18/2017! You can read all about our launch plans and upcoming content on Kickstarter.
We apologize for not updating the Store build in a while. We've been adding so much bug fixing and polish to aspects of core game, that the multiplayer functionality has developed some new desync issues. These issues are prevalent enough that we don't want to sacrifice the current stability of the multiplayer on the Store version for the shiny new features that are coming very soon. Give us a few more days to iron out the wrinkles with online multiplayer. You can expect a new build next week!

Jumpers! We've been hard at work squashing bugs and getting the game balanced and ready for the introduction of Campaigns and the Queen boss fight! Also, you'll see we've added a few achievements to the game, the rest are hidden until they're hooks have been added and you can actually earn them! Enjoy this first batch and more are coming soon!   • Accessing the "esc" menu in the hive actually pauses the game in non-online local games!

Jumpers! Hives are getting much more dangerous! We've fixed many AI issues and you should notice A LOT more enemies swarming you in levels. We've done our best to balance this based on # of players and equipment level, but more balancing will probably be necessary as we get player feedback. Let us know how the new balance feels!   • Extensive AI Fixes. (soldiers are much more dangerous now. watch out!)
  • Spawn rate balance tweaks (more enemies in general, but should scale per # of players)

  • DOTs will be stripped from Laughing Stalker when he blinks
  • Pinwheel grenades won't get stuck in geometry as much.

Jumpers! We've been hard at work finding ways to decrease desyncs for multiplayer games with 3-4 players. We believe we've fixed most of these on PC. Cross-player between PC / Mac / Linux will still be buggy, but that's the next target to hit after this! We've got a lot of AI improvements in the works, but they're not ready for deployment yet. They will come next week probably. That includes fliers no longer flying through thin walls, soldier pathing / moonwalking, and more. Stay tuned for those fixes later. Sorry we don't have much new content other than bug fixes. We're a small team and are working on a lot of big features at the same time. MP fixes, AI fixes, Campaign feature (big!), Story (big!), and the Wii U port. Thanks for bearing with us, and we will have much more to share with you soon!

Jumpers! We're excited to welcome Mac and Linux recruits to the J.U.M.P. Corps! These builds should unlock in the next hour or so... Mac and Linux builds will now automatically download for any Steam users who are running on those platforms. We've tested these builds internally and haven't found any major platform specific issues, however, if you find any bugs be sure to report them using "F1" in the game! Online Multiplayer is still suffering from desyncs with 3-4 players, although 2 player co-op works pretty well. We're doing a pretty major refactor for next week that could solve a majority of our desync problems, so stay tuned for more info on that front. (Also, we know that cross-platform multiplayer CAN work between PC / Mac / Linux, but this online play suffers from desyncs similarly to normal PC <-> PC play, so we need to solve those before we handle cross-platform play.) Thanks for your continued support as we march towards a full launch version! Every bit of playtesting, feedback, and bug reporting helps us make Hive Jump a better game!

Attention Jumpers!


We’re receiving a large data-burst from J.U.M.P. Corps Headquarters! The war effort is progressing swiftly, and there’s a lot of recent developments to cover. In this update:

There are a lot of irons in the fire currently, but we’re thrilled to be making a final push on content for the game! This kind of large content push means that the next few builds might have fewer new content additions, and more minor bug fixes and improvements. With a small team, this is how it has to work to get these large content pieces like Queen / Campaign / Story done! Thanks for bearing with us!

New Mac and Linux recruits inbound! (10/12)


We’re excited to be bringing the Early Access version of Hive Jump to our Mac and Linux backers! Initially we weren’t sure what platform-specific issues would arise and how long they would take to fix, however Unity3d has proven to have excellent cross-platform capabilities. We couldn’t be more thrilled with the porting capabilities of the engine.
Get ready to jump on 10/12/2016 on Mac and Linux! After conducting internal testing on Mac and Linux (Ubuntu) devices, we’re ready to release these versions into the wild. We’ll be counting on our backers and early access users to continue playtesting and reporting any issues they find with these specific platforms using the in-game “F1” reporter system.

They’re coming outta the walls!


Disturbing reports have reached J.U.M.P. Corps Headquarters! It appears as though the bugs are learning! They are setting ambushes within their hives, enclosing our fire-teams in small rooms and swarming them!
Endure and survive! Jumpers who have survived such ambushes have reported that the only path to victory is to assume a defensive position and hold out until an escape route opens up! J.U.M.P. Corps HQ recommends the use of smart turrets and healing fields to increase your odds of survival!

Squad goals: Online Multiplayer improvements!


Online Multiplayer is in the game in a beta form. Creating an initial implementation of the feature was a lot of work, and perfecting it and removing all the bugs will continue to require a lot of testing, tweaking, and programming! As it currently stands, 2 players can play reliably, but adding a 3rd or 4th increases the chances of a desync occurring (essentially ending the run). We’re continuing to release patches with tweaks to the multiplayer system to remove these desyncs and hope to have fully stable online multiplayer soon. A big thank you to our Community QA group that is helping us nail down this slippery feature! If you are interested in helping too, join our Discord community and ask about CQA!

Big momma bug: Hive Queen W.I.P.


Accurate reports of Hive Queen activity are still few and far between. However, progress on uncovering the hiding places and secrets of these queen bugs is rapid. Soon we will know more about our ultimate enemies, and we will be able to send these bugs back to the dark corners of the galaxy that they came from!

Meet the crew: Story NPCs (Part 1)


We’re excited to begin introducing you all to the characters who will be leading the counter-offensive against the Ordovician alien menace! In Hive Jump’s Campaign mode, you will be assuming the role of a J.U.M.P. Corps commander and working with these characters to rid planets of alien infestations and make the galaxy safe for humanity again. Part one of this series teases three of our six main characters.
(Left to right, Delphi, Col. Keller, Cpt. Hirose) Col. Keller is a highly decorated member of the J.U.M.P. Corps who is currently in charge of coordinating the training of new recruits. The Ordovician War has resulted in a large human death toll, but Keller remains unfazed and insists that, “I’ve fought Xanaduvian Sabrecats with ten times the ferocity of these little buggers.” You can read her full biography in the Codex screen in the Steam Early Access build now! Cpt. Hirose rose quickly through the ranks of the H.S.A. Navy as an exceptional fighter pilot and squadron leader. After attending officer’s school and serving as first mate aboard other H.S.A. vessels, Hirose was made Captain of the H.S.S. Dauntless. Hirose and her crew are regularly sent to the most pivotal battlegrounds in order to turn the tide in humanity’s favor. Col. Keller and the other main characters are stationed aboard the H.S.S. Dauntless with Hirose, carrying out high-profile missions for the H.S.A. Delphi is a member of the H.S.A.’s PsyOps division, and humanity’s secret weapon in the Ordovician War. Created in a test-tube using a genetic engineering process that simulates generations upon generations of human evolution, Delphi possesses far stronger psychic potential than other humans in the 24th century. In order to prevent these genetic traits from being passed to the general human population, Delphi was grown without a reproductive system. Delphi’s psychic abilities will prove essential in locating and destroying Ordovician Queens, but are so dangerous that Delphi is considered a living weapon and is constantly under H.S.A. supervision. Delphi often wonders what future awaits them if humanity survives the Ordovician War… That’s all for now! Stay tuned for Part 2 of our story character introductions! A little taste of what’s to come… a nearly-omniscient Oracular AI, a brilliant scientist and archaeologist with a flair for the eccentric, and a loyal and valorous Runabout (robotic) construct.

Jumpers! We've fixed up the issues with Ambush encounters, and are excited to hear what you think of them! There's now a 40% chance that instead of fighting a boss, you will have an Ambush encounter and have to survive for 2 minutes before escaping! Good luck! Furthermore, we've continued improving multiplayer by fixing some bugs with the Loadout/Lobby. You can now start and stop searching for open matches, and switching between online and offline mode no longer breaks the scene. Jumpers! The bugs are getting smarter, and they're creating ambush rooms in their hives to trap your fireteam in! If you get ambushed, you'll have to hold out for a few minutes and defeat the incoming swarms. After two minutes, find the escape door, and continue on your mission. Good luck! In other news, the online multiplayer aspect of the game is getting more stable everyday! We've eliminated issues with the game desyncing immediately on level loading! Jumpers! We're continuing to add content to the game, fix bugs, and work on stabilizing multiplayer. Expect this update to roll out momentarily! Something we're working on, but haven't been able to properly fix yes, is immediate desyncs with large player groups (3-4). For BEST CURRENT PERFORMANCE, make sure to set Input Lag to at least 100ms. This should reduce those desyncs, at the expense of some input responsiveness. We're working on a full fix for that.

Jumpers! Our previous build introduced an issue that could cause the normal progression of the game to fail when trying to access Arcade mode after visiting the Settings or Codex Scenes. This has been fixed, along with a number of other small improvements detailed below!

  • Lurkers more responsive. Lookout!
  • Fix for level flashing bright on mission fail during dark level.
  • Poison grenades now detonate on impact, making them more useful!
  • Eliminated duplicate sounds on Scorcher Boss diving into/out of lava.
  • The game won't minimize if you click outside it
  • The mouse will now be confined to the game window
  • Returning to MainMenu from Options/Codex is now faster

New Enemy Type: Lurker (v0.46.2108)

Introducing: The Lurker!


Jumpers! We at JUMP Corps H.Q. have disturbing news. A new species of alien has been discovered in the hives! These dangerous bugs are reminiscent of trap door spiders, and the troops have taken to calling them Lurkers. These aliens lay patiently in wait for their prey, well concealed in hive rock, and pounce out with piercing mandibles when their prey lingers close by. The lurker’s mandibles are capable of easily cutting through Jumper armor and will instantly sever a human or robotic spine. Lurkers burrow into hive rock and lay in wait, making targeting and destruction of a lurker difficult. Jumpers should keep an eye out for their protruding mandibles, and use explosive weapons and grenades to deal damage to them while they remain burrowed. Avoidance is also a valid tactical option, although it’s best to give your fellow jumpers a heads up that a lurker is nearby.

  • Rejuvenation Field now blocks projectiles but has longer cooldowns
  • Added light-casting plants to Mushroom Env.
  • Added lights to shooting Bombardiers

Multiplayer Stability Mini-Patch (v0.45.2056)

Progress slow but steady with Online MP stability


Jumpers! Thank you for helping us test the online multiplayer feature! We are aware of issues related to desyncs and some lobby crashes and input freezes. We are working hard to resolve these, but progress is slow. Sometimes we fix one aspect, but that solution causes something else to break. We had hoped to include more fixes in this patch for the weekend, but what we have included should help with stability somewhat. Keep testing and let us know how it goes! Submit bug reports from in-game with "F1". Thanks again for your support!

Patch Notes for Version 0.45.2056


  • Fixed an issue with desyncing in multiplayer when players used the Chat window while transitioning levels or moving their jumpers in the air.
  • PS4 controller input issues fixed.
  • Fixes for Daily and Weekly Challenges being non-uniform for all players.
  • Other minor fixes
Our immediate focus for production will be solidifying the online multiplayer experience for the majority of our players. This includes:
  • Loading screens for the transition from Loadout scene to Hive gameplay.
  • Reducing lobby bugs.
  • Adding low-end hardware performance settings (this will help multiplayer FPS for all players connected to a low-end machine).
  • Finding and fixing any other causes of desyncing.
After we achieve these goals, we will be able to focus on bringing the game to our other promised platforms, such as Mac and Linux, with cross-platform multiplayer (most likely), and then also adding content such as new aliens, campaign, queen fight, story, and more. We'll also be sprinkling in nice-to-have features such as rebind-able controls and other options. Online Stability Update Coming Soon!

Jumpers! We spent all day reproducing bugs with online multiplayer and have identified a few major ones for fixing. A few notes. To reduce desyncs right now, avoid using the Chat window while levels are loading, or while your jumper is moving, particularly in the air / jumping / falling. We will be fixing these hopefully in time to apply a patch tomorrow, but in the meantime you can avoid those actions for better stability. We have also identified issues with lobby games not starting correctly for some players, leading to black-screens. These should hopefully be fixed for tomorrow's patch as well. Thanks for your patience as we fix these bugs. Thanks for your support in our Early Access endeavors! Together we will make Hive Jump the best game it can possibly be! <3 the dev team.

    Online Leaderboards! Let the battle commence! Daily and Weekly challenge scores will now populate in the online leaderboard. Sort between friends scores, top scores and even your rank among the world! FPS lock was lifted for single player, allowing you play with faster frame rates on monitors with higher refresh rates! Please note: Multiplayer still will require a 30FPS lock for synchronization purposes. Other Fixes

  • Production Update 7/29 - No New Build this Week

    JUMPERS! Thanks for all the awesome bug reporting you all have been doing. We're logging and prioritizing all of them, and have already fixed several. Unfortunately there will not be an updated build today. We want to bring you weekly content updates and bug fixes, but our highest priority right now is bringing you all Online Multiplayer as soon as possible. We've been working hard on that, and are making great strides. The features should be ready soon, but we're still dealing with some interface issues and pesky desyncs. Here are a few things we've been working on other than Online Multiplayer that you will be glad to know are fixed or added to the game. (Remember, no new build yet, but soon!) Upcoming fixes coming soon!

    • More buttons clickable with mouse on STORE UI

    • Dying while paused will no longer cause player to lose control of their Jumper.
    • Pause menu buttons are now clickable in loadout screen.
    • Fixed some Jumper torso animations while jumping.
    • Added a back button to the play sub-menu on the title screen.
    • Added "Coming Soon" tags to various menu options.
    • Added some more instructions to certain items that use other keys to activate (such as Remote Detonator).
    • Fixed visibility issues with dialogue advancing prompts not appearing on certain resolutions.
    • Adjusted certain loadout item tooltips for clarity.
    • Fixed some NPC dialogue typos and item spawns.
    • Fixed some instances of the Backpack appearing on the front of the Jumpers.

    New Boss! What to Expect from Early Access!

    A new BOSS!

    Caretaker Boss Preview


    Incoming transmission from the H.S.A… The footage you’re about to see is highly classified. A reconnaissance jump team has identified a new elite Ordovician lifeform. The troopers are calling it “The Caretaker.”
    This large crab-like alien moves slowly and methodically over icy terrain and harvests water in the form of ice. The caretaker's limbs cause protrusions from the far walls of the hives, giving our teams close platforms for direct assault.
    Its weak spot can change so Jumpers must change their formation to do the most damage to this massive Ordovician.

    WHAT TO EXPECT FOR EARLY ACCESS: DAY ONE


    Hive Jump for Early Access focuses on an awesome Arcade experience: action packed run-and-gun gameplay inspired by classics like contra with rouglike touches inspired by industry staples like Spelunky. You will assume the role of a JUMPER – a soldier bred for the sole purpose of jumping into alien hives to exterminate the viscous hordes who have overtaken these far away planets. You will customize your JUMPER color (9 total), icon (40 total) and even select from available jumper skins (4 total!
    The levels or “Hives” of Hive Jump are all procedurally generated – meaning each new mission will be a fresh challenge for you. Each Hive has 4 different regions which you will face including the Crystal Caverns and Mushroom Forests as well as Volcanic and Ice themed locations. Each of these regions is fiercely guarded by a major “boss” alien which the player must defeat to progress.
    Earn bonus buffs that improve your "run"! Throughout the mission the player will come across special areas of the hive called “Relic Rooms” which are predesigned challenge rooms that yield player-boosting relics when completed. Players may collect a relic which increases their movement speed, or adds additional armor to their character among other buffs. These items can be discovered throughout the Hive so the player must explore and discover these treasures to give the best chance for survival!
    Meet and rescue NPCs to earn valuable resources! As you work through Relic Rooms be on the look-out for NPCs who share lore and also resources such as goo, grenades and health! You never know, some may even be visiting from other amazing indie titles!
    You will be able to unlock and upgrade 11 different weapons! Pulverize aliens with pulse rifles, flamethrowers, gamma rays and more – each with 3 upgrade levels that will supply greater function and power!
    Unlock and Equip from a collection of 9 GRENADES to deliver maximum damage to the alien menace. Grenade types include sticky casing, trip wires, and even cluster bombs which do damage to a wider area.
    Unlock and equip from 8 UTILITY items to support your mission! These Utility items range from protective shields and teleportation tools to healing items which can all mean the difference between success and a gruesome failure.
    The Early Access release will feature three different game modes as well. Players can play an ARCADE mode which drops 1-4 players (local, with online play coming soon - more details listed above in case you missed it) into an alien hive comprised from 3 of the 4 environments. Our fastest runs through this mode have lasted between 30 and 40 minutes making it a perfect “jump in and play” experience! We’ve also added Daily and Weekly Challenges which will load a pre-determined level each day or week, respectively. This will give the “speed run” player something they can practice and improve upon, in order to post scores and times on our leaderboards (which are coming soon, but won’t be available day one). This is all set to a great soundtrack from Big Giant Circles (Mass Effect 2, Borderlands 2) with sound design from FatBard (Crashlands)! We've worked our tails off to ensure full controller support, so enjoy that twin-stick excellence as you roast enemies with the comfort of a controller!

    A note about STEAM Online Multiplayer:


    This one is coming down to the wire. We're confidant we have the right people for the job and that we will have you jumping Hives online with Steam matchmaking soon, but as of today this feature is not complete. Users can access an online lobby, and can search for their friends. They can invite and accept, as well as kick friends from the lobby. Host can start the match and can use chat functions to communicate with their team. Once in a match, however, dis-synchronization of data causes the game to become unplayable. The factors that contribute to this are systems such as the physics system (which we've fixed), but also many others such as random events that can show up in a hive, and also our complex AI (all of which, we are working to fix as quickly as possible). Any game developer will tell you that networked multiplayer is among the most taxing and time-consuming challenges to add to a game. It’s been our biggest stress with the entire production. We are still devoted to this feature and rest assured we will have it up and running asap, keeping you informed every step of the way.

    New Jumper Skin!

    Behold: The Rail Gun!



    The Rail Gun is a skillshot weapon. It has a slower rate of fire but is 100% accurate and the blast is lightning-quick to meet its target. The beam-like nature of the weapon allows it to pass through enemies damaging all foes in a direct line of fire. We'll be sharing more next week as we get closer to release.

    Sonar Utility



    The Sonar Utility is a great addition to any Jump Corp arsenal. Activate it to release a sonar ping in the hive. This will reveal "offscreen indicators" for the locations of any relic entrance doors, level exit doors, or loot crates hidden among the hives. We'll be sharing more next week as we get closer to release.

    New Rescues located!



    We've got a new batch of NPCs to reveal this week! As you explore the various regions of the hive, your jump squad may encounter NPCs who have been long lost as they await rescue.     Mysterious Mushroom - Hive mushrooms serve as a food source for Ordovician aliens. However, this one emits a strange type of radiation. Could mysterious mushrooms such as this one contribute to the unique bioelectric physiology of the bugs? The H.S.A. has begun studying these unique mushrooms and has revealed a slightly regenerative field emanating from them. Necronomicon Ex Mortis - A strange and disquieting book that appears to contain the blood scribed writings of a mad man. Superstitious and unscientific civilizations of the past used to give such grimoires great awe and reverence, but it is doubtful that any of the gibberish written within will aid in the war effort. We've loved getting to collaborate with each of you as we craft the story and lore behind your characters as well as the visual style and animations too! We've posted three of the NPCs you'll find in the game and will share more with each upcoming update!

    New Relics located within the Hive...



    Rabbit Ears - This oddly shaped relic appears to be antennae for receiving wireless signals. Before the advent of quantum-entanglement based communications, various wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum were manipulated in order to transmit data. Inexplicably, exposure to the bio-electric fields within the hive has caused these antennae to cut through atmospheric disturbance and decrease the time for reinforcements to arrive in the hive. Valorous Shield - A makeshift shield reminiscent of those wielded by knights in the days of antiquity. This shield was assembled in great haste by a Tech Officer named Tien from scraps of armor collected from fallen Jumpers after an Ordovician ambush. Tien fought his way out of the hive using nothing but this shield and a handful of scavenged grenades. Tech Officer Tien was awarded a medal for Valorous conduct in delivering data critical to the war effort against all odds. The tools of war may change, but the spirit of valor within human beings remains the same as in the days of the knightly orders of the past.This shield serves as a symbol of valor and protection of human life. Relic rooms appear randomly with in the hives so a smart jump team will take time to search them out. We've been revealing new relics with each update and we've got two more for you - these were both designed in collaboration with our backers!

    More Level Modules, Hazards, and Content!



    We continue to crank out new level modules and relic rooms to populate the hives with variety and fun! The system allows our lead designer Matt Donatelli (@mattdonatelli) to work quickly and test quickly too! The source is tile based, but we can then see the rendered version too - which looks pretty swanky!
    These ice caverns are especially treacherous as there are lots of razor sharp crystals that can harm even the most careful of jumpers! Check out some animations from our resident pixel-wizard Ben Severs (follow @bsevers18)!

    Hive Jump and Indy Pop Con!


    What can we say about our visit to Indy Pop Con last weekend? It was truly amazing, flattering, and encouraging! Hive Jump EP Matt Raithel (@raitheoshow) and Lead Designer Matt Donatelli (@mattdonatelli) made a road trip to Indianapolis to share the new Lava Environment and Scorcher boss with over 35,000 fans at the con. Little did we know that we would end the weekend with not one, but two rewards for Hive Jump!
    Oh, yeah, we were also shocked to be brought up on stage and given the grand prize as well! That's designer Matt Donatelli accepting the Skateboard Trophy and a few clams to help get us over the finish line as well!

    We're getting closer to our STEAM EARLY ACCESS DATE (JULY 20!!!) So the updates are going to come a bit more frequently and be a bit lighter. Here's what you have to look forward to in this update:

    New Levels, New Modules, New Hazards, Oh My!



    One of the game features we've been very proud of since the beginning is our procedural level generation system and level builder tool. This system allows us to build out all of the different stitch-able pieces that make up a playable hive. We've been working to build more variety into each of our core environments and that means lots and lots of level design for our lead designer Matt Donatelli (@mattdonatelli)! We're very excited to jump into these hives with you on July 20th!

    New Relics located within the Hive...



    Harvester Tail - The tail of a Harvester is heavily armored but has a nub at the end that is soft, pink, and bulbous. This nub is a sensitive weak spot and has a sphincter that opens up to excrete waste and other substances within the Harvester’s body at extreme velocities. These excretions are often covered with the Harvester’s extremely acidic stomach bile. By studying collected Harvester tails, the H.S.A. is developing protective coatings for Jumper armor that resist the extreme acidity of hazards within Ordovician hives. Jar of Spores - This jar full of hive mushroom spores seems to be the result of experiments by an amateur scientist. The seal on the jar is intact, and the spores within are contained effectively. H.S.A. research has shown that prolonged exposure to non-fatal levels of spores seem to have negative effects on human mental health. In heavy concentrations these spores will cause death by asphyxiation. H.S.A. scientists are hard at work developing filters for Jumper suits and every sample helps.

    FAQ Update!


    Thanks to everyone who has been mailing,tweeting and messaging questions! We've tried to get answers back to you asap. Here are a few of the most frequently asked questions posed to us since the last update. (Don't forget you can check out and post on the new steam community hub too!) Steam only shows support for PC, what about Mac and Linux? Right now we’re only launching Early Access with a PC build, but we will be staggering Mac and Linux releases throughout the Early Access period in order to address any platform-specific concerns. We anticipate that all platforms will be ready for the final launch at the same time, and that there will be cross-platform multiplayer (although this has yet to be tested and verified). I may not play a lot of multi-player. Would you say Hive Jump is still enjoyable as a single-player experience? Most definitely! We've made great strides in developing the single player experience! In addition to normal difficulty scaling features like health / enemy quantity scaling, we’ve also solved other balance issues for one player. For instance, in single-player mode the backpack enters a hover-mode when the player dies, allowing them to re-position the backpack to avoid hazards or enemy fire while waiting to re-spawn. This solved a big issue with player-agency we were having in single-player mode. We're confident single player will be a good experience, and can only get better with the feedback of players who are participating in our Daily "Lone Wolf" Challenges. Have more questions?
