Halloween upgrade!

It's Halloween in a few days, and for the occasion, the first upgrade for Litte Brats! is already available! On the program? A seasonal theme, a 1 vs 1 split-screen mode, and more! [previewyoutube=crgCU4DTqzU;full][/previewyoutube] An autumnal look Of course, the most visible feature is the introduction of seasonal scenery: for the duration of autumn (in the northern hemisphere, as the game's school is in France), playtime will take place in pastel-orange hues, with its deluge of dead leaves. Other seasonal themes will be added in future upgrades. For a few days, Halloween decorations will also be available: skeletons, bats, cobwebs... A few new skins elements have also been added to character creation. These elements will remain available afterwards, even if some are thematically linked to Halloween. 1 vs 1 mode This is a mode I'd planned to include from the very start, but which was absent from V1 due to lack of time... I've since been asked for it again, and it's now integrated into the game: the 1 vs 1 split-screen mode. This means you can now play with two people behind the same computer, sharing the keyboard or using controllers (or a controller and keyboard, etc.). New items Three new items have been added to the list of games your little brats can play:

  • the seesaw: just like the merry-go-round, this is a game that earns you more points if you play it with someone else! So you'll have to put aside fighting with your comrades (at least temporarily).
  • the bubble wand: for this one, I must confess to one thing... it's not really a novelty. In fact, this object was in the game code from the start (it even appeared in the trailer), but due to a bug, it was never instantiated during gameplay! This has now been corrected, and you can now enjoy this pretty bubble wand...
  • the cuddly toy: a rather special toy, as it will give you permanent fun points, even if you don't use it... and it won't prevent you from running, unlike the other items. On the other hand, the fun you get out of it is relatively low...
Other small additions A few bugs have been fixed, and several improvements have been made: a game creation menu has been added to unclutter the home screen; using the joystick in menus has been facilitated by better displays of active buttons. The key change menu has also been fixed with the joystick (in V1, there were unwanted line breaks). Happy Halloween and enjoy the game! I hope you enjoy this first upgrade... see you in a few weeks for the next one, in which I'll certainly ask you what you'd like to see. As I've said many times before, this is just the beginning! Happy Halloween and happy gaming!

Little Brats! is released!

After a two-week delay, the game was finally released yesterday! Thanks to all those who have already bought it. It's been a lot of work, and I'm very proud of this new release. The work began just 8 months ago, and required some 400 hours of development, 70 hours of graphics, 38 hours of music, 13 hours of writing, as well as a few more hours for communication, administration, and so on. A huge thank you to all those who took part in testing this clearly multiplayer-oriented game: Frdric Reith, Antoine Lam, Lucas and Jolan, Jean-Pierre Pagat-Vergne, Monalisa Hannot, Jrmy Tardat, Booteille, Marien, Martin, Fla, Pouhiou and Squeeek.

Follow me!

I've created several accounts dedicated to communication around the game (my usual social media accounts being restricted to a French-speaking audience). I'll be posting gameplay videos, artworks, technical points, making-ofs and so on. You can now follow all this on the platform of your choice (in this order of preference):

The future

I've already said it, but I'll say it again: this release is just the beginning of the adventure. I've got a huge todo list of new content to add, new toys, new game modes, new scenery, new music, and so on. There will be regular updates (and free/included, no paid DLC), at least throughout the coming year. So stay tuned for new updates by following the social media listed above! See you soon for new adventures!

Release date postponed to October 1

It is with some sadness that I have to inform you that the release date of Little Brats! has been postponed by two weeks: the game will therefore be released on October 1 instead of September 18 as previously announced. The reason is simple: the latest beta tests have brought to my attention a number of bugs that indicate a noticeable instability in the game's netcode (the part that manages network communication for multiplayer). I estimate that consolidating this netcode will require a significant amount of work, and I don't think it's wise to continue planning for the release in 2 weeks (!) with this uncertainty about the quality of multiplayer. Considering that there are also other things I'd like to add before the release... Anyway, sorry for the delay. Of course, the main purpose of this delay is to offer you a great multiplayer experience, with the goal of producing a game of the highest possible quality. Better a good game late than a buggy game on time... Thanks for your patience!

The Little Brats! avatar generator

In anticipation of the game's release in September, you can already generate your own little brat with the "Little Brats!" avatar generator.
This generator partially reproduces the character customization menu taken directly from the game: it's based on the same engine, Godot, and uses the same images. The only customization options missing from this version are pants, shoes and voice (for obvious reasons). Have fun and feel free to use the produced avatars for your social media accounts, they're obviously made for it :)

Little Brats!, scheduled for September 18, 2024

This time it's official: Little Brats! will be released on September 18. Makes sense to release a playground simulator during the back-to-school month! For the occasion, the official trailer has been unveiled! [previewyoutube=oUluRvQJqxo;full][/previewyoutube]

What is this game?

If, graphically, my style already used in the point and click Superfluous Returnz is used once again, the type of game will be radically different: Little Brats! will be a fast-paced action game, mainly aimed at multiplayer (although it will also be playable solo).
You'll be controlling your brat through a school playground. Your goal? To have as much fun as possible. To do this, you'll have at your disposal both fixed games (swings, turnstiles, etc.) and portable toys (yo-yos, skipping ropes, etc.). The catch, of course, is that since there are only a few of these, you'll have to battle it out with the other brats... slapping while avoiding being slapped, keeping your toys as long as possible, stealing those of others while not getting caught by the teacher... playtime is gonna be no picnic.

How do you play?

The game will be available on Windows/macOS/Linux. Ports to Android and Nintendo Switch are under consideration. It can be played using a keyboard (optionally with a mouse) or a gamepad. Multiplayer will be online or in LAN. I may implement a split-screen version later. The game is relatively casual, with a fast learning curve and a reduced number of buttons to use: direction buttons (or the stick on a controller), an action button, a secondary action button, and a sprint button, and that's it. Each game lasts a few minutes, just long enough for recess. At the end of the game, the bell will ring and you'll have to line up in pairs to return to class. You'll then be presented with a podium and a scoreboard, with titles awarded according to whether you've been particularly nice, nasty, etc.
In addition to the people playing with you, the other brats will be directed by the computer, with randomly drawn names and skins: note that the names are those most given in 2018 (hence the Jackson, Isabelle, etc.). The game takes place in 2024, with children aged around 6...

Come as you are

Particular attention has been paid to the customization of your brat: you can select their appearance, from their outfit to their hairstyle and their skin color. There is deliberately no selection of the gender of your little brat: when drawing, I usually associate face shape 1 (the one with the big nose) with boys/men and shape 2 (round with a pointed nose) with girls/women, but you're free to choose the look that suits you.
Other variants will undoubtedly be added in future updates.

Collect cards

A parody of Pokmon is included: some fifty little creatures can be collected in the form of cards, which will be scattered by the bots during gameplay. They will obviously be more or less rare, and will also bring you more or less fun.
For the time being, they're mainly designed as a humorous addition, and don't have their own use in the game, but I'm thinking about developing mechanics around them (exchanges, etc.). The difficulty will be to integrate them without breaking the fast pace of the game. Just wait and see. I can't hide the fact that I can't wait for you to discover them, because I've included a lot of silly things that I'm proud of :D

An evolving game

Unlike Superfluous Returnz, which was an adventure with a beginning and an end, Little Brats! will be enriched with content over the coming months. Please note that this will not be paid DLC, but updates included with the purchase of the game. As I said above, other skin variants will be added as updates come in, but not only: I'm also planning to add new fixed games, portable toys and a whole lot of other stuff. I'm also thinking about adding other game modes (goal list game, team game, protect the leader game, etc.) and mini-games (small soccer field, etc.). We'll see, and I'll keep you posted and certainly ask for your opinions on what comes next.

See you soon

See you in September for the game's release. Until then, I've got a busy schedule ahead of me to finish V1 of this game which, let me tell you, I'm already having a lot of fun with! I hope you have a great summer, and I'll see you soon...

  • A playground simulator

The school bell has just rung, and the children have worked well. And for just a few minutes, the playground belongs to them. One goal: to have as much fun as possible!

Swings, merry-go-rounds, balloons, yo-yos, boost your fun score any way you can. There's just one problem: these little kids are real brats... and won't hesitate to slap each other on the back and steal each other's toys.

But beware: the teacher is on the lookout, and she's not easy-going. You don't want to get caught being a little brat in front of her!

    Features

    • Immerse yourself in a colorful universe in the style of a 2D cartoon
    • Customize your brat from head to toe
    • Compete against your friends in a joyful mess to the sound of hard rock, online or in LAN
    • Play with toys and try not to get them stolen, or prefer equipment such as swings
    • Collect the Sillymon cards scattered by your classmates
    • Win titles by being the nicest, the meanest, the laziest, the most hyperactive... or the one who hides the most behind the teacher!
    • Above all, collect as much fun as you can to win the game!
