The Patient is a small indie atmospheric horror puzzle experience loosely made in the style of an older PS1 horror aesthetic. Take on the role of an unsuspecting doctor forced to work nightshift to find and euthanize an infected patient housed within the basement of the institution.
You play as Dr. Ellen Reed, and you are a certified therapist and psychiatric nurse at Bliss Park Medical in the outer suburbs of Bliss Park, Illinois. Today's date is October 3rd, 1998. You've been out on maternity leave for a while, and tonight is your first day back to work. A bit of a surprise, but you were immediately scheduled to work an overnight shift by your supervisor Dr. Evander Walsh. The last few days have been heavy storms in the area, resulting in the entire hospital suffering a power outage late in the evening. The hospital has been in the process of transitioning their records from paper to electronic, though this technology of keeping records on computers is still in its infancy. Due to this, most of the medical records were lost during the power outage. Luckily your supervisor Dr. Walsh is fairly tech savvy, so he was able to recover some data. He also has left you some reading to help you during the night, so check the computer as soon as you start your shift. Normally your day shifts involve you working with your patients on the ground floor, and Blocks 1 and 2. However just recently, one of your patients was dosed with a deadly experimental drug by mistake. Per Dr. Walsh's instructions he left you on your computer, you need to figure out exactly which patient was dosed with the deadly medication and have them... taken care of... as soon as you can. Since the digital records were lost, the only way you may find out who was dosed is to access the file room by your office. Unfortunately the power outage caused most of the hospital's electronic security to engage, so you will have to find a way to get into the file room. Your supervisor has clued you in on a possible way to do so...
The amount of time this drug has been inside the patient has made it so there's not much time left before we see what horrible effects it may bring, so you have to do this with haste. All ten of your quarantined patients are currently residing in Block 3, which is the lowest floor of the hospital. When you are down there, try to make sure the patients' lights remain OFF throughout the night. You don't want to risk aggravating the infected patient with any light sensitivity. You'll know if a light is on when the red light above their door is also on. Once you figure out which patient it is, you will need to disengage the cell door's lock within the Electrical Room. After you do that... the admitting surgeon will come down to Block 3 and handle the rest from there.
Explore the psychiatrics section of the hospital which houses your 10 inpatients you need to keep an eye on through out the night. Throughout the night you must keep their cell lights off, as the recent power outage is causing them to randomly flicker back on. You have a limited amount of time to find out which patient was infected with a deadly experimental drug. The only clue you'll find is within the file room, but you need to find a way to unlock the door. Use the disk writer in the basement to write your backup patient logs to a floppy disk and copy them to your office computer. Use the computer in your office to view logs and check for any corruption or anomalies that may help you find a way to unlock the file room door. As you are monitoring your patients, you will notice they each have names written on clipboards outside their doors, which will be valuable information once you have access to the patients' folders in the file room. Once you've identified the afflicted patient, pull them from within the electrical room control panel to hopefully end the nightmare.
