Demo hotfix 1.1.1

Fixed softlock in dialogue level if certain settings data from previous game version was present

Gameplay patch 1.1.0

This patch brings significant changes to the demo with heavily modified levels and new challenges. Due to issues with gamepad, official support for this input method has been removed. It can be re-enabled in controls settings, but is disabled by default. I'll be looking at fixing and polishing gamepad controls in the future, but it's not currently a priority. Changelog: - official gamepad support has been removed - official layout for Steam Deck has been added - night levels have been significantly redesigned with bigger maps and fancier visuals - crystal levels offer more interesting puzzles - levels have different shapes now - more visual variety - level 5 from previous version has been removed - bugfixes and other small changes

Demo 1.0.0 release and an outlook for the future

Hello ratheads

Inconceivable Rat Endeavour Demo version 1.0.0 has just been released. With that in mind, I'd like to tell you a little bit about the direction I'll be taking with the game and what's planned for the full version.

What's coming

The plan for full release involves a few significant changes to the game. Current (very rough) estimation is that the total game scope would end up being around 6-8h+ of gameplay, but it can obviously change and is highly dependent on how fast you solve puzzles These are the aspects I'm mainly focusing on, starting from the most important:

1. More unconventional levels and weird incorporation of core mechanics.

Demo is a bit too short to fully express it, but the main idea for the game is using the hex grid puzzle mechanics in weird contexts and different game genres. Think about it as if a standard puzzler was modded heavily and expanded outside of the intended genre. You may have seen someone making tower defence mod for Baba is You or maybe you know of weird rules from r/anarchychess. That's the kind of spirit we're going for here. To be more precise, here are some things that are already done, in the making, or on the roadmap:
  • huge rpg level (waay bigger map than standard 7-hex wide grid) with combat, items, character stats like STR, VIT, DEX, etc.
  • heavy text based adventure
  • rhythm game-based levels where you need to rotate hexes to the beat
  • survival levels (kinda like night ones with alligators)
  • farming game where you buy seeds from the shopkeepr, plant and water them, feed cows and milk them to make cheese (?)

2. Way more levels with current and more standard mechanics.

A lot of standard puzzle levels will also be included. A handful of them will use mechanics seen in the demo, but additional ones are planned too:
  • pistons/rotating arms activated with buttons
  • magnets that can't be moved when placed on the manholes
  • chaining of multiple pipes to form a passages
  • gem-activated doors and chests
  • probably a few more

3. Meta-level progression.

I'm planning to add some meaning to the cheese you collect in the levels or include some collectibles at the end of optional level branches. I'm considering selectable skins for the rat, cheese and/or items unlocking doors/passages and access to other levels.

4. UI revamp.

Current UI is usable, but I'm planning some revamp to make it prettier.

You are a rat

Smell trash, play with flies and eat cheese. Roleplay as the infamous generic rat and take on a huge journey through your home sewers with substantially wacky encounters, weird puzzles and extremely subtle, often unfunny jokes.

Solve puzzles

You have only one type of move - rotating the 6 hexes around the tile you click on. Use it to overcome a variety of challenges, avoid traps and slay your enemies. The game features quite a big set of mechanics:

  • deadly enemies

  • different weapons and items to use

  • mechanical contraptions

  • pipes that you can squeeze through

  • money and shops

  • ... and many, many more

Genre-bending

Inconceivable Rat Endeavour is mainly a puzzle game. However, it borrows handsomely from other genres and sprinkles it on top of the core mechanics, achieving unique, unconventional and silly gameplay. Match-3, rhythm games, farming sim, or even a full-blown text adventure..? The game takes you on an endeavour, where you'll constantly see new things and travel forward.

Travel the sewers

Visit 3 sewer-stylized, pixelart-esque biomes as you progress. Complete plethora of hand-crafted levels arranged into a linear campaign - a continuous adventure. Dive deeper into new mechanics with level branches that present harder challenges puzzle-wise.

Find legendary infinite cheese

Eat cheese, smell cheese, gamble cheese, harvest cheese, sell and buy cheese... Do what it takes to finish your quest and find infinite cheese that the legends foretold (just a regular cheese, but very big)

...well, you're a rat, what more would you ask for?

Game Features

  • at least one rat

  • exactly 23 types of cheese

  • it's literally a game about a rat
