Combat Overhaul

Combat Overhaul v1.61

What\'s changed and why?

End\'s Reach has always had very simple combat. The original vision for the game was something along the lines of Skyward Sword, where you were closely watching changes in the enemy\'s behaviour to determine what to do next.

The combat in the released version is very casual, and although some of those ideas were used they were mostly discarded to keep the game playing smoothly.

This update mostly focuses on improving combat to add a slightly higher difficulty, and some crunchier effects so that it\'s more enjoyable to smash things.

New Stagger / Defence System

Enemies now have a defense value. This prevents enemies from being permanently stunlocked off the first hit, something that trivialized all of the combat in the initial release. As you do combos to enemies, you will reduce their defense.

When an enemy\'s defenses are broken, they can be stunlocked and staggered as normal, but if you stop doing attacks, they will recover. This means you have to pick and choose which target to focus on while the others approach you, and you can\'t rely on area of effect damage to stunlock everything all at once.

Enemies also now have access to a universal \'Warp Strike\' attack. They will glow purple before swinging, and are completely immune to staggering with maximum defense during the attack. They will also take reduced damage and deal additional damage. It\'s best to completely avoid an enemy that is charging up a Warp Strike.

This doesn\'t make combat extremely difficult, but it should add a bit of tactical decision making when you are confronted with multiple enemies.

Sound Effects and Audio Updates

The game has also received new sounds effects in combat to make things sound a bit crunchier and more sci-fi. It\'s not a huge change but enemies should also now have more variety in the sounds they make when hit.

Lots of things were missing sound effects that should have had them, things like doors, breakable rocks, wooden planks, etc. They now all have new sound effects and graphics to make the world feel a bit more reactive.

Bugfixes

  • Rotating the minimap in the map screen menu is a more reliable now

    [/*]
  • There was a bug where sometimes the minimap would rotate off axis, this should be fixed now

    [/*]
  • Fixed a bug where you sometimes couldn\'t delete save files on PC (The bind should be holding E now to delete)

    [/*]
  • Major objectives that were missing sound effects should now have them (opening doors with keys, etc).

    [/*]
  • Hitboxes adjusted for a few attacks on enemies

    [/*]
  • Animations adjusted for enemies that were playing the wrong ones.

    [/*]
  • Character controller fix for dash bug that was really rare

    [/*]

The Future of End\'s Reach

I can\'t say for sure if this is the final update or not for End\'s Reach. It has received many more post-launch patches than I planned since it originally came out in 2023, but I\'m pretty happy with the game. One of the main areas I would like to address at some point is the unsatisfying magic system, but I\'m not ready to take on a challenge like that yet.

I am currently working on another game and every few weeks I return here to see if there\'s anything I can update to make the game a better experience.

End\'s Reach is not selling very well here on Steam, I have to be honest. The original Atari VCS release was quite a bit more successful, but I understand that in the big sea of daily releases on Steam and Steamdeck it\'s easy to miss something you may enjoy. I see it as my duty to continue to improve the game in hopes that the game is acceptable and fun for someone who decides to try it. I also want to release End\'s Reach onto physical media some day, and want it to be in the best possible shape before I do that.

Thank you for playing and I hope you enjoy the update!

1.61 - Combat Overhaul!

1.61 -

\n\nGeneral Fixes\n\n- Made controls on the map screen more reliable.\n\n- Bug fixed where the camera would rotate awkwardly on an unknown axis while rotating on the minimap screen.\n\n- Fixed a bug where sometimes you couldnt delete save files on PC\n\n- Hitboxes adjusted on some enemies\n\n- Animations adjusted on some enemies\n\nCombat Overhaul\n\n- Difficulty of combat raised across the board. Enemies have more health and are more resilient and have a few more generic abilities.\n\n- Added stagger system to enemies. Average enemies can no longer be permanently stunlocked off of the first hit. The player will have to do full combos in order to break their defences, which then allows them to be staggered and stunlocked as they could be originally. Enemies can also recover their defences quite quickly if the pressure is let up, meaning that you have to focus an enemy down!\n\n- Added critical strikes to enemies. About 20% of attacks will now be critical strikes. A critical strike will make the enemy glow purple, afterwards they will do an attack that is immune to stagger and deals extra damage. Be prepared to dodge these attacks if youre uncertain how much health the enemy has left!\n\n- A few tweaks to game feel to hopefully make combat more enjoyable if not still a bit simple.\n\nAudio\n\n- Added audio that was missing from important items. Doors, breakable rocks, etc.\n\n- Added better quality and more interesting sound effects to most enemies, higher bitrate and impact sounds. \n\n- Audio tweaks with the goal of making the game have more impact

Small Hotfix - Unity Security Flaw Update

Unity made developers aware of a security flaw in a wide range of editor versions that would affect all builds. \n\nAlthough it seems unlikely that a single player game like End\'s Reach is susceptible to this issue, I\'ve decided to quickly update the game to protect players in case it is eventually exploited.\n\nThank you and take care.

Patch 3 - Quality of Life

This update addresses a few of the long term issues that were pointed out by player's who've finished the game.

- Stamina Cost per tick while Sprinting was changed from 6 -> 3
- Sprinting is now slightly faster overall.

~ A common point of feedback was the stamina system seeming a bit unnecessary when traversing the open-world. Rather than remove it, stamina recovery and cost has been tweaked so that as long as you've collected a few batteries you shouldn't have to stop and recover nearly as much.

- Several softlocks fixed
- Various unintended puzzle skips fixed
- Popup text moves faster to make it less tedious if you decide not to skip it
- Various geometry tweaks in the world
- Some changes to text in UI and menus for readability

Music volume should now default to max

Patch 2 - March 26, 2025 - Volume options

- Added volume toggles for SFX and Music to the in-game menu
- Some visual bug fixes

Patch 1 - March 17th

Hello players! I want to thank everyone for their support during this launch window.

This is the first of a series of patches intended to improve the experience for users on Steam and bring the game more in line with this platform rather than the platform it originally launched on.

- Improvements to the way mouse and joystick is handled so that people playing purely with controller should have a better experience
- Several softlocks addressed
- Scrapyard boss has had AI improved to match other enemies in the game
- Culling / Draw distance increased in every environment (A slider to be added at a later date)
- Objects like the red-doors have had their culling settings changed so that they don't flicker
- F12 (Steam screenshot button) no longer hides the HUD, it's been remapped to F10
- Other small visual updates

There is more to come, I've been listening to feedback about things like stamina and visual animation blending and am working out solutions to address them without making the game unstable. I am a solo developer and so I tend to be fairly cautious with major fixes as stability is a big focus for this game.

End's Reach - Launching March 7th, 2025 - Windows, Linux and Mac OS

Hello everyone,

First off, I am excited to say that End's Reach will release onto Windows, Linux, and Mac on March 7th.

What is "End's Reach"?

End's Reach is an action-adventure game inspired by the late 90s and early 2000s era. The games I looked to for guidance were Metroid Prime and The Legend of Zelda - but the game ended up falling somewhere in between into unique territory. While it may not be the most 'PC focused' genre, I feel it's right at home on a Steamdeck and I hope the Steam community grows to love it the way that the Atari VCS community do.

Since I was a young boy in the 90's I have always dreamed of building an open-world and populating it with enemies, puzzles, and dungeons. After slogging through the mobile-game and app industry for several years I took the plunge of making my first full commercial game, and here it is.

Not an Early-Access

I do not believe in taking money for something that isn't ready to be sold. This is not an Early-Access period, the game has been in development since 2019 and released onto it's original platform in 2023. You're playing a tested version of the game that hundreds of players have already beaten. Your money does not go to a publisher or a corporation, it goes directly to the developer to support future games. The Atari VCS received 3 major updates over the last year, and the Steam version is the most definitive release of End's Reach to date.

I hope everyone has a good time with the game, it will be on a 10% discount for it's launch week.

Thanks for your support and thank you for playing.
