Project NexOS Is Coming to Steam Follow Development!

Its been a while since my last development update over on itch.io (here), but rather than posting about every small milestone, I wanted to wait until I had something substantial to share. Since last years update on the StoryImporter, Ive made major progress: the draft introduction to the story is now fully playable. This required significant refactoring of the original systems, but the result is a much more modular and expandable codebase. My main focus since then has been on the event system and the Messenger app where most of the interaction with NPCs takes place. This has included features like:

  • A typing indicator for better immersion
  • Simulated reading and typing speeds based on message length
  • Smart message grouping (i.e., combining sequential messages in the same chat bubble)
  • A reputation system unlocking dialogue based on player choices
  • An information system that remembers player discoveries and choices
  • Player actions outside the messenger influencing NPC responses
A core design decision behind all of this is to keep the game entirely data-driven. No event logic is hardcoded: every message, response, and action is stored and managed via the database. This makes it easy to iterate on the story using Obsidian Canvas and even major narrative changes can be imported via the StoryImporter without touching the core game logic. While theres still more work to do on this system and lets be honest, itll need further additions and polish as development continues but at this moment in time Im really happy with the current state. Its exciting to finally have the foundation of a solid, non-linear story engine in place. Creating the store page on Steam is also a huge milestone. I fully intend to take advantage of the platforms features, including achievements and Steam Cloud support at the very least. And finally looking ahead, one of the next big systems Ill be tackling is accessibility. Project NexOS is inherently a text-heavy game, and that brings its own challenges I don't see these as optional. As I make more progress I'll be sure to keep posting updates. In the meantime feel free to add to the discussion below and maybe even add Project NexOS to your wishlist. Exciting times ahead!

A modern-day narrative mystery where players explore a seemingly ordinary laptop to uncover hidden layers of conspiracy, surveillance, and stolen data, blending investigative gameplay with branching choices and a grounded tech-thriller tone.

Uncover the secrets hidden in plain sight.

When you pick up an old laptop at a local car boot sale, you’re not just buying outdated tech—you’re inheriting a digital trail tied to missing persons, government surveillance, and a powerful secret. What begins as idle curiosity quickly escalates into a high-stakes investigation with global implications.

Project NexOS is a modern-day mystery adventure where every click, search, and discovery pulls you deeper into a tangled web of conspiracy. Navigate a custom-built operating system designed to both conceal and reveal. Recover deleted files, decode encrypted messages, and piece together the stories of those who vanished trying to expose the truth.

Features:

  • Explore a fully interactive desktop interface filled with emails, documents, and hidden programs.

  • Solve layered puzzles that rely on observation, deduction, and real-world logic.

  • Uncover a dynamic story shaped by your choices, where the truth is never simple and the consequences are real.

  • Navigate a grounded tech-thriller world filled with secret organisations, whistleblowers, and digital activists.

  • Experience an atmospheric journey that blurs the line between fiction and reality, with subtle narrative branches and multiple endings.

Will you play it safe—or chase the truth, no matter the cost?

Behind the Scenes — A Promise to You

  • No content in Project NexOS was created using AI. All visuals, audio, and written material were made by real people.

  • The game includes no analytics, tracking, telemetry, or data collection of any kind. If a future update introduces optional crash reporting or gameplay analytics, players will be clearly informed and given the choice to opt in.

  • Every puzzle and piece of information needed to complete the story is contained entirely within the game. There's no need to search third-party websites or external resources — everything you need is right in front of you.
