Doodle Empires is an alternate history sandbox game all about drawing your own nations with your own histories and stories in a variety of maps. Watch your world take shape and evolve over time, and decide which nations will rise and which nations will fall. 

How to play:

1. Create your first nation by selecting a border color and typing up a name

2. Draw the borders of your new nation onto the map, while paying attention to how much drawing power you have left at the top

3. Once out of drawing power, click a nation to open the nation inspector, and hit the select button.

4. Draw a new card on the top right, which will allow you to alter the selected nation further

5. Repeat

Card Types:

  • EXPAND: There are three expand card types, which are small, medium and large expand, and they allow you to grow the borders of your selected nation. 

NOTE: Expanding into unclaimed territory will be much cheaper than trying to expand into the land of other nations

  • SPLIT: There are two split card types, which are the regular split and the small split, and both will cause you to carve out a new nation out of a portion of whatever nation you selected bfore drawing the card

  • UNION: The union card allows your selected nation to fully annex another nation as if part of a royal union or similar treaty

  • NEW NATION: The new nation card will allow you to create a new nation just as you did at the start of the game, which will allow you to make a whole new Origin Group

  • NEW LEADER: The new leader card will switch out the currently selected nation's leader with a new one with new traits, which will affect how that nation expands its territory

  • BUILD CASTLE: The build castle card allows players to place and name a castle into the territory of the selected nation, which will then protect the tiles surrounding the castle, and thus make it more costly for other nations to take it

Map Modes:

  • Political Mode: This mode allows players to see the borders of all nations on the map

  • Origin Mode: This mode allows players to see the original nation each nation split off from. Think of it as a sort of culture group map. NOTE: A nation's origin can also be seen in its nation inspector

  • Fort Mode: This mode allows players to see what tiles are currently protected by castles, and therefore more difficult to expand into

What's Next?

Doodle Empires is still early in development, and there is a lot I still want to add and expand on

Future mechanics and updates I'd like to add include:

  • Founding and adopting religions

  • Creating tribes, which can migrate and eventually settle

  • Disaster cards that will cause nations to lose land to the wilderness

  • Historical Ages cards, which will make certain cards more common during a set period of time

  • A lot of quality of life additions such as, map sizes, list of dead nations, UI design, music/sound, etc.

  • Much more to come

Much like the nations in Doodle Empires, this list is subject to grow and change over time as I continue development, but should give you an idea of what I hope to build here.

My name is Tanner/TanTan, and I'm working on this project on my own. I've been playing historical map strategy games since I was in middle school, and would occasionally like to draw on maps using the paint app on my computer. I've seen people similarly do the same using a spinning wheel with names of countries, events that happen, etc. That gave me the idea that instead of just winging it on paint like we've been doing I could make it into a real game with a bunch of possibilities and the freedom to make the world you like with some added randomness from drawing cards.  Anyway, thank you to anyone who decides to try my game, and follow my progress as I continue to develop Doodle Empires into a full game

Central Europe Update! (And More)

- Updated Central Europe map with new biomes

Earth Map Update!

Mediterranean and Caribbean Map Update

This is the start of updating the older maps with the new terrain types! Full list of changes below\n\n- Updated Mediterranean map\n\n- Updated Caribbean map\n\n- Added labels to the terrain types in the map maker \n\n- Reoriented the terrain buttons in the map maker, so now they are on the side going up and down instead on the bottom going left to right\n\nSorry about the delay on this one. I messed up the forests in the two updated maps and had to redo them, and then I got sick a few days ago lol. Next map update should be quicker, and I\'ll go ahead and say that I\'ll be working on The Middle East and Oceania next :)

Terrain Update

In this update we have new terrain types, which include jungle, desert, forest, and tundra. Full list of changes below!\n\n- New Terrain Types\n\n- New Terrain Leader Traits\n\n- New Leader Trait called \"The Great\", which is a less common trait that gives nations all of the benefits of the conqueror, expansionist and uniter traits.\n\n- Fixed issue with marker cursor setting\n\n- New Terrain Map Mode for a more colorful look at the new terrain types\n\n- New Terrain Types added to map maker\n\n- New West Africa map, which includes some of the new terrain types\n\nCurrently only the new West Africa map has the new terrain types, but I am planning on gradually updating the other maps to have the new terrain also. I\'m also thinking about adding an additional beach terrain type, which would include a coastal raider leader trait to go with it. As always, there\'s more to come, and please post about any bugs or issues with the game on Discord, itch.io or Steam :)

Some Restructure Fixes/Additions

A couple quick fixes and additions after the Restructure Update!\n\n

  • Fixed edit buttons that weren\'t working\n
  • Reduced lag from random nation button\n
  • Slightly increased speed of compass spinner\n
  • Added an age tracker in the different inspector windows to track how long a nation/origin/faith has existed\n

Restructuring Update!

This update restructures how some of the base mechanics I made early on in development function. Everything will work the same as it did before, but with less bugs along the way. I also updated The save/load system, and Im hoping it will result in less issues for the users who were reporting their games crashing while saving or loading a game. Theres perhaps still some work to do on the save/load system (I personally noticed a slight stutter in frames when saving/loading a game), but Im hoping that this new system will be better in the long run. Below are the changes I mentioned already, and a couple others.

  • New Save/Load System
  • Nations/Faiths being renamed to Nothing_To_See_Here Fixed
  • Possible fix for the drawing with castles bug (I myself have never been able to replicate the bug, but Ive tried adding a solution for what I think is happening. Lmk if that hasnt worked)
  • New South Asia Map!!

Whats Next? Ill be trying to fix any immediate bugs people are experiencing after this update, but after that I wanna work on actual changes to the game. Im thinking of new leader traits, a fourth bigger brush size, updates to the map selection menu, and more. Ill expand on that a bit later down the line, but for now I hope you enjoy the update and as always let me know about any bugs youve experienced. Ill do my best to fix them :)

Update News!! (Update not out yet)

The Update is not out yet, but I wanna go ahead and give a warning that the next update will have some restructuring to how nation data is stored, which will make any old saves unplayable and broken. Along with that Im also updating the save/load system to hopefully make saving and loading more stable and less likely to crash or load forever, and with this comes a new save file type. With those two things in mind, I will be setting it up so that the old broken save files will not show up in your saves list in game once the update arrives. This means that if you have any worlds that youre currently playing on you should enjoy them while you can for now, because they unfortunately wont be playable once I put the next update out. I would recommend taking screenshots of your worlds if youre really attached to any of them. I apologize for the inconvenience, and apologies for how long its taking for this next update to be finished as well. Im going to try to get the update out within a week or so, but my schedule has been a bit busy in general for the past month with Doodle Empires and my other responsibilities. I have a few more things to fix and some more testing to do, but if we get through this small hurdle Im hoping the game will be more stable for more people in the long run. Thank you for your understanding, and thank you to everyone who has played the early access release of Doodle Empires. The game is doing incredibly well compared to what I was expecting, and Im very grateful to everyone in the community for supporting my silly map game

Some Quick Fixes

- Fixed the delete custom map button
- Fixed being able to draw on water in custom map save games
- Fixed Typo
- Added new Doodle Barons

Next Up: I'm going to be looking into different save/load methods, so we can have faster/smoother load times. I'll also be looking into restructuring some of the code to prevent some of the bugs I've been seeing, which may break old saves when we get there, but I'll try to prevent that. Until then, enjoy the new fixes, and let me know about any issues :)
