Gather clues, collect treasures and unlock over 40 real-life locations in an authentic recreation of Tokyo spanning 1935 to 2025. Learn the history of the Imperial Capital through antique postcards, modern photos and cryptic clues that are randomized each time you play.

Inspired by the CD-ROM "multimedia experiences" of the 1990s like Encarta '96 and Cosmology of Kyoto, as well as modern detective games like The Roottrees are Dead and the Golden Idol series, Mysteries of Old Tokyo takes a set of postcards printed in 1930s Tokyo from the author's collection and brings them, hand-scanned, to your personal computer in full 1024x768 resolution.

Travel to over 40 real-life Tokyo locations, based on authentic antique postcards, while solving cryptic clues and chasing down treasure for Rare Items Acquisitions (Tokyo) Ltd. You'll learn something new every time you play.

Put your research skills to the test to assemble a database of Tokyo's most famous landmarks for your mysterious employers. Then, use that data to uncover inconsistencies and arrive at the truth.

Interact with a wacky cast of wandering spirits, from the flirty Kasuga-dono to the paranoid Nakamura-san, all with their own secrets to reveal - or not.

Brand new photography from 2025, aligned and matched with the original postcards, lets you see these postcards in a modern context. Plus, learn all about each location with the original 1930s postcard description (translated for the first time from Japanese) complemented by a present-day update covering the last 90 years of Japanese history.

As an agent for Rare Item Acquisitions, you'll come to know Tokyo like the back of your hand, while managing both time and money on your quest for the treasure. Your expense account is not bottomless!

As you play, unlock new locations to visit, together with a set of stunning low-poly 3D-rendered artifacts which you can browse at your leisure in the 3D Viewer.

Detective Fest: The Real Postcards Behind The Mysteries

Did you know the postcards in Mysteries of Old Tokyo are 100% real? They exist. On paper. I have them. I scanned them all myself, and they are safely stored away in my cupboard. So where did they come from? And how did they get to be in a hit (hopefully) new detective adventure game?

[/img]

I found them on a scorching day in September 2024. It was my first trip back to Japan in many, many years. I had arrived in Tokyo the day before, and I was still buzzing with the sights, sounds and smells of a city that has fascinated me for most of my life.

That morning, I visited a flea market in Shibuya.

[/img]

At the back were some stalls selling antiques and Showa-era memorabilia. Books, toys, militaria, maps, and posters... and then I found it.

50 Views of Greater Tokyo.

It was a postcard set, wrapped in a slightly tattered, but still shiny, silver cover. As I flicked through the postcards, something told me this was special. The stall owner asked for some price that was probably too high. I bought it immediately.

[/img]

There were scores of postcard collections printed in the early 20th century. The Tokyo Metropolitan Library has a great collection online , including many of \"my\" postcards. They were printed and reprinted; shuffled around, with photos reused, or colorised, and the text copied or tweaked as the years passed. They are an invaluable resource to show several things: not just what Tokyo looked like back then, but also what people thought was interesting, and important, and worthy of capturing on paper.

My set of postcards is called \"50 Views of Greater Tokyo\" or \"Greater Tokyo: 50 Scenes\", with the subtitle: \"New Special Edition: Splendid 3-Color Prints\". My best guess is that they were printed about 1935, since there are a few buildings from 1934, but the Diet Building (opened 1936) is talked about in the future tense. That may also be the reason the Diet Building is embossed on the packaging.

The publisher is unknown, though I suspect they might have some link with the Mitsukoshi Department Store, which always seems to get a mention.

They are a snapshot of a version of Tokyo, peaceful and prosperous on the surface, that was barrelling down the express route to total world war. Within ten years, many of these buildings would be ashes and rubble.

[/img]

These postcards are not particularly rare, except perhaps to find them nearly complete - 44 out of the original 50 survived in my set. That\'s what makes my set unique - whoever bought them, 90 years ago, picked out six and posted them to their friends and family. What we receive as antiques are the postcards they either didn\'t care to share, or the ones they liked so much they kept them for themselves.

[/img]

I can\'t help but wonder about the person who bought these postcards. What did they think of them? Were they in Tokyo for business or leisure? Two of the cards have addresses to Tajima, Fukushima, written in black ink. Were they from Fukushima, or did they have friends there? Ten years later, in 1945, were they alive or dead?

It staggers my mind to think that the postcards I now hold have passed down to me through 90 years of history. When the nation listened to the news transmitted back from Pearl Harbor, they lay on a table. As bombs rained on Tokyo, they sat on a shelf. When the Olympics came in 1964, they waited in a drawer. Through the glitz and glam of the 80s bubble, they lingered in a box of old junk. Maybe. Who knows? One day the little package was picked out, and put on a market stall, and then - like Taylor Swift\'s mansion - it was bought by me.

And that about wraps up the story. Half a year after I bought the postcards, as I was experimenting with game development, it occurred to me - wouldn\'t it be interesting to look at those postcards and dig into them? Locate them on the map, and find out what happened to them? Perhaps, even visit them?

And so, in April 2025, I created the first iteration of Memories of Old Tokyo - later to become Mysteries of Old Tokyo. The very next month I was back in Tokyo, slogging through pouring rain and blazing heat to capture as many of these postcards in modern photographs as I could manage. In a few months, the game based on all this will be released.

And to think it was just a chance find at an antiques market.

Demo 2.0 and Steam Detective Fest

Hello, detectives!

Demo 2.0 released with all-new gameplay, locations and puzzles

After the rush of October and the first demo, I\'ve been hard at work overhauling the gameplay and implementing feedback. I\'m really excited for you to play this new version and I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/3929680/Mysteries_of_Old_Tokyo_Demo/\" style=\"pill\"" style="color:#bb86fc;text-decoration:none;">Try the demo!

[/img]

The biggest change in this demo is an all-new gameplay loop. Instead of being stuck in your office filling in data, you now get to go out and collect information yourself! You\'ll have to visit each location, take a photograph, and collect evidence to bring back to the office.

The all-new location list now includes:

  • Ginza Street, the most representative shopping street

    [/*]
  • Kabuki-za Theater, Kobikicho, Kyobashi

    [/*]
  • Hibiya Park

    [/*]
  • The Takarazuka Theatre

    [/*]
  • Senso-ji Temple dedicated to a Goddess of Mercy, Asakusa

    [/*]
  • Kameido Tenjin Shrine

    [/*]

At the same time, as you explore these new locations, you\'ll encounter familiar spirits and get the opportunity to uncover their stories - if you like. The spirit report is now optional, so feel free to skip it if you want to see more locations.

[/img]

There\'s also visual and audio changes. There\'s a new CRT Filter which can be toggled using the side menu. Plus, you can sink your ears into a Tokyo soundscape with new ambient audio based on real recordings.

This demo is almost completely different with new puzzles and locations, so if you enjoyed the first demo, I think you\'ll love the new stuff in 2.0.

Please note: Because of the new gameplay, if you have a saved game from the old demo, it unfortunately will not be carried over. Additionally, there are important changes in the tutorial for the new gameplay. However, unlocked achievements will remain.

Keep an eye out for Mysteries of Old Tokyo in the upcoming Steam Detective Fest! I\'m really pleased to have been included since I love detective games of all kinds. A few of my favourites (and inspirations for Mysteries of Old Tokyo):

  • Return of the Obra Dinn

    [/*]
  • The Roottrees Are Dead

    [/*]
  • The Golden Idol series

    [/*]
  • The Ace Attorney series

    [/*]
  • Chants of Sennaar

    [/*]
  • Hypnospace Outlaw

    [/*]
  • Paradise Killer

    [/*]
  • Analogue: A Hate Story

    [/*]
  • Outer Wilds

    [/*]
  • The Forgotten City

    [/*]
  • Her Story

    [/*]

I wholeheartedly recommend all these games if you like smart detective puzzlers.

      \\
      ).

      [/*]

    Other:

    • Chapters 1 and 2 have been completely overhauled with a new selection of postcards and re-scanned images.

    Demo v1.2.3

Hey! Thanks to everyone who has played the demo so far. I\'m so pleased with the feedback and it\'s really helped hone my ideas about how this game should look and play.

Because of that, I have a bit of a new focus for the gameplay: I\'m hoping to test some new ideas to make the game a bit friendlier and more streamlined, without losing any of the depth that people have enjoyed so far.

As we exit this busy promotional period, I think this will probably be the last \"feature\" update for a while, though of course I will fix any bugs that come up. With my focus off marketing, I\'ll be working hard on the game content and new mechanics to get it ready for the planned release by Q2 2026.

    Features:

    • Locations now have one or more categories attached. When choosing the inconsistent action inconsistency, you have to select a correct category. For example, You cant have sang karaoke at the Dai-ichi Sogokan, because its a commercial office building.

      [/*]

    Bug fixes:

    • Fix bug where game would continue past Week 2 but with no content, causing soft lock.

      [/*]
    • Add a Then, so clunky text like I walked for 5 minutes. I walked for 5 minutes. is now slightly less-clunky I walked for 5 minutes. Then, I walked for 5 minutes.

      [/*]
    • Fix bug where Explore phase would start on map screen if player had previously accessed Free Roam mode.

      [/*]
    • Fixed rare bug where a twisted journey > 3 hours might cause a crash.

      [/*]

    Demo v1.2.2

Originally meant to be quite a small update, this one kind of grew and grew...

There are some quite fundamental changes to the game logic for this one, so please do send feedback in case you find any bugs or strange behaviour.

    Features:

    • Added Free Roam under Fun Stuff. In between assignments, you can explore Tokyo and any unlocked postcards without time or money limits.

      [/*]
    • Improved text filter: a magenta highlight is applied to matching text in text files when you use the text filter

      [/*]
    • Disabled Word Holes are now displayed with a greyish background to make it a bit more obvious that they cant be accessed, and the error highlight is not applied.

      [/*]
    • Text and image data is now marked as New if the player hasnt seen it yet.
• In the file list in the database, new files are marked with a *.

      [/*]
    • Additionally, on the Text Records/Image Records tab buttons, any new files will cause a New badge to be shown. Once all new data has been seen, the New badge is removed.

      [/*]
    • Seen files are persisted in your save file across sessions.

      [/*]
    [/*]
  • The detailed train map (in the Report or under Find-A-Route) has been improved:

    • Simplified interface: Via Station and Point tabs have been merged, so both stations and postcards are now accessed from a single picker.

      [/*]
    • The drop-down buttons have been replaced by a somewhat more accessible modal picker that shows a list of stations and postcards.

      [/*]
    • Plotting routes should be a bit more consistent now.

      [/*]
    • The map now also shows postcards (visible as stars).

      [/*]
    [/*]
  • Secret feature: You can press Alt+F to toggle fullscreen/windowed mode now on large (1440p/4K) monitors. Note that on a 1080p monitor it won\'t really change the window size.

    [/*]
  • Added 1 achievement when you start the tutorial (this should also activate from your saved file if you already finished the tutorial).

    [/*]
  •
Bugs:

    • Some duplicate text removed from the text for the statue of Dai Nanko.

      [/*]
    • When describing journeys, the text descriptions could be misleading, e.g. under two minutes for journeys between 2-5 minutes, or about five minutes for journeys up to 10 minutes. These have been tweaked.

      [/*]
    • Remove a duplicate about about in train journey descriptions.

      [/*]
    • At Otemachi station, Hanzomon line now only appears once.

      [/*]

    Other:

    • Imported basic data (name and coordinates) for all 44 postcards from the full game. These cant be visited in the demo but will show up as Locked Postcard on the map and browse screens.

      [/*]

    [ 2025-10-17 19:33:09 CET ] [Original Post]
    Demo v1.2.1

Some small improvements in time for Next Fest, including an important fix for streamers using OBS

    Features:

    • Added 6 new achievements.

      [/*]
    • Replaced Godot default boot screen with 90s startup icon.

      [/*]
    • The text cursor will now move to the new note when adding a note.

      [/*]

    Bug fixes:

    • Switched renderer from compatibility to mobile. This fixes the Godot 4.5 issue where output in OBS is mirrored/inverted.

      [/*]
    • Ensured music will restart when continuing the game after finishing the tutorial.

      [/*]
    • Tutorial stage 2 map pin is a bit more visible now when disabled.

      [/*]

    Other:

    • Analytics now includes information on the last spirit inconsistency, which should make it easier for me to troubleshoot any problems with inconsistencies.

    Demo v1.2 for Next Fest

Its been just a week since the demo came out, but it feels like so much has happened. An idle idea I had back in April - I wonder if anyone else remembers multimedia CD-ROMs? - has turned into something people are actually playing and enjoying!

Thank you to everyone who has been in touch - Ive read every piece of feedback and it really puts a smile on my face to hear people are enjoying the demo.

Please do leave a review if you have the time, even if its short - it really helps with the Steam algorithm.

Just in time for the end of Finnish Games Week, and the start of Next Fest, Im very happy to announce the new Demo v1.2 is available with some great new features and some satisfying bug fixes.

    Features

    Achievements!

There are now seven Steam achievements in the game, with more to come soon. If you already played part of the demo, most should unlock automatically when you start the game. Note: If you already finished the demo and completed Week 2, getting the final achievements (week 2 and end of demo) will require you to play through one explore cycle (from meeting the spirit to seeing the Chapter Complete screen). After that a new demo complete flag is set and the achievements will be unlocked.

    New menu!

With a nod to the confusing mystery meat menus of the late 90s, Ive put together a new, more visually exciting main menu with influence from classic 90s CD-ROM applications.

    [/img]

    New type of inconsistency!

You will now need to check the spirits stories extra carefully to find if its a time violation, an impossible journey, or the new Action inconsistent with location. For example, its hard to ride a horse on the Tokyo Expressway.

    [/img]

The Marunouchi postcard is now part of the regular location, so spirits can appear there in Explore mode.

Changed the inconsistency generator so wont get the same type of narrative inconsistency twice except, to keep it interesting, on rare occasions you will. So read carefully!

    Bug fixes

The mouse label will now reappear on Parallels Mode in the similarity finder, even if you complete one of the tabs, when you move to an incomplete tab.

Try to fix a weird bug where the fullscreen viewer appears out of nowhere if you click some wrong spot on the similarity finder.

Save button on database prep should no longer overlap the word list.

The button to open fullscreen view will no longer shrink if it is unclickable/under other controls.

Fixed the new volume slider not saving the music volume as an options file.

Fixed the new volume slider not being set visually on start-up.

Fixed a factual error regarding addressing Japanese emperors.

    Other

Version number is now shown on the main menu.

The right place, wrong year logic has been adjusted to avoid choosing a location thats has a start/end date too close to the current year. For example, if a place closed in March 1955, you could argue that it was open in 1955, for a few months, which means the spirit isnt technically lying if they say they went there in 1955. To avoid this ambiguity, there is a buffer of at least 1 year between the start/end year for a location and the actual year of the story.

Added dev tools for testing report and exporting postcard data.

    Demo v1.1.1 (Build 62)

    [/img]

Historically, the area of Tokyo east of the Sumida River was poorer and less developed, compared to the area around the Imperial Palace. Until this update, that was the same case for Mysteries of Old Tokyo - but now we welcome the Hanzmon Line and 12 new stations to the game, including the important hub of Kinshich and Oshiage for the Tokyo Skytree.

There\'s also numerous fixes to make puzzling a bit less clunky, including the ability to save marks when finding similarities and quickly check text and image clues at the same time.

    Features

Expanded the Tokyo rail network, now including stations east of the Sumida River and the all-new Hanzmon line.

The similarity finder screen on the report database is now part of the postcard page. This means you can leave and return to the similarity finder without losing your progress, and browse the text and image clues while plotting your marks. Also, you can go back and review the modern-day image after a successful analysis.

    Puzzles

Small fixes to make tutorial and puzzles a bit clearer.

    Bug fixes

Music should now start playing correctly if you quit and restart in the middle of the tutorial.

Music should generally play a bit more consistently now, instead of getting stuck and stopping.

    Other

The Back to city button on the map screen is now changed to the more accurate View last postcard.

    Demo v1.01 update (Build 65)

Its only been a day, but already a ton of people have played the demo and sent feedback! Thanks to everyone who has played and/or streamed the game - it makes me so happy to hear how much people have enjoyed it!

The feedback has been so useful. Im very glad to be able to fix some of the more common observations right away.

    Puzzle fixes

    • The Imperial Guard camp by the statue of Kusunoki clue was misleading, since the game would select it as a valid location for 1868-1899 despite the fact that the statue was only installed in 1900. This has been changed to the more plausible Imperial Guard camp in the Imperial Palace grounds, which is correct for 1868-1948.

      [/*]

    Bug fixes

    • The player icon would often cover up pins on the map (postcard locations and stations) making it impossible to click them unless you moved away and back again. Now, mousing over a pin will bring it in front of the player icon, so it can be interacted with normally even if the player pin is right in that location.

      [/*]
    • The music volume was a little high due to a bug that reset it to maximum - sorry for everyones ears. It should now default to a more moderate level.

      [/*]
    • Music volume can now be accessed at any time from the widget on the right side of the desktop, rather than having to go through the main menu. As a result, the volume options in the main menu have been removed.

      [/*]

Please keep your feedback coming, and remember to leave a review if you liked the demo!

Demo launch this Friday, Oct 3

    Hey fans of old Tokyo!

I\'m seeing some great and sustained support recently which is awesome. In the words of James Murphy: \"Thank you for supporting this weird thing.\"

    Playtest ends later today

A genuine-honest-from-the-bottom-of-my-heart thank you to everyone who playtested the demo. If you sent me any feedback at all, trust me it has been carefully recorded and in many cases, already changed the development of the game.

Your feedback has been so useful - bugs I knew about but thought no one would notice, bugs I never noticed, awesome new ideas that have really made the game better, and just nice things about the game.

So thank you! You know who you all are.

I\'ll be winding down the playtest today about midnight EEST (UTC+03), but just for today, I\'ve opened up the playlist so you can try it out right now without joining the waitlist!

Demo releases this Friday, Oct 3

And so as the playtest ends, the demo enters its final steps of readiness. The playtest went so well, I will be releasing the demo a few days early - October 3, on Friday, so you\'ll have the whole weekend to try it out. I hope you enjoy it! With a tutorial and two chapters of the full game, I think there\'s a good chunk of content to give you a flavour.

    New Japanese title

Naturally, I thought it would be nice if \"Mysteries of Old Tokyo\" had at least some Japanese localisation (although localising the game is a bit out of scope at the moment). So with the help of my translator we now have a Japanese title:

Teito Mystery Kik - \"Imperial Capital Mystery Travelogue\"

I tried it out on the box art and it looks very nice:

    Finnish Games Week (Oct 6-10)

Finally, preparations are gearing up for Finnish Games Week! Mysteries of Old Tokyo will be part of the Steam event, which is the first official thing of any kind I\'ll be taking part in. Which is very exciting. Can\'t wait to find out more about the other games included!

    Playtest Now Available

    Good news, everyone!

New trailer and demo release on Oct 6

Firstly: the demo release is confirmed for Oct 6 to coincide with the start of Finnish Games Week \'25.

The demo is packed with cool stuff:

    • Quick 10-minute tutorial chapter

      [/*]
    • Chapters 1 and 2 from the full game

      [/*]
    • Seven postcard locations and three characters from the full game

      [/*]
    • Extensive Tokyo train network covering 150+ years of Japanese railways

      [/*]
    • Endless mode where you can replay Chapter 2 with new characters, locations, and clues

      [/*]

To celebrate this, there is a new trailer which incorporates a lot of the new features and graphical upgrades over the last couple of months, so be sure to check that out if you have a minute.

    Playtest is rolling out!

Secondly: In preparation for the demo, the playtest is now open!

Thank you to everyone who has already signed up for the playtest. There\'s still plenty of time to take part in the playtest if you don\'t want to wait for the demo: you can register your interest with the Request Access button on the https://store.steampowered.com/app/3784300/Mysteries_of_Old_Tokyo/\"" style="color:#bb86fc;text-decoration:none;">store page for Mysteries of Old Tokyo . I\'ll gradually add more and more playtesters from the queue over time.

Some lucky playtesters will have already received access so please enjoy! Don\'t forget to send feedback if you come across a bug or something strange.

That\'s everything for now. See you in October, and if you haven\'t already, don\'t forget to wishlist the game!

Playtest and demo on the way! Also: Finnish Games Week 2025

Welcome to the first installment of the Mysteries of Old Tokyo devlog.

    Playtest (September) and demo (TBD)!

    [/img]

I had hoped August would be a productive month, and it was: Mysteries of Old Tokyo now has a complete gameplay loop, improved graphics, sound effects, all-new travel options, and a tutorial.

Because of that, I\'m keen (and a little scared) to start getting your feedback! That\'s why I\'m planning a playtest sometime in September. As always, there are probably hundreds of things that I don\'t see, or have got used to, or simply never thought of.

The playtest will be held through Steam together with a Discord to collect feedback. If you\'re interested, just follow for updates by clicking the Follow button on the https://store.steampowered.com/app/3784300/Mysteries_of_Old_Tokyo/\"" style="color:#bb86fc;text-decoration:none;">store page , or keep an eye out on the socials:

    @bolero_game on Threads

    @bolerosoft on Bluesky

As well as the playtest, which will be open to everyone who wants to try, I\'m hoping soon to release some kind of demo? Ideally that will coincide with...

    Finnish Games Week 2025

    [/img]

I\'m also excited to announce Mysteries of Old Tokyo will be participating in the first-ever Finnish Games Week Steam Event from October 6-10! Kiitos paljon, och samma p svenska.

As a happy resident of Finland for some years now, I\'m really proud to be included in this event. As a country of just 5 million, Finland really punches above its weight in the game industry.

In fact, one of the first things I ever learned about Finland was that Max Payne was from Finland and this weird guy called Sam Lake made it. Perhaps you\'ve played one of these Finnish games:

    • Angry Birds

      [/*]
    • Cities: Skylines

      [/*]
    • Clash of Clans

      [/*]
    • Alan Wake

      [/*]
    • Brawl Stars

      [/*]
    • Control

      [/*]

    or even:

    • Snake (Nokia 3310 ed.)

      [/*]

    and soon:

    • Mysteries of Old Tokyo!

      [/*]

If you haven\'t already, please remember to wishlist the game by clicking the blue star over there (it costs nothing!) and if you\'re interested in trying the playtest and demo, you can follow the game as well to get updates by clicking the Follow button on the https://store.steampowered.com/app/3784300/Mysteries_of_Old_Tokyo/\"" style="color:#bb86fc;text-decoration:none;">store page .

Thanks, and hope to have something for you soon!
