This small update fixes the modding/editing tools we broke with the previous patch.
Hey everyone,
This is a very minor update. It makes sure you can play Halfway on the upcoming Steam Deck from Valve.
Please note: This does not add full controller support. We added a default controller configuration that allows you to play the game out of the box with the build in Steam Deck controllers without having to fiddle with the settings.
We are excited for the Steam Deck and wanted to make sure you can play our games without issues when you get your hands on one.
Change list for 1.2.15
- A few improvements and fixes for Steam Deck compatibility
Version 1.2.14 This patch adds bitmap fonts and tutorial images to the list of files which can be replaced/overridden by game mods. This is first utilized for HalfwayMOD by Steam user Karnie, which translates the game to Simplified Chinese.
Version 1.2.13 This patch adds a new toggle, "Enable auto-scroll on user actions", to the controls options menu. If turned off, the game camera stops scrolling on player actions such as selecting or moving team members, or attacking enemy units.
Version 1.2.12 This patch updates the native launcher - the small executable we use to boot into the bundled Java runtime - to improve compatibility with some Windows 10 systems. It also removes 32-bit support from the launcher of the Mac OS version. In addition, we disabled the option to submit crash logs via HTTP request from within the crash report dialog.

Version 1.2.5 This update contains a number of bug fixes. A note to Windows users experiencing crazy mouse cursor behaviour in-game when using high DPI desktop scaling: we don't have a proper solution for this issue yet. Please read the "known issues" forum posting describing how to deactivate DPI scaling for selected applications. Changes:
- Fixed rare crash caused by invalid backpack items (medkits, grenades) when opening the ring menu.
- Updated stim pack item descriptions.
- Updated description of Joshs active skill.
- Fixed glitch which allowed to cast steady shot on other squad members.
- Fixed containers lootable at range after move was interrupted by an enemy.
- Fixed unconscious units blocking movement of allies after an AI unit passed its position.
Today we are introducing a public beta branch of Halfway on Steam which runs native code on Windows, Mac OS and Linux instead of relying on a Java Runtime Environment. This build is based on version 1.2.3 and has been created with Excelsior JET. We are looking for feedback how well this version works on a wide range of user systems. If you are interested in having a look, please read the details and provide feedback here: community forum discussion
Version 1.2.3 This update contains a number of bug fixes. In addition, we've added more save points to the homebase: the progress is now also saved before starting the next mission, and when quitting the game from inside a homebase. Changes:
- Progress is now additionally saved when quitting the game from inside a homebase, and when starting the next mission.
- Fixed bug which could lead to a broken save game when quitting the game in last part of "Commando Deck: Citizen-A" mission.
- Fixed bug which could cause the player to get stuck in 2nd part of "Amber Mainframe" mission.
- Team achievements are now re-checked (and triggered, when needed) every time the player visits a homebase.
- Editor: fixed crash when trying to load or save a map.
- Editor: fixed character pickup attribute not listing available units.
- Increased stability of editor when entering or loading invalid data.
Version 1.2.2g This is a minor update which just reverts the change we did to the Java VM launch options in version 1.2.2b. We suspect this change has been the cause for the sound bug some Windows user experience with versions after 1.2.1. As we were not able to reproduce this bug locally, we'd appreciate if some of you who encountered it can give us feedback if this update is of any help. Changes:
- REVERTED: Modified JVM options on Windows to hopefully fix localization issue with assets not loaded correctly on some systems.
Version 1.2.2e This update fixes the Steam Workshop download issue. Subscribed workshop items are now correctly made available to everyone, not only the content creator. Changes:
- Fixed subscribed Steam Workshop item not downloaded and recognised correctly by the modding system.
- Modified game to fully restart after mod options have been changed, avoiding resource leaks and potential crash conflicts.
- Fixed some issues for content creators when having both local and workshop versions of the same mod available.
- Fixed re-publishing to Steam Workshop not correctly uploading the new version.
- Fixed issue with outdated intro text used when starting new game with "Game Mode ++" mod.
- Fixed crash on very first start of AssetMetaTool.
Version 1.2.2b This update delivers some bugfixes and minor additions to modding support. Please note that we are still investigating why it's not possible for Steam users to download the sample mod after they subscribed to it in the Steam Workshop. The crash caused by this error has been fixed, but for the time being the mod still won't be visible/available in the game if you are affected by this issue. If you still want to try the mod right now, you can download it manually right here. Just copy the ZIP file into the Steam/SteamApps/common/Halfway/mods/ directory (OS X: Steam/SteamApps/common/Halfway.app/Contents/MacOS/mods/). Changes:
- Fixed crash after subscribed Steam Workshop item failed to downloaded successfully.
- Made intro text available in lists/introText.txt to allow for modification.
- Made ammunition item available in lists/ammunition.json to allow for modification. Note: It's not possible right now to add more ammo types. This is not supported by the game code.
- Modified JVM options on Windows to hopefully fix localization issue with assets not loaded correctly on some systems.
- Fixed rare crash when trying to render invalid squad target indicators.
- Fixed rare crash when trying to render invalid bullet hit animation.
Version 1.2.1 This is a minor bugfix release. Changes:
- The game now defaults to 1280x720 windowed mode when started the first time.
- OS X 10.6 only: improved Java runtime detection on OS X 10.6 hosts. If no system JRE is detected, it falls back to the bundled JRE.
Version 1.2.0
This is a major content update which delivers modding support with Steam Workshop integration, modding tools, multiple save slots, and a new difficulty mode to the game.
Please read our modding tool announcement for more information.
Changes:
- Modding support & modding tools have been added. Mods can be published to and shared with Steam Workshop.
- A "Game Mode +" mod has been introduced which adds a new level of difficulty to the game.
- Added multiple save slots.
- Various minor mission adjustments and bug fixes.
Changes:
- This update includes changes to how save games are stored. Please read the notes below for more information.
- Updated OS X launcher to check for the OS version. For systems running OS X 10.6.8 or earlier the game will ignore the bundled Java runtime, but use the system's Java runtime instead.
- Enemies now don't move first anymore in first part of prison sector, and in 6th optional mission.
- Made 6th optional mission a little easier overall.
- Updated Windows launcher to not require the Visual Studio 2010 Runtime DLLs installed.
- Fixed rare crash related to inventory management and ammunition items.
- Fixed crash on startup on systems with very restrictive anti-virus isolation settings.
Changes:
- Added some weapons & ammunition to pick up in last part of prison break level.
- Tweaked second part of crew quarters mission to be easier for players. Enemies now don't move first after the jump, and appear in other positions.
- Removed some remaining stimpacks we missed when removing temporary stat boosts from the game.
- Modified video initialisation code which might help to fix the "OpenGL 2.0 or higher with the FBO extension is required" error on some systems which clearly pass the requirements.
Changes:
- A graphics option has been added which allows to disable the UI color displacement effect.
- Fixed Jenna's Berserk skill consuming both AP when used to shoot at more than one target. It's now using only 1 AP as intended.
- Fixed weapon reload possible in combat with zero AP via the inventory screen, causing unwanted side effects.
Halfway Version 1.1.1
Changes:
- It is now possible to shoot in melee range. Right-click will cycle through melee, 1 AP and 2 AP shots, depending on how many AP your unit has left.
- All special skill cooldowns are now reset when leaving combat.
- In the 3rd optional mission, the 4th wave of enemies does not attack immediately anymore after spawning.
- Fixed use of stimpack with negative health effect turning units with low HP into zombies.
- Fixed game stuck when enemy didn't die 'properly' after blowing himself up with a grenade.
- OS X: Fixed another compatibility setting which might have caused the game not to run properly on OS X 10.6 and 10.7.
Halfway Version 1.1.0
Hello everyone! This content update introduces some new items and mechanics! We’ll of course continue to collect feedback from our customers and try to incorporate as many of your ideas as is reasonably possible.
- Similar to ranged attacks, all weapons now feature a melee attack damage range.
- We introduced 10 shiny, new and diversified weapons to the game!
Changes:
- Added min/max damage range for melee attacks, with a small randomized variation for every weapon generated.
- Rebalanced melee damage of all weapons, plus added 10 new weapons to the game.
- The weapon info on mouse-over has been adjusted to reflect the latest changes, as well as giving a better indication about the 'maximum range' a weapon is supposed to be effective.
- New stimpacks have been added to some of the levels.
- Fixed character doing the crazy dance on his first move in combat, after his walk has been interrupted by an enemy.
- Fixed wrong damage values after initially picking up a weapon. They are now equal to the values after reloading the game.
- Moved some crates around in optional level "We need more firepower" to create more room for fighting bad guys.
- Made a few more improvements to reduce memory usage during gameplay.
- Fixed crash reported by players who somehow seemed to reach level boundaries. It's nothing but void out there!
List of changes in version 1.0.5
Changes:
- The final encounter has been rebalanced. Skills are now usable in this fight, but one certain foe might not be very impressed by Gina's Paralyse skill.
- After careful consideration Dr. Schaffer decided that he's a citizen too valuable for front duty, so he swapped his and Subject 13's active skills. Coincidentally, he managed to rigorously optimise cooldowns of those two skills.
- Shop prices for medkits and energy cells have been updated.
Bug fixes:
- Fixed achievement for defeating the final encounter not triggered properly. Players who are already past that point can 'continue' from the main menu once again to obtain the achievement, as long as they didn't start a new game already.
- Fixed game stuck if Jenna gets knocked out during use of her Berserk ability.
- Fixed exit in first part of prison level only activated after all enemies have been killed.
- Fixed enemies sometimes spawning at positions occupied by player units.
- Fixed errors in Stimpack item descriptions.
- Fixed character UI not updated properly when switching from/to inventory screen.
- Added squad sizes to mission briefing descriptions.
- Improved behaviour of camera scrolling via hotkeys when other keys (e.g. ALT) are pressed at the same time.
List of changes in version 1.0.4
Changes:
- We made further adjustments to reduce dynamic memory usage during missions.
- We also identified and fixed a bug which caused an increasing amount of memory not released properly when switching characters in combat.
- Modified Gina's passive skill to regenerate 1 HP every two rounds, ignoring her maximum health value.
- Unconscious units are revived now when leaving a level.
- Fixed crash when enemy target was lost while executing some special skills, e.g. shield remove.
- Added 'physical' exits to some levels which could only be completed by using the UI button in the upper right corner.
List of changes in version 1.0.3
Changes:
- We identified and improved some code parts which caused increased memory usage during gameplay, eventually leading to memory exhaustion. This should fix (or at least improve) gameplay for players affected in the weapon storage and commando deck levels. We will continue our efforts to analyse and further improve in this area.
- Edit: 1.0.3c contains a small update which should fix the crash some users experience on OS X 10.7 or earlier.
- Fixed health packs usable on unconscious units.
- Fixed crash when loading game options after an input action was bound to the ',' key.
- Fixed rare crash while aiming at enemies.
- Fixed crash when typing SPACE+ENTER in debug console.
- Added some more OS information to crash reports.
List of changes in version 1.0.2
Changes:
- We've made some adjustment to the Halfway executable on Windows which loads and runs the game via its bundled Java VM. This should fix the out-of-memory crash on game start some of you experience.
- Enabled flag which allows the game to fall back to OpenGL software rendering in case of an "OpenGL is not supported by the video driver" error. This might allow playing the game on those systems. Please note that rendering performance may suffer (on affected systems only).
- Fixed bug causing some players not able to complete the 2nd laboratory mission.
- Fixed team equipment UI not refreshing properly when recycling a grenade.
- Fixed errors in some weapon and suit descriptions.
Here is the list of changes in version 1.0.1.
Known but unresolved issues:
- Some people sent crash reports which seem to be caused by out-of-memory errors at start of the game during loading of texture assets. We are still investigating this issue.
- It seems to be possible to recycle some invalid items under certain circumstances. We fixed the crash itself, but weren't able to reproduce the causing issue so far.
- Fixed crash when trying to open the game options menu on some systems.
- Fixed bug causing display resolutions on some systems not considered as 'supported' by the game.
- Fixed occasional crash when processing keyboard events in-game.
- Fixed crash when clicking on disabled buttons such as "restart level" in the in-game options menu.
- Fixed crash when trying to attack using the special skill hotkey, without equipping a weapon first.
- Fixed crash when trying to recycle some invalid item.
- Fixed movement overlay not refreshed if action points were spent using key shortcuts, without opening the ring UI first.
- Fixed bug which could cause units to repeatedly hit critically in combat, ignoring the result of the crit roll.
- Fixed typo in intro sequence.
