v0.2.1 - Bug fixes, Controller Improvements & Wider Compatibility

We hope you're enjoying all the goodies from v0.2! v0.2.1 has come around fast as we've tried to fix a bunch of minor bugs and adjustments but also some unforeseen major issues with hardware compatibility.

General announcement regarding GPU compatibility:

As mentioned in the v0.2 release notes, we've shifted our AI over to a new back-end inference engine. This was to facilitate voice input, cross-platform compatibility but also a bunch of exciting AI improvements in future. What we didn't anticipate for this new engine to not work on a bunch of people's hardware... sorry about that. If you were one of those effected you can now switch back to the legacy engine by selecting DML in the "model type" drop-down in the options menu. This will only work on Windows and you cannot use voice input! We'll try and transfer as many AI improvements as we can to the legacy engine but pretty soon we're going to be unable to. We've been looking into alternatives so stay tuned. If your GPU still doesn't work try the CUDA option to see if that fixes it. Many have also said the new engine is slower. We're aware of this and are working on optimisations to bring it more in line with (and hopefully eventually overtake) the legacy engine. We've added a timer to the bottom of the options menu to more easily do a comparison.

Change List:

  • Controller improvements: We found many issues with the original controller support that are now fixed. This should lead to a much more seamless experience. Scrolling text is now with the right stick.
  • Discord Presence: Let your discord friends know you're playing Millennium Whisper! They can even see who you're talking to!
  • Changes to Reputation: Reputation labels are now related to popularity as we shift it away from being about how in the loop on gossip you are. We also added a mechanic whereby high reputation can prevent others from spreading rumours, whilst low reputation causes rumours to be spread automatically.
  • Facial Expressions: Found a bug where certain character facial expressions weren't working. You should find the characters much more expressive than before.
  • Prevented bug causing save bricking from leaving tutorial midway through.
  • Fixed a bug where Arlo could send a rumour to himself.
  • Added text popup to show when a character leaves early.

Update v0.2 - Play with your Controller & Voice, New Character Outfits & More!

Its been a long time but weve been busy super busy! This is Millennium Whisper's first major update since release and with it weve laid the foundation for whats to come whilst polishing the current experience. Weve been focussing on the tech behind MW recently, trying to make it run on as many devices as possible, but as we start to move away from trying to get the damn thing working on your machines well be spending a lot more time on exciting new content and AI improvements!

Whats New:

  • Voice Input: Typing can be tiring, but thats not the only reason we added speech input. We find it makes for faster paced and more spontaneous! And dont worry, you can still edit your response afterwards if youd like to slightly reword anything

  • Controller Support: With the addition of voice input we found it made perfect sense to add controller support as well. This works through Steam Input if you want to fiddle with the settings. Now is the perfect time to play MW from the sofa!

  • New Character Outfits: Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter Characters actually dress for the season! Each character now has two additional, lovely outfits to switch between, many with different hairstyles too!

  • New Narrative System: We basically had to remake a lot of the game from the ground up and events are now able to be more dynamic, fleshed out and check and change player stats! In the process revamped a couple locations:

    • The Cinema: Weve altered how characters interpret each film, so youll have to be a lot more careful about who you take to what film. But you could get a nice stat bonus for getting it right

    • The Stadium: Tired of the same old England v Germany football match? Well, all sorts of crazy stuff can go down at the Stadium nowadays! Why not take a date there and find out for yourself?

    • The Library: Pick which book to read and get a stat boost. Can you remember what you read already?

    • And some more secret ones

  • These changes allow us to create content more regularly, so keep an eye out for more story content and date location improvements.

  • New Compatibility Mode: Anyone with a GTX card should now automatically be switched over to the new compatibility mode that will (hopefully) get the game up and running, but youll still need to meet the minimum VRAM requirement. Just remember to update your nvidia drivers first!

  • Memory Improvements: The game is now officially supported on 6GB graphics cards and the new voice input mode is supported on 8GB cards! In addition, anyone with these specs can expect to be able to up their context length for better AI memory. A more comprehensive AI memory patch is planned for a future update.

  • New Option Selection System: We found the original option system a little confusing so weve completely revamped how options are displayed and selected.

  • Revamped Phonecalls: Speaking of options! Now when calling someone to organise a date you get to pick between two random options to ask them out with.

  • Stress Scaling: Theahem severity of the options presented to the player during Phonecall, Gate and Corridor events is now scaled based on your stress stat so be sure to find time for some R&R if you find yourself faced with some spicy choices.

  • Rumour Event CG: Rumours were a bit dull given how frequent and important they are to gameplay so we spiced it up with a lovely CG that depicts (or doesnt depict) the character in question talking behind your back. We plan to add many more CGs in future.

  • Linux support: The game is now available on Linux! We are working hard on getting the game on Steam Deck but the performance isnt yet up to our standards (same for Mac Silicon). But for now if you have a desktop or laptop that would run the game on Windows, itll run just fine on Linux.

  • Minor Bug Fixing and Performance Improvements

Were incredibly glad to have our community supporting us through this early stage and we deeply deeply appreciate every single one of you. Please join the discord, even if it's just so you can admire the amazing fan art and hilarious AI screenshots!

We hope you enjoy the update and look forward to what we have in store for you next! Keep whispering! - The Parable Studios Team

v0.1.4post

Here's a small update to alleviate some of the issues introduced in v0.1.4

  • Fixed an issue where the enter button wasn't working. This also fixed the case where the leave early button would disappear, so now if said button is missing it's only because you need to get to the point where you're chatting first.
  • A fix to how corridor dates invites are tracked so there should be less issues with those getting voicemails for missing dates even though you went, or from accepting invites but closing the game and having to reject them later.
  • A couple fixes to save files introduced by Steam Cloud integration.
Speaking of save files, if you have issues with save files transfering from old versions of the game then check out the save file entry in #FAQ channel in the discord where we have a tutorial incase of any issues. Thanks so much for everyone's patience and support!

v0.1.4 Compatibility Mode, Leaving Early and other such goodies

We're very busy laying the foundations for some big updates coming soon, so in the meantime (and just in time for Easter!) here's an update increasing hardware coverage, fixing a couple bugs and adding some lovely quality of life features. Changelog:

  • There's a new "compatibility mode" which should allow some people who have been having issues running it on their graphics card more ability to do so. This is also the case for 4GB card users to see if you can run the small model now with 1100 context length. If you've got a 4gb card we want to hear about how it goes in the discord!
  • Leave events early whenever YOU want! Sick of someone? Press the little button and say goodbye.
  • Saves are now put into the cloud! So you can switch computers with ease Now that we've integrated the steamworks API we should hopefully have a lot of fun little features on the way soon (like achievements!)
  • New visuals for the tutor note event, like a little wink ;)
  • A fix for a bug where the space bar would stop working when you mash the button to choose options
  • a fix for when it's a full moon where you've had no rumours where it tells you you successfully defused all them all instead of saying nothing.
  • added steam overlay integration
  • green enter button on the phone screen for that aesthetic goodness
Want the deets on these 'big things' we're yapping on about? Join the discord! We've had wonderful fan art, hilarious screenshots of outrageous conversations, and pet pictures. It's just generally a lovely time and you're missing out. You're only robbing yourself. Keep Whispering! - the Parable Studios team

v0.1.3post2 Hotfix

A small fix to the dramatic changes to stats that we saw with v0.1.3. They should be much less punishing now. Also a couple other little fixes snuck in here:

  • Going to the Circus special event now has the proper background and music
  • A fix to a bug in how affection level was parsed when characters gave you a 10
  • The AI crash error now tells you what GPU you have too. Which helps us a lot when debugging your issues, so send that along too!
Bigger updates on the way! (but maybe no minor update this Friday... We're working super hard though believe us!) - Parable Studios

v0.1.3 - New Random Event Types, Standard Model Improvement & Many Many Bugfixes

Is there no stopping the MW update train? Weve managed an update every two weeks with minor changes and AI improvements but with v0.1.3 were adding the first lick of new content. Thank you everyone for your support and patience as we work towards these changes and the greater updates. Well hopefully have a roadmap out very soon with details and estimated release dates for v0.2, v0.3 and beyond. But right now, sink your teeth into v0.1.3

New Random Events!

Three new random events can now happen throughout the week whilst at school including:
  • Lunchroom events - who will you choose to sit with at the lunch table?
  • Gossip events - listen in on some of the rumours circulating the school, and maybe try and figure out whos spreading it
  • Tutor note event - okay we get it, the tutors not the most helpful in solving rumour problems (yet), but hes trying to make it up to you by acquiring (stealing???) the diary notes of your classmates following dates with them. The tutors noble (???) deeds can give you a better grasp on how you did in events.
We hope these will add a bit of variety and greater flexibility to the weekday activities to supplement the Corridor and Gate events. Speaking of

Random Event Improvements

We received a lot of feedback regarding random events at the gate causing AI malfunctions and the coarse corruption of relationships. Weve made a collection of little changes that should make this happen less frequently and have them act more consistently with your previous relationship when asking you out on dates/to walk home. Let us know what you think and more improvements to this are on the way too.

Standard Model Improvements

Weve optimised the Standard model for 8GB+ card users to now be able to run with higher context lengths more consistently. Have a play with the slider and let us know what works best for your system!

Misc Improvements & Bug Fixes

  • The background you choose changes your initial stats! This will become a lot more important in a later update
  • Added a new tutorial for how characters are met and fixed a bug where the game would break if you turned the tutorials off.
  • Changed Trivia stat to Reputation which is more representative of the AIs perception of it.
  • Can press enter to leave the voicemail screen and its more obvious of how the voicemail button works.
  • Connor now has a secret glasses-less sprite.
  • Added the day of the week to the top righthand corner of the chatting screen.
  • Implemented save backups upon game open to stop certain issues with corrupted saves.
  • New years event interactions have been shortened to stop them dragging on too long.
  • Pivot events now scale off of number of events, not just average affect, to prevent getting pivots from low interaction-high affect characters, before long-term relationships.
  • Fixed bug where you could end up with a character you never met if you ruined your relationship with everyone else lol
  • Implemented a number of AI context optimisations so that they hopefully remember more and remember better.
  • Fixed a bug with which characters are picked as starting characters from each pool based on background picked as some characters were missing.
  • Added measures to avoid back to back random encounters with the same character.
Thats everything but theres a lot going on behind the scenes for larger content updates so stay tuned. I know we keep banging on about it but every one of you supporting us this far means the world to us as we love what were doing and we just want to keep going so thank you to everyone whos made that possible. Keep whispering! The Parable Studios Team

v0.1.2 Update - Small Model, CPU Model & New Font!

Hi everyone! We're incredibly excited to see a huge increase in players since launching v0.1.1! We have to give a huge thank you to MadMorph who's hilarious video you can find here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNmNeezTPao It's been fantastic speaking to everyone whose joined the discord so far! Your feedback is super valuable and it's been so rewarding seeing people enjoying what we've made so far! It's galvanised us to work even harder to make Millennium Whisper as good as it can be! Speaking of which, v0.1.2 is out!

Small Model for 6GB VRAM Users (+CPU Model)

We get it. What's the difference between System RAM and Video RAM? A lot of people have been confused on why they can't get Millennium Whisper running on their machine so we're working hard to make it so as many people can play as possible with what they have. The new Small Model can be used by those with 6GB of VRAM! In addition, we've added an experimental CPU model that can be ran on any windows PC with enough system RAM, but beware that this version is very slow and we do not recommend it for a full playthrough. However, if you just want to give the game a quick try and don't have the right hardware this should be better than simply being refused entry. In future we're looking to add Apple Silicon support so stay tuned!

New Font!

By popular demand: a new font. We're working to add a number of different interchangable options but we find this one to be a big improvement on it's own for the time being. Hop in the discord to get a say on what font you'd like to see!

Other Misc Improvements & Bugfixes

We're constantly listening to feedback and trying to improve the general experience. Here are a few of the changes we've managed to sneak into this update.
  • The names of locations is now shown when selecting you date location whilst on the phone
  • Stat label changes are now displayed on the day change screen.
  • A check to make sure you really want to delete your savefile when overwriting.
  • Discord button on the homescreen! Hop in and say hello!
  • Backgrounds chosen at the start of the game now have their titles shown in the character creator, which should give you slightly more of an indication to their effect.
  • Some fixes to saving and quitting often showing incorrect save file information
  • Blowbees no longer is just a black screen! Enjoy the wonderful blowbee's mascots visage and beautiful musical accompaniment.
Let us know what you think and if you want more details on what's in the works check out the discord. Oh, keep whispering!

v0.1.1post

Quick issue for fix with breaking on date summaries on certain people's computers and speedy fix for full moon notification. You can also now see the words associated with your stats by hovering over the stat on the home screen!

v0.1.1 Update - Options Menu, Sound/Randomness fixes, & New Models!

Hey everyone, We've been chipping away at all your feedback as well as working on some of the big content updates that are further on the horizon, but don't be fooled v0.1.1 is a big improvement from v0.1:

New Models

We've updated the Large and Standard AI models to new and improved versions. We're happy to say that players with 8GB card who have been using the Standard model will see a HUGE improvements here. Overall characters are less likely to repeat themselves or get confused and are just generally more engaging. This is only the first iteration though and there's many more AI improvements coming very soon!

Options Menu

Speaking of models, you can now choose for yourself which one to use in the new options menu! Before we defaulted to the size your card will be capable of but now the power is in your hands. For instance, you could use the Standard model with a 12GB card and boost the context length instead, allowing the characters a little bit more memory. You can also lower the context length if you're running a lot of simultaneous VRAM intensive tasks (i.e. OBS) and are experiencing crashes. But that's not all, you can adjust the music levels and text speeds too!

Full Moon Popup

Wondering what the effects of the full moons rampant rumour ruminations are? We found that it was hard to tell how things were changing when full moons took place, so we added a popup that should give you some idea of what's happened.

Other Misc Changes & Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a bug with rumours where it was causing characters to lose their minds on full moons
  • Added a popup for when the AI has crashed for whatever reason, with a more useful error message (if you're feeling generous you can send to us on our discord server)
  • Redid a couple of random events, locations and story event formatting
  • Many more secret and embarrassing bugs we don't want to tell you about
Let us know what you think and keep whispering!

ATTENTION: Millennium Whisper's AI system runs locally, therefore your computer requires a GRAPHICS CARD with 6GB VRAM (video memory) MINIMUM to play the game.

Running the game on CPU is possible with 16GB SYSTEM RAM, however, running the game on CPU is STRONGLY DISCOURAGED as it is INCREDIBLY SLOW. Check your hardware against the game’s minimum requirements before purchasing!

It’s 1999 and there is a rumour going around. If two people confess their feelings for one another at the turn of the millennium, they will be destined to be together in a thousand year fairytale romance! Who will choose you on New Year's eve?

Welcome to Escafeld College, the school in which you spend the next year meeting a cast of 13 unique characters. Taking them to a variety of locations and making new friendships along the way!

Building your skills is going to be vital to maintaining your standing at the college and with the cast. A delicate balance that will allow you to grow closer to the people you like. While also keeping you in the good graces of everyone else you meet at Escafeld.

But don’t take it too easy because rumours spread fast! They can be sweet, silly or sinister. Hell hath no fury like an Escafeld Student scorned.

Millennium Whisper is a one of a kind experience using AI.

Rather than the standard dry AI experiences trained on large sets of data from the internet, the cast in Millennium Whisper is played by AI that are exclusively trained on in-house creative work and runs entirely on your own hardware!

The possibilities are endless, and the way you play the game will be entirely unique to you. Each of our (13) characters has their own unique personality and behaviours powered by their own separately trained model. In Millennium Whisper you can have complex relationships and deep conversations, or enjoy a more light hearted experience, having fun with the characters.

Play the game your way, and write your own story.

🎀- Intricately drawn pixel art cast:

Game takes place entirely in a pixel aesthetic with a pixel art cast, environments and UI!

🎀- Ground breaking AI Conversation System:

A new approach to AI in video games. Converse with the cast like never before. With an AI trained by real actors portraying the cast!

What you say matters. With realistic conversations the cast feel the full range of emotions. You can upset them, make them jealous and more!

🎀- And battle through rumours:

Be aware, rumours can spread through Escafeld College quickly! The cast can spread rumours about you, and they could be good or bad!

🎀- RPG Stat System:

Choose how you spend your free time, and build your stats. These will shape the experience you have at Escafeld College!

🎀- Completely Offline:

Unlike other AI games that require you to be online, Millennium Whisper is entirely offline!

🎀- 13 Character Cast:

Each with their own look, personality, interests, and more. They won’t make it easy for you, and you’ll quickly find yourself immersed in the challenge of trying to Rizz-Em-Up!
