Calling All Scouts - We Need Your Voice!

Hey everyone!

We're excited to share that we are working on some new features for Oppidum, and we want YOU to be part of shaping it.

[img src="https://clan.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/images/44301819/b04c7cd1d34ab914a4806a2e93551cb517c853df.png"][/img]

We've always mentioned we released a complete game, with a finished story, and we are not enlarging it. However, we've always wanted to keep adding little things here and there that would make your experience a better one. For example, we added Sleeping bags, the option to choose Unlimited usage of Teleport Scrolls, a new, more accessible, fishing minigame, plus other fixes and improvements.

Now, we are working on several exciting things, but we'd like you to know about a couple of them in specific:

  • Respawn points: we'll be adding something you'll be able to craft to respawn in your own camp, and there'll be more of those around the island, in certain specific pre-selected points, where you'll be able to respawn once you've discovered them. (The initial idea of respawning in the base with a 'totem' was proposed by Flayre in the Community Forum, and we really appreciate feedback like this, so we took it to heart and designed this; now we need to implement it!)

  • Facial customization in Character Creation: after careful thought, we've heard your feedback and we're starting to see what kinds of facial customizations we could add to your teenage scout characters. We're considering little short beards, facial "war paint", glasses and other facial paint.

Here's where you come in: We're opening up the floor for community input on this specific feature of Facial Customization. What would you like to have for your character?

Your feedback has always been valuable to us, and this is a perfect opportunity to directly influence the game's development. We'll be reading every single comment and taking your suggestions seriously.

Thanks for being such an amazing community. Let's make Oppidum even better together!

Even though we are quite a small tiny team, we are always in touch with the community, listening to your feedback and reports (if you've got any issue we are not aware of, please let us know, we want to help), and so we bring you today the last Patch Notes: [img src="https://clan.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/images/44301819/1a30d7a6d96143472bb8dd27097ca238a583679f.png"][/img]

Improvements

  • Tasks achievement will progress for everyone in the party when one task is completed, instead of progressing only for the player who completes it

  • Fishing difficulty has been linked to the Health Behavior setting, so if Health Behavior is No Damage Taken or Lots of HP Regen., it will be much easier; if its Some HP regen. (default), it will be a little bit easier; and the previous (original) difficulty will be linked to No HP regen.

  • Arcshine will not have a rain bonus to appear and the previous rain bonus will be applied always instead

Fixes

  • Fixed ghost item in the Bank with certain swaps (thx @HaycheGee)

  • Fixed horses able to be called during a Boss battle (thx @DAS_leo)

Oppidum is Steam Deck Verified!

As you may already know, we put a lot of effort into developing a specific native Linux version of Oppidum for Steam Deck, and now, it's verified!
The game is running on Deck at solid 30 fps without any issues. As additional information:

  • We set Medium quality by default on Steam Deck (you can change it anytime)
  • It's close to 60 fps in Low, but not solid 60 fps
  • It's close to 30 fps in Ultra, but not solid 30 fps
You can increase the fps to achieve your desired framerate by lowering the render quality (we use FSR3, so it will still look great).

A world hanging by a thread needs your help answer the call now, wherever you are!

Happy gaming!
Let us know what you think, ask us any questions you might have about the game on Deck, or even join us on Discord if that's something that would suit you! See you soon in Insule! The EP Games Team https://store.steampowered.com/app/2115760/Oppidum/

Patch Notes 1.0.3

Here we come again with interesting news! In case you don't know yet, we've kept working hard listening and helping the community with problems and doubts about our game, Oppidum. (We invite you to join our Discord if you haven't yet!) Some of the most common issues have been inventory space, fishing and doubts about certain items that were not clear how or where to obtain, so those are the things we tackled in this new patch.

Improvements

  • Increased effect of tired fish when fishing: after 30 seconds of fishing, the fish starts moving slower and is easier to catch, this effect is what has been increased
  • Added an accessible mode for Fishing, linked to the Single-Press Controls Setting
  • Added two of the unlockable inventory slots to the beginning of the adventure, making the corresponding quests to unlock now just one slot instead of two upon their completion
  • New dialogue lines to explain better some very FAQs about items

Fixes

  • Fixed a rare error related to lag that could lead to an item appearing duplicated in bank and inventory, but it wasnt really there
We'll keep working to bring you the smoothest possible experience! Your support is very much appreciated. See you in Insule! The EP Games Team

Patch Notes 1.0.2

At EP Games we don't stop: thanks to the awesome community that you are growing, mostly on our Discord, we've detected and fixed some little issues. We've been able to help you in between patches to fix some of the problems that we could immediately fix due to being an online game, but that's also thanks to you, scouts, who have been actively helping us understand what was troubling you and letting us access your game to help you continue with the adventure without further issues. You've been playing for long hours and enjoying the adventure Insule has for you, either solo, with friends or even both! (we know you are making good use of the three slots available!), but there was an achievement you couldn't get just yet: get ready, download the new patch and jump into action!

Improvements

  • Improved the video memory footprint
  • Added a Visual hint for Treasure Finder in compass so it does not depend exclusively on audio hint
  • Removing building or Moving building now allows to move / remove more buildings without need to enter the UI again until you cancel the action

  • Configurable zoom for gamepad (when using mouse, this can be changed anytime with the mouse wheel)

Fixes

  • Added 2 missing chests that were necessary for the Sharp Explorer achievement
  • Fixed jump attack sticking the character between two enemies
  • Minor bug fixes
We appreciate your support and hope you can keep enjoying Oppidum! See you in Insule! The EP Games Team

Incoming patch with new world settings

It's been just one day after release, but at EP Games we never stop! We are committed to our communities and our players, and so:

First day small patches:

During the first hours, many people played the game for looooong sessions in all platforms (not only Steam, but also PlayStation and Xbox). We received beautiful feedback, as well as specific and helpful reports of small bugs that we fixed over the night (we are based in Europe). A little group reported crashes opening the game or on the first screen, but that was solved as well.

So, what's next?

Well, we keep working on supporting our growing community, listening to players' feedback and fixing anything that arises. Some of you got in touch with us to give feedback about how much travelling there's at the beginning, or how difficult it was for you to find some items. We developed Oppidum with a lot of options so each player could exactly enjoy it as they pleased. Because of that, in the following days we are adding:

New world settings:

  • Show distance in the compass markers
  • Unlimited use of Travelling Scrolls
These options won't be enabled by default, but you will be able to change them from World Settings so the game keeps adapting to your gameplay style. Apart from that, we are also adding:

New video options:

  • Vibrance
  • Brightness
  • Bloom (on/off)
  • Depth of Field (on/off)
  • Hidden hotkey to disable UI (control + H)
Thank you for your feedback and interest in seeing Oppidum growing. See you in Insule (or Discord) The EP Games Team

Dev Update #10 - 2024 wrapped up for Oppidum

Hey scouts!

We hope everything's looking festive wherever you are at the moment. If not, don't worry, we're bringing you plenty of reasons to celebrate. Since we're closing another year, we thought it would be a good time to give you a little recap of everything we have accomplished in 2024 during the development of Oppidum. So jump in our time machine and let's get to it

A big shoutout to our community

Back in January we got our Discord community together to have a private beta with our most loyal followers. We really enjoyed watching them play, learning their impressions and getting their feedback to improve upon a demo that was available during Steam Next Fest. Thanks to all the feedback we received, we were able to improve the game and get it to where it is today. It's really amazing for us to watch people that are excited to play Oppidum, who look forward to it. So we wouldn't want to miss our chance to send a big shoutout to our Discord community, always ready to offer their support, and give you a reminder to join and help our little family grow larger

The living world of Oppidum

Oppidum takes place in an island called Insule, blooming with magic and wildlife. So of course, it was only natural that we took our time to make it look and feel right. We made sure to fill Insule with important landmarks, interesting spots to explore and places you will visit either by chance, or guided by the expansive story of the game. We want you to get familiar with this land, from the Gusty Hill to the Wetlands of Murmurs.
However Insule is not only a lush island, but a dangerous one as well. There are many perils waiting in your path for which you will have to be prepared. Around this time of the year (that is roughly April) we finished programming and integrating the first version of every enemy in the game, which was a huge milestone! Every enemy has their own special abilities or strategies needed to defeat them, so they will offer you a challenge and keep you on your toes.
Soon after, we integrated the weather system, to fully immerse you into the natural cycles of Insule. Personally, I think this added a lot of ambience to Oppidum, and we took the time to put a small video together showing you how this feels! [previewyoutube=tZAeKZyY6-Y;full]https://youtube.com/watch?v=tZAeKZyY6-Y[/previewyoutube] And last but not least, Insule is more than its biomes and its dangers. It's also its people! NPCs started looking better than ever, and showing their full range of personality after we implemented animations and let them interact with their surroundings.

Time to showcase our progress

Since the game was improving so much, we needed to do something about how we presented it to the outside world. For example, the Steam store was looking a bit outdated. So we jumped into the game, snapped a few pics and dressed it properly with some new videos and screenshots. Here's how some of them compared:

And we couldn't have chosen a better time, since around this time, we got featured in a couple of articles from some important media outlets like PC Gamer, IGN and 3DJuegos! We were beyond excited about these articles which, among other things, highlighted this extended gameplay video you can also watch on our Steam page. [previewyoutube=zIbEWgEwJ1w;full][/previewyoutube]

A plethora of new things for the game

At this point after Summer, we had a more than solid base, so it was time to start polishing and adding every extra feature we still hadn't had the chance to put into the game. For full context, here's a small comparison showcasing a small part of the work we had done from February 2023 to October 2024. [previewyoutube=RksXJEfwuDw;full][/previewyoutube] We took this time to include extra, but important features, such as fishing, horse-riding, and an improvement of our character customization, aside from many other things we're keeping hush hush for now

So what's next for 2025?

Well... you'll have to keep an eye on us and see for yourself! We're at a polishing phase, integrating anything that's left and working hard on some big marketing pushes until release. Speaking of which... Oppidum is set to be released during the first quarter of 2025 we will give some more definitive information in the future, once we're confident in a date, but we hope this gives you something to look forward to in 2025. At this stage, we need your help more than we ever did. If you enjoyed this little recap of 2024, consider sharing it with friends, your favorite streamers, or post it to your socials, so others can also get excited about our progress and join the family. They're more than welcome to join our Discord as well! In the meantime, we'll keep working on it and sharing our process with you And as a final send-off for this update, we want to leave you with a little tease of a new feature were working on. Any guesses on what this could be about? We think it will give you the opportunity to exhibit your knack for discovery
From the EP Games team, we wish you a really Happy New Year!

Dev Update #9 - Approaching the finishing line

Hey scouts!

We present you with a most ceremonious "boo " from us. Contrary to what the season would demand from us, we are NOT here to scare you. We only bring the good stuff here. We're approaching the finishing line of the development of Oppidum. Yes, it's real, it's happening! We haven't been exactly quiet about it, but it's time we gear up for the release, which is happening sooner than you might think. While we still keep it shush for now, let's talk about a few things in the meantime.

So... what about a demo?

Given the recent Next Fest, we want to address the topic of demos and why you haven't seen one in a while. Development on Oppidum is going really well and has been since we started. We're incredibly happy with how far we've come in roughly two years of work. We've found a pace that works for us, and we're pushing hard to maintain it so you can play Oppidum as soon as possible. However, this also means that shifting our focus to anything else would likely disrupt that momentum. Releasing a demo for an open-world game like ours would require reallocating resources toward its development. We want to provide the best experience possible, and that means polishing everything in the demo, preparing to address any issues you encounter, and ensuring a smooth experience overall. In short, we'd have to pause core development and focus entirely on a small section of Oppidum for the demo. On top of that, we're also considering how to select the best portion of the game to represent the full Oppidum experience. Does this mean there will never be another demo or beta test? Absolutely not. We're still exploring ways to let you try Oppidum in its current state. The game is already a delight for fans of survival, adventure, and story-rich experiences. We're still adding the final touches, since Oppidum will have a full-release. For those of you who were worried about an early-access, you can stop worrying now! Rest assured, we're committed to finding solutions. We're beyond excited for you to play the game. In the meantime, here's a comparison showing how Oppidum looked in early 2023 versus how it looks now, so you can see what our development process has achieved. We hope you're as excited about it as we are. [previewyoutube=RksXJEfwuDw;full][/previewyoutube]

Less talk, more show

I'll admit that was a really long wall of text, so let me compensate that, and show you a few bits of newly added stuff, so I can further prove my point for our working philosophy: We've changed the look of the water! [previewyoutube=moLKau12kmc;full][/previewyoutube] There's a whole new swamp area.
We've rehashed every hairstyle in the game and added the option to choose two colors.
Let's not forget horses!

How long until release?

That's a great question, and were almost ready to answer it! In fact, were working on an announcement that will give you the details, and we want to do it right, with plenty of fireworks. So, if you havent already, now is the perfect time to join our Discord, spread the word about the game, and invite your friends to join the community! In the meantime, we're gonna get right back at work. We once again want to thank you for your support, and for getting this far with us. We can't wait to share the world of Oppidum with all of you! See you soon!

Dev Update #8 - The most spoilery devlog so far

Hey scouts!

How have you been? We hope the past month treated you well and that you found time to enjoy it in your own way. Now, we're excited to share some fresh updates on what we've been working on. We're deep into the advanced stages of development, focusing on implementing the final features and mechanics, while also refining what's already in place. This devlog is a bit more exclusive than usual, offering a sneak peek into some things that aren't quite ready to fully reveal. But we wanted to give our dedicated community a first look, as your ongoing support means the world to us. Let's dive in!

This is a bait title

And Im not entirely kidding! Reel in your excitement because today, were diving intofishing! Weve been dangling the bait for months, and now were thrilled to announce thatfishing is officially part of the game! The primary purpose of fishing will be to use your catches as ingredients for muffins that temporarily boost your stats. But thats not all, as there are other uses you'll discover as you play.

There will be different spots to cast your fishing rod, with different types of fish. Not every rod will be useful for every spot, or every fish While were still fine-tuning the animations and effects, we wanted to give you a first look at the UI for the fishing minigame. In this clip I'm using the begginer's fishing rod, which is the first rod you'll obtain in the game:

Wait... there are cinematics?!

Bet you didn't see this one coming! Yeah,Oppidum is going to have some cinematicsto give you some context about what's going on in the game. For that, we've chosen some unique artstyle to evoke a narrated story, almost like a tale. Shh, technically I'm not exactly allowed to show you the cinematic, but I might sneak ina few secondsto give you something to look forward to. Keep in mind that this is anexclusive, early sneak peek for you. What you see is a work in progress, so it will differ from what will be in the final game. Take a look! [previewyoutube=eqGvgznWyfk;full][/previewyoutube]

Challenging battles ahead

A while ago, I shared some details about the bosses you'll face in Oppidum. We've been hard at work on their encounters, making sure they'll be as memorable and epic as possible. I mentioned before that these battles will be challenging, and what's a challenge without a bit of spectacle, right? Rest assured, we're pouring our efforts into the VFX for these enemies, ensuring their fights will be unforgettable. Here you can see a small glimpse at the first boss you will face, with its effects already into place to ensure a menacing fight! Be mindful that this video spoils most of the battle against the first boss, so watch at your own discretion! [previewyoutube=ivvUIcEt-Ow;full][/previewyoutube] Thanks for sticking with us through this update! What are you most excited about? Whether its the new fishing mechanics, cinematic teasers, or epic boss battles, wed love to hear your thoughts. Join us on Discord or follow us on social media to share your excitement. Were getting closer and closer to the finish line, and the entire team is thrilled to see Oppidum coming together. We cant wait for you to finally dive in and experience everything weve been working on. The anticipation is building, and soon enough, youll be able to explore it all firsthand. See you next time!

Dev Update #7 - New screenshots and media coverage

Hey scouts! By the guardians, summer has finally hit us with all its strength, and we're longing to take a swim at Litore's beach. Who's joining us? Another thing that comes with summer is usually a wardrobe update. Well, in our case we decided to go with a different kind of update, and give our Steam page a fresh coat of paint. We also have some exciting news to share, so let me tell you all about it

We updated our screenshots, and here's why!

One of the things we had been meaning to do for a while is to update the screenshots on our Steam store to better show off how the game looks currently, much closer to what you'll see when it's released. The previous screenshots had been taken at a very early stage of the game's development, back when we launched the store around a year ago. We've tried to keep the spirit of the previous screenshots, while also introducing new stuff that we've been implementing into the game. I think we did a pretty good job!
Our first enemy screenshot looked cool and dynamic, but the effects, posture, and even some of the items were outdated. We decided to take the opportunity to show a more exciting battle by implying higher stakes. We also know how important it is for the user to see what the game actually looks like when you play it, which is why we kept the interface. You might also notice some post-processing effects on the old pic, which are not included in the new one. We added those manually for the placeholders, as we considered them for the final game, but we're still on the fence about it. Do you think we should still give it a try?
This is a funny one. Multiplayer has always been one of the top features we wanted to define our game, so we implemented it pretty early on. However, at this point in the development, there wasn't much to do! We definitely wanted to let you know about the resource gathering in the game, but our new screenshot also lets you know what you can do with those resources. You can see one player chopping wood, while the other processes that wood at the lumber mill... also built with gathered resources! This was a neat chance to show off the buildable camp, different equipment, and other activities, like tending to your crops.
Narrative is a huge part of our game, bigger than it usually is for most survival games, so including some dialogue and characters was essential. Obviously, a lot of quests and storylines are dependent on the features that are included in the game, so at the time we didn't have a lot to work with. This was probably the most placeholder-y image of the bunch. The dialogue, the NPC, and even the camera angle as you see them there are not present in the current version of the game. We also thought it would be a good opportunity to introduce, arguably, the most important character aside from yourself, our best boy Kay, and give a small glimpse of the main quest and the places it will take you to.
Last but not least, in spite of the BIG CLUB and all of the spiky rocks, it's hard to deny that almost any monster looks scarier at night. And you should be scared of them. It's a good moment to remind you that the game has a day and night cycle, displaying a more than appropriate enemy to haunt you in the dark. But also, its a very good chance to show off the different enemy types you'll be facing in the game, their effects, animations, and even their attached mechanics. See the chest theyre defending? That's your reward if you manage to get past them. Good luck! There are even more new screenshots on the store, so do go over there and take a good look at them. Wed love to hear your opinion.

We got some media coverage!

Yesss, we're pretty excited about this! We've been featured in a few articles from some big media outlets. Looks like Oppidum is getting some attention, and people are liking what they're seeing. PC Gamer was the first article we noticed, followed by IGN and 3DJuegos! Not gonna lie, I'm loving this kind of attention and hoping that it will only snowball from here If you take a look at the articles, do tell us what you think about them. Little-known (not really) secret about the video game industry: getting attention is hard, and you need to work hard for it, so of course we're pumped about this. Here's hoping you get to see us featured again in the near future! By the way, weve also included a longer-than-usual gameplay video on our Steam page and YouTube channel, which we think might have helped make people notice us. In this video, we show a section of the game and how it feels to play it. Take a look! [previewyoutube=zIbEWgEwJ1w;full][/previewyoutube] Thats our dose of exciting stuff for today. I hope you join us in celebrating achievements like this, and keep giving us your support! See you for the next update!

Dev Update #6 - Dynamic weather, NPC behaviours and scrolls

Hey scouts!

Does anyone else feel like summer is closing in? Just me? Temperatures are rising over here, and it looks like we're in need of something to keep ourselves comfy and hydrated. So let's talk about different ways in which we're making the world of Oppidum more immersive. Here we go!

Mind the weather

I hope you're as excited as me about this. We've implemented a weather system into Oppidum! If you're one to enjoy nature as its fullest, then you will surely appreciate the atmosphere meteorological changes bring to the experience. Of course, rain is the most obvious example There's a whole different ambience when rain pours over Insule, as you get to enjoy its sights and sounds. There's more to it than a simple effect, however! You will be able to tell the forecast for the following hours of the day straight from your UI:
What did you say? Ain't nobody have time for that? Don't worry, the rain still won't be able to catch you unprepared. If you notice the day getting gloomier out of a sudden, you might want to look up! How do the clouds look? You'll be able to tell straight away if it's gonna start raining soon! No need to water your crops

And of course, no weather system is complete without some intimidating stormy effects! But don't take my word for it, and have a look instead at this video we've prepared showcasing some of the weather effects of Oppidum: [previewyoutube=tZAeKZyY6-Y;full][/previewyoutube]

When the storm clears up

But calm comes after the storm, and we want to make sure you're not the only one enjoying a clear sky after the tempest. As you can see in the video above, inhabitants of Insule now will occasionally stretch their legs and take a stroll! No more standing in the same spot (unless that's actually their job, I guess!) Other characters will behave in more natural ways than before, interacting with their surrounding, changing places, or maybe just finding the best possible spot to dig a good hole without ruining the lawn.

Let's get back home

And to do so, we're gonna close up the devlog with some new cool mechanic that will make your life much easier. See this scroll? There are different types to discover on your adventure, but let's focus on this one for a moment.
Just use it from your inventory and...
Yup! This scroll will instantly return you to your camp, so whether your sleepy, need to drop a few items on your storage or need to craft a new sword to fight some foes, this will make the process much easier. I'm gonna let you guess what other types of scrolls you might encounter

See you next time!

Thanks once again for sticking with me until the end. How does the weather system look? You can join us on Discord or follow us on social media to let us know your thoughts about what youve seen today. Id also like to remind you that Oppidum offers an experience that can be enjoyed either as a single player, or with some friends! Do you have anyone in mind you would like to share it with? Were more than happy to welcome anyone into the community and it helps us a great deal. In any case, I hope you guys have a great rest of the week, and see you for the next update!

The fate of a marvelous world depends on you. Will you live up to the challenge?

Explore the land of Insule, discover every resource it has to offer and collect it to craft your equipment in classic survival-crafting fashion.

Everything you do in Oppidum will help you achieve your ultimate goal

You've been summoned to the island of Insule as its last hope. Every battle you fight, every item you craft and every inhabitant you help will put you closer to that goal: saving this magical world from its corrupted fate.

Link neighbors to each other and restore a divided land to their former bonds

The corruption crawled its way into a divided society. Meet a diverse cast of characters, assist them and let them teach you about the ways of Insule. By earning their trust, you will also help them regain their own trust in each other.

Your camp is your refuge and base of operations; craft, rest and get ready for the next adventure.

Everything begins and ends at your camp, where you will craft equipment, construct buildings, tend to your crops and animals or cook energizing meals. Earn new blueprints for useful structures, or simply decorate it to make it feel like home.

Don't let your guard down on an island driven mad by the corruption.

As you push through Insule, the corrupted island will show its fangs back at you. Arm yourself with weapons and armors to emerge victorious of every challenge. Hunt for resources, defend yourself and seek the guidance of the Protectors.

Gather and take advantage of Tamai, the root of all things on Insule

Everything in Insule is sustained by Tamai, an energy unique to the land, the same that has brought you to it. You will feel its presence all around, and it will prove essential once you learn how to gather it.

The weight of a prophecy lies on your shoulders, but you don't have to carry it alone. Enjoy Oppidum as a solo adventure, or with up to 3 other players.

Your friends will be summoned to Insule along with you. Turn this tale into a cooperative adventure to save the land. Venture into the woods, swamps and caves with your friends, collaborate to build your camp and complete quests together.
