HexDefense Full Release!

The launch update brings:


  • New enemies
  • A new boss
  • New Items
  • Achievements
  • And more!

New Enemies!


A new enemy den has been added, the fairy circle, that spawns fairies and tree golems! Other minor enemies have been added to many of the other dens, as well as now dens can spawn enemies who call other dens home. (like a beehive spawning a bear!)

New Items!


New items and new item effects have been added as well as achievements for unlocking each one!

World Buffs!


Now when you defeat an enemy boss, all enemies will receive a buff for a short duration. Currently there are only 5 different buffs but others are coming!

Boss Rush!


Now at the 30 minute mark and at 15 minute intervals afterwards, all eligible dens will spawn their respective boss! Surviving the boss rush is difficult but will yield gold and items!

Final update before launch!

This update was focused mostly on balance changes:


  • All towers received tweaks to their cost as well as their upgrade costs and upgrade boost amounts
  • Slightly lowered time between enemy spawns
  • Changed how the armor damage threshold increases
  • Shield and armor now increase in amount as time goes on
  • Changed some enemy's attributes to create a larger difference between them:
    • Bees are more numerous and fast but have smaller health pools
    • Cacti have larger health pools but slower regeneration
    • Mushrooms regen shield and health very quickly
    • ...with more to come!

Other stuff:


  • Decreased the size of enemy health bars on screen
  • Artillery now shoots a projectile
  • Fixed an issue causing the spotted damage modifier not being used in the calculation to determine if armor is damaged

This is the final update before the 1.0 full release!


Things you can expect in the full release:


  • MANY more items
  • Several new enemy types
  • World events that can affect both towers and enemies
  • and if time permits: a new tower or two!

I do plan on updating the game after release. I will post my plans for future updates along with the release post!

Steam Deck Compatibility!

HexDefense is now compatible with Steam Deck! Until this is verified by Valve, there is a step that has to be taken to get it running: On your Steam Deck go to the properties tab for HexDefense and under compatibility check the box that says "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool." A dropdown will appear where you will check either "Steam Linux Runtime 3.0 (Sniper)" or "Steam Linux Runtime 1.0 (Scout)." After that you are ready to play HexDefense on your Steam Deck! Happy Defending!

Minor Patch Notes 6/18/2024

  • Added new targeting priority for shields and armor: "has." an enemy with 1 or 100 shield will be treated as equal with this priority.
  • Added new models to Bee Queen, Bee Guard, Bee Worker, Mushroom and Cactus Golems, And the Necromancer.
  • Status effects are now only applied on successful hits
  • Minor optimization to enemies to reduce lag when many are on screen

Major Update: June 10th, 2024

Hello everyone! After taking a bit of a break I am back to working on HexDefense with a goal of releasing a 1.0 version in July! This update has some major changes:

  • UI has had a major redesign with the goal of removing much of the onscreen clutter
  • Map generation and how the enemy dens and paths spawn have had a major overhaul to decrease the number of enemies on screen at one time
  • Towers for the most part are unchanged outside of balancing changes as well as now having 3 different targeting priorities. If for example the first priority is set to "Least Armor" and there are two enemies with 0 armor in range, the tower will then choose based on what the second priority is set to.
  • Items now have three rarities
  • Enemies now have a different health system: shields, armor, and health. To damage shields simply hit the enemy with any damage type other than DOT. Armor must be hit hard to be damaged, the damage amount required is in the top right, next to the currency value.
  • Some enemies now have abilities, for example some will run faster for a short period of time after taking their first point of damage.
  • Many bosses have been added, all with their own abilities and required strategy to defeat.
In the coming weeks as I push towards 1.0 release you can expect the following:
  • More towers!
  • More items!
  • More enemies!
  • More balance changes and fixes!
  • and more all-around polish!

HexDefense is a roguelike tower defense with an emphasis on constant action with little to no downtime. Defend your city by building towers, upgrading them with money from your fallen foes, and equipping them with strange items you find while scouting the world in an attempt to stop the endless assault!

Where are they coming from?
Once they have found you they do not stop! Scout in the direction that the enemies are attacking you from in an attempt to find their source and to have some warning when something really nasty is headed your way!

Upgrade and equip
Upgrade and equip towers with items to increase the chances that your vain attempt to survive is successful! While upgrading is a great way to increase a tower's damage output, it quickly becomes expensive. A judiciously placed item can save you when all else fails! But be careful, towers can only have a certain number of items and once an item is equipped to a tower it cannot be removed.
