Janosik 2 picks up right after the events of the first game. The famed Slovakian highlander and robber Janosik just finished a quest to rescue his comrades and is now on the path to defeat even more enemies – both mythical and historical. This time around, it’s not the band of brothers that’s missing, but rather Janosik himself. Caught with an ingenious ruse, our hero must rescue himself, his beloved and make new friends on the way.
STORY
Accompany Highlander Janosik, Bogdan the Werewolf, and a cloak-wrapped Vampire Hugo on a rescue mission to save Janka, who was captured by evil Baron de Blonde. Trek through dense mountain forests that are home to feral dogs, headless skeletons, and more, all bent on making your life harder. Bear in mind though, that there might be something even more sinister waiting for you at the end of the journey...
A bigger adventure
Much bigger levels filled to the brink with new characters, enemies and environmental threats, and traversal options.
The Good, The Not so Bad, The not really Ugly...and Janka
Four playable characters with unique abilities that complement each other, making the gameplay more fun and diverse
Die, Die and Repea...die Again
Lightning-quick reflexes, good muscle memory, and thinking two steps ahead will sadly - not be enough to finish Janosik in one sitting. But at least the checkpoints are plentiful and restarts - instantaneous
Is This A Joke to You?
A highlander, a vampire, and a werewolf enter a dungeon... and emerge - hopefully - with the Highlander's rescued bride while meeting, fighting, and defeating everyone and everything that stands in your way
Scenes That Cut
Enjoy the short breaks in an exhilarating experience by admiring the cutscenes that signify important events of Janosik, beautifully presented in all their full, 100+colors, hand-drawn, and animated glory. You will never skip a cutscene featuring a mountable sheep again
All is well that ends well!
Did we mention 3 different endings? Choices and actions made throughout your journey will shape the fate of Janosik and his companions.
Hey, Adventurers!
In the last Dev Update weve talked about music being your companion throughout the game, anywhere you go, the music is there. Today wed like to share more details about the pixel-art and cinematics that are present in Janosik 2, and spill some tea about their creation process.
Creating Sprites and Backgrounds
Janosik 2s visuals are a love letter to classic games, combining retro pixel art with fresh animation techniques. The games sprites and backgrounds were drawn by hand, one pixel at a time in Aseprite. To keep the vibe of old-school platformer, Marcin used a limited color palette and focused on clean, and readable designs. The final pixel-art is simple, yet vibrant and expressive, mixing modern animations with retro charm.

Rotoscoping Magic
All cinematic sequences in Janosik 2 were created using the rotoscoping technique. This process involved recording short video clips of desired animation sequences, which were later redrawn frame-by-frame in Aseprite. Every movement - from running and weapons swings, to more complex gestures - was first recorded to make the animations as precise as possible. By doing so, Marcin was able to achieve smooth and lifelike animations, which are hard to achieve while drawing pixel art. Its a bit like creating a flipbook, but with each pixel carefully placed in the sequence.

Thanks to rotoscoping and hand-drawing all pixel art, Janosik 2 is a game that feels both familiar and fresh, combining smooth, lifelike animations with the charm of classic pixel art. Every scene, movement, and background element was crafted with a dedication to detail and an appreciation for the art form, creating an experience that, we hope, will appeal to fans of pixel art and newcomers alike.

For those curious about the pixel art in a distinctly different setting check out Undead Westa gritty, black-and-white pixel adventure set in a haunted Wild West. Where Janosik 2 brings bright colors and lifelike rotoscoped animation, Undead West goes old-school with a bold, 2-bit palette inspired by classics like Downwell and Minit. Its a different kind of retro: stark, shadowy, and packed with western action.
