Weary travellers, the simplified Chinese demo will be coming soon!
It's our first attempt at localization, so we're hoping you'll test it out and give us feedback and suggestions, so we can make it the best we can.
Thanks!

The achievement "I choose violence" was not triggering, now it should be. If you do not have it, even though you fulfilled the conditions, try starting a fresh run and it should trigger. Dyslexic font was causing a few pieces of text to go out of screen bounds. We gave it a good talking to. It understands the errors of its ways. The guide has been updated. Now the way is open for "I choose violence", "smug-face", and "lover". Use the guide at your own peril. What has been seen cannot be unseen. -Ze
We did it, people!
The Expanded Edition finally out!
New art, new sounds, new edit, new text, we touched up basically everything in the original game. As it is now, the game is as close to our vision as we're physically capable of manifesting.
Here is a teaser of a few thing we worked on:
The demo of the game is updated as well. We hope everything works. It should work, but if you have any issues, do let us know.
Note: do not use the saves from the old version. It is a bad idea. Bad. Baaaaaaaaad. If you have some progress saved from earlier, you should go to options and wipe it with a button at bottom right corner.
We also launched a collection of artworks for the aficionados among you, as well as an updated soundtrack with new music from the Expanded Edition, all in lossless FLAC format for the best listening experience.
Later we will be editing Story and Tea with Ilar so it's up to par with the Expanded Edition, and updating this pack with it. If you like the artworks in the game, then this is the best way to see them in ultra high resolution, all the while supporting us in our spirited but misguided adventures in game development.
Speaking of support, we will also be revamping the way we put out content for our patreon and ko-fi backers, so that they get more exclusive content than they have been.
Now go and play the new version have fun, lick salts, listen to eyed daggers, or what have you.

We're aware that some players are experiencing an issue where steam doesn't actually download the game but says it has, and obviously won't run the game either. (Steam, why you gotta be like this)
We are working on the issue. Please bear with us.

You should be able to play the expanded edition now. While we were putting the game out, we had a few issues related to how much content was changed. Renpy and steam don't seem to play nice together(?) We recommend you take these steps before playing to have the best experience: 1. Completely reinstall the game: [olist]
Nov 7th is the date, mark it. Do you know what we said to ourselves when we started the kickstarter for the Expanded Edition? We were building some gameplay systems for The Hunger the next big game in the Taldun universe, and it was hard work. We said: "Boy, this thing is gonna take years, and it's already burning us out. We should do a small thing, quick-like, as a break. What if we made a definitive/director's cut of The Remainder? Shouldn't take us long, right? Four months should do it? Six tops?" Fast forward to fourteen months later, we're finally going to launch it. I recently learned about a rule of production planning: Take what you think a project will need, and multiply it by pi, and you'll get the actual time you'll spend. The math checks out. Let's see just exactly how much we expanded the game, shall we? It started at around 145,000 words, now it is 171,000. Some of this is new deaths, some are new ending variations, and some just generally fleshing out things that were too thin or adding more flavour and interest in what we found to be bland. Now it should be a feast through and through. On top of that, we pretty much re-wrote the entire thing over via several editing passes. We added five new artworks, revised around twenty a few of which significantly, composed four more ambient tracks, and added 467 unique sound effects. Because of how much we feel the experience has been improved, we're raising the price to us$27.99. This will not affect those who already own the game. Once the digital release is out, we will start producing the physical art, the prints, linocuts, CDs, and original artworks. It will likely be another few months before all those are done and shipped out. After that we're onto the next story: Chronicles of Taldun - The Longing. If you liked The Remainder, you should, probably, wish-list that.
Greetings weary travelers, I hope you're faring well on your journey.
It's been a few weeks since the successful KS campaign for CoTTR's expanded edition, and we've got some updates to keep you sated until the new edition comes out!
Since we're most comfortable with art, we decided to get into some re-works of existing artwork to get us into the mood for the whole project.
We noticed that Ilar's face looked somewhat...varied across different illustrations in the game. I would like to blame it on the nature of magick, being based on Waters and fluid and all that, but it's actually just because we couldn't quite get their likeness from different angles right.
To remedy this, we asked them to sit for a few portrait photos so we wrap our eager tendrils around their illusive anatomy.
(Translation: we created a 3D sculpture of Ilar's head so we can see it from various angles.)
With this, we can adjust the existing illustrations, here are a few in progress.
And a few that are finished.
And when it comes time to make new illustrations, we'll have an easier time of it. We've hit the funding goals for 2-3 reworks, but with this workflow, we could squeeze in several more reworks where the only thing to be improved is Ilar's likeness, so you'll have those to look forward to.
The next steps will be to begin editing the text, sketch out new scenes to be added, and producing the writing and art for those scenes.
You can rest assured we'll be throwing out updates whenever we have something appetizing on our hands.
If you've been to our discord server, you'll know that we have a horrid time keeping anything to ourselves, and are constantly filling the servers with a deluge of updates, chitchats, and general good-natured nonsense. So if you'd like to really get into the thick of our development, then that's where you'd want to be. Here's a portal: https://discord.gg/PgZASVhN7E
If you missed the campaign, you can still make a late pledge on backerkit: https://the-remainder-expanded-edition.backerkit.com/hosted_preorders
That's it for now, take care and we'll talk again real soon.

We are happy to announce our next project Chronicles of TalDun: The Longing!
It is a kinetic visual novel. The story takes place several millennia before The Remainder, in the time of Lura.
The world of Tal'Dun is shaped by mysterious forces of the Seas, a power that gives and takes life. Touching its Waters brings death to most people, but in rare cases some survive it and become magi. Evin and Near come from very different circumstances, one grew up in a tiny village and stumbled upon magick by accident, and the other was born with it and spent their life locked away in a temple. Despite this, as if pulled together by the currents of the Seas, their paths cross, and now a storm is brewing.
The story features things you already know and love about CoTTR:
-Deep and Expansive World Building
-Gorgeous Hand Drawn Art
-Mature, Emotional Story
-Complex Characters
-Tangible Mood and Atmosphere
We are currently releasing one free chapter every other Sunday on itch.io - you can find it here.
Once the game is complete, a paid version will be published on Steam as well.
For those who want the story early and to support our development effort, we are publishing one chapter every Sunday for supporters who pledge $5 and above on our ko-fi and patreon
You will of course also receive all the other benefits of being a supporter, so go ahead and check out our patreon or ko-fi if you haven't.
Happy Holidays weary traveler! We've fixed a few more bugs for your narrative pleasure. List of fixes:
Greetings weary traveler, CoTTR is receiving a minor update with some new content and fixes. List of changes:
Dear weary traveler, in case you were stuck in the Near Shallows for the last few months, CoT2 had been in development for the last few months!
Here's another small fix.
Here's another small fix.
Hello! Another week, another small update. What was fixed?
This is a story of two magi, Vyn and Ilar, who find themselves trapped in a collapsing tower with their only hope for salvation being a difficult ritual. Or at least that is what Ilar tells you. The thing is - you don’t remember anything, and Ilar’s story makes less and less sense the closer you are to the ritual. Are they hiding things to protect you from the bitter truth, or are they deceiving you for some more nefarious reason?
Guide Vyn’s actions to death and beyond and uncover Ilar’s truth. Are they your colleague, lover or something completely different? Read between the lines of what they are telling you, explore your surroundings for clues and use hands-on deduction to break the vicious circle and set them free.
172 000 words or 8-40 hours of bittersweet suffering.
Over 500 choices, some more regrettable than others.
Around 50 false and 3 true endings. (It's not all bad, we promise)
A pretty nonbinary silver-tongued smug-face who might or might not murder you.
Yes, you do get to bone them, or get boned by them.
But you don't have to if that's not your thing.
A magnificent cat who cares not if you live or die.
An adorable eel friend.
Death. Lots of it.
An angry potato.
