Cards of the Abyss

Somewhere between Slay the Spire and Dofus, Cards of the Abyss is a roguelike tactical deckbuilder set in the heart of an ancient Abyss.

Awaken in the depths of a forgotten world and descend ever deeper into the Abyss - a gigantic chasm carved out by a vanished civilization. Control a lone hero on a battle grid, dodge enemy attacks and chain card combos to survive... and reveal the secrets of a petrified past.

A Movement Based Deckbuilder

In Cards of the Abyss, cards control your movement as well as your attacks. Positioning, anticipation and sequencing are essential to triumph.

Enemies reveal their intentions in advance: it's up to you to adapt your strategy to avoid attacks, interact with objects on the ground, exploit opposing Tactical Zones triggered by movement... and unleash devastating combos at just the right moment.

A Procedural Abyss

Each run is divided into three acts, each with its own enemies, bosses, events and rewards. Each act is made up of procedurally generated nodes:

  • Battles

  • Elite

  • Treasures

  • Events with multiple choices

  • Shops

  • Campfires

  • And of course... a Boss!

Special Mini-Biomes may appear, bringing unique modifiers to the environment: burning terrain, gold mines, plant invasions... as well as much more tempting rewards!

Build, Adapt, Master

Choose from hundreds of cards, upgrade them, and evolve your deck as you fight. Find powerful synergies, unlock relics with profound effects, and experiment with multiple approaches for every situation.

Each playable character is different, offering a unique playing style and card pool. And through your runs, a persistent main quest will unlock new options, bonuses and mechanics over the long haul.

All the cards in the game feature an integrated GIF animation, which is triggered on hovering to visually illustrate their effect - making even the most obscure effects crystal clear.

A Civilization Frozen In Mana

The Abyss was once a refuge built by the Ancients to survive the Eruption. But their hope of one day awakening was shattered when the Clepsydra, the source of resurrection, was destroyed.

Since then, their people have been frozen, Crystallised forever.

Today, new creatures, altered by the magical energy of the place, haunt the depths. Guided by the telepathic voice of Nyssara, an ancestral dragon, you are the only one who can descend to the bottom of the abyss... and perhaps rekindle the Clepsydra.

This is the big one!

With the Steam Page launch, I am dropping the largest update ever! Packed with new content, polish, and surprises. Lets dive in!

News

Music & SFX arrive!

Around 20 brand new tracks have been added!

Each Arc now has its own battle themes, with unique tracks for Elites and Bosses! Youll also hear fresh music for the Lore Nodes, the Main Menu, the Calamity and (soon!) the Shop.

On top of that, I have added 35+ new sound effects, making fights, cards, and events feel far more alive.

And yes, theres finally a Settings Menu where you can tweak volume sliders .

The Lore Node

This new node gives runs an overarching objective by unlocking Permanent Relics that persist across runs. Occasionally, itll also grant powerful one-time-only game-breaking rewards for your current run.

Dont worry: the roguelike spirit is alive and well. The focus remains on depth and complexity, not just raw power.

This is also your direct link with Nyssara, the Ancient Dragon youve already glimpsed, and the start of a coherent, lasting narrative that spans beyond a single run.

Currently: 12 quests with unique rewards.

Goal for release: around 45 quests, tied into a full storyline.

From now on, youll always encounter 3 Lore Nodes per Act.

Community-Chosen Characters!

The votes are in! Out of the 10 candidates, the community chose the Elementary Dancer and the Ash Gunner .

These two will be developed in a future patch, thanks for shaping the adventure with us!

Juice & Polish

Screen shakes, bloom, blur, post-processing effects, and tons of new animations are in.

Combined with the fresh SFX, everything now feels way more visceral, especially when you smack enemies for 10+ damage .

Cards can now be played twice (or more)!

The engine has been upgraded: cards can be played multiple times in a row.

This opens the door to crazy combos and synergy explosions.

The Unleashed Stalker gains a deadly new Lethal pool of cards, rewarding you for landing the finishing blow with your cards!

Improvements

The Ancient Font

All major titles now use the Ancient Font, which really captures the vibe of a lost civilization.

New fight backgrounds

13 new backgrounds are added. They are randomly picked at the start of fights, adding more visual variety.

New Logo

The game now rocks a shiny new logo!

Custom Cursor

Goodbye Windows default cursor hello, custom sprite!

The Action Line

Cards now create a colored action line from your hand to your cursor.

- Green = Movement

- Red = Actions

- Straight = Line of sight needed

- Curvy = No line of sight needed

Its practical and it looks slick .

Card Type Icons

Melee, Distance, Movement, Skill, and Power now each have distinct icons.

Subtypes like Steps and Lethals have been added too, paving the way for new strategies. Hover them for tooltips!

Wording

- Statuses now use natural durations (for 3 turns) instead of clunky phrasing (decrease by 1 at end of turn).

- Simplified text: `\[DRAW_SYMBOL]` now just means draw, without the unnecessary from a card.

Bug Fixes

- Tutorial tooltips no longer flip themselves.

- Goboom keeps attacking properly even after cancelling its attack with Bomb pickups.

- Card duplication no longer lets you exceed 10 cards in hand.

- Fixed the tooltips for all the cards.

Balancing & Redesign

Overall Balancing

- Fewer enemies spawn on turn 1, but more appear in later turns, to reduce early overwhelm.

- Reduced non-walkable tiles proportion from 10%.

- Community request: Keys now cost 0!

- Chests: 10 Invulnerability (up from 5).

- Red Shard can now attack beyond straight lines.

- Added a new secret invisible object in fights will you find it?

Card Balancing

- Teleporting Jump Salto: 0 Mana, Teleport 2.

- Forward Acrobatics: Cost 0 (down from 1).

- Backward Acrobatics: Now gives 2 Charge (up from 1).

- Go In And Out: Teleports 5 (up from 4).

- Shadow Step: Teleports 2 (instead of Move 1).

- Spectral Step: Teleports 3 (up from 2).

- Step cards now grant Steps first, then upgrade them.

- Viperine Cuts: now has Erosion.

- Metallic Brambles: all now have Erosion, but are slightly buffed.

- Hidden in the Boot: now has Retain + Erosion.

- Polyvalence: upgraded to Legendary (from Rare).

- Decisive Shot: 2+4 damage if youve picked an arrow this fight (instead of 1+5 this turn).

- Aim for the Heart: Redesigned! Distance, 0 Mana, 1 damage up to 3 range. Lethal: Gain 3 Tension.

- Roaming: Redesigned! Draw 1 from discard + draw 2 Steps.

- Perforating Salvo: Redesigned! Big 5-tile line AoE: 2 damage + 3 damage per other Distances in hand.

- Frontal Estocade: Redesigned! Teleport 4 in line. Attack 2. Lethal: Draw 2 Melees.

- Fist Darts: Redesigned (again)! Drops 2 arrows after your next Distance.

- Tense Strides: Redesigned! 3 Steps for 1 Mana (instead of 6 for 2).

Relic Balancing

- Holy Bomb Bombeline: now triggers on every kill during player turn.

- Remanence Arrowheads: grants 1 Magnetism (was 2).

Environment Balancing

- Bosses are stronger with more HP, but Calamity arrives later (turn 7 instead of 5).

- Goboom: 85 HP, 2 damage (up from 1).

- Rikiki: 75 HP, Pushes 3 tiles (up from 2).

- Normal enemies adjusted for tighter cost balance. The cost difference between the "bigger" and the "smaller" normal enemies is now closer.

- Assasnakes: Tactical Zone is now a line instead of a circle, HP 3 (down from 4).

- Geogolem: HP 3 (down from 4), lost the front tile of it's Tactical Zone.

- Fights now feature 12 enemy types max (no more everything at once fights).

- Elite fights: only enemies youve already defeated.

- Boss fights: always include their signature enemy (Bombelins for Goboom, Racrobats for Rikiki) + 1 defeated enemy type.

- Ritual Towers have 80% HP in Elite fights (balancing Elite strength).

Event Balancing

- Bottomless Well: card discoveries scale down the more you take.

- 1 among 12 (same)

- 2 among 5 (was 2 among 6)

- 3 among 3 (was 3 among 4)

- Ancient Sundial: tripling a card now costs 20 Gold (was 10).

- Start Event: more generous now gives 8 value points (was 4). Equivalent to 2 extra lives.

- Some rewards were overpriced in value fixed.
