Game Description

We have great news! Elementail is officially joining Steam Next Fest!

Weve been working hard to make Elementail even better and were gathering feedback from all of you, our new and future wizards.

New Monsters Revealed!

The mysterious monsters of Acts 2 and 3 are finally taking shape.

Our team spent a lot of time discussing what kind of monsters would make the game feel more diverse and how they could best complement Elementails core mechanics.

a stylish crow swordsman who slices through the arrogant squirrel wizards cards with ease,

and PeacockPeacock, the ultimate boss of the game.

PeacockPeacock comes with an incredibly unique set of tactics that will truly test your strategy.

Along with him, were also revisiting and refining not only the new elite monsters,\nbut the existing Act 1 elites as well to make every battle feel fresh and challenging.

Introducing the Explosive Chicken Stock!

Heres an early concept of one of our new elite monsters the Explosive Chicken Stock.

This bomb-obsessed maniac loves nothing more than a good detonation,

and hell shuffle bomb cards directly into your deck.

If too many bombs are left unattended boom your entire hand is gone!

Our goal with each elite monster is to make players think differently every time

as you get more familiar with the game, youll start needing unique strategy for each of them.

Because their playstyles are so wildly distinct, our designers have been constantly tweaking and testing the designs through real play sessions.

Each test brings new and exciting moments and we cant wait to show you the final versions of all the elite monsters!

One of my favorite game designers, Tynan Sylvester, once wrote in his book: A game designer does not discover fun by asking questions, but by observing the universe.

Hello, Wizards! Squirrel-yaho!

Theres been a big change in Elementail,

and spoiler alert: its a lot of fun!

Let\'s dive right into whats coming in the next update!

Origins were a bit of a headache.

At first, picking your starting deck through a simple choice menu seemed like a fresh idea. But in practice, the power level of your deck could vary wildly depending on what you choseand that didnt feel great.

Now, you will begin each play with a unique deck that represents the birthplace!

Each origin deck features its own beautiful card back design and comes with a composition suited for certain strategies.

From a game design perspective, the number of cards per deck is tuned to around 30. This naturally prevents players from rushing through the deck too quickly, keeping the games tempo balanced.

As a result, you get more time to grasp the mechanics and carefully build strategies.

And honestly? This version turned out to be way more fun!

Youll find yourself weighing risk versus safety more often, and the joy of tinkering with your deck card by card feels even more rewarding.

In this demo version, only a few origins will be unlocked. But in the full release, youll be able to unlock them all by meeting certain conditions!

We have just finished deciding on about 150 different artifacts!

Even in the demo version, some artofacts can be unlocked by meeting certain conditions and then added to the in-game artifact pool.

Take a look in advance at the wide variety of artifacts that will appear in Elementail!

Each artifacts function is going through a lot of revisions based on your feedback.

Look..! Even in the image above, you can see that the Rapier has received a huge buff..!

And now!

You can discard artifacts at any time!

Since you get back a bit of currency when you do, its now possible to pick up certain artifacts just temporarily, or flexibly pivot your deck-building mid-run.

This also means youll no longer be forced to grab a artifact that ruins your deck and end up losing the game because of it.

On top of that, weve added a bunch of new artifacts with unique effects that will make battles even more dynamicso please look forward to them!

ELEMENTAIL has surpassed 1,000 wishlists!

Thanks to your amazing support, were more motivated than ever to keep pushing toward completing the game!!

The very first update for the ELEMENTAIL DEMO is just around the corner.

The play data from all of you who joined the DEMO has been an incredible help for us.

Weve carefully analyzed the strategies of veteran players who managed to CRACK the game within just a few days, and for now, weve temporarily disabled certain artifacts that either needed balance adjustments or had bugs in their mechanics.

With the DEMO update, the existing Infinite Mode Rankings will be reset..!

This decision was made to ensure better level design and an improved gameplay experience, so we kindly ask for your understanding, Wizards.

Your intense competition on the leader boards means so, so much to us, and we hope youll continue to play hard after the update as well!

For this update, there wont be any major changes to the core game mechanics beyond bug fixes.

Butsome cool things are changing!

One coll thing is that cards now move!

As the director writing this DEVLOG, Im personally thrilled about the potential of combining card-rotation effects with shifting background perspectives in future updatesits going to add so much impact and satisfaction to every play.

Of course, when I begged the developer to squeeze this feature into the current DEMO build, I got scolded with: How on earth are we supposed to add something like that just two days before release?

So for now, please enjoy this as it is and rest assured, were already planning and working hard on even cooler effects to come!

Artifacts and monsters that temporarily add cards to your deck will now use a tattered, worn-out design!

This contrasts with the neat, well-maintained cards already in your card deck.

We came up with this visual approach to provide both clear, intuitive information and a little extra fun to look atbut if you have any feedback or ideas for improvement, please let us know!

Looking ahead, were planning a major overhaul of the Origin system in upcoming DEMO updates.

Weve noticed that depending on early origin choices, the games pacing can sometimes become too fast and deck power can vary wildly. We take this issue very seriously, and well be working to reduce that gap while keeping things intuitive and familiar.

Beyond the DEMO specs, weve already finished creating two adorable new characters with a set of animations, and were currently designing cool, unique monsters that will appear in Acts 2 and 3 after the DEMOs first Act.

We cant wait to show them to you!

Hello, wizards!

Weve had a busy month leading up to the very first release of our demo on Steam.

On the development side, weve focused on enhancing the Spine animations for our protagonist, Squirrel, and a variety of unique enemies, while also improving UI and UX.

On the game design side, our team shamelessly shared the previously released itch.io page with all of friends, acquaintances, and Elementail fans, begging for feedback.

[u]As a result, weve gained incredible insights into monster tactics, coatings, relic-based deckbuilding, and birth traits![/u]

Although these changes wont be reflected in the very first demo version, the birth trait selection will undergo major changes in the future.

However, we still need more feedback and ideas.

About Glass Coating and Credit Coating...

In todays DEVLOG, following up on our previous DEVLOG,

wed like to introduce two more coatings: Glass Coating and Credit Coating!

Glass cards in Elementail function similarly to those in Balatro, the new king of deckbuilding roguelikes.

The key difference is that while Balatros Glass cards center around the thrill of a razors-edge high-risk, high-reward mechanic, Elementails take focuses more on the physical properties of glass itself.

In Elementail, a Glass-coated card has a 50% chance to be permanently destroyed when used for an attack and when that happens, it deals 10 damage to the enemy!

Think of it as shards embedding themselves into the target (ouch).

This mechanic alone has created an interesting dynamic in the Elementail level design process.

In Elementail, card removal has extremely high value. Since its very difficult to remove cards through normal means, players often Glass-coat cards they dont use as an indirect way to thin their deck (praying, Please break!).

Ironically, the resources or opportunity cost spent here is partially compensated by the flat 10 damage it deals.

This effect is especially powerful in the early game, essentially forcing players to pay attention to deck refinement and strategic planning right from the start.

And heres something cool!

Remember when we mentioned that we wanted to focus on the physical properties of glass itself?

If the material is literally glass, then of course youd be able to see through it even if its face down.

When a Glass card is on top of your deck, you can see what the next card will be without even drawing it!

This gives players a big advantage in deck building strategies that actively include a certain number of Glass cards, or in combining artifacts that synergize with them, even well into the mid-to-late game.

Its the only coating that so clearly shows you exactly when to draw and when to stop.

As an Elementail player, our team personally loves Sticky Coating the most but as a game designer, Glass Coating was the most fun to create and the one were most satisfied with.

We can\'t forget the shocked expression on our developers face when we first added the concept of sometimes there are cards in the deck whose backs you can see. (thanks a lot)

Credit Coating started out as a Korean wordplay.

While brainstorming a coating concept that could take on the role of resource management during battles an essential element in any deckbuilding roguelike the idea suddenly struck us.

OO card, XX card credit card?

Were not entirely sure how best to translate the joke for other languages, but hey, were developers who decided to make something fun first. Well leave that kind of worry to the publisher. (Theyre probably working on the translation now..)

A Credit-coated card generates currency equal to its own bonus value whenever its used in an attack.

If you ever find yourself refining cards at a meditation, this is probably the one youll want to refine first. And for the sake of the late game, you might want to make sure your attacks in each battle include a Credit card whenever possible.

The idea of receipts fluttering through the air when a monster gets hit by a Credit card came from our art designer.

In the current version, the currency generated simply pops up in the center of the battle screen, but in the future, it will pop up together with those receipts.

Its not exactly story design in the strictest sense but, its fun! right?

Greetings, Wizards!

Since we first shared our prototype with our team, friends, and fans,\nweve been continuously improving the game based on your invaluable feedback.

Today, wed like to briefly share the progress weve made so far\nand introduce the finalized Card Coating system and its new effects, featured in the demo version now available on itch.io .

Elementail began as a single HTML file prototype built with just JavaScript and CSS.

The initial concept was a roguelike deck-building game based on simple luck-pushing mechanics\nsomething akin to Halli Galli or Dead Man\'s Draw.

Our first goal was to capture the thrill of risk and reward in each card draw, using a crude, minimal deck of cards.\nThen, we aimed to give players meaningful strategic depth by allowing them to actively manipulate their deck and cards.

Building on the prototype, we officially began development in Unity and it became increasingly clear that compactness would be the core design principle of Elementail.

In the early versions, the only available actions were drawing and attacking.\nWhile this simplicity was appealing, it also felt somewhat limiting.

We explored various ideas to expand on the gameplay, but none felt quite as fitting as the feature we now call puffcheek ability.

Player can store the card If there\'s a card you dont like or one you want to save for later

you can now press the down arrow key to tuck it into your cheek. \nThen, spit it out whenever the moment is right.

Its a simple and compact mechanic, but one that adds a surprising amount of strategic depth and skill expression to the game.\nPlus, it makes everything feel even more squirrel-like!

Card Coating

One of the most exciting features in Elementail is the ability to create cards you truly grow attached to.

Currently, there are seven special card coatings: Glass, Honey, Metal, Sticky, Void, Bread, and Credit.

Today, were excited to introduce the three newest coatings added since the prototype: Sticky, Bread, and Void.

Some coatings havent made it into the demo build just yetbut we cant wait to finish them and show you soon!

Sticky Coating

Sticky cards work like a Double Down in Blackjack.

When a Sticky card is the last card in your chain and you attack with it, it automatically pulls one more card from your deck to join the attack.

If that bonus card includes another Sticky card, the total damage is doubledit\'s an incredibly satisfying moment.

We\'re currently experimenting with a system where pulling another Sticky card with a Sticky card will trigger the effect again and again. Stay tuned!

Bread Coating

An attack that begins and ends with a Bread-coated card will instantly defeat the enemy.

What makes it even trickier is that if you try to store a Bread-coated card in your cheek, the squirrel eats itmaking the combo much harder to pull off.

In most situations, Bread coating is useful for thinning out your deck.\nBut once you\'ve collected the right artifacts or built a specific deck composition, you can start aiming for that glorious sandwich finisher.

Void Coating

Infused with the mysteries of the cosmos, a Void-coated card removes all cards used in the same attack.

Its a highly risky movebut since it absorbs the numbers of the other cards, it can be used strategically in combination with certain relics and synergies.

Whats Next

After falling short in the competitive division at Busan Indie Connect, our team is using the summer to our advantageadding new deck-building elements and fun effects based on player feedback on Steam and itch.io!

Well continue improving the game using your valuable play data and survey responses.

First on the roadmap is a feature where gaining experience unlocks new relic pools in the encyclopedia and starting relics for each character.
