Good day to you Excellency,
It has been another glorious week for the People's Republic of Basenji and we are long overdue for another update on the essential features of Rogue State Revolution.
We are getting closer to making the release date for game public (very soon). You're going to be the first to receive that intel report.
Meet the Minister: Aziz el Kamali
Aziz is a cunning man and while he offers the benefit of lowering construction costs for buildings that fall under his Ministry, the caveat to be aware of is that he may change policies you made to suit his own needs. And he won't leave a memo before doing so.
As with all Ministers there's some take and give but placing him within your cabinet will result in some major savings over the course of the game. If you can handle his mercurial personality. (He will straight-up poison you with mercury. Be advised.)
Speaking of Aziz el Kamali this week we're looking at roads. Doesn't sound that exciting unless you're a civil engineer but they are the first thing you must create in Basenji to connect varied points such as buildings and will be important to assess with regards to placement and their quality.
The Romans used roads as one long branded ink stamp across Europe because they were extra like that and hopefully you will facilitate the transportation needs of your people in a more civilized manner.
- How do you solve a problem like transporting the nations resources to be processed and distributed?
- How can we ensure trade routes with neighbouring countries?
- What exactly will a bipedal maniacal mech stomp upon?
We have a special treat this week as we share exclusive footage of the FMV cast doing some of their scenes. Your advisors Sabriyah Altaf and Yusef Kouri are played by Sam Smilovic and Karim Bayoumi respectively. Soon you will be able to return to a beautiful new Glorious People's Republic of Basenji in Rogue State Revolution. We're announcing the launch date early next month for a triumphant return to the paranoid and peculiar world we created over five years ago.
Rogue State Revolution is more than a sequel but a complete overhaul of our first and favorite game. Survey for new resources, seek inspirational experiences, hunt for an elusive separatist group, build a mechsuit, deal with climate change, find a hidden dirty-bomb, assassinate your rivals, punch a meteor, negotiate with a chicken. We went into this knowing that this needs to be the definitive Rogue State experience. This is a country where anything can happen.
Rogue State Revolution is packed full of content. Several hundred events, over thirty buildings, innumerable policies spread between your seven Ministries. There's so much we want to show you, but we're going to spread this out over a few weekly updates.
It's 2021 and we're bringing FMV back! Invoking the absurdity of Red Alert, the primary storyline of Rogue State Revolution has a ridiculous amount of cutscenes that deliver exposition from your political advisor and military attach or just have the foreign news media pontificate on the choices you're making while you're making them.
This is still Rogue State, so you're still managing Ministers with wildly different agendas and who will undermine your efforts if they feel their own particular needs are being neglected. You start with a handful, but can unlock up to sixteen of these Ministers, all with unique positive and negative qualities, with successive playthroughs. A single Minister change can dramatically change the feel of every game.
Gone are the abstractions of liberals, patriots, capitalists and fundamentalists...now every citizen has far more nuanced needs and interests: politically, religiously, ethnically and even the urban/rural divide. Your country is a melting pot of cultures, values and beliefs...and they all hate you a little bit. At least, for now. I'm sure you'll be fine.
Meet the Minister: Tariq Badour
Oh wow, look who's back! You remember Tariq right? Well, he's gone from being your personal aide to becoming a Minister of his own. And General (now Minister) Addad too! In fact, this is a chance to revisit a number of familiar faces from the original Rogue State, including a certain Emperor Roosti.
Tariq is a bit of maverick who will take a some money from the treasury each month. At least upgrades to his Ministry will never cost you cash, only favors! He's ethnically Qarifii, regardless of the Ministry he's placed in. The Qarifii people will be honored! One of their own in a Cabinet position!
Understanding your budget will help make things easier and Tariq will be able to assist you, while helping himself as well. Ultimately it is you who determines how the budget is allocated and any changes you make will no doubt be with the best interests of the nation and its people. Or maybe not!
Surveying
Your land contains resources that are key to developing and maintaining an economy of production chains. Tax revenue is fine and all, but if you want to survive in Rogue State Revolution you must either pursue a state-controlled export economy, or a state-controlled tourism economy. Or both! Resources won't spring forth in a glowing mist beckoning you to extract and this is where the surveyor comes in.
Resources require the surveyors expertise to investigate the land and then if you strike lucky, begin the process of reaping those resources. That bauxite deposit can become a mine, which can be smelted into aluminum, which can be shipped to a factory to be made into toasters, which are shipped to every home in Basenji because at the heart of every citizen is somebody who loves toast.
Each week we'll show you some behind the scenes secrets from the development of Rogue State Revolution, from stories within the alternate universe of the game to the what, why and how of design, art and technical insight.
The current keyart you see on various sites and the steam storepage came into place a few months ago when we released the first trailer for the game that went live exclusively during The Mix Next.
We worked with freelance illustrator Virgile Boulais to achieve key art that represented not only the important themes of the game, but to ensure composition of characters in ways that reflected how we viewed them in game. An example that you can see is how many pose variations we went through for one of your advisors, Sabriyah Altaf.

Hi everybody, I have uploaded a small update that fixes two bugs that have been reported recently:
- Under some circumstances, the growth prediction in the bottom panel would show wrong numbers.
- Saving the game while the settings window is open could leave the panels unresponsive.

And here comes another update for Rogue State, which rebalances some parts of the gameplay. Most importantly, the effects of taxes have been revised. Setting the taxes very high or very low now has more consequences than before. In addition to that we fixed a number of small bugs in the treasury calculations and policy effects, and a few minor graphical glitches have been fixed too. Thanks for all your feedback! It's been 10 months since we have released this game, and it's been quite a journey. Thanks to your comments and suggestions the game has grown considerably bigger, better and more enjoyable.

Hi everybody, we have uploaded another small patch. Rogue State 1.33 fixes a bug with the time machine that could cause the game to freeze. Guess it's not that easy to build a time machine after all. Thanks for all your fantastic feedback!

Hi everybody, we have just released a small update:

Hi everyone, we've just released another major update! Rogue State 1.30 comes with the following changes:
- A series of Russian themed events. If your relations with the US aren't too good, this might be an interesting alternative. It's a risky path, but it can get you great benefits in the late game.
- Many new events that have been suggested by the community.
- More ways to counteract unemployment.
- Special projects can now be cancelled manually.
- Bugfix: Prevent Steam from overriding Achievements that got unlocked while the Steam servers were down.
- Bugfix: Ongoing costs not updated correctly after a special project was stopped.
- Some other minor bugs have been fixed.

Hi everybody, we have a new beta version for you to check out! It has many new events that have been suggested by the community. And, by popular demand, there's also a new series of Russian themed events. If you want to test the new beta version and help us find bugs before the official release, please have a look at this forum topic.
Happy new year, everybody! We have some news for you: We're currently working on another update (1.30) that will include many new events suggested by the community. A lot of people asked for it, so there will also be a branch of events involving Russia, which will give you new ways to approach your foreign relations - annoying the USA might finally pay off. The update is planned to be released later this week. It will be incompatible with saved games from previous versions, so Rogue State 1.27 will remain available for those who want to finish their old games.
The One We Couldn’t Put Down: Rogue State by Little Red Dog Games (USA) http://haogamers.com/blog/2015/12/23/our-western-indie-game-of-the-year-awards/ Drew tried to rule over Basenji for countless hours while Iain laughed in the background. Failed move after failed move, uprising after uprising, swear word after swear word, he kept going back for more. Trying (and failing) to rule over a rebuilding state reached Civilization level cries of “just one more!” While higher scores have since been achieved, victory still has not. We’ll keep trying until we get there, and then try some more. One try for any civilization builders will be all it takes for them to get hooked, too.
Here comes another update that fixes the following bugs: - "Referendum" story branch: A rare bug where the referendum results were never displayed, and the game would just run out without a proper ending. - Endless Mode: Annual speeches stopped after turn 60. - Another rare bug that could prevent major plot events from happening. - Yesterday I accidently uploaded a broken build of 1.27 that crashed at the end of a speech. This is now fixed.
Hi everybody! The most recent update fixes a few gameplay issues that have been reported by players:
- Building nuclear weapons now has a bigger effect on US relations. The old behaviour was too inconsistent.
- Healthcare costs slowly go back to normal after the epidemic crisis.
- Fixed "Persepolis" achievement not getting unlocked.
- Fixed a possible crash in the resources menu.
Here comes another minor update. As usual, a couple of bugs have been fixed. This update also adds a special building to each of the four unlockable scenarios.
Hi everybody, we are really happy that you all liked the changes and new features we added with the latest update! We have just uploaded a small patch that fixes a few minor bugs in Rogue State 1.20 and makes "loyalty bank" bonuses more expensive. This is a minor update that won't affect your saved games.
The big update is finally there! We've been listening to your feedback and implemented many new features. Here are some of the highlights:
- An Endless Mode that doesn't have the Farouk storyline. That doesn't mean this mode is less challenging, as there are still plenty of ways to screw up.
- A new Easy Mode where you start with more money, better approval ratings, and the results of events are less punishing.
- Hard Mode now lasts one year longer than the standard game.
- Unlockable Scenarios can be combined with these new modes. Want to play "Capitalist Playground" in Endless Mode? Now you can.
- Loyalty points above 100 aren't lost - you can now spend them on nice benefits.
- Many GUI improvements, tooltips and explanations.
- Two new policies: education and mass transit.
- Many minor changes to improve the gameplay balance.
Hey everyone! We've finished work on a major update to Rogue State that is available now as an opt-in beta for anyone that wants to try it out (right-click, Properties, betas). Warning: Rogue State 1.20 isn't compatible with saved games from previous versions. Old saved games can't be loaded in the new version. Gameplay Changes - New gameplay modes! Endless mode has no Farouk, and continues on forever unless your loyalty reaches zero. Easy mode is...well...easier than the base game. Hard mode lasts for six years, rather than five, and has the usual ramped up difficulty of the previous "nightmare mode". These modes can now be combined with any scenarios you've unlocked. - Loyalty points in excess of 100 are stored in a "loyalty bank" and can be redeemed from the Parliament menu for benefits. - Policy effects now have hard limits. Gone are the days of boosting support for a quarter of the game and then coasting for the rest. - Policy window redesign, with clearer linkages between policies and their effects. - Two new policies: mass-transit and education. - Two new events! - Murders of Cabinet ministers are now less common. - Counterfeiting currency gives smaller rewards, smaller likelihood of detection and pays out even when detected (40m/33%). - Clicking on the dog's nose now brings up the cheat GUI. Cheat-codes disable highscores and achievements. "makeitrain" gives $200m and "assumecontrol" gives 20 LP. - Tooltips on the treasury, your regional projects and your Cabinet ministers now let you know exactly what you're getting into. - Very high education and very low corruption improves UN relations. - Allowed the game to start without a family name. - Added a bit of randomness to npc attack/defence values. - Enemies at war with another NPC now (usually) have a reduced defence value. - Highlighting factions in policy menu displays what policies and policy effects affect them. - Severe tax changes now improve or devastate employment and GDP. Bugfixes - Actions now should always update your treasury funds, including printing currency and having your bailout money repaid. - Fixed policy slider mouseovers not appearing in some cases. - Fixed Necromancy: Assassinated leaders could still phone calls. - Fixed wrong npc IDs when animating relationship bars. - Fixed rounding errors in quest benchmarks. - Meteor strikes no longer break the game if you need to rebuild intelligence or a hotel. - Oil pipeline now calculate correctly. - New unlockables and highscores are no longer overridden when loading an old saved game. - Fixed possible crash when loading a wrong VoiceMode variable. - Fixed division by zero crash when tourism = 0. - Fixed "attack npc" quests. - Fixed quest_complete variables not getting reset to false when the quest is over. - Export revenue quest disabled until turn 5. - Death penalty now calculates effects correctly.
Here's another small update that fixes a few rare bugs and minor issues. Meanwhile we're still busy working on a major update that includes some of the gameplay and interface improvements that you have suggested. If all goes well, Rogue State 1.20 should be available sometime next week.
We've enjoyed both the positive feedback and constructive criticism we've received over the past few days. We're going to keep tightening the bolts on Rogue State, and you can anticipate a lot of your suggestions being adopted over the next few days. New features will break savegames, so we'll give a bit of warning before 1.2 comes out. We will be building an open beta branch for any community members brave enough to test the new gameplay elements. We're just two guys trying to make a game about the kinds of countries that games don't really get made about -- thank you for your patience, your wisdom and for spreading the word about the Glorious People's Republic of Basenji.
Oh yes, another quick update. This one fixes more tax-related issues and a bug in the tutorial. Once again, thanks for all the bug reports and suggestions. We appreciate it, and we do our best to improve the game. Updates will probably be a little slower from now on, as we take a deep breath and have a closer look at your feedback and feature requests.
And here comes another update! In addition to minor bug fixes, this update re-balances parts of the gameplay and the score calculations. This also means that we have a new leaderboard for Rogue State 1.10+ Your old saved games will still work with this version. But if you want to keep playing play the previous version, you can use the Steam client to opt into the "old_1.03" branch. These are the most important changes in Rogue State 1.10: - War casualties: You're no longer going to lose countless of units if you launch a strong attack. - If your approval levels are very high, this also affects minister loyalty - Likewise for very low approval ratings. - Final score calculation has been changed. Most importantly, the offshore bank account doesn't yield as many points as it used to, while the survival bonus has been increased.
Hi everybody, we have just uploaded another update. It fixes a couple of bugs that have been reported. We've also improved the gameplay balance according to your suggestions. Most notably, the effects of raising and lowering taxes are less severe now.

Features
- A world of possibilities! Over thirty possible state purchases, six clandestine projects, eight potential neighbors and hundreds of randomly generated events. No two games will ever be the same and the approaches you take in one game may not necessarily be successful in another.
- Manage complex relationships that are more nuanced than war and peace. Forging unlikely alliances may just keep Basenji from the kinds of wars your leadership can't survive. Other leaders have distinct personalities that may inform your tactics.
- Choose cabinet leaders to help manage your country. Maintain their favor by accomplishing relevant objectives.
- Forge alliances, develop tourism, promote trade. Invade countries, assassinate your rivals, nuke the planet.
- Beautiful comic imagery inspired by French comic artist Jean "Moebius" Giraud.
- Thousands of lines of spoken dialogue, and the ability to play as either a male or female Head of State.
- Be the dictator you need to be. Tackle problems with the level of freedom or oppression you desire.
