UPDATES & FIXES

You let us know that some small elements in the game need patches and fixes, so we try to keep up with them. So, with the update that is now live on Steam, there have been some minor gameplay fixes, such as issues with the in-game camera and bugs like fleas multiplying endlessly on Mothdog. Bleh

But the most important part of this update is...

A new mini-game, which you will find in the game menu after unlocking all achievements in the game!

The Tinkle Forest - that\'s its name - is a simple game about taking Mothdog out for a pee in the woods, next to the light bulb house and...

Happy birthday, Bulb Boy! It\'s so hard to believe, but yes, it\'s true - today marks the 10th anniversary of Bulb Boy 1\'s release on Steam! We are dso happy that we\'ve been able to launch Bulb Boy 2: Jar of Despair so close to this date, after all, there is no better way to celebrate such an event than by playing the sequel :D

To be completely honest, we wanted to offer a decent discount on BB1 or even... let you get it for free for 24 hours, but unfortunately, we couldn\'t arrange that with Steam (Dead silence...? Alright, but what\'s enxt with Jar of Despair, you gonna ask? Well, we have some things to do! First of all, the game is constantly being updated and fixed, so if you\'ve encountered any bugs or problems, they have either already been fixed or will be soon

The second issue is various game polishing you asked for specific scenes to be selectable in the game menu, and we also heard that it would be nice to have several language versions of this menu after all, these are the only texts in the game. We will think about it!

We also plan to prepare the game for compatibility verification with Steam Deck!

Oh, and one last thing... Remember that the game is also heading to Nintendo Switch!

\nHuh, this is actually the last devlog before the release on Thursday... Oh boy, the time flies! Well then... Let me tell you a little bit about how Bulb Boy 2: Jar of Despair was made!

It\'s time to... Breathe

The idea for the second part of Bulb Boy didn\'t come immediately after finishing work on the first one. We needed a break - some distance, some time to miss our light bulb world again. After the release of Poopdie and its second episode, we focused on experimenting with new prototypes, ideas, and directions. It was a period of searching. We surely wanted to feel that the next project would be something special, not just a sequel for the sake of a sequel.

An ordinary situation but an extrordinary story

At one point, the question arose: what if our next game is Bulb Boy 2? That sentence opened up a flood of ideas. From the very beginning, we knew that if we were to return to this world, it would have to be an intimate story, one that takes place in a small, closed world, among a limited number of characters. We love this kind of atmosphere, where the characters\' emotions and small gestures can say more than hundreds of words of dialogue.

That\'s how the idea for this particular adventure was born, one that begins with something completely ordinary: dinner and... No jam on the table. It\'s a minor event that, in our style, quickly spirals out of control and leads to disturbing, bizarre events. In the world of Bulb Boy, even the simplest activities can turn into something surreal and terrifying.

New vision & visuals

This time, we wanted to approach the project in a completely different way. Szymon prepared the first concepts this time in color, which immediately gave the game world a completely different tone. Instead of gloomy black and gray, colors reminiscent of 90s animations appeared. We wanted Bulb Boy 2 to look like a good cartoon movie - one that we ourselves would have enjoyed watching as children. The colors were not only meant to enliven the game world, but also to contrast with its dark humor and the emotional weight of the story.

Back to the roots with new energy!

When creating the sequel, we didn\'t want to copy the previous game. We wanted to preserve the spirit of the original, its grotesque charm, disturbing atmosphere, and emotional charge but at the same time introduce something fresh. New gameplay ideas, refreshed visuals, and subtle changes to the narrative were meant to make players feel like it was the same world... but more mature, more cinematic, and full of surprises.

\nMy dear friends! \n\nToday, as the release approaches and we\'re just two days away from it, I feel the same thrill of excitement that I felt before the release of the first part. Many years have passed, but one thing has not changed - I still want to create games that evoke emotions that can be remembered long after the screen is turned off.

It\'s so good to see you all here! Today I\'m going to tell you a story about the boy who lived...? Nope! About the boy who became the light - so to speak. This is the story of the first Bulb Boy game. Enjoy!

The spark that started it all (2014)

The idea to create a game about a boy with a light bulb instead of a head was born in 2014. At the time, Szymon was preparing various sketches in the style of a classic adventure games. One of our mutual friends noticed one of these childlike drawings and commented: He looks like his head is glowing. That one sentence was enough to spark our imagination. That\'s how Bulb Boy was born a hero whose light was to illuminate the dark corners of a bizarre, grotesque universe.

When creating Bulb Boy, we drew on memories from our childhood and youth. We were inspired by old adventure games such as Gobliins, as well as more contemporary titles such as The Neverhood and Machinarium. We still love games that allow players to immerse themselves in unusual worlds - worlds full of puzzles, quirky characters, and atmospheres that you can lose yourself in. That\'s the kind of experience we wanted to give others.

The bittersweet process of creation

The production of Bulbware\'s first game was intense. On the one hand, there was the immense joy of creating our own project and the satisfaction of small successes. On the other hand, there were moments of doubt and problems. Our first Kickstarter campaign ended in failure, which could have stopped all work. However, something unexpected happened then - an investor who needs no introduction knocked on our door. PewDiePie saw the potential in the prototype and supported the project. This gave us wings.

It took us a little over a year to create Bulb Boy. During that time, we learned everything from technicalities and puzzle design to coming up with dark and absurd characters. When the game was released, we received very positive reviews from the media and players. However, alongside the satisfaction, there was also disappointment the sales results were far from what we had expected.

Nintendo coming to the rescue

We didn\'t give up and worked on ports of the game at the same time. Each new version brought Bulb Boy to an ever-wider audience. The key moment was the release on Nintendo Switch. Our game was among the top 100 titles available in the eShop - 63rd, to be exact. This opened the door to a whole new group of players and allowed us to survive the most difficult moment in the studio\'s history.

A dream come true and a door to the world!

The success of Bulb Boy was like a childhood dream come true for us. In an instant, we stopped being just people who wanted to make games, instead we became a real development studio with our own hero who won the hearts of fans. This time gave us the opportunity to travel the world, participate in trade shows and industry events, meet extraordinary people, and share our project with thousands of players!

That\'s how our adventure with game development began - from a spark in a sketchbook, through failures and unexpected support, to success that gave us the courage to dream even bigger.

In the next devlog, we\'ll talk about how the idea for Bulb Boy 2: Jar of Despair was born and why we believe this story deserves its own, even brighter spotlight

This is Artur Mikoajczyk, the man behind the Bulb Boy games! Because the release of Bulb Boy 2: Jar of Despair is approaching fast, I\'m here today to tell you about the beginnings of Bulbware and how it all started. Enjoy reading!

The beginnings of our dreams

Let\'s go back to our school days, when the Internet was still mainly connected via noisy modems, and dreams of having your own video game were something almost magical for teenagers. It was then, in 2001, that I met Szymon ukasik through a mutual friend. We quickly discovered that we shared the same passion: we wanted to create our own point & click adventure game. Full of enthusiasm, we started working on our first project, but unfortunately, our lack of experience and knowledge meant that our ambitious idea ended up only in notes, sketches, and a simple prototype.

Life went on, and for a while, we each went our separate ways. I gained experience in the gaming industry, learning on real commercial projects, while Szymon developed his skills in the world of advertising graphics, becoming a highly regarded illustrator. Despite our different paths, we still dreamed of the same thing a game that we ourselves would want to play.

After many years, we got back in touch. It quickly became clear that our old plans were still alive. Our conversations turned into a concrete plan: we would create a studio where we could realize our ideas without compromise. And so, in 2015, Bulbware was born.

Bulb Boy and other projects

The first fruit of our collaboration was a prototype game, which eventually evolved into the full-fledged Bulb Boy that you know so well. Our little glowing hero quickly won the hearts of gamers and the interest of the media with his cuteness and grotesque horror. This success allowed us to port the title to various platforms and feel that we were truly creating something special.

The following years were not only spent working on the next project Poopdie. At that time, we created a number of internal game prototypes that never saw the light of day, such as Dark Street, Fishy Island, and Little Goldar. These are just some of the ideas that were born at that time. They never saw the light of day, but each of them was a step towards what Bulbware was to become...

In 2020, the decision was made: we are returning to the world of the glowing boy. This is how work on Bulb Boy 2: Jar of Despair began. However, life likes to surprise us personal problems arose that slowed down the development of the project and naturally led to a split in the team. It should be noted that the split was amicable and friendly, but it still meant big changes.

Bulbware today and tomorrow

Since 2024, Bulbware has been a one-man studio. I was left alone and I decided with full conviction to finish what we had started together. Today, looking back on all these years of work, I can say that I am very happy that Bulb Boy 2: Jar of Despair is in its final stages and that you will be able to play it on October 23, 2025!

I hope that on that special night I will be able to say to myself: I did it!

Kuba from My Next Games here. Hows everyone doing in the new year? For us its been busy. Last month, weve won a for a video game prototype! (Im the guy in brown pants in the photo)


The competition was organized by CRPK Poland and we entered it with a proposal for a small point-and-click game - Hank: Straightjacket. Heres the story of how this little adventure game came to be:

We were about to start working on a new dialog system for our main project - Hank: Drowning on Dry Land - and we wanted it to be a bit different. In a regular game when the conversation starts the game pauses - you talk to the character and youre basically unable to do anything else. We want to change this and allow players to interact with the world while still in dialogue. There are some challenges that stem from that approach, though. What happens if the player does something noteworthy during the conversation? Wouldnt it feel strange if the hero broke a piece of furniture and the npc didn't react to it? We had some ideas on how to tackle those problems but we couldnt be sure they would work without trying them out in an actual game. And so we went on a rapid prototyping spree


Two weeks and five gallons of coffee later we finally had a build and a working prototype of the system. As a side effect we created this tiny escape room experience. We were quite surprised that it was even playable! So, we called it Hank: Straightjacket and decided to release it as a free game. If youd like to - giving it a go! - button mashing system was too hard on some configurations
- 32-bit version now works properly
- problem with beeing killed during picking up a tap
- some minor bugs
- added ALT+R shortcut which allows you to restarts current level

Neither of the bugs appeard during our beta tests on different hardware and sytems. We're really sorry for the inconvinience and hope that you will enjoy our game so only bugs that you find will be these under Bulb Boy's bed!
