Dev Update #003: From dust to dominance

Introducing the new Material system

We have completely redesigned the materials into something tangible and should be easily understood during gameplay. We have introduced 4 materials that the player can find and collect during gameplay. Semiconductors, Metals, Minerals, and Volatiles.

The stock ACE pod can carry up to 4 at a time, but more slots can be acquired at a Forge OASIS .

What do they do?

There are two main purposes of materials:

First and most important, they are still used for upgrades. You dont strictly need them to upgrade, but you wont have very much control over what upgrades you get without them. If you like a certain type of build, then you will want to be scavenging for these as much as possible.\n

Second, and new to Convicted Galaxy, is the ability to consume materials during gameplay to help out in a pinch. Out of fuel? A volatile material can optionally be used to replenish your fuel. In a battle and need to use an advanced ability? A semiconductor can generate power cores.

Theory behind the new design

The last build of Convicted Galaxy had an overly complex representation of rare materials. If you controlled a planet, you had access to the materials present on that planet. There were 16 materials categorized into 4 groups.

Some upgrades required a specific material, while others only needed a material from their group. We found that using the 4 material groups made upgrade interactions easier without reducing the overall mechanic functionality.

Additionally, we made the decision to make the materials a tangible pickup, rather than an abstract resource. This made it more exciting to seek out materials, and enabled new gameplay mechanics for us to experiment with. Overall, we were able to reduce complexity while improving gameplay.

Dev Update #002: Power Up at the OASIS

In any rogue-lite, one of the first things a player is going to look for is how to get stronger. Weve tried a variety of progression mechanics throughout Convicted Galaxys development, and were very happy to arrive at what we are calling the OASIS, short for Operational Asset Synthesis and Integration Station, a significant overhaul of the ACE pod upgrade process!

[img src=\"https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steamcommunity/public/images/clans/27154671/647d41dd0432fd7e9a9ae224f7176a02291724b4.png\"][/img]Prior to the dispersal of ACE pods into various solar systems, the ICF has scattered many specialized stations throughout the systems, the OASIS. Each stock ACE pod has a very minimal set of features. Every ACE pod is going to encounter their own unique struggles during their mission. To enhance their success, a pilot can visit an OASIS to outfit their ship with new functionality.

The OASIS utilizes an AI network to determine a suitable upgrade for the visiting ACE pod. Each OASIS can only be visited by an ACE pod once. Further upgrades must be obtained by seeking out additional OASIS.

Although an ACE pod is guaranteed a beneficial upgrade on every visit, it is in the best interest of the pilot to bring rare materials or ore along for more specialized and custom tailored upgrades.

There are two common variants: the Nexus, and the Forge.

Nexus OASIS

The Nexus OASIS will provide unique upgrades that can drastically change the capabilities of the ACE pod. These can include new abilities, new weaponry, and new passive functionalities. Each ACE pod is only permitted a single entry per Nexus and can acquire one upgrade in that visit. The Nexus does not utilize the more common ore that is collected. When entering a Nexus, pilots should bring rare materials for a better upgrade selection.

An ACE pod is guaranteed an upgrade on every visit to a Nexus, but if the pilot does not bring any rare materials for the on-station AI to work with, then the station will determine an upgrade for you. Nexus can be found in open space, often between planets.

Forge OASIS

The Forge OASIS will provide linear upgrades to basic ACE pod stats such as hull integrity, shield capacity, thruster power, etc. Ore gathered from asteroids and dropped from other ACE pods are used to facilitate these upgrades. Notably, the Forge will always contain a cache to reimburse the pilot for at least one upgrade.

Like the Nexus, only one visit is allowed. However, the pilot can get as many upgrades as they can afford with their available ore. You can find these commonly in asteroid belts.

Theory behind the new design

The old system of upgrading was based on experience and planetary control. It was cumbersome, hard to understand, and did not fit into the story or game flow well. We wanted to give the player the autonomy to build their ship, but the inspiration to explore and not spend too much time in the menus. We think the OASIS system will be exciting and tie various game elements together nicely.

A new lens

Convicted Galaxy is about to get a whole lot better

Core concept: refocused

We started development of Convicted Galaxy with a loose story and a core principle of keeping gameplay fun. This was a good approach for making progress toward a fun experience fairly quickly. We developed and shared a product that, we believe, was and still is quite fun. However, we want to provide a fun, worthwhile, and complete experience.

In the past year, we have solidified early concepts and have been focusing all design decisions around a cohesive, story-centric idea. This focus has made it much more fun and compelling to design, develop, and implement parts of the game that need to be finished. We believe this will translate to the game experience, making Convicted Galaxy more cohesive and interesting to play while keeping the fun aspects that already exist. And of course, leading to a version 1.0.

Path forward

We are still a ways out from pushing a new build to the beta channel for open testing. Even though we have accomplished a lot of new work, there are some core features which need to be finished before we will feel ready for wide scale playtesting.

In the coming months, we plan to share Dev Updates on a regular basis, highlighting new content that will be available in the next build of Convicted Galaxy.

Getting back at it!

It's been too long...

Yes, we are still working on Convicted Galaxy! Our team has weathered a lot of change over the past 6 months and it has been quite some time since the last update, I apologize for that. Our personal lives have taken much of our time lately, but Convicted Galaxy has not fallen off our RADAR.

This is the beginning of the end (of Early Access)

Although it is in a limited capacity, we are increasingly getting more time to spend on game development again. We have realized that our release goals have been a little too ambitious, and like many fellow indie developers, we have too missed many of our release goals.

New weapons, solar system styles, and weapons HUD - v0.5.0

Improvements

New Weapons
Two new weapons have been added to your arsenal, the laser and mine secondary weapons. With the new change, hull types will also determine the secondary weapons you will receive.
  • Combat (Drone) hull -> Missiles
  • Power (Gravity) hull -> Mines
  • Speed (Decoy) hull -> Lasers
  • Utility (EMP) hull -> No Secondary
Stacking hull types will accumulate secondary weapons (just like abilities), allowing you to switch between them as you please. There is also an automated check to reset your controls to default so that you will get the new action mappings for switching weapons and build options. If you miss the option, go into the controls settings and set them to default or re-map the new controls related to the new actions for switching weapons and build options.

Solar System Styles and Lighting

Friendly AI and beyond - v0.4.0

Improvements

We've added friendly AI ships! Put the pilots you rescue to work. Build fighter ships like yours for them to use. Once constructed at a friendly station, the friendly AI fighters will follow you around and help you collect resources, defend your stations and assault the enemies.

For now, you build a friendly AI fighter at a level 3 upgraded station with 600 scrap and a rescued ICF pilot. You can monitor their health and upgrades they have chosen in the new squad HUD. Go check it out!

A few more quick changes I want to note:
  • All ships cruise speeds have been reduced. Think before just cruising off into open space.
  • Lock-on missiles are no longer standard. You will start with a dumb fire missile just like the enemy AI. You can get the homing upgrade under the combat hull if you need it, but it will reduce the damage done by your missiles.
  • All small (non-Frigate) ships can now use tethers. Stay away from enemies when your shields are down!

OSX 32-bit Now Available

We have seen a few anonymous comments about purchasers who were unable to download the game (showing a download of 0 kb). [u]We would love to know more about your computer specs if this is you![/u] All build have been tested on our end and have files, with one exception, 32-bit OSX.

A Universal OSX Build is Now Standard

Prior to now, there has not been a 32-bit OSX version due to possible performance issues with older hardware that is unable to run 64-bit OSX. We believed that Steam would not allow 32-bit OSX users to purchase the game. However, this is the only way that purchasers may be having this issue, to our knowledge. As of today, the Universal OSX build will be standard to allow either 32-bit or 64-bit OSX to run Convicted Galaxy.

We hope this solves the issue, if you have any issues with the game, please let us know via the discussion board or email!

Convicted Galaxy will launch to Steam Early Access on Thursday, February 9th

We will be launching v0.3.0 to Early Access in just under a week. There will be a few handfuls of new Mission Logs and Unlockables as well as performance updates and enemy improvements.

Make sure you read the ACE pod Quick Start Guide to familiarize yourself with your starting vessel.

If you are having any issues with the game or demo, please let us know in the Convicted Galaxy discussions page . WE WANT TO HELP YOU! :)

Convicted Galaxy Demo Inbound - v0.2.4 update

Game Description Image The Convicted Galaxy Demo is nearly here! We've already published the demo store page and as soon as we receive approval, we will release the demo!

The demo will allow you to play in the initial solar system of Convicted Galaxy. Keep in mind that we have much more planned for the game, and this is just a small taste.

Along with the demo, we've updated all builds of the game to version 0.2.4 and include a lot of new visual and game feel updates.

The demo is still a pre-release product, so there are likely to be some issues and/or bugs that arise. If you find something/anything that doesn't seem right, please post your concerns on our group discussion page .

We will be launching the Convicted Galaxy Kickstarter campaign on Tuesday, January 3rd, 2017. We already have some great rewards planned. From Steam download keys for the game and soundtrack to naming and designing in game content.
