The period of the American Frontier was a fascinating time in terms of weaponry. Back then the ingenuity of gunsmiths really started to shine. Some guns became the foundation for modern firearms and went down in history as the best firearms of their time. Other, less successful weapons were simply forgotten.
Today, weve chosen 3 exotic guns that have revolving cylinders and rotating mechanisms. All of them were patented and manufactured during the time the game takes place -- albeit in small amounts, -- so our main hero or nasty gringos attacking him could, potentially, get their hands on these firearms.
Name: Porter Turret Rifle
Patent holder: Perry W. Porter (1st type patented in 1851)
Type: Turret gun
Caliber: .44
Number of copies made: 1250~
As we all know, gunsmiths have tried to make a practical repeating rifle for a long time. But, weirdly enough, the first design of a revolving cylinder had its chambers aligned perpendicularly to the center axis, resembling a wheel. And the cylinder itself was rotating horizontally -- hence the name turret. So in 1851 Perry W. Porter came up with an incredible idea of aligning the cylinder vertically! Despite being an overall clunky mechanism, it was, nevertheless, pretty functional. Still, there was a small probability of cylinder chain-firing, in which case bullets could fly in any direction, potentially wounding the guns own wielder. This drawback ultimately became the reason for the Porter Rifle to be forgotten; as Samuel Colt himself spread a rumor about Perry Porter dying to his own creation during one of the demonstrations! This rumor was false, but by the time it was disproven everyone already thought the rifle was too dangerous.
Name: Colt 1855 Revolving Shotgun
Patent Holder: Samuel Colt (patented in 1855)
Type: Revolving shotgun
Caliber: 10, 12, 16, 20-gauge versions were manufactured
Number of copies made: 1300~
Speaking of Samuel Colt. Back in 1855, his company started manufacturing a revolving shotgun! The gun offered much more firepower than any double-barreled shotgun ever could. It also had a unique property of having its hammer bolted on the side, unlike other, similar weapons. But, just like with any revolving mechanism, theres still a small gap between the cylinder and the barrel of the gun that leaks gunpowder gases while firing. Nobody particularly liked getting lead and gas spat onto their supporting hand, and holding the shotgun with both hands on the grip was just too weird. For these reasons, Colts Revolving Shotgun lived a rather short life -- just like most other revolving rifles.
Name: Walch Navy 12-Shot Revolver
Patent Holder: John Walch (patented in 1859)
Type: Revolver
Caliber .36 NAVY standard caliber
Number of copies made: 200~
The game has surely taught us that 12 shots are better than 6 - but what if you could make 12 shots using just one handgun? This neat concept was realised in a 12-shot revolver, patented by John Walch. The process of loading charges by applying powder and sealing it with a round allowed for some crazy applications. In this particular case the cylinder actually has 6 chambers, but each one of them was then loaded with 2 charges stacked one after the other. The revolver had two hammers and two circles of percussion nipples: outer circle detonating the charge in the front, and the inner one firing the 2nd charge in the back of the chamber. It sounds awesome, but in practice the gunslinger would have to use smaller powder chargers to fit two rounds. That led to each individual shot being weaker, losing a part of its stopping power. And everyone knows that its important to spend as little rounds as possible to take down a target -- even in video games!
12 Is Better Than 6 doesnt have these exotic guns, but has some of the most iconic weaponry from the Wild West era; and offers a great shooting experience!
So try it out now on Nintendo Switch and Steam!
