I've updated the Linux build to be inline with the newest Windows build. It is important to note that - depending on the version of Ubuntu you have - additional dependencies may need to be installed to permit you to play the game. The dependencies are: libcurl4 libopenal1 You should install these packages on your machine otherwise the games might not run. Try this in the terminal: sudo apt update sudo apt-get install libcurl4 sudo apt-get install libopenal1
Welcome to the sequel (and I must say much better game) to The Superfluous! An open world, base-building, adventure survival game with quirky humor and Llamas. Explore the wasteland of Alaska smashing skeletons in your supped up cab and trading veggies with the native rhino-people. Find out what the mysterious cube from space wants you to do for it.
PLAY THE ALPHA VERSION
I'd like to invite you to play this game and join the DISCORD server to become and active member of the development. As some of you know I am a solo indie dev, but I do read and respond to all of the messages (both on itch.io and our new discord server). Check out some of our members YouTube channels that have played VERY early versions:

Thanks for you time! Expect to see Sand: A Superfluous Game coming to STEAM early access very soon!
As of about a year ago, I've decided that The Superfluous is a done game. It completes the purpose and fulfilled my vision for the game. Is it perfect? Not at all. Are there things I'd change? Probably. I'll do a full post mortem someday but now it is time to move on. The game will only receive updates if someone finds a bug or someone requests a good quality of life update. The world The Superfluous created though is far from over. I have at least 2 more games I'd like to build in the world 'after the asteroid'.
Some of you might know that a year ago I started creating the sequel to The Superfluous, The Superfluous Sand, and posted at itch.io.
The Superfluous Sand
As of right now the Alpha is fairly far along and is free. So check it out if you'd like.
The story continues sometime later after the events of The Superfluous and it takes place on Earth. I've decided to change the format of this game to a top-down survival base building game in the same vein as Rim World but having you control a single person. This was always the plan (the third game will be different too) as it would be hard for me as a solo dev to make the same game over and over again and then justify you buying the same just rehashed. I want to continue to learn and grow as well. I am keeping the art style and humor so it should still look and feel like a Superfluous game. You'll even still have some familiar characters to speak to (E.D.I.E.).
Expect a Kickstarter (like I did for The Superfluous) and a much more polished and complete game. The Superfluous took me about 2 months to make. The Superfluous Sand is going on over a year of development.
Personal life (a flood, an adoption, and 3 hospital stays with our new baby girl) has kept me from keeping in touch with you guys. That is totally on me and I apologize. I hope to keep you guys on STEAM updated with my progress as this development gets closer to release. This was my first big game and I've learned a lot from this whole experience. I've even grown to like a few of you :) Hopefully, I will be able to bring you an even greater game in the near future!
If you want to follow my development more closely click on that link above and check out all the dev-logs and get involved in the community. You'll even see I made a few card games along the way :)
Happy gaming my lovely peeps!
I double the gem/coin gain from all enemies and mining activities. Hopefully, this is something you wanted and will help lessen the grind. I also added two new buttons on the LEFT menu to disable VSYNC and enable alt timing. Most of you won't need to use these options but are included for those that have high Hz monitors.
So I finally got back in to my house. Hooked up my computer and did a little development today. I pushed an update (for the PC only) that adds a way to kill yourself from the pause menu. That should have been in there a long time ago. Just an oversight on my part. Again thank all of you! I am working now on porting The Superfluous to XBOX ONE also on my next game (a sequel to The Superfluous but not the same genre of game) more about this in a future update.

Some of you know I am a Houston dev. Well we did not escape the flooding and are in the process of tearing out sheet rock and work our butts off trying to get things cleaned up. My family is safe and dry. Hopefully my computers made it and I can get back to working soon. The code is stored on the cloud so I haven't lost anything in that regard. If you want to help post on social media and try to get someone to buy our game :) - Adam Truncale

I adjusted the damage the player takes by %50 on the first 2 levels and %75 on the next 2 levels. This will help with ease the newer players in a little and make them less frustrated. The Superfluous is a hard game (I made it that way) but can be overcome with patience.

I updated the Mac build to hopefully fix some errors some people are experiencing (IE ground disappearing). I've yet to replicate these errors on my machine so it is hard to debug. Thank you to everyone on the forum trying to help me nail down this annoying bug. YOU MIGHT NEED TO REINSTALL the game to get it to run properly. If it updates and you can run it great but if not do this. [This will not erase any progress you made] In your game list right-click 'The Superfluous' and select uninstall. Then reinstall. Play. The good thing about this is it should run with less lag on old Macs.

Added a quick tutorial for those new to the game. I've noticed watching videos of people playing the don't know how to switch squad mates and use the secondary weapons. Hope this helps some.

The Superfluous Website "The Superfluous" [soo-pur-floo-uh s] is cave-diving, sci-fi, rogue-lite, platformer with jet packs and lots of explosions. The game focuses on navigating an asteroid fighting enemies and collecting loot to level up your team of intrepid explorers. The Superfluous has a fun story and features a squad system that allows you to switch your squad members in and out when needed. Other Features - Couch co-op: bring a friend along and yell at them for getting your guys killed. - 4 player local arena mode: take said friend and kill them for fun (in the game of course). - Rogue Lite: when you die (which you will do) you won't lose all of your progress. - Story: a fun story about the end of the world, bureaucracy, the military, and sci-fi culture. - Controller Support Available on PC, Mac, and Linux (tested on Ubuntu 16.04)

The Linux version is live. It has been tested with Ubuntu 16.04, but it should be compatible with any version 12 and above (that is what Steam currently supports). If you have a Linux box check it out and let me know if it works. DEV NOTE: I spent about 4 hours last night working on uploading the Linux version. It took me that long because I don't really know anything about Linux and I made some stupid mistakes. I pulled out an old laptop and installed Ubuntu 16.04. It seems to work well. I'll do some more testing of course but I the mean time I'll release it to ya'll for more testing.

The story is complete, achievements are set up, trading cards are traded, and we are ready to push to release. Everything is done (except the 4 player arena). Testing next week and squashing bugs and lots of spelling errors.
The story for the water Biome is released and with it probably lots of bugs and grammar mistakes. YEA! Sorry for the almost month between updates. When you are the only one working on a game and you get sick... things just stop. Next up: Boss level for water biome.
A new weapon is added today. The Flamer. It is obviously it is a flame thrower. Still in the balancing, testing, and tweaking phase.
It is only equipped on one guy for now: Stilgar.
For testing purposes, I've reduced the price of Stilgar to 500g (this will go back to normal in the next patch).
Enjoy!
You are now able to customize your keyboard controls. Yea, for progress!
I went ahead and added a co-op revive.
If a player dies in co-op and the team has ran out of squad mates to switch to, the other player can revive the current player in the body of the last squad mate they controlled. I added this so the two people can continue playing together. The revived player will die if they take any damage, but they can heal with a health pack.
I hope this helps to make co-op a little more fun.
A new update is live featuring SPACE WORMS!
You will start seeing smaller worms from level 5-14.
Level 15 has a surprise :)
The worms will split in a piece if broken in the middle. They are also very fast. There are a few weapons that are very effective against them (I'll let you figure that out). The screen will shake and you'll hear a crunching sound when they are close to the player.
Watch here As per community request I've added space worms to the game. I have decided if they will be bosses/mini-bosses or just regular enemies. Check out the video, but don't laugh I died. :) Not %100 on the graphics yet, but I'll tweak it a little and add it into the game next update. What do you guys think?
Any Ideas for new/different enemies in the CAVE BIOME? Right now we have:
- Two types of bats
- Two types of Slimes
- Spider crabs
- Exploding Frogs
- Two types of mushrooms
- Harmless Turtles
There has been an error in submitting the game. This is an Early Access Game and is not a Full Release title. We have already contact Steam and will hopefully have the issue resolved shortly.
Just stopping by to post a quick game play video. Enjoy! Click here to watch it
The Superfluous has been accepted to be sold on the Humble Store. It will release in on the same day. I am going to to try and get GoG next. Anyone else have a site they would like it on? Humble Store Link

features
- Rogue - Levels are randomly generated and get progressively harder as the player progresses through them. The player's goal is to defeat a boss to unlock the next biome.
- Perma-Death - for the individual characters, but they are cloned back to level 0 and can be used for other missions.
- Perma-Progress - any upgrades the player purchases or any checkpoints the player reaches are saved. If a mission fails all loot will be lost. The player must decide to leave the dungeon and keep their loot or continue to the next level.
- Co-Op - Play the campaign with a friend in local co-op.
- Arena Mode - Challenge up to 3 of you friends in a 4 player local arena mode (WIP).
- Platformer - side scrolling 2D platformer. The main locomotion of the player is walking and using a jet-pack. Attacking is done in two to four directions (depending on the weapon equipped).
- Squad Based - Never journey alone! Bring along several squad mates with different tools and weapons to help you dive deeper. Balance your squad with miners, healers, heavy weaponry and explosives.
- Destructible Terrain - mine and blow your way through the level to collect gems, create a shortcut, or gain an advantage over your enemies.
- Progression - As squad member kill enemies and clear cave sectors they gain XP. When they gain enough XP the go up a level and a random perk is assigned. These will be lost on death and can be changed for gold back at base.
- Three Biomes - explore the 'Dark Cave', 'The Underwater', or the 'Lava' biomes on your quest to save the world.
- Economy - Loot can be obtained in the form of Gold and Gems. Gold is used to buy new crew DNA (unlock characters) and re-rolling perks. Gems are used to upgrade your gear, the number of people in your squad, the starting health of characters, etc.
- Story - a fun, light story about the impending destruction of earth, bureaucracy, the military and sci-fi culture.
- Local CO-OP - 2 (shooting for 4) player local multiplayer. A holo-deck 'arena' is planned to add death-match gameplay.
- Controller Support - This game was designed for both keyboard/mouse and controller support.
- Sci-Fi - I love reading all types of science fiction {Asimov, Niven, Heinlein, Card, Howey, Clark, Wells, etc.} and have always tried to include that genre in my games.
the story
All games should have a story. A story can motivate and inspire or just be something fun and entertaining. In The Superfluous, we are shooting for the later. I know, I know, Indie games should make us feel something to be 'successful' (or so it seems to me nowadays); and we enjoy games with really in-depth emotional stories... but sometimes we all just want to laugh and blow stuff up.
The year is 2121. Scientists have discovered an asteroid (BAR-101), half the size of the moon, on a collision course with Earth. Normally this would cause great distress for the people of Earth, but because this asteroid will not make impact for another 1,000 years, most deem it as not important. Although there remain a few people that are concerned(a fringe political group formally called Republicans). To appease this minority group, the government of Earth spent billions of dollars to send a space shuttle to BAR-101. The shuttle crew’s mission is to place a Zero-Point-Energy bomb at the center of the asteroid and destroy it before it reaches Earth.
The shuttle, your shuttle, is named “The UWN Superfluous”. This ship is equipped with state of the art cloning technology, in case you or your crew is met with an unfortunate end before the mission is complete. New crew DNA profiles are available for purchase in exchange for any valuable metal (gold) found on BAR-101.*
Your ship also has a research lab to upgrade your equipment using any minerals available. Though please note the upgrades are super expensive and don’t really make your gear that much more effective.
Your crew will be equipped with our most advanced environmental suits and super sweet jet packs to help them navigate through BAR-101’s many caves, chasms, crevices, crooks, and caverns.
You have approximately 999 years to complete your mission, so no procrastination. Remember the fate of the world might rest with you and your crew. Though popular consensus says we will either kill ourselves through nuclear war, a super virus, or by proving to aliens we are useless/dangerous to the rest of the galaxy.**
- While you were in cryo-sleep the funding for this mission was cut in lieu of nicer toilet seats.
- *Consensus made through a social media poll.
environments/biomes
Very quickly you'll find out your mission is not what it seems. You were expecting a lifeless rock your team would spend a few easy years drilling through. BAR-101 was anything but. Riddled with caves and things that love the taste of your EXO suits, the asteroid, and your mission will be anything but easy.
Dark Cave - Fight bats, slimes, 4 legged spiders and more as you pick your way through the first 'Dark Cave' Biome. You'll see mostly gray rocks but strange fireflies will also light up the cave with a strange ambiance.
The Underwater - Deeper down you find there is a large pocket of water trapped under the 'Dark Cave' biome. 'The Underwater' challenges the player with slowed down movement. Imagine deep sea divers in their large brass suits. Players will face rocket fish, sneaky swordfish, methane gas bubbles, butt-pinching crabs, and more as they delve deeper within the asteroid.
Lava Zone - The last of the three biomes is where the asteroid gets its life-giving heat. The lava zone adds the extra danger of overheating the players EXO suit. If the player stays on the ground too long the heat will damage the player. Enemies like the Splitting Fire Slime, the Fire Spitting Spider, falling rocks, and flame shooting fissures will try to abate the player.
