I started working on my follow up to Pony Island, called The Hex, shortly after Pony Island's release in 2016. It's been a long and intense period of creation, but the game is finally complete!



The inciting incident in The Hex is a phone call that the bartender at an old inn receives. Because of a raging storm the connection is shaky; he can hear that there is a murder plot, but not who is planning it. The only possible suspects are the six patrons of the inn, each of them a videogame protagonist with a history of failures and felonies. In sequence, the player takes control of the characters and eventually triggers a memory from their past. This is where it gets interesting.



Each characters past plays out in an entirely different game genre. The majority of The Hexs ~6 hour play time is actually playing each of these 6 different sub-games. They are mechanically diverse yet themes and aesthetics tie them together, making The Hex feel like more than a collection of minigames. At times genres are bent and blended together.



Ive been working on The Hex full-time for the better part of 2.5 years. Its the biggest, most complex project Ive ever undertaken by a great measure. Jonah Senzel, the composer behind Pony Islands OST, has also been working on The Hex. He created an incredibly diverse soundtrack with over 20 original tracks and also handled the sound design. For the last stretch of the project I had the pleasure of working with Brendan Sullivan (@artofsully) who created some fantastic 3D models, as well as voice actor Michael Mola.



The Hex shares some similarities with Pony Island: games within games, frequent surprises, and a heavy helping of secrets. I think it's safe to say that if you liked Pony Island, you will like this next one.

This has been the most requested language since the game came out. I have received many emails from people looking to translate the game into Russian but none were willing to tackle the task of adding the Cyrillic alphabet to all 5 of the game's fonts... that is until Farhad took it on.

Hey guys, just another little patch here:

• Allow re-mappable keys for the 'Jump' and 'Laser' actions. The default is Spacebar for 'Laser' and Right Alt for 'Jump'
  
• Do not allow player to actually clear their save data if they select 'Clear Save Data' after clicking on the 'PonyIsland.META' shortcut in the Recycling Bin.
  

• If you find all 24 tickets in your first run you will not be taken to the 'final ending' until you actually complete the game.
  
• Fixed Uber-satan death animation
  
• Fixed audio from game sometimes continuing to play into the main menu
  
• Numeric button remapping now properly tells you to use 'Option' to open the dialog on OSX
  
• If you're a smarty-pants and enter Hopeless Soul's password into his profile before he tells it to you, he might try to expedite your playthrough
  

Fix for issues in Pony Island 3D and Asmodues.exe that were caused by the last change involving the numeric input mappings.

Hey Pony Island players, here's the next update:

• To fix an issue where players with non-QWERTY keyboards could not enter numbers 1-9, I have added the ability to remap these keys. If you hold shift while launching the game, a launcher will appear to change these settings.
  
• The original soundtrack .mp3 files now have proper metadata with the artist's (Jonah Senzel's) name and a nice looking album art image.
  
• Lucifer is actually an OK guy. He just hit refresh on his Code Storage.
  

Nothing exciting:

There was an issue after the patch allowing the spacebar to fire lasers in which the code puzzle portal at the beginning of 'Adventure Mode' would only open with a right mouse click and not a spacebar press. To those who had used the spacebar from the beginning, this prevented them from proceeding.

Thanks again to everyone who reports their issues in the discussion forums.

The changes for this patch are...

• Fix for issues with Pony Wings at low FPS. For those with lower-end hardware, you should be able to get through these levels now.
  
• Fix for getting stuck on the first 'Surrender Your Soul' screen after saving and loading.
  
• Fixed bug caused by click-spamming the start button at Satantech Keep
  
• And finally... because some players are crazy enough to ACTUALLY grind out 100XP in Act II when Lucifer tells them to, instead of hacking the XP bar... the wings will now actually unlock when this is done. Please... don't do this to yourself.
  

The time I had to work on the game today was spent adding in some small but requested features from the discussion forums. These include:

• Support for 1440p resolution.
  
• Adding the spacebar as an alternative input for shooting your pony lasers. This is to aid people who find the double mouse button setup uncomfortable or who have a one-button mouse.
  
• Added a couple new 'Act Select' shortcut buttons to the main menu. This should make the hunt for all 24 tickets less repetitive :)
  

The changes are as follows:

• Fixed bug: It is no longer possible to get blocked in the first "Desktop" screen by minimizing the chat windows as Lucifer and Hopeless Soul speak to you.
  
• Some minor adjustments/fixes based on player feedback.
  

Whew! What an amazing reaction to the game. I had some people report bugs in the discussion forums yesterday and I'm happy to say most of them are fixed.

The changes are as follows:

• Fixed a major bug: if you were stuck after the "Pony Island's of old" section because you quit the game while Hopeless Soul was talking to you," you should be able to continue from where you left off now!
  
• Fixed buggy audio when quitting the game during the tutorial levels of Act III and then reloading
  
• Fixed sometimes-broken code puzzles that force you to quit to the main menu and return to continue
  
• Fixed bug caused by entering nothing as a name when Hopeless Soul asks for your name
  
• Fixed some typos in the credits
  
• ... Satan has updated his 'code storage' screen
