Basic Movement
Movement in Eagle Island Twist follows a simple left and right horizontal scheme. When you run either way and suddenly change direction, your character will do a brief slide, then start running in that new direction.
Jumping & Grabbing
Jumping allows Quill and Fia to reach higher areas normally out of reach, which could allow them to grab onto a ledge and further access what was once inaccessible at lower heights. Certain runestones can further increase their jump height, along with being able to evade incoming projectiles and special enemy types.
Aiming
Quill and Fia utilize a multi-directional aim. However, their range to throw Koji/Kusako respectively is limited without the proper runestone! Players can take advantage of this directional aim to hit enemies beyond narrow pathways, traveling midair by hitting enemy to enemy, or to get a good angle to eliminate multiple enemies at once.
Attacking with different Elements and Maintaining Manaroc
Quill and Fia can attack by launching their flying companions at targets. Each owl can imbue itself with elemental powers to increase their potency and utility across different levels.
Below are just some of the many elemental forms you can have Koji or Kusako change into!
[olist]
Switching between Elements Koji and Kusako are able to switch between multiple element types, increasing their potency and utility across different levels. Knowing when to use the Magira type over the Icora type could prove essential to defeating certain enemies, as well as maintaining your manarocs.
Time to explore all of Yulu with Quill and Fia! Eagle Island Twist is available NOW!

A very minor patch in preparation for this weekend's speedrun tournament.
Bug Fixes
- Workaround: In rare circumstances the urchin at the end of Prickletack Pond could despawn itself. As a workaround for the tournament, if this happens the Manaroc Shard will now spawn in automatically at 13 seconds in the boss room or later. This will be fixed properly in the next major patch.
- Fixed: The secret code was not displayed when playing the game in German language.
[ 2021-06-04 23:42:24 CET ] [ Original post ]
Thanks to all the players who provided early feedback on Discord. A quick patch with a few QoL features and some fixes :)
Features
- Speedrun timer now continues to run on the menu and map
- Speedrun timer now shows an individual level timer
Changes
- The combo-crystal puzzle in Ice Slide Glide has been redesigned to stop players misinterpreting the solution.
- A manaroc block has been added to the challenge at the end of Thrust Jump Jeopardy to help players find the solution.
- In Hardcore difficulty, blocks which contained hearts on easier difficulties now appears as solid empty blocks instead of breakable blocks. This was misleading players into thinking secrets were nearby.
- Off-screen seeds in Sploding Seeds now have an arrow indicator
- Minor tweaks to a few levels
- Ice Shard Missiles on Ancient Armaments now despawn if you enter a room and one is near Fia.
- Sound effects no longer play on repeat when stationary on the Twist map screen.
- The clinking cog sound effect of falling platforms is no long audible when in other rooms.
Bug Fixes
- Fixed: It was not possible to gain a gold medal on Ribbilick Ruins. The coin requirement has been lowered.
- Fixed: The game soft-locks when health reaches zero in lava, when trapped beneath a platform.
- Fixed: The game could occaisional crash on first load due to an issue creating the config.ini file.
- Fixed: Spamming different feather selection when flying through a room exit could cause Kusako to teleport backwards in Flying Solo.
- Fixed: Kusako could clip inside the terrain when taking damage in Flying Solo.
- Fixed: Manaroc Twist Shards could be bounced around by explosions, causing them to land in inaccessible areas.
- Fixed: Sometimes new paths appeared offset after beating a level and returning to the map screen.

Hey everyone, welcome to the Eagle Island Summer Solstice Update! I've been paying close attention to reviews and feedback, and challenged myself to create this update fixing all of the key issues players had with the game! Here's a fun video showing the update's features. If you stick around for the end, you'll get a preview of what's coming next! [previewyoutube=2Pg3S9wGO5Q;full][/previewyoutube]
Revamped player control
You said Quill's movement was too slippery and unresponsive. I originally wanted Quill to feel like a retro game character, but this clashed with many players' expectation of an indie game. I've now increased Quill's acceleration (so he's not slippery) and added a skidding animation with dust clouds, making him feel more grounded. His air acceleration has also been increased to give greater control while jumping (a bit less Simon Belmont!) You also said Koji took too long to recover after missing a shot - this recovery time has been significantly reduced.
Revamped aiming system
You said aiming Koji was too difficult and the 8 direction aiming felt bad. I've reprogrammed the entire aiming system making it more responsive - for both keyboard and gamepad. I removed a feature which snaps the direction you aim back to horizontal - this was causing many players to inadvertently launch Koji horizontally when they didn't want to. The game now defaults to 360 aiming when using a gamepad, and has a new (optional) aiming guide to keep your aim true! If you want to use 360 aiming without a gamepad, you can either enable mouse control or use the auto aim accessibility feature.
New runestones
You said some of the runestones are too boring. I've replaced those ones with 17 brand new ones! I've also buffed some of the remaining runestones to make them more exciting and practical. Runestones now display a life bar on the UI so you aren't surprised when they suddenly explode! As before, there's the option to make them permanent if you prefer that. Toucan Traders now carry an extra runestone in their stock so you get a greater choice at shops!
Damage and checkpoints
You said the game is too hard and should have checkpoints to respawn at. It's traditional in a roguelite to restart a run from the beginning if you fail, but I totally understand that many players don't like that. Now you can enable respawning and simply start from the last fast travel statue you activated! There's also the option to completely disable taking damage. These options are available on all difficulty settings and can be enabled/disabled on the fly.
Effects and graphics
Koji's had a bit of a graphical update with a smoother turning around animation and a much bouncier squishy impact animation! Fire, lightning and ice effects have all been greatly improved - the game is much flashier now. Thanks to you all for playing, and stay tuned for more big news coming soon!

From the outset, I wanted to create Eagle Island to be an experience where you can play the game to best suit your needs - a challenge I took head-on to make roguelites more accessible without compromising the genres core ideas. So many people have been playing Eagle Island, thanks for stepping up to offer feedback and continuing to support the game since launch!
A sincere Thank You to everybody enjoying their time with Eagle Island. Our Discord community has been growing steadily and just surpassed 1000 members! Our award-winning game is soaring to new heights - and thanks to the communitys feedback, which has been instrumental in the development of this free patch, Ive got a lot of great ideas for future features and additional content. My aim is to make this the best 2D roguelite platformer of 2019!
I'm adding to Eagle Islands already thorough list of accessibility options, further allowing players to leverage in-game features for more personalized gameplay experiences.
Ive pushed a bunch of features, rebalances and fixes in the upcoming patch, including some of the most requested features:
- New Lite difficulty setting - bridging the gap between Casual and Core
- 360 aiming option
- Permanent runestones option
- Store extra runestones in Quill's backpack
- Win bonus runestones on a game over
- Create a loadout of runestones from Quill's backpack at the beginning of a run
- Improved thumbstick aiming controls - for both 360 and non-360 aiming
- Revamped difficulty screens
- Option to change difficulty level on Game Over
- Rebalanced several runestones & abilities based on additional player feedback

Hey, I've been listening to your feedback and I've just finished developing a big patch, and it's available now in a public beta. Just choose the public_beta branch for Eagle Island (there's a how-to GIF at the bottom). It includes a new difficulty mode, Lite, which only requires a 3x combo to earn health. Additionally, you'll be able to keep unused runestones and apply them as a loadout in future runs! You'll also get the chance to win extra runestones on the game over screen depending on how many monster's you've defeated. I've also added a 360 degree aiming mode for Koji. This is a departure from Eagle Island's core design and may unbalance the game for you, but it's here for you to try! Why not jump into the official Eagle Island Discord server and tell me what you think? All this comes with a whole bunch of other fixes and tweaks, check out the changelog:

Thanks to everyone who's been supportive and provided feedback so far! There have been a few patches already - you can check the changelog here. Most fixes involve making the minecarts easier. What's coming soon in v1.0.8.0? I've received a LOT of feedback over the last few days, and one thing is very clear. Players are divided into two main categories: those who want to challenge themselves to learn the game/mechanics, and those who would rather go through the game with less challenge (presumably with a more Mario-like difficulty). For those in the first category (want a challenge and learn the game/mechanics), not too much is changing. I'm patching and fixing any unfair parts so you won't be cheated. For the latter category, I'm introducing a new difficulty mode - Lite. In this mode you'll be able to gain health by attaining a 3x combo (instead of 4x). You'll be offered the option (but not necessarily encouraged) to change the difficulty after having a few game-overs on a level. You'll have some bonus HP while fighting overworld bosses. A question to prospective Lite difficulty players - would you like blue chests to contain 1 heart as well as gaining hearts from 3x combos? I need to make sure this mode has the correct settings and your feedback is required! It'll go live on a beta branch - more info coming soon.

Eagle Island is LIVE! YES - its true! Thank you so much for your patience in this journey. My first video game is now available for you to play! Ive dreamed of being able to complete and launch a game for most of my life. With your excitement fueling my programming, its finally a reality. Not only did Eagle Island successfully fund on Kickstarter way back in 2017 the release on Steam, but its available on Nintendo Switch (NA) eShop right now, too! Its been an amazing learning experience, of course. For example, Nintendo Switch (EU) eShop isnt live yet (but it will be on July 16) - turns out the certification can be a real pain in the feathers. Regardless - Thank you for playing and supporting Eagle Island. Keep an eye out for merch soon!

Weve received some great news ahead of announcing our launch date!
Eagle Island was on display for a record-breaking attendance at MomoCon 2019. Over 39,000 gaming and animation fans made their way through the convention centre to play titles including a brilliant lineup of indie developed projects.

The judges, Rami Ismail (Vlambeer), Mike Fahey (Kotaku), Chris Carter (Destructoid), Austin Wood (PC Gamer), and Janet Garcia (IGN), gather to select the top 5 games at MomoCon 2019! Amongst the standouts, Eagle Island was named an Indie Winner!
Its an honour to be awarded and include with other great titles.
Were really, really excited to get the launch Eagle Island. Stay tuned - launch date will be announced very soon.

Eagle Island is on the way - its HAPPENING!
Its safe to say we underestimated the amount of time behind proper QA and testing, but the support weve had in the past year has been.. owl-mazing - thank you to those in the Discord and on Twitter for joining our high-spirited community.
With an official demo now available on Steam, were on track to speaking publicly to a very exciting launch date announcement in the coming weeks! After taking Eagle Island to conventions and putting it in the hands of reviewers, soon Koji and Quill will be available for everyone to play at home.
If you havent yet - get your hands on the demo! Every run generates a new map - who knows what youll come across on your next crawl.
Keep an eye out for the Eagle Island launch trailer and date in the coming weeks! Thanks for sharing the experience with me.

Hey there, prospective falconers!
Eagle Island is finally feature complete! I just need to get through the testing phase to ensure the product you receive is bug-free and super smooth!
If you want to join the community, chat with other fans or testers, or even myself (I'm Nick), hop into the Eagle Island Discord server.
Here's a recap of what you'll find in the game:
- 9 biomes, with a total of 16 visually different environments
- An impressive and unique level generation system
- Story mode with 19 procedurally generated levels
- Rogue mode with 16 configured run styles
- 85 runestone perks to randomize your character build
- 10 main bosses, and 3 special story mode boss battles
- Each main boss has 4 difficulty settings, making future encounters more intense
- Boss Rush mode, which is crazy fun
- Weekly Speedrun mode, where you can challenge other players to the fastest completion time on a short run
I tried so hard, but we have just missed the window for releasing in 2018. This is disappointing for all of us, but it does mean I can spend a little time giving the game that extra layer of polish before a launch in the new year!

GIF heavy post!
Quill and his owl, Koji, are exploring Eagle Island and attempting to rescue the magical Totem birds from a monstrous eagle. You can see Totem Zephara above!
These boars are causing quite the commotion!
Deep in the mines Quill and Koji find a rickety old mine cart track. You'll need quick reactions to launch Koji as you hurtle into danger!
Treasure chests containing perks are strewn across the levels. Here, Quill has collected the dangerous Flame Strike perk which sets the ground ablaze when using the fire attack!
Here Quill and Koji have to navigate a gauntlet of angry sea urchins before finding a locked door. To open it, they have to activate the combo crystals on the ceiling.
No game is complete without big bad bosses. This angry scorpion is one of 10 bosses to be found in the game! Watch out for his fire attacks!

🎮 Full Controller Support
With its falconry-based gameplay within uniquely generated worlds, Eagle Island is set to a beautifully modernized pixel art aesthetic and provides a breath of fresh air to the platforming genre.
Taking inspiration from the roguelike and metroidvania genres, players of Eagle Island can enjoy either short runs or a longer story based experience.
- Fully procedurally generated levels
- 80 different perk abilities to mix up the gameplay each run
- Magical feathers transform your bird into elemental forms
- 9 beautiful environments to explore
Quill's arsenal of solo moves consists simply of running, jumping and the occasional ledge grab - the game keeps to its classic 16-bit inspiration. Launch attacks with Koji in 8 directions using the D-pad-like aiming controls. Hit enemies in quick succession to earn greater rewards from combos. Miss an attack and you'll be forced to wait longer for Koji to return. If Koji is attacked or captured, Quill will be briefly defenceless and must take evasive action whilst vulnerable!
