Bug Fix Patch Release

There were a couple issues introduced with the last release that should now be fixed:

  • The tower should appear properly in Sinking Sands Heart of The Sandpit
  • The snowballs should appear properly in the Snowball Scramble Challenge Level

Be sure that Steam has updated the game and verify the correct build number (6489066) in the in-game options menu.

Thanks to ToriMakara, creepercraftsix, bitweeder (and others) for reporting these issues! And please let us know if you spot anything else, as we're a small team and our resources are limited, so we appreciate all the help from the community.

Thanks,

Paul & Ben

Ultrawide Monitor Support Added

Hi All!

We have a small but noteworthy update today which adds native ultrawide monitor support (21:9 and above) for folks out there gaming on fancy monitors. To enable an ultrawide resolution, simply navigate to the in-game options screen and select your monitor's resolution from the dropdown. Poi now looks and runs great at 3440x1440@144hz and up!

We also fixed some legacy UI animation bugs when running the game at higher frame rates and made some minor UI improvements to the options screen.

Oh, and some of you may have noticed we recently transitioned the Official Poi Soundtrack DLC to Steam's new OST type, so for those of you who own the soundtrack or the Deluxe Edition of Poi, the soundtrack should show up in your Steam Library now.

And last but not least, THANK YOU and everyone else for supporting our small dev team over the years.

Paul and Ben from PolyKid

P.S. We created these game builds (Windows, macOS and Linux) with a slightly newer version of Unity and from a clean machine, so if you encounter any new bugs or unexpected behavior please let us know.

P.P.S. Here's a bonus picture of Poi running on a 34" curved ultrawide.

If you have an ultrawide monitor, we'd love to see pictures of your setup running Poi!

Art Book, Music Player and Achievements, Oh My!

Greetings, Poi-ers!
We're rolling out an update today that adds three new features to the game:

  • A digital art book
  • A music player
  • An achievements screen

All three features can be accessed from a new "Extras" menu option on the main menu.

Note: New players will see the menu option appear after collecting their first medallion, and for players who have already beat the game, all music tracks will automatically be unlocked.

Art Book
The digital art book contains several pages of unreleased and promotional art that unlock based on your total medallion count.

Music Player
The music player lets you listen to all the tracks in the game. Each track unlocks the first time you hear it.

Achievements Screen
The in-game achievements screen shows your overall achievement progress with crisp, high resolution graphics.

And finally, a big thanks to everyone for being a part of the Poi community all this time.

Paul & Ben from PolyKid

macOS Catalina Support

Hello Poi Fans!

We're releasing an update today to support macOS Catalina.

As you may have heard, 32bit applications no longer work on Catalina, so this update includes a 64bit version of Poi for macOS.

Happy gaming,

Paul & Ben from PolyKid

Bug Patch #2

Hey all,

This week we've got another small Friday update (build #1639667) with a few changes.

Bug Fixes and Improvements

  • Added an option to toggle VSync from the options menu (this might help the performance/stuttering issues some of you have still been reporting).
  • Fixed a bug with mouse acceleration introduced from Bug Patch #1
  • Fixed a bug when using Alt+Enter (Cmd+F on Mac) to enter full screen mode where the UI/HUD would disappear.
  • Updated our Steamworks SDK (this should be a transparent change, but if you see any issues with achievements or leaderboards, let us know).

Set Target Frame Rate
We've also added an in-game console command to help those with performance issues. You can set the target frame rate (from 30-120). For example, if your machine is less powerful it might be a better experience to clamp the frame rate to 30.

  • Open Poi and hit the tilde (~) key (left of the 1 key).
  • Type: "targetfps [num]" (no quotes and replace [num] with the desired fps). For example: targetfps 30
  • Hit (~) again to close the console.

You can also use the "fps" console command to display the frame rate in the lower left corner of the screen to verify.

We're continuing to work on bugs, performance and other things so please keep the feedback coming.

    Happy weekend!

    Poi tops the charts!

Woohoo! Thanks to our AWESOME fans, Poi got to the top of the Popular New Releases chart on the Steam homepage. What a great launch day!

Be sure to leave us an honest review! We read every single one, both good and bad, to see what people like about the game, and what they don't. It's really helpful to see what might need fixing, and it helps more people find Poi on Steam.

And please tell your friends about Poi! We're seeing a lot of people who have never heard of Poi before and are really happy to have found a 3D platformer to play. Each and every little bit helps the game a TON and we greatly appreciate all the love!

We're working hard on a some of the bugs we've seen and hope to have a patch out really soon.

    Thanks again everyone!

    Poi has officially RELEASED!

Poi has officially transitioned from Early Access to Full Release on Steam! We couldn't have done it without the support from the community, so THANK YOU to everyone who has helped us along the way!

We're really excited to see what you guys think of the game, so find us on Facebook, Twitter, or our Steam Community and share your thoughts. Also, please leave us an honest review and tell your friends about Poi if you think they'd like it. Every shout out helps our scrappy little team, and we greatly appreciate each and every one!

With that out of the way, there's a lot of stuff to cover, so let's dive right in!

    Important Note
For those of you who prefer to jump right into the game and skip reading the update, we recommend you start a new save file to experience the full game, as we've made hundreds of improvements throughout (however your old save files will work just fine).

    Poi - Deluxe Edition
With the addition of an official soundtrack, we've added a special Deluxe Edition bundle which includes both the game and the OST for a 10% discount (15% launch discount until 2/8) here.

    New Ability: Slide Dive!
Added by popular demand, the slide dive adds a whole new way to traverse levels. Try it on slopes to build up momentum!

    New Game+
After beating the game, you'll unlock New Game+ mode from the save select screen that adds a unique twist when playing through the game again.

    Updated Moon

We've added secret costumes and hidden hats throughout the game for you to find. Mix and match to suit your style!

    Leaderboard Reset
We've versioned the leaderboards for full release and fixed the remaining known exploits, so all new times should be valid (the old leaderboard data still exists, it's just been hidden). There are now 74 leaderboards in total, so we hope to see you on there!

    • Fixed possible application crash on exit.
    • Optimized CPU performance across the board.
    • Fixed rare soft lock during fossil collect.

    Steam Cloud Added!

    Hello Everyone,

Today we have a mini Friday afternoon update.

    Steam Cloud
We've integrated Steam Auto-Cloud which means all your save files will automatically get synced to the cloud the next time you play Poi.

It should support cross-platform syncing too (Windows, Mac & Linux), so if you log on to Steam and start playing from another computer, all your save data will be there.

    Have a great weekend!

    Update #8 - Mega Medallions!

    Hello, Everyone!

First of all, we'd like to welcome those of you coming from the Humble Monthly Bundle. We were happy to be featured in the August edition.

But let's get right to the update because we've got a lot of new stuff to cover!

    Warning: Minor spoilers ahead.

    99 Explorer Medallions
Our total medallion count has gone from 50 to 99 for this release!

    Golden Gears
We've added a new character to the sky, so be on the lookout for someone new!

    Challenge Levels - Key Mode
If you manage to complete all of the Merchant's challenge levels, a new challenge mode will unlock.

    Explorer Tasks
After you find and talk to the stow away girl on the airship she'll give you a list of explorer tasks to complete.

    Super Soaring Course
Put your soaring skills to the test in this new area.

    Mole-iseum
Hone your fighting skills by defeating groups of enemies in the Mole-iseum.

    Mystery Maze
Find your way to the end of this mysterious maze.

    Story Cards
We've introduced new story elements to shed some light on the Master Explorer's backstory.

There's a new way to return back to the Forest from the Sky, so be sure to check it out and see if you find anything new!

    Unity 5
We've finally upgraded to Unity 5. This means there are likely several new bugs we haven't found yet, so please report any issues or differences you encounter over on our forums. This may improve performance for some of you as well.

    User Feedback & Improvements

    Linux/Ubuntu/Steam Machines Crash Workaround
If you're experiencing a crash on startup, try launching Poi with the "-force-opengl" launch option. This seems like an issue with Unity 5 that we're working to resolve.
Steam Machine: Manage Game > Set Launch Options... > -force-opengl
Linux: Right click Poi in Steam > Set Launch Options... > -force-opengl

And finally, a big Thank You to all of YOU, our Early Access players who continue to support us!

    Sincerely,

    - Ben & Paul

    Enemies Friends Patch Notes

    Hey Everyone!

We hope you've been enjoying the latest update! We had a great time watching everyone check out the new stuff.

We've got a bunch of bug fixes based on your feedback that address the most annoying issues with the latest update.

    Patch Notes

    • Enemies will now pause when talking to other characters or collecting Explorer Medallions
    • Rolling into most enemy types now causes damage (be careful not to miss!)
    • The 100 coin Explorer Medallions no longer disappear if you die before collecting them
    • Fixed an issue where the SFX volume would randomly get set to zero
    • Adjusted difficulty of Snowball Scramble challenge level
    • Made some adjustments to performance that (hopefully) reduce jitter on lower-end machines
    • Adjusted volume for some voices so they don't sound too loud / out of place
    • Reduced "falling death" cutscene duration from 3s to 1s
    • Fixed a few instances where enemies were floating above the ground
    • Fixed a teleport bug with ropes (sorry speedrunners!)
    • Fixed a few instances of missing or incorrect text
    • Fixed an issue with resetting the level while stuck in a snowball
    • You can no longer get stuck in the well in Sinking Sands
    • Coins are now paused during cutscenes
    • Resetting a non-challenge level now replays the level intro cutscene
    • Fixed an issue where events in the Sky were sometimes out of order
    • Fixed an issue that caused coins to get "stuck" on the player without being able to collect them
    • Fixed an issue where the black death screen could flicker
    • Fixed a bug where the game could be paused during fade transitions
    • Various minor UI adjustments

We really appreciate all the feedback so far and we take all of it into consideration. Keep it coming!

    -PolyKid

    Update #7 - Enemies Friends

    Hey Everyone!

Today we launch our BIGGEST update yet. There is so much new stuff to check out, so let's get straight to it!

    Improved Story & Flow
We've tweaked character dialog and the overall game flow in order to tell a better story and make the whole experience feel much better. We encourage people to try out a new save file to get the full experience! There may even be a hint of what's to come if you play through again...

    50+ Explorer Medallions
We've added a 7th Explorer Medallion to each level, as well as others throughout the game. There are now over 50 medallions to collect!

    Enemies have invaded
Be careful out there. We've added nine enemy types to the game.

    New Friends
Each level now has a friendly race of creatures to meet.

    Player Voices
We've added character voices to the game. Special thanks to Tamara Ryan, Chris Thurman and Michael Sheleman for lending their voices to the game.

    Mount Magma Overhaul
Some of the objectives in Mount Magma have been completely redone due to the Buckethead invasion.

    Sky Overhaul
There is a ton of new stuff to see in the Sky as you play through the game. Friends that you meet in the levels will appear, new events will happen, and maybe a secret or two will show up...

    New Challenge Levels
We added five new challenge levels, so be sure to save up and check them out.

    Fossil and Location Rewards
Finding all the fossils and locations will now net you some cool rewards, so be sure to explore every nook and cranny for them.

    Explorer Book and UI Update
The UI and Explorer Book have a new and improved look.

    New Shop Items
We've removed the "coming soon" items to free up space for two new items: the coin magnet and extra heart container.

    Revised Death Flow
Falling off a level now decrements your heart count by one instead of insta-death (so it's easier to hold on to your coins). We've also added a new death screen when all your hearts have been lost.

    Improved Camera
The camera should be much smoother now and no longer go through walls.

No more Explorer XP and Explorer Level
Everything is now based off how many Explorer Medallions you have. We think this makes unlocking progress simpler to understand and feels better overall.

    True 60 FPS
We investigated an issue brought up by qaopjlll on our forums and found that the game was rendering at 60 FPS, but our physics was only updating at 50 FPS. We've made some changes and now everything runs at a true 60 FPS. You should notice the game to look a lot smoother!

    And more!

    • Various gameplay improvements to the Forest
    • A tall man with a beard has been spotted in Mount Magma.
    • The Astronomer in Cozy Canyon will now visit you in the Sky if you help him out.
    • New player animations and effects
    • Lots of bug fixes
    • Additional SFX and Music

We've still got a lot left to do, but we hope you all enjoy this latest update! Please let us know if you see any bugs and share your comments and feedback on our forums. And THANK YOU to all our early access players. Your support is what keeps us going!

    -Ben & Paul

    Big Progress Update

    Hello everyone!

It's time for a long overdue update. We've been hard at work adding new features and more content to the game. The new build isn't quite ready for Steam yet, but we wanted to give everyone a sneak peek of what we've been working on!

    Enemies
We've added enemies to the game! You asked, and we listened. They really add a whole new dimension to each world and we can't wait for you guys to check them out.

    New Characters
There are new friends to meet in each world! From the friendly Lavasaurus Rex to the crystal munching Spooks, you'll need to help them out to get all the Explorer Medallions.

    UI Overhaul
We started work on a UI re-skin to get rid of the placeholder grey backgrounds and replace them with something that fits the style of the game a bit more.

    Something mysterious...
Also, something has appeared on the horizon? What could it be?

    That's not all...
There's a ton more to talk about, but we'll do that in a later update. To give you a quick idea, here's a few of them:

    • More challenge levels
    • Player voices
    • New music tracks

    Stay tuned!

    Update #3 - Linux + SteamOS

    Hey Everyone,

We wanted to get a small Friday update (build id #895853) out this week with Linux + SteamOS support! We heard you asking for it, so now those of you with Steam Machines can enjoy Poi from your living rooms, too.

    Poi running on Ubuntu Linux

    [/img]

    Bug Fixes / Tweaks

    • Fixed a bug where the back button didn't work correctly on Windows.
    • New player sprint animation (work in progress).
    • Minor Cozy Canyon & Mount Magma level adjustments.

    Medallion "Return to Hub" Feedback
We also wanted to address feedback regarding the forced return to hub flow after collecting a medallion. We realize Cozy Canyon and Mount Magma didn't change at all based on which medallion you select, but that's something we always wanted to add. So for this update, we modified those levels a little based on which medallion you pick from the level select screen. Right now the changes are relatively small, but we hope to expand upon this system going forward.

We're still looking into persisting more data between level loads (ie, the 7 Lost Keys), but overall we feel this direction gives us more creative freedom (for current and future levels) to make each medallion feel more unique.

Of course this is a work in progress and we appreciate everyone's feedback, so please let us know what you think!

    Have a great weekend everyone!

Update #2 - Mac, Save Profiles, Additional Leaderboards and Bugs!

This week's update brings OS X support, save profiles, additional leaderboards for all medallions and a bunch of bug fixes & improvements.

    [/img]

We're still hard at work on more levels and content, but we wanted to get these important changes out first. The full list is detailed below:

    Update #2 (build id 884894)

    New Features / Tweaks

    • Added multiple save profiles from the main menu.
    • Added global leaderboards for all medallions.
    • Display medallion times in the Explorer Book.
    • Display the current level timer in the pause menu.
    • Prevent accidental cutscene skips by showing "Press A to Skip".
    • Mapped keyboard arrow keys to rotate the camera.
    • Re-mapped the close parachute keyboard key from 'B' to 'R'.

    Bug Fixes

    • Fixed a bug where restarting levels didn't reset the level timer.
    • Fixed occasional mouse cursor flicker.
    • Fixed rendering artifacts with UI text caused by different resolutions.
    • Fixed camera pop after initial cutscene in the forest.
    • Fixed input bug when selecting UI elements (sometimes it would skip over a selection)
    • Fixed a bug where the resolution drop-down list could extend off screen (on 4k monitors).
    • Fixed a bug where the HUD timer could overlap the pause menu.
    • Fixed a bug where fossil & location UI popups could overlap.
    • Fixed a rendering bug with the telescope UI on low-quality mode.

    • Fixed a bug where UI hints would flicker between keyboard and controller images.

    • Player avatar resets properly when deleting save data.
    • Removed floating grass in the forest.
    • Disabled auto-rotate camera zones when playing with mouse/keyboard.

    Shoutouts

    Additional Notes

    • Upgraded from Unity 4.3 to 4.6.9 (for added stability).

Please let us know what you think of this update on our forums.

Thanks again for your support everyone!

    Autumn Sale, Trading Cards More

    Hello Everyone!

We're happy to be participating in the annual Steam Autumn Sale this year, so if you haven't picked up the game yet now is a great time to join the fun.

    Trading Cards
We also just released our first set of Steam Trading Cards! We received several requests to add trading card support to the game and thought it would be a great way to kickoff the autumn sale. For those of you unfamiliar with how trading cards work, read up on them here.

    Borderless Window Mode
Here's a great tip if you like to play games in windowed mode, but you don't like to see the default Windows border. Note: If you've been experiencing alt-tab issues in fullscreen mode, try using a borderless window and setting your in-game resolution to max instead.

  • Right-click Poi in your Steam Library
  • Select "Properties"
  • Select "Set Launch Options..."
  • Type: -popupwindow
  • Launch the game!

    Next Update
We're still ironing out the details on our long-term road map, but we've been fixing a lot of bugs and working on some user-requested features in the meantime and should have a more substantial update queued for next week.

Again, BIG THANKS to everyone who has played the game so far, left positive reviews and been active in the community forums -- we appreciate all the support!

    Update #1 (855245)

    Our first update!

We want to give a huge THANK YOU to everyone who's participated in our Early Access so far. And especially those who have reported bugs in our Technical Support forums. This build focuses on fixing a lot of bugs and adding a few new features / tweaks to make the overall experience better.

    New Features / Tweaks

    • Temporary invincibility granted when the player touches lava.
    • Disabled player lives until further balancing can be done.
    • Added a "Reset Local Leaderboards" button in the options menu.
    • Added a "Camera Momentum" slider in the options menu.
    • Changed tutorial text for the Explorer Book to better explain how to open the Explorer Book.
    • Balanced the Shovel so that coins can't be infinitely farmed in a single spot.
    • Added a restart button to the pause menu for all levels (not just for challenge levels).
    • Borderless window mode added (enter -popupwindow as a launch option in Steam).

    Bug Fixes

    • Resetting the level while in over the shoulder mode allowed for "flying."
    • The Lavasaurus Rex fossil was not diggable / dissappeared in Mount Magma.
    • Challenge levels did not reset to their original state when restarted.
    • The Big Spender achievement was broken. Everyone who bought an item should now get the achievement after starting up the new build.
    • Fixed various lightmap issues in Mount Magma.
    • Fixed lighting issues with the player's mouth and the Girl's eyes.
    • Falling rocks in Mount Magma did not have a shadow.
    • Using the shovel while performing a side flip allowed the player to move around while in the dig animation.
    • Standing on a floating island near the player boundary in the Sky caused a massive force to be applied the next time the Explorer's Sail was used.
    • Falling off the Moon caused the game timer to reset and allowed for unrealistic completion times for that Explorer Medallion.
    • The Telescope now works better with inverted control options.
    • The Runaway Fox footprints in Cozy Canyon were not being cleaned up properly.
    • The player can no longer move during the fade out when "Return To Sky" option is selected from the pause menu.
    • Sometimes coins on the Moon were not collectible.
    • The bird in Cozy Canyon now has the right texture.
    • Disabled over the shoulder while looking through the Telescope.

    Global Leaderboard Changes

    • We've introduced a global leaderboard version system for our challenge levels.
    • Since we fixed some big challenge level glitches in this build, there are new leaderboards. If you do not update the game to this build, you can still post times to the old leaderboards, but they will only be visible to people still on the old build.
    • We don't plan on adding a new leaderboard version for every update--only when necessary and with as much advance warning as possible.

If you have any questions, please leave us a comment or make a post over in our forums. Happy exploring!

Poi now available on Early Access!

    Happy Friday everyone!

Poi is now available on Steam Early Access! Woohoo!

Purchasing Poi Early Access means that you can download and play the game forever, starting right now. You'll get all of our new content, as well as the finished version of the game when we officially release.

We believe that you shouldn't charge people full price for a game that is still in-progress, so Poi Early Access will cost a discounted $14.99. Once the game is finished, the price will likely go up. However, there is a special one week 33% launch discount where you can get the game for $10, so don't miss out!

And in the effort of being totally transparent, Poi is still a work-in-progress. There are likely bugs, unfinished and missing content, more art, more SFX, etc that will be added over time.

With that said, we are super excited to have people play and welcome all feedback and suggestions! Early Access is a great way for you guys to help shape the final game and make Poi the best 3D platformer that it can be!

So with all that said, we hope you guys are as excited about this as we are and ask that you please SHARE our Early Access with your friends, leave us an honest review, and participate in our community! We can't do this without you.

Thanks for all your continued support,
    Ben & Paul
