Without Escape is a point and click horror graphic adventure inspired by those first person graphic adventures with pre-rendered backgrounds from the 90s.

One cold winter night, you came home and saw there was nobody there. You remembered that your parents told you a few days back that they were going to visit your grandparents. They are in a town located more than 300Km from where you live, so they would probably stay there the whole weekend. So you didn't give it too much thought. Since it was a rather boring night, you decided to go to bed early.
In the middle of the night, some strange noises woke you up. The first thing that came to your mind was that it probably was someone that probably entered to rob the house. So you decided to investigate what was happening. Even though you found out that there wasn't anybody there, you started noticing several strange horrifying events in your house, until you end up in a nightmarish world fearing for your life.
Will you be able to endure all these horrible events?

- Point and click gameplay.
- Horror story about an increasingly dangerous mystery.
- Many puzzles that will make you think your way through the adventure.
- Gamepad, keyboard and mouse support.
- Atmospheric music that will let you feel the oppressive and horrible situation.
- 1080p pre-rendered backgrounds.
- Multiple endings.
- Secrets and easter eggs.
- Online completion time leaderboards that will offer more replay value for speedrunning.
- Achievements and Trading Cards.
As people say, if something works, don\'t touch it.\n\nAfter the last update I broke one small thing: window resolutions would always be forced to 16:9, ignoring some of the resolutions that are selectable in the settings menu. That has now been fixed.\n\nAlso I did some small adjustments to the leaderboards menu.\n\nAlso the new MacOS build supports both Intel and Apple Silicon. However, Apple Silicon has not been tested, as I lack the means to test it. Please let me know if something is not working.
*Cough* *Cough* ... *COUGH*\n\nAfter so many years since the game\'s release, I had to dust off the game... The game doesn\'t have any known bugs, and it contains all the intended features, so... why this update out of nowhere?\n\nWell, the game is done with Unity, and recently a severe vulnerability has been discovered in the engine that affects many versions of it, from 2017 up until now (https://unity.com/security/sept-2025-01 ). And Without Escape uses a Unity version affected by this issue. So I decided to update the game to a more recent and unaffected version, to prevent any potential issues that could affect the players of my game.\n\nWhile I was updating the game, I also decided to update some small things. After so many years, there have been some advancements in the engine. One of them is the new InputSystem (or not that new anymore), which helps implementing input on more platforms and support more gamepads. It has many advantages compared to the old system, which was horrible, let\'s be honest. So I rewrote my input handling to use this new InputSystem. Now you can use more types of gamepads, and all of them should support vibration. PlayStation pads also have a custom light color depending on whether you have finished the game or not. And this is supported on Windows, Linux and Mac.\n\nI also did some changes to the leaderboards UI. Originally I took the lazy route of opening the Steam overlay to show the leaderboards. Now I did a custom UI to show the leaderboards in-game. Also you can select any leaderboard entry and the profile of that person will be shown.\n\nThis update also has a small disadvantage. Unity deprecated 32bit support on some platforms, so this new version of Without Escape is not compatible with 32bit OSes anymore. But hopefully most people should have a 64bit OS by now.\n\nSo that\'s pretty much it. If there\'s anyone still playing this, I hope they can enjoy it with the relief that the vulnerability has been fixed!

These still are work in progress. What do you think? I still have to change those white buttons in the main menu.

I wrote another article about creating effects that add dynamism to the static backgrounds of Without Escape. This is about a different technique I use to add flickering to lights.

I wrote an article in my blog about one of the tricks I use to add dynamism to static pre-rendered backgrounds. Making them a little bit more dynamic helps to express the intended mood for that room better.
