Haque 1.0.0.4 - Update 5

Hello everybody!

Haque's been out for a whole year and I wanted to celebrate by finally fixing some bugs and adding some cool stuff! I managed to get the Windows version out in time but the Linux and Mac versions will have to wait until I set up Virtual Box again. Shouldn't be too long!

Before I start I want to thank everyone who's reported bugs and sent me encouraging messages. There are a lot of you and I know it's been a long time in between updates but I really needed some time and everyone who sent me bugs seemed to understand that. Thanks!

In particular I want to thank Haque player Cliff who managed to capture a bunch of error codes and bugs from the late game and send them to me. Thanks so much man!

I also want to thank Steve B. who helped solve the Linux startup bug with knowledge that I just plain didn't have. Thanks Steve!

Okay, on to the updates:

Features

  • The exploit where you could equip your familiar has been fixed but you can enable "Pet Equips" in the Game Options menu if you still want to give your cat plate armor and a crossbow!
  • Also in the Game Options menu is the "Skilled Foes" difficulty option! When enabled all the monsters gain access to the same random skill every floor. This makes the game much weirder and much harder, especially with high Spiciness. Even slimes can be a huge threat if they all know Arcane Blast!

Balancing

  • There is now a brief casting time for the "Quake" ability used by the Skeletitan and others. If you're fast and accurate you can interrupt Quakes before they happen!

Fixes

  • Switching between your allies in the backpack when you have none (like in the tutorial) no longer crashes the game.
  • Going from your inventory or stats section to the quirks section with a keyboard or gamepad no longer crashes the game.
  • Casting Holy Flash when other light shafts are present (like from raising a zombie) no longer crashes the game.
  • Shopkeepers are no longer friendly if you enrage one and then make it through a portal. They'll still follow you, but they won't be happy.
  • [REDACTED] now always turns into his beefy self when fighting [BIGSPOILER].
  • An anvil has been added before the fight with the Drake.
  • The mouse no longer interferes with keyboard-only and gamepad controls.

Misc

  • Lock now has a tooltip that describes what it does on the character select screen. I don't think anyone really knew what locking did except me! Sorry.
  • There is a 2% chance a Skeleton Hero's sprite will have a top hat.
  • If a Skeleton Hero is generated with a lute, they'll have a unique sprite!
  • The Visitor has been kicked out of The Pyramid and is now an enemy sometimes on Floor 11.
  • The Sphinx has set up shop in The Pyramid!

Cheats

  • Cheats are here! Well, they've always been here but I'm going to tell you how to do them now. I suggest you at least try to play the game without cheats first but you do you. To activate cheat mode hold Alt + B and then press F9. This will open a cheat window. Once you open the cheat window for the first time you can just hit F9 to open it again. Type a cheat in (don't forget the .) and hit enter to activate the cheat.
  • .dog - When entered on the character select screen, adds hotdog water to the character select screen!
  • .hbd - When entered on the character select screen, adds The Birthday Boy to the character select screen!
  • .bartholomew - When entered on the character select screen, adds Parcels to the character select screen!
  • .continue - When entered on the character select screen, adds Paul, Nick, and Josh from Continue? to the character select screen!
  • .copacetic - When entered on the character select screen, adds Satchbag to the character select screen!
  • .pm - When entered on the character select screen, adds Imogen from Project Maiden to the character select screen!
  • .jingubang - Adds the Jingubang to your character's inventory.
  • .Brokenblade- Adds the Broken Blade to your character's inventory.
  • .tshirt- Adds a random tshirt to your character's inventory.
  • .bossloot- Adds a random piece of boss loot to your character's inventory.
  • .frog - Adds the Frog Charm to your character's inventory.
  • .heal - Restores your character's and all friendly characters' HP and MP to the max.
  • .bighp - Gives you an absurd amount of maximum HP.
  • .fear - Makes all enemies run away when they see your character.
  • .boom - Destroys all enemies at once (careful, it's loud).
  • .bust - Destroys all the walls on a map.
  • .breb - Spawns a prisoner friend!
  • .dosh - Spawns a bunch of treasure chests!
  • .merch - Spawns a friendly merchant!
  • .forge - Opens the forge screen even if you aren't near one!
  • .freeze - Stops everyone but your character from moving for a very long time.
  • .righty - Makes your character right handed.
  • .lefty - Makes your character left handed.
  • .steve - Activates Steve Mode. Names everyone on the map Steve.

Thanks again for a great year and Happy Thanksgiving if you celebrate it!

Peace,

Kevin Cole, Developer

Haque 1.0.0.32 - Update 4 - April 6, 2018

Hello everyone!

Small update to Windows and Linux versions to add some Spring-flavored content and fix some bugs. Mac update will come later!

Features

  • Added Spring map to levels 5-7 which includes Mandrakes, Cobras, mace-wielding Bears, and a special Gate-guard.
  • Added ability to look at targeted enemies' flavor text and stats with shift (left bumper on controllers).

Balancing

  • Reduced Chipper quirk's damage minimum from 10 to 8. This means some enemies will take one or two more hits before dying.

Fixes

  • Fixed a bug where pets would sometimes hate you forever.
  • Fixed a crash when looking at your inventory during a very late-game plot important moment.
  • Fixed a bug where the Perseverance achievement wouldn't unlock. It should unlock when starting a new game after dying 3 or more times.

Thanks again to everyone who reported bugs and reviewed the game and sent me encouraging emails. Warms my dang heart when I hear people care about this game.
Peace!

Haque 1.0.0.31 - Update 3 - February 14, 2018

Hey everybody, this update is just to fix a few problems and bring Linux and Mac up to speed with Windows.

Fixes

  • Fixed crash resulting from mousing over an item on the floor with the Backpack screen open.
  • Fixed stats displaying incorrectly when mousing over them.

Mac users, unfortunately this update will reset your save data because of weird GameMaker/Mac/Steam interactions. If you were in the middle of something and would rather not start over you can access version 1.0.0.2 by opting in to the "lastversion" beta branch under Haque's Properties. All your save data should be there and fine. Playing one version will not overwrite another's data.

Thanks to everyone who reported problems, I really appreciate your help!

Enjoy, and happy Valentine's Day!

Haque 1.0.0.3 - Update 2 - February 7, 2018

Features

  • The Stats and Backpack screen have been merged into a single screen where you can view your character’s stats, items, quirks and skills all at once.
  • Added ability to toggle between allied characters on the new stat screen. This makes it easier to equip allies, change their AI, and view their stats.
  • Added full controller navigation to Stats/Backpack screen. No more switching to mouse control to equip your pets!
  • Added a key that toggles ally AI that defaults to C on keyboards and Y/triangle on controllers. This replaces the stat screen button.
  • Added an additional effect to Herbs. Feeding an Herb to a Cat will now boost its Speed for a while.
  • Added a brief celebration effect when freeing Prisoners from jail.

Balancing

  • Added a short cooldown time to Necrotize, Deep Freeze, and Evil Eye. This is meant to encourage caster type characters to switch up their playstyle and reduce caster spamming.
  • Reduced the likelihood of high damage weapons spawning.
  • Increased the likelihood of rare weapons spawning after level 4.
  • Reduced bonus health given to Zombies. This is meant to keep horde sizes on the manageable side by increasing Zombie churn.
  • Reduced Zombie attack speed. Zombies needed another small nerf and this made the most thematic sense.
  • Reduced Djinni Health slightly. Djinn had higher stats than other playable species which they really didn’t need considering Arcane Blast is such a beast.
  • Reduced Djinni Ice Affinity. This makes them weaker to Ice damage and makes it harder to obtain the coveted Ice Elemental Arcane Blast.
  • Reduced Jotun Health slightly. Jotuns, like Djinn, were just a little too good.
  • Increased Undead Ice Affinity. Ice damage was becoming too universally good and Undead needed a small bump. Good news for Skelly Heroes!
  • Reduced Noble Necro Affinity. Eagles and Vampires now take just slightly more Necro Damage.
  • Reduced amount of HP granted per second from eating Crystal Residue. HP gained is still roughly equal to that gained by eating one piece of Jerky.
  • Changed tactics of some bosses with long range abilities. Sea Witch, Pharaohmancer, and others will now behave defensively (run away) at certain HP thresholds.
  • Increased size of the Sea Witch arena.
  • Increased Sea Witch’s Affinities.
  • Changed Sea Witch’s second phase skills from Sneak to Dashcut. Sneak wasn’t as exciting as I thought it was, and Sea Witch kept getting cornered.
  • Added the Hellfire Weapon quirk to Pharaohmancer’s khopesh.
  • Reduced wait time on newly summoned creatures. Summoned creatures are no longer surprised by enemies when first summoned. More good news for Skelly Heroes!
  • Increased Health of Manticores and Manticore Juniors. Manticore fights are now longer and tougher with more opportunities to be poisoned.
  • Increased Android Accuracy. This makes Androids slightly scarier but it also increases the value of their inedible corpses.

Fixes

  • Fixed crash that occurred when out of idle banter scenes. This crash also may have been responsible for the bosswarp crash.
  • Fixed crash that occurred by petting pets that weren’t there.
  • Fixed softlock where sometimes effect animations would hang forever. If an effect hangs, it will be automatically destroyed after 12 seconds.
  • Fixed boss achievements not unlocking after beating game.
  • Fixed holes in the desert zone perimeter that allowed players to leave the zone and wander across an endless void.
  • Fixed bows generating arrows while inside The Megachest.
  • Fixed Speed bonuses displaying incorrectly in item descriptions.
  • Fixed Codex description of Frost Boulder.
  • Fixed Old Man’s grammar on Level 2.
  • Fixed Skeletitan banter cameo.

Misc

  • Haque version 1.0.0.3 for Mac will go live in a few days! Sorry for the wait. Codesigning is maybe more complicated than it needs to be.
  • There is a potential issue on level -3 where some Macs may only display a white screen. I could not reproduce this issue but disabling CRT effects in the A/V settings may remove the white screen.
  • Mac screenshots are still upside down. I have no idea why this is happening and I find the issue both saddening and amusing.
  • Next update will feature a little more added content and the new Spring event. There may be some hints about what’s coming in this update.

This was kind of a big one! I will try to reduce the amount of time between updates in the future. Thank you as always for your feedback!

Haque 1.0.0.2 - Update 1 - November 29, 2017

Features

  • Penguins have been added as Ultra Rare pets but will become Common in December, January, and February or year-round if playing on Linux.
  • Added Jumbo Krill as Penguin treats
  • Added Duel Gear, a rare forgeable armor piece that increases Critical Hit chance.
  • Hovering your mouse over an Item on the ground will reveal that Items name. Right-clicking will show a description of that item.
  • Reminder prompt for picking up items added to Tutorial and Level 1
  • A handful of new names and name-elements have been added to the name generator.
  • Screenshot button added to Game Over screen
  • It is now possible to take screenshots with Steam however Steam takes two screenshots every time the screenshot button is pressed. Were uh gonna figure that one out.

Balancing

  • Bouldertoss is now slower, slightly less accurate and has a slightly longer cooldown.
  • Bouldertosss starting damage has been changed from BaseAttack+[3-18] to BaseAttack+[4-10]
  • Bouldertosss damage can now be augmented by quirks like Brawn, Sneaking, Raging, and Bleeding.
  • Boreal creatures (like Jotuns and Penguins) now have a penalty to their Fire Affinity.
  • Pet Hoodoo quirk now also increases the chance of Familiars remembering to use skills.
  • Ring of the Dead now reanimates your character at 50% health instead of 100%
  • Straight Arrow no longer transfers through same-material mainhand forging.

Fixes

  • Fixed game crash when using Autocombat (aka the T glitch)
  • Fixed game crash when hovering over the Jester Mask in your inventory
  • Fixed animation hang on magic casted by allies on the edge of your sightlines
  • Fixed gamepad button prompts displaying when no gamepad is connected.
  • Fixed game not saving settings when backing out of the control rebind menu with Deny
  • Fixed minor animation glitch for Bardsong and Power Attack.
  • Fixed extra long boss names not displaying properly

Misc

  • There is a known issue on some Linux machines where Haques framerate will not be limited and it will run insanely fast. Turning V-synch on in the options menu is a possible workaround. This is apparently a Game Maker issue but were investigating a fix.
  • Inventory Text is slightly uglier on Mac. This will be fixed next update.
  • Removed Hook & Pull AI debug messages.
  • Quickened Ice Wall and Lingering Ice Wall have been removed. Rapid
  • Summon and Stable Summon now impart their effects to summoned glaciers.
  • War Fans Underhanded quirk has been replaced by Poison Hit, an identical quirk.
  • It is still extremely cumbersome to equip your pet and followers with items from a controller. Were working on a big UI update that will fix this but its still a bug for now.

Thanks for your feedback and for a great first week of Haque!
