2024 Bscotch Wrapped

Hello, fellow time traveler! The new year is nigh, so it's time for me to pop my head up, blink a few times, then ask, "... what... year... is it?" and try to figure out what's happened since 2023. A lot, it turns out!

Crashlands 2

The biggest thing for 2024 was, of course, Crashlands 2 becoming nearly complete. Back when we announced the game in 2023 we thought we'd have it done by the end of this year. We were optimistic on that front, but not for lack of trying! To give you an idea of just how hard we've been working over the past year:
  • We added 700 new art assets to the game, consisting of 2200 parts (animated elements, animation frames, variants, etc). We had to add a whole new artist to the team to make this happen!
  • We added 80,000 words to the game's text (quests, item descriptions, etc), bringing the total to 130,000. That's like... two novels? 100,000 words have been translated so far, thanks to the work of dozens of translators and editors.
  • We added 3,100 new assets (items, resources, characters, quest nodes, etc).
  • We updated the World Map 2,300 times and the asset database 2,200 times.
  • We added 18,000 lines of code.
  • We built and tested 333 versions of the game. Since we have separate builds for each platform (Windows, iOS, and Android), that's a total of 999 builds!
That's a lot! Especially with our tiny content team (2 artists, 1 game programmer, 1 writer). And even more so given that our team also added two more entire humans to the mix! (Welcome to the world, Ruby and Jack!) But hey, we're still on track for a Q1 2025 release and we'll be making the official release date announcement Soon!

Crashlands (Original)

Some cool things happened for the original Crashlands in 2024, too:
  • We sold more copies this year than in the past several years combined, thanks to excitement around Crashlands 2 and to some very aggressive discounting.
  • Floydson did a complete playthrough of Crashlands. It's amazing to see the entire game compressed down to 2.5 hours and the commentary is hilarious.

Levelhead

Levelhead's community is still making levels and doing cool stuff:
  • Our first time in Games Done Quick! IllegallySam beat the campaign in 46 minutes, which is wild considering I still haven't even beat the game at all...
  • Players published 13,000 new levels, 2,000 of which graduated into the Tower.
  • Player FlowArt takes the lead for most-played levels: 250 days of playtime accumulated from 2.5 million plays!
  • Player Cire takes the record for most published levels (884), and also has the most levels in the Tower this year (229). Player Sabre is just behind on total levels.
  • Player Lommuck Fangiant leads in Ribbons with a staggering total of nearly 18,000! Enough to make me suspicious... In second place we have BeneficialExcellence with over 6,900.
  • Player JuiceBox has the lead in Shoes (9,600+), followed by Cire in second place with 8,607.

What's Next?

Next up is getting Crashlands 2's release date announced, and then getting the dang thing finally done. We're tired, but still so excited because we absolutely cannot wait to get it into your hands. We've poured our hearts, souls, time, blood, sweat, tears, and everything else we have into this game, and we'll be sharing it with you soon!

FIN

With that, it's time to close out this edition of the Bscotch Ballyhoo. Until next time, go wishlist Crashlands 2 on Steam, if you haven't already! Oh, and our 500th podcast episode (!) comes out on January 1st, 2025! Did we plan that? Nope! Wait, I meant YES DEFINITELY we're super good at planning... Your Spacetime Anomaly, Adam Coster Webslinger @ Bufferedvideo Stillloadingans P.S. Bscotch is now on Bluesky since that site's really popping off. Sam and myself are on there, too. We'll post little previews, videos, behind-the-scenes commentary, blah blah blah over there now and then, so check us out!

Crashlands? More like Cozylands!

Hey there, fellow adventurer!
Welcome to the latest edition of the Bscotch Ballyhoo Newsletter. This time it's all about the cozier side of Crashlands 2, plus an update to our release window. Let's get into it.

Crashlands, but make it Cozy

While Crashlands is an action-adventure game at its core, it has all kinds of cozy/wholesome elements: pets, farming, fishing, home-building & decor, and a delightfully weird cast of characters to befriend.
In the sequel, we wanted to let players relax more deeply into the cozy side of the game, so we made all of those features more satisfying so that you can really lean into them. And we've got a new trailer to let you experience that vibe right now! Yeah, there's still a lot of combat in Crashlands 2. But we've also expanded the combat styles so that you can stay a bit more removed from the action if that's your jam:
  • Story Mode: Play on the lowest difficulty setting so that you can focus on the story and the cozy elements of the game with less combat stress.
  • Environmental Mastery: The world is super dynamic, and you can use this to avoid direct combat by leading enemies into environmental hazards and tricking them into fighting each other.
  • Sneaky Little Sneak: By turning yourself invisible, buffing your speed, using distance weapons and traps, letting your pet help you out, and other tricks, you can keep yourself quite out of harm's way.

Base-Building Deep Dive

Since a lot of the coziness of Crashlands 2 comes from the homestead you build for yourself (and your new friends!), we've put together another Ballyhoo Video to go with the cozy trailer. It's about how base-building works in Crashlands 2. Give it a watch: you'll see that things have come a long way since the original!

Release Window Update

Alright, let's rip the bandage off: Crashlands 2 will not be launching in 2024 like we planned. When we announced the game in June 2023 we thought that "2024" was a wide enough, far-away-enough target that it was a safe timeline. Turns out it wasn't, but we were only off by a little bit: we'll be launching Crashlands 2 very early in 2025.
So at least it's a small delay. But why delay at all? The short answer is that it's not really a delay, but a miscalculation. All timelines are just guesses, and we guessed wrong. The longer answer is that games have 3 levels of being "done", and we can't quite get Crashlands 2 through all three by the end of the year.

The Levels of Done-ness:

[olist]
  • Content-Complete: Everything we intend to be in the game is in there, in its finished state, and fully tested by our team.
  • Player-Feedback-Adjusted: The Content-Complete game has been played by a bunch of people outside of our team and we've used their feedback to fix balance issues, make confusing stuff clear, and fix any bugs we missed. (We'll be enlisting a few dozen volunteers from the community for this; if you want to be involved in that, keep an eye on our Discord!)
  • Launch-Ready: We've passed all checks from our publishing and store partners, the text has been fully translated into all target languages and checked for errors, and we have the green light to launch from everyone involved.
  • [/olist] We'll be through the Content-Complete phase and will have made a lot of progress on the other two by the end of this year. The winter holidays and New Year throw a wrench into things, but it'll all get finished up pretty quickly in the new year!

    FIN

And with that, it's time to close out this edition of the Bscotch Ballyhoo. Until next time, go wishlist Crashlands 2 on Steam if you haven't already! Your Freshly Baked Cookies, Adam Coster Webslinger @ Buttersnuggle Shenapigans P.S. I've made those launch-delay panels available as a meme template, ready for your silly goofs!

    v1.4 Couch Co-op Update

Player 2 can now play as Juicebox!

Juicebox's S.T.R.A.W. not only harvests resources but also brings additional firepower to the battlefield. But watch out, the creatures of Woanope are gonna try to stomp him, too!

But Juicebox has a few special moves up his mechanical sleeves - He can heal and shield flux, cause turbo and berserking, and even pull enemies with the drop of dbot!

And he's a great fishing partner!

    How to Juicebox

If your device is connected with 2 controllers, player 2 can just press Start to join.
If you only have 1 controller, you can go to the Settings Menu from the title screen or the Control Settings menu from the pause screen and enable the Assign Controller to Player 2 option.

    Other Quality of Life Improvements

    Controller Support
    • Added the lock-on-target function to the left shoulder button
    • Right joystick is now used to select targets
    • Added Switch controller layout in addition to ABXY and Shapes
    • World map filtering system now also has controller support
    BSID Interface
    • Loading time has been significantly sped up
    • Multiple perk-unlocks will only show one message now instead of hogging the screen top forever
    • Notification popups are much more subdued now
    Story Mode
    • The Yellowstone outpost has been updated
    • The beginning of Bawg quests are streamlined to let you get back in action faster
    • Wild vommas have made the decision to become more active. Now they walk around!

    Happy Juiceboxing with your friends!

Update 1.3 - "The Combover" has ARRIVED!

We had this big bald spot in Crashlands’ game design. The combat fell flat over time and player choice started feeling a bit sparse. After a long look in the mirror we realized that we already had all the wispy design strands necessary to get maximum fun-coverage... we just needed to comb them into alignment. SO THAT’S WHAT WE’RE DOIN’! The COMBOver Patch features an overhaul of combat with 36 new weapons and a brand new COMBO system, plus new unlockables like the Hardcore game mode in which you can only die once, the Creative mode for those who like building magnificent bases or turning their maps into pixel art, and new achievements! To get all the patch note details head over to ye olde Butterblog and read until those sparkling eyes of yours BLEED. This update is ginormous and has been in the works for quite a few months, so we're really excited to finally get it in your hands! ALRIGHT BYE.

Crashlands launches on Linux (Ubuntu + SteamOS)

Heyoooo! We're happy to announce that after months of bug-squashing in Beta, Crashlands now officially supports Linux! Our brave testers experienced it all, from bugged HTTP functions and dropped scrolling controls to UI's that appeared whenever they freakin' felt like it! Just look at this overlayed mess:
We'd like to say a big thanks to those Linux testers who paved the way for today's launch. While this build was more complicated than we anticipated, it really showed us the patience and warmth of the Linux gaming community. So, without further ado, Put some Flux in your Tux and have a great holiday! Stay frosty, Sam P.S. - We'll be destroying any new bugs in the days and weeks to come. Feel free to join other Linux users in the Crashlands Linux discord and let us know if anything is broke! (https://discord.gg/GXZQsh4)

Crashlands hits 500k units and celebrates with a PRICE DROP!

STEAM PEOPLES! STEAPEOPLES! STEAPLES! STAPLES?! Crashlands just sold 500k units total across all platforms! And because we want everyone in the world to play this game we’re doing something WHACK: Starting today we’re going to drop the Steam price from $14.99 to $9.99! And it’s 40% off on mobile, if you’re into that sort of thing (App Store | Google Play). On behalf of all the Butterscotches, I’d like to extend a dainty, velvety soft hand of thanks for all of your support over the last year. Since Crashlands launched we’ve been able to bring joy to an unbelievable number of people and expand our studio. We even got to go to PAX last year for the first time ever, which was rad… and also very smelly. Before we get bleary-eyed and ugly cry all over the internet because we love you so much, we’re going to flee. Why? We’ve got some things to do for this very game! We’ve heard your feedback regarding the game’s grindiness and some controller issues, so we’re going to tackle those shortly. Leave your (equally venomous and loving) comments below. We’ll probably not read them because we’re scared of the internet now that we’ve launched a game on it. Stay frosty, sam P.S. - if you want to hear our soothing voices and discover what we’ve got in the works, listen to our podcast. It’s weekly, not weakly. DO IT: https://soundcloud.com/butterscotch-shenanigans/ep110 P.P.S. - if you're a Linux user interested in helping us get Crashlands working on your OS, slap your email address in here. We'll be in touch.

Juicemancy & Controller Support HAVE ARRIVED!

Q: What does every game on the planet need? A: MORE JUICE. Watch the Juicemancy Trailer! The Juicemancy patch for Crashlands contains a brand new customization system, called Juicemancy, which allows you to channel FLABAJILLIJOLTS of energy into your equipment to upgrade, change, and reroll stats. Now you can make a legit class out of Flux. You'll just need to make it to the Bawg and hunt down a mysterious energy source first... We also added WASD and Controller support so you can play the game however you want! But only if how you want to play it is on a controller or with WASD keys. Now you can take all that steamsaltysteamsaltysteamsalty you've been hurling our way for not having multiple control schemes and sell it on the vast Salt Market, only to realize years from now that your barony over salt products hasn't filled that burning hole in your heart. If you're the sort of masochist who enjoys reading patch notes, check here for all the changes. Also we were named in TIME's Top 10 Games of 2016. To celebrate we're doing nothing because we do what we want. Stay frosty, sam ps - also you can totally stack your stats now and swap out the ones you don't like. OR DON'T, YOU GENERALIST.

    Sweet, sweet community tools

Heyo! We're now waist deep in the Quality of Life patch, and as such have gone slightly off the radar! However, our brand new spankin' Crashlands community has been hard at work making cool things to make your gaming a bit easier. First up, the fan art is starting to roll in. The latest submission by Qloun (above) is phenomenal and features everyone's favorite Crashlands food... Baconweed. You can check out more of his work on his facebook page! Next, if you want more of the Crashlands music in your life, Fatbard (the composer duo) chopped up a bunch of the most requested sound effects and songs into fantastic ring tones. Now your phone can randomly shriek "IT'S SO BIIIIIIG!" in inappropriate places! Lastly, u/Gapplay created a handy Crashlands database tool and shared it on the subreddit. It's extremely useful, as you can search for things by type ("Trinket", "Weapon", etc.) as well as by keywords in the description. Want to make an ALL POISON ALL THE TIME build? Now you can easily find everything that heightens "Poison" damage and go to town! Thanks for the support and playing the crap out of Crashlands. We'll be addressing the most common requests in the Quality of Life patch and have been working with the gamemaker team to get that pesky ASCII username bug fixed. Until next time, check out the podcast and hit us up on twitter if you want to say hey! Stay frosty, samuel

Bug-fix patch closing in Podcast ready for your ears

Heyo! Things have quieted down enough that Adam and Seth got time to cobble together a patch that fixes nearly all the bugs that we've gotten reported (and then some). We'll be pushing it out SOON, and you can see the patchnotes and get in on the beta if you're getting antsy. We also recorded our Post-Launch podcast! If you want to hear our thoughts on the Crashlands launch and all the insanity around it, pop some headphones in and let us massage your eardrums. KGOTTAGETBACKTOWORKBYE. -samuel

    Podcastin' Tomorrow!

We broke the 300 reviews threshold, Crashlands is on the back-end of its launch week explosion, and we're starting to be able to sleep again! HUZZAH! We'll be recording our weekly podcast tomorrow afternoon - if you want to ask a question or vote up others you can (WOAH COMMUNITY INTERACTIVITY WHAT!?) and we'll tackle them with as much good humor as we can manage. We're a bit out of whack from the flurry of launchweek. Today all of us ate sandwiches in silence at Jimmy Johns in a scene reminiscent of the final, post-credits scene in the Avengers, where they're gathered at the Shwarma table. NPR is coming by my apartment on Wednesday for an interview about making games in STL, and we're getting some follow-on coverage from youtubers and other slower press outlets. The Crashlands train rolleth! Thanks a ton for making this launch a success and helping us get some eyeballs from some big influencers. We're glad this whacky thing we made has found a place in your shriveled, icy hearts :D Stay frosty, Samuel

HOLY CRAP YOU DID IT ( some dev chats)

TotalBiscuit just tweeted about Crashlands... You guys are great. UPDATE ON THINGS WE WERE WAITING FOR:

    • Kotaku posted a glowing review
    • PC Gamer posted a not-quite-so-glowing but still good review (73/100)
    • TotalBiscuit tweeted about Crashlands
    • We got TouchArcade's Game of the Week
    • Over 1500 concurrent players on steam alone, and growing!
    • Current Metascore of 83 on PC and 100 (!) on iOS
    • Adam (the tools and web brother) seems to have fixed most of our server problems. It only cost him 6 months of longevity due to the stress! SYNC AWAAAAY!
One last thing we'd like to get to wrap this launch UP: NOW GATHER ROUND FOR SOME DEV CHATS! There's something I'd like to note about our design choices with Crashlands that I see in some of the comments and that the PC Gamer review touched on somewhat: This game was designed to be platform agnostic, meaning to play equally well on PC and Mobile. This put us in the precarious position of possibly being unclaimed by EITHER platform, since gamers on each occasionally have hard biases against another platform. Initially, this took the form of us stepping into threads to clear up the dual points of the game either being "A shitty mobile game trying to get on PC" or "a PC game trying to get a shitty port onto mobile." Now that the quality of the game has been established this is less of an issue, but for those here who are concerned that Crashlands' presence on mobile SOMEHOW means it is an inferior game on Steam, it doesn't; what it means you can play it wherever you want however you want and it remains a great, cohesive experience. Further, nearly all of our Beta testers (whom we used for the final tuning of the game's balance and design improvements) primarily played on PC - that's what the game is actually most optimized for, from a feedback standpoint! Which leads to the question of pricepoints on Steam ($15) vs Mobile ($5), for which the answer is 2-fold: 1) We believe Crashlands is easily a $20 value. But we want people to play on everything they have (crossplatforminess!), so we split the price for a buyer between the two. 2) The mobile market has massively suppressed pricing - putting a game on that market for $15 from a generally unknown studio would be a complete financial disaster. Trust us - we did it with our first game (for $2.99) and it fell on its face so hard it burst through the crust of the earth and nearly destroyed our fledgling studio with the resulting magmic eruption. Hope that answers a few of the most frequently asked / assumed things! Thanks for helping make this launch RIDICULOUS. (Seriously, we made high-pitched yet-still-extremely-manly noises when we saw the Totalbiscuit tweet). Feel free to drop your thoughts below, but remember to not be a jerk. We're all humans here, playing games because we love them or making games because we love to. Stay frosty, samuel 1/3rd of our 3 brother studio

Further, nearly all of our Beta testers (whom we used for the final tuning of the game's balance and design improvements) primarily played on PC - that's what the game is actually most optimized for, from a feedback standpoint! A note about the controls: The game is designed to work extremely well with a mouse, which makes it work perfectly on a touch device. However, this control scheme choice is viewed by some on PC as a holdover that's sprung from the game's presence on mobile, which is an understandable assumption but a bit odd if you extend it to other PC games that rely on the same scheme. For example, Diablo uses extensive mouse control - but its lack of presence on mobile means its controls are considered only with regard to how well they work, not as though they're a necessity for touch screens. (For those of you who simply prefer controllers/WASD movement, that's a different thing entirely!) All of this leads to the final question of different pricepoints on Steam ($15) vs Mobile ($5), for which the answer is 2-fold: 1) We believe Crashlands is easily a $20 value. WHAT A FREAKIN' DAY, TEAM

HEYOOHOOOOO! Crashlands launch has gone really well! Let's run down the LIST OF GOODNESS:

    • Nothing broke (too terribly, anyway)
    • Steam, Apple, and Google all did their part to feature/promote the game
    • Our players nearly universally love the game (note: If you have a bug, report it to us, not in the review section you MANIACS!)
    • The gaming press seems to be catching on to the idea that Crashlands is a great game that can be played anywhere, instead of thinking it's either a) a pc port to mobile or b) a mobile port to pc. We'll slowclap for them when they finally get it figured.
    • Forums, subreddit, and BSID usage is up approxmiately 1 BILLION PERCENT.
We're still hoping for a few things to happen, which you can help with:
    • 300 Steam reviews (Drop us one if you haven't yet - THEY'RE LIKE WORDGOLD)
    • a Total Biscuit WTF IS show (tweet at him here!)
    • PC Gamer and IGN reviews
Now we're back with our faces to the Butterscotch grindstone to iron out a few of those reported bugs and technical glitches, and then we can begin work on the first update! HWHWOHOHOHOHOHOHOOOOOOAYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE -samuel
