Hey everyone, Seabass here! You may have noticed that I went silent for a while... I spent about a year working on a new game that I feel is my greatest work and one that I am actually very proud of. I poured my soul into this game and really wanted to create a passion fueled experience. The soundtrack is HUGE, there is a LOT of content, and of course a healthy dose of my silly Seabass humor. It would mean a lot to me if you could share with me how you feel about this new direction I've taken. https://store.steampowered.com/app/882210/Duke_of_Defense/

Hey rockstars and washed-up-has-been rockstars! Today we would like to take a moment to celebrate/discuss how far this game has come. Tycoon games have always been held to a pretty high standard in regards to balance and pacing. The truth to it is that no game will be perfect for everyone and Rock God Tycoon is no exception. We've read reviews praising the game for being the very best tycoon game they've ever played! But we have also read reviews stating that this is the absolute worst game they've ever played. Neither side is wrong, they just enjoy different games. With that out of the way... We are proud of how far this game has come and now we will go on a short journey following the development of Rock God Tycoon.
Was it a coincidence?
Many years ago Panos (the artist) and I met through a website called IndieDB in its job section. He had made a post requesting to team up with a programmer to create some musical tycoon game. I had never wanted to work with anyone but for some reason this seemed like a good opportunity to give it a shot. We got together in a Skype call and before we knew it we had worked the entire day on our prototype "Metalhead Tycoon". I still have the original executable and let me tell you it was a horrible game. We then posted the game on Steam greenlight where it sat for quite a while with little to no votes or recognition and reasonably so. I went on to create another game after splitting up with Panos.
Another stroke of luck
The game I had been working on had been approved on Greenlight and coincidentally so had Metalhead Tycoon. Panos rebranded the game at some point as "Rock God Tycoon" with all new artwork. He and I talked for the first time in a LONG time where he told me that he wanted to recreate what we had started a year prior. Again without a real reason I said, "Sure!" Days later we were both working on Rock God Tycoon! During this time I was working 40 hour weeks at a retail job and was still developing my other game (which was early access at the time) while Panos was still going to college full-time. It was only by sheer luck that we managed to get the game all the way to early access 1.5 years later.
Shocking responses
Panos and I are usually pretty cynical people and so we expected the game to flop once we entered Early Access. We were absolutely blown away when the game sold well enough for us to pay bills and all the meanwhile we were maintaining 95%+ in Steam reviews. Never before did we feel so motivated to work on this game. There were regular posts with pages of feedback and suggestions, and just so much positive/encouraging energy all around. I don't think either of us had been that happy with ourselves before.
Fast forward
The game went into full release in February of 2017 and we again were surprised by how many people had been waiting on the game to leave Early Access. It was shortly after that time that Panos was getting a job in another country and I had to move forward with a new project. Many people felt we had abandoned the game so we came back and did a massive overhaul. We implemented an expanded tension system that took away a lot of the normal "busk 24/7" grind that people had told us was ruining the experience. It took about a week if I recall and when we pushed it out we got mixed results. It seemed that nobody was bothered or impressed so we just left it at that. The core of the game isn't going to change with tweaks and new features.
Where we are now
Panos is working for a game company in Germany now doing what he loves and paying bills like an adult. I'm working on my 4th game whilst finishing putting my previous title onto consoles. Both of us are proud of how far we've come and with the overall experience of Rock God Tycoon (from a developer's point of view). We started with nothing, no help, and no recognition. We had to claw our way here and every inch of it was gruesome but worth it.
So why did you write all this?
There is the occasional review/comment that Rock God Tycoon is dead. Saying a game is dead puts out a very negative idea that a game is completely broken and abandoned. This is obviously not the case and we wanted to clear the air. No we are no longer working on Rock God Tycoon (actively) and we have both since moved on to new projects/jobs. We have to make bills, grow as people, and progress in our careers. To say this game is dead is to say that we didn't put 1.5 years (and additionally updates/patches for 5 months, not mentioning minor fixes even recently) and that just sucks to hear. Especially from users with 40+ hours put into the game. I hope this post was an interesting read! Seabass's Twitter (programmer) Panos's Twitter (artist) Keep rockin' on! ːRockSignː

You requested it so we delivered it
Character customizations are now unlocked for both bandmates and players. This means you can change your drummers hairstyle or beard. No limitations besides the exception of gender and skin tone.
New shirts
Panos got around to creating some cool new shirts. Take a peep! [/img] These definitely are more unique than the other shirts currently available ingame so you should consider trying them out.
More polish
It appears we overlooked some minor details in character customization such as the scrollbar not checking for the mouse properly and some buttons not being shown as disabled. Fear not as all is well now. [/img]
Changelog 1.2.1.0
- Characters (both player and bandmates) can be fully edited now with the exceptions of gender and skin tone
- Added five new shirts
- Improved mouse checking for scrollbars in character customization
- Beard/Beard color buttons are now be visually disabled for female characters

Improving basd on your feedback
After a much needed break from development we're coming back to improve the quality of life for RGT. In the coming days Panos plans to bring in some more customization options for characters!
Time freeze bug
We've heard a lot of people bring up the time freezing bug and yet a ton of players were able to play upwards of 50 hours without any issues. Since it didn't seem urgent it got pushed off for a while but we're finally attempting to resolve it. I've made some changes to the code surrounding record deals and booked events that should hopefully prevent anymore time freezes from occuring. As always your feedback is crucial so if you still get the bug please exit the game and email me a copy of your save file so that I may further diagnose the issue.
Windowed mode is back
After a number of complaints we switched the game to borderless windowed instead of normal windowed but it turns out the majority actually prefers windowed mode as that allows the window to be resized freely. So we've returned to that.
Attempting to increase compatibility
This part is a bit technical but we've reduced texture page sizes in hopes of making the game more functional for less capable video cards. Not sure if this will actually solve the problems we've heard from the community but we are hopeful.
Changelog 1.2.0.8
- Reduced standard texture page size from 8192x8192 to 4096x4096
- Switched the game back to Windowed mode
- Fixed a possible time stop bug with album finalization
- Fixed a possible time stop bug with booked events such as gigs and video clips
- Drug Dealer image is properly removed from memory when the popup menu is closed
- Minor optimizations to script referencing throughout the game

Your requests have been heard
The past few months have been fantastic and we really appreciate all the support, feedback, and kindness we've seen from the community. One major request we've heard has been the need for copy/pasting in the song editor. It was not originally implemented due to the complexity of it. As a way of giving back we've spent the time and implemented copy/pasting! We are also discussing adding more content to the game so you can expect that at some point.
Thanks to everyone who purchased Rock God Tycoon during this weekly sale!
You guys rock! We would love to be able to pursue game development full-time so seeing all of you awesome people join in and support the game really means a lot to us.
Changelog 1.2.0.7
- General improvements
- Implemented copy/pasting in the song editor

A number of people have complained about the difficulty of the game and while many people feel that it is still far from difficult... Tension events
Tension reducing events reduce tension by a certain percentage with each band member. This has unfortunately led to a lot of confusion. There were some bugs with tension changes not being saved properly but this has all been fixed.
Extended resolution support
I recently acquired a 4k monitor and realized that Rock God Tycoon doesn't support resolutions beyond 1920x1080. Upon seeing this I decided it was time for a small upgrade to the display system. The game window now centers properly for different resolutions and I've added support for 1366x768 as well as 1360x768 (not true 16:9 which previously led to various issues).
New hair bug?
Not sure why but this started happening... [/img] I'm assuming it is due to the latest updates made to Game Maker but I can't say for sure. It is only this single hair style so it'll just be like this for now.
Changelog 1.2.0.3
Minor Changes
- Resolution settings have been extended and now support resolutions as high as 3840x2160, and odd ones such as 1366x768, and 1360x768
- Block booking of tension reducing events if there isn't enough money
- Display available money on tension reducing events (except drug dealers)
- Window now centers properly with different resolutions
- Fixed issues with tension reduction in tension reducing events
- Hair bug with a single hairstyle, not sure why but can't fix it.

Reducing the grind/difficulty
Update 1.2.0.0 resulted in an endless grind where money was barely obtainable. The game progression was slowed to nearly a stop and so we listened to what the community had to say about it. As a result of your experiences and voices we have made a number of balance changes. You should be able to progress a lot easier now and a few of the more harsh changes we made have been undone.
Polishing changes
The game now runs in borderless windowed mode which should be a lot less annoying for the majority of users (especially content creators). Additionally I spent about an hour re-writing all of the rectangle drawing in the game to use a more optimal solution that while visually is the same, should result in much better performance. You may also notice a new help icon in the hiring screen if you start a new game. This was added to help prevent new users from using all of their income on hiring initially which often leads to an instant game over.
Changelog 1.2.0.2
Balancing
- Busking income changed from $7-$10, to $10-$13
- Busking fan gain changed from 0-3 to 1-5
- Gig burnout gain rate reduced by 50%
- Reduced weed overdose gain by 25%
- Reduced city hype requirement from 25% of city population to 20%
- Overdose threshold raised by 20%
- Overdose chance reduced by 12.5%
- Tooltip button added to hiring screen for first time hiring budget
- Optimized rectangle draws with custom rectangle drawing, difference should be noticeable for low-end users
- Changed windowed mode to borderless
- Stripclub in Dover now has a background image

At long last!
Generally I would write out a few paragraphs regarding the update but you can find loads of information about this update in the previous two news posts we posted. Where is the update at?
We are still working on the update and at the moment we really can't say exactly when it will be made available. A lot of the update is implemented and looks to be very promising. We want to give you a sneak peak at a few of the things this update brings. We estimate this update will be available by the end of this week.
Tension Relief
After a hard day of jamming in the studio your band will need to find a way to release some of that pent up tension. It's up to you to decide between fast food, strip clubs, bars, or even... drugs! [/img] The system has been designed streamline this process and make it as un-grindy as possible. Time will fast forward briefly while your bandmates tension decreases. [/img]
Polish at every corner
Various parts of the game have an extra layer of polish to ensure the game looks gorgeous long into the future. In this example you'll hopefully notice that the map transition is a lot less robotic. [/img]
Travelling System Improvement
While I (Seabass) was playing the game I noticed that if you travel a short distance, you actually lose tension and travelling long distances with the higher tier vehicles had very little effect on the band. Upon notices these things I decided it was time to rewrite the math behind travelling. I think players should notice a pretty significant difference in consistency of results. Another issue with travelling that this update addresses is its ability to skip gigs with no punishments. Prior to this update you could travel long distances and miss shows without any negative effects. Now you will see the proper outcomes occur even while travelling.
Thanks!
We both want to thank everybody in the community for taking the time to give Rock God Tycoon a chance and by doing so... showing some faith in our team. Hey everyone!
It has been nearly two weeks since our last update which is a long time if you have ever taken notice of our regular update schedule. Panos and I have been working hard on the next update and really wanted it to be special. Quality of life improvements are nice but updates can be so much more. The next update will bring the game to version 1.2!
What will be in version 1.2?
We have overhauled the UI and this time around have included the new calendar system in the process. You can click on the calendar and view your schedule without opening any additional menus. [/img] From within the calendar you can get more information on planned events. [/img] Panos has recreated all of the previous event icons which now look beautiful. [/img]
New events!
Another major change we will be introducing are a series of new events. We've completely redesigned the gameplay loop to get rid of as much of the grind as possible. There is so much to talk about that I don't even have the time to write it all out right now. So here is the new and improved map legend! (No more random question mark on it) [/img]
Performance Improvements
If everything else we did wasn't exciting enough, there are numerous performance improvements as well. A lot of backend cleanup has been done which should help improve the quality of future updates. The few bugs we've ran into we have addressed and solved.
New character actions and so much more!
I seriously wish we had more time to write about all the changes coming in the next update but we are quite busy as it is. The main point we are trying to get across with this post is that we still are here and care about the community! We'll continue improving the game and as we move forward we hope to address any and all concerns the community has shared with us. News regarding Rock God Tycoon

We bring to you another significant update! We haven't had any complaints as of recently and so we figured we should just add more good stuff anyways. This is not to say we aren't still working on user suggestions and taking feedback.
New Game improvements
Panos figured that it would really improve the early game and overall replayability if we gave players the choice of a starting perk. Prior to this update each playthrough started off along the exact same path and didn't see a lot of variety until a few hours into the game. Some of the perks you can now start with will make a very significant difference early on and you can take a less significant perk if you want to try a more challenging run through the game. At long last there is a bit of information on how you actually perform the rhythm gameplay. This has been missing for quite a while and now that Panos is back, he got right on it. Additionally you can now pause during performances which is a pretty helpful feature. [/img] [/img]

Hello everyone Panos here, I have finally settled down and I am able to work on the game again. We have big plans for the next few updates *ahem festivals *ahem, but this is what we got since I got back yesterday.
MAP UI Redesigned
[/img] - The map UI will now also show you the events in whichever city you are hovering your mouse over. - You can now see the name of the city you are viewing on the map. - Updated the graphics on some UI on the map menu.
Gig Analysis effects are back
[/img] Now this isn't something new but we added the effects that were missing, due to the game engine update.
Bookable events time changes
Now the bookable events won't all be at 12:00.
Changelog 1.1.5.0
Major Changes
- Recreated the UI for the city map
- Expanded info option when hovering over cities on the map, shows venue names
- Added option to reject new hires
- All bookable event times have been changed to add more variety. This means gigs aren't always at 12:00 anymore. These changes were made to all the cities
- Improved datebox tooltip
- Polished positioning of random buttons for new game menu
- Updated "Perks & Traits" tutorial page to include "Friend Magnet" perk
- Marshell Speaker Tier 4, price increased to $3000, stage vigor value increased to 12
- New "Ding" sound when analysis stars are finished filling
- Made certain random events less likely to occur
- Achievements reset removed, occured if you pressed CTRL+Right MB

Quality of life
You can now toggle between the normal cursor and the Windows default cursor. F3 to toggle between the two options. [/img] Cancelling events via the dateboxes shown at the top of the main hub has been around for a while but it wasn't really explained anywhere so there is now a tooltip for it. City hype
In an attempt to make the mid to late game more exciting we have added city hype. What this means is that certain cities that you are popular in will reach out to you and offer to pay more to see you perform at one of their local venues. This makes the world feel more active and rewards players for sticking to cities early on. Hopefully this change makes some of the early challenges a little less difficult.
Event redundancy system
Seeing the same random events hundreds of times can get annoying. To fix this we can either add a lot more events (which would involve a lot of writing and programming) or we can extend the life time of the ones we already have. When I wrote the event system originally it did not store any information about the message after it had passed. The new system can track how many times you've seen a message and what choices you have made. I'm slowly working my way through all the previously created events to allow for a more dynamic and less repetitive experience. An example of this is shown when getting the "dropped money" event. Instead of always saying, "You found $100!", it will instead (upon its second occurence) say, "You must be a money magnet because you found another $50!". This way it feels a little different and makes starting a new game all the more refreshing.
Changelog 1.1.4.2
New Stuff
- Message redundancy system implemented
- Added two new message events, (31, 32)
- Added two new character descriptions
- City hype, if you have at least 25% of a city population as fans, there is a chance they'll get hyped to see you perform and pay extra at venues for a limited time
- Cursor can now be toggled between ingame and Windows default with F3
- Event cancellation tooltip now displayed when hovering over dateboxes
- Reduced random event occurrence by about 18%
- Flipping man, fan dream, satanic accusations, and dropped money events have redundancy message modifications
- Fixed bug with "Fan dream" message event that would give player $100 after clicking OK
- Fixed rent displaying as "Rent divided by 12"
