Failure to Launch (v3.1.0.1)

Due to some strange shenanigans in the build process, the Windows 64-bit version of 3.1.0 did not start properly. Personally, I blame my archaic game engine because otherwise it would be my fault.

To rectify this, I have replaced the Win64 build with the perfectly functional Win32 version. In my own (brief) personal tests, this was enough to get the game running properly.

Hope that helps. Sorry to anyone who was impacted by this issue.

Surprise announcement! After years of partnership, the people at Throwback Entertainment have finally release the Xbox port of Carnage in Space: Ignition!

Financial Windfall (v3.1.0)

It's the gift that keeps on giving!

In what I hope is the final update, I've made some changes to make collecting money less painful. Hopefully this should make it easier for everyone to fully enjoy the game without hours of tedious grinding.

NOTE: Unfortunately, I no longer have access to a Mac to test on, so this release does not include a macOS build. I hope to get that rectified before too long.

  • Increased the value of all money drops (again)
  • Enemies in Endless Ground/Space battle will drop money instead of nothing when they would normally drop health
  • Boss Rush now gives a cash bonus at the end
  • Reduced the costs of the most expensive items from $250-$300 down to $150
  • Money and collectibles found will be saved when you die or exit the level
  • The money counter in the HUD shows your total funds, not the amount you've collected this level

  • Fixed the LVL6 outro cutscene not playing the first time through if the "Replay Cutscenes" setting is turned off

Lessons Learned (v3.0.1)

Hello, players! Bet you weren't expecting another update after all this time. But you'd be wrong.

Today, I've backported some more of the things I've learned while developing the sequel, Carnage in Space: Crucible. Additionally, I've tweaked some of the level design in 3 levels that have given people grief in the past.

- [GAMEPLAY] You can now move left and right while performing a jump attack
- [GAMEPLAY]Reduced the sensitivity of the joystick
- [GAMEPLAY] Money drops are worth slightly more
- [LEVEL] Changed some areas in LVL1 to make it clearer where you need to go
- [LEVEL] The submarines in LVL3 behave in a more consistent manner, making it more clear how to progress
- [LEVEL] The bombs in LVL4 may now be defused in any order
- [AUDIO] Replaced the royalty-free music track from Endless Space battle with the OST track from LVL8
- [STORY] Some story text has been rewritten
- [MENU] Replaced button numbers with Xbox button icons in the Settings menu

Fitting In (v2.1.0)

Surprise! It is update time once again. This time, I'm backporting another better design decision from Carnage in Space: Crucible. Thank you, Crucible! The improved feature for today is the screen resolution.

Now, if you go into fullscreen (by pressing F11 or going into the Settings menu), the game should fill up your entire monitor without letterboxing, assuming it's neither an ancient CRT or an ultra-wide display.

I've also included the usual array of small bugfixes and other tweaks.

[SYSTEM] Reduced the screen height from 448 to 432 pixels, making the game run at 16:9 resolution. The game is no longer letterboxed and looks smoother when run fullscreen on a monitor with 16:9 resolution.

[MENU] Pressing up on "Back" in the Extras menu would get the cursor stuck
[ENEMIES] The truck turrets in LVL5 no longer fire at point blank range
[ENEMIES] Slightly reduced the final boss's health, and slightly increased the health of its chaingun

That's right, fans, the wait is finally over (for now at least)! Carnage in Space: Crucible, the sequel to Ignition, finally has a demo!

The demo contains 2 finished levels, and 2 (out of 3) playable characters.

The problems with the Mac and Linux updates have now been resolved, and all three platforms are updated to remove/deprecate the online services. For more information, see the previous update.

Pulling the Plug (v2.0.0)

As mentioned earlier, all of the game's online functionality is now gone or deprecated in favor of using Steam Cloud. But don't worry, your old save data hasn't gone anywhere!

Here's what that means for you:

* When you first load the game, your last-played save file (if any) will automatically be loaded into the first save slot (of 5).
* If you have other online save files, you can press "Import Online Save" to log in to download them to your computer.
* Your save data will be automatically synced via Steam Cloud.
* Your highscores will no longer be uploaded to carnageinspace.com (and the highscores option on the title screen has been removed).

The online service will continue to be available for the forseeable future, so your old online save data will not be lost.

NOTE: Due to technical issues with the build process, this update has only been released for Windows so far. Mac and Linux will be updated soon.

Online functionality going away soon

Hey, players! Big changes to come!

As you may have noticed, Ignition has some online integration that allows you to (optionally) register on the game's website to store your save file online and access it anywhere. You may not have noticed that it also submits your highscores (whether you’re logged in or not) to carnageinspace.com for public viewing too.

Well, that’s going to change soon!

These features were designed way back when Ignition was going to be primarily a browser-based game, so it made sense to add a login so you could access your saves from any computer. But then the browser-based architecture didn’t pan out and the game turned into a desktop app (using the handy NW.js webapp wrapper) on Steam & GameJolt, and that online functionality started making less sense.

Anyway, I have been hard at work redesigning the way save data works so that you won’t need to log in; your progress will be saved on your own computer and synced automatically via Steam cloud (for Steam users) or manually via Dropbox/what-have-you (for GameJolt users).

Don’t worry; long-time users (registered and unregistered) aren’t getting screwed over. You’ll still be able to log into your old account to download your old save files and then keep playing them offline like nothing ever happened.

Until this happens (hopefully this month), feel free to keep playing with or without an online account. I’ll be testing this update thoroughly to ensure nothing is lost in transition.

Still having gamepad issues? Try this.

Hey players, while researching some oddities with gamepads, I stumbled upon this forum post: https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/1/1354868867713562293/

In short, if your gamepad is mapping certain buttons to certain actions regardless of your in-game controller configuration (example: A = enter, right stick = mouse, etc), you can disable Steam's default controller mapping.

To quote the thread linked above: "Steam>Settings>Controller>General Controller Settings. Uncheck all the boxes."

I hope this helps! If it doesn't, let me know and I will keep digging.

Introducing Carnage in Space: Crucible

Hey there, players! Today, I’d like to share some exciting news: Crucible, the sequel to Ignition, is now in development!



Crucible will offer more of the merciless, violent platforming gameplay you’ve come to expect from Carnage in Space, but that’s not all! In addition, it will feature multiple playable heroes, more customization, a deeper story with more side-content, and a whole lot more.

I intend to release the first demo sometime in late 2018. Until then, I’ll be sure to keep you all posted on the devlog, so don’t forget to follow for updates!

Mac version restored

Well, that was an adventure. Something must have changed with Steam's HTTP upload, because the Mac version had some aliases get broken during the upload. With some help, I managed to upload the Mac version the *right* way, so the game made it up in one piece.

Long story short, the Mac is Bac! Again.

First off, the bad news. Although if you're not a Mac user, you can just skip this paragraph. In the middle of this update, the Mac build somehow got broken and the game won't start anymore. ... Okay, now time for the GOOD news. In response to a recent piece of feedback, I tested the drop rates for money and decided that could stand to be buffed a bit. What's that? You say the average player doesn't want to play this game for as long as I playested it? Fancy that.

Anyway! You will now get:
* More frequent cash drops in all difficulties
* WAY more frequent cash drops in INSANE mode
* Slightly higher level bonuses for perfect scores
* Considerably higher level bonuses for imperfect scores

That's right - Ignition has always had achievements, but now you can show those off in your Steam profile! The game also properly supports the Steam overlay, too.

Besides that, there's not all that much to update 1.2.0 - just a couple of minor fixes, plus removing some dummied-out social integrations.
