Apologies for our mistake yesterday

Hello everyone, On 30th September we revealed a character intended for Nippon Marathon 2, a Canadian Mountie. What we didn't know was that the 30th September was Truth and Reconciliation Day - A Day that honours victims and survivors of Canada's residential schools, which sought to forcefully assimilate indigenous children in which the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) were involved. Here is some more information on Truth and Reconciliation Day: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/first-national-truth-reconciliation-day-1.6188540 A member of our Discord channel brought this to our attention and we wish to make sure that Nippon Marathon remains a fun experience for everyone. We're sorry, we were unaware of something that is very important to many families. Our ignorance is not an excuse and we have taken time to reflect upon this. We want to ensure that Nippon Marathon and future games are fun for everyone and is never meant to be offensive. This has caused us to take a step back and evaluate all of our NM2 characters, as the last thing we want to do is cause offence. In the original Nippon Marathon, we never assigned nationalities and we made sure that all the characters were voiced by individuals of different races and gender. We take this all very seriously. In regards to Benton and Tony, we will be withdrawing them from the NM roster. If you or anyone you know are experiencing pain or distress as a result of their (or someone they knows) Residential school experience, then please get in touch with the Indian Residential School Survivors Society (https://www.irsss.ca/) We made a donation to the IRSSS this afternoon, consider making a donation to the IRSSS too. Everyone reading this should feel free to talk to me or Amy about this or anything else. We are a safe space and our door is always open. You can DM us on our company Twitter (https://www.twitter.com/OnionSoupLtd), my personal Twitter (https://www.twitter.com/MonAmieMadin), our discord (https://discordapp.com/invite/SpsyEHs), or even via email (amymadin@onionsoupinteractive.com) Thank you

All hail a Nippon Marathon 2 update (and much more)

Hello everyone, Firstly we would like to apologise for the radio silence from us. We thought we would provide you all with an update regarding all things Onion Soup Interactive, including Nippon Marathon 2.

BOSS BATTLE - FIBROMYALGIA

In October 2020 I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, Id been suffering with the illness for quite a long time prior to this under the impression it was an old neck injury from 2008, but after the symptoms worsened and the illness characteristic chronic pain and fatigue became unbearable the doctors finally gave me a label that I could work with. By this point it had become almost impossible to work on UEDI: Shadow of the Citadel, each day I was able to do less and less until I couldn't work on the game at all, heck I couldnt even finish a meal at the dining table without going for a lie down, taking a ton of painkillers and sleeping for as long as my body demanded (or, ironically, laid awake, super tired and totally incapable of sleep). At its worst, the illness put me in constant physical pain, reduced my brain to mush and deprived me of sleep, sometimes for weeks at a time without any kind of reprieve. I have a pretty strong work ethic, but since creating Onion Soup Interactive with Amy my desire to work on games is so strong that its been really tough to sit on the sidelines and try to focus on getting better. Fibromyalgia sufferers have a lot of trouble focussing on complex tasks and game design is really, really complex. For a while I tried really hard to fight through it, but it really isnt possible to do that. I had to take a time-out, even if it lasted for a whole year or longer. Our wonderful friends in the Onion Soup Discord Server have been very supportive of us, theyve insisted that health comes before work, no matter what and Im really happy and proud of our community. If you don't know already, Fibromyalgia makes the body produce excess cortisol (the stress hormone) and prevents the body from creating serotonin (the happiness hormone). You can imagine how taxing this is on mental health, Amy continues to do an amazing job of helping me through it. I know it isnt easy for her. Amy, my parents, and our dog help keep my mental health in check. If youre suffering with any form of mental health issue I absolutely insist that you must find some kind of help and support. You might spend a lot of time thinking the loneliest and darkest thoughts but making a genuine human connection with someone who really cares can help you drag yourself out the deepest of holes, I promise! Since then Ive tried so many things to help ease the symptoms of the illness, I cut gluten, caffeine, sugar and alcohol from my diet (my favourite things used to be coffee, pizza, whiskey and salted caramel brownies . I had one year of weekly physiotherapy, 6 months of acupuncture, opioids, anti-inflammatories, supplements, exercise routines, meditation, and osteopathy. You name it, ive probably done it! Im writing a detailed guide for other sufferers which may be of some help and itll be posted soon. Finally, after a really long time Im starting to feel slightly better. For a few weeks now Ive been able to do a bit of work again, mostly art but also some work in Unity work too.

Getting Back on the Horse! - A New Game Thats Even More Stupid?

Amy and I agreed that jumping back into UEDI or Nippon 2 development would probably be too difficult for me right now and there would be a risk of triggering a flare up of symptoms and taking 10 steps back. So instead weve been putting together a new micro game collection. This allows Amy to learn more Unity skills and is also a much more low-pressure project. Were almost ready to share it with you, maybe in a couple of months. Before then though well be running a closed beta, so if youre interested just mention it to us in our Discord. Join the Discord here: https://discordapp.com/invite/SpsyEHs Oh, what the heck, here are a few GIFs just for fun.

We will be keeping the name a surprise until it's official announcement, but we are VERY excited to share it with you all. Believe me, keeping this project under wraps has been very difficult.

Whats next for UEDI: Shadow of the Citadel

Well be working on our new project for a little while longer, once we have that wrapped up and assuming Im able to maintain my health, well be getting back to the game. Well be making a conscious effort to keep it a tighter and more focussed action game than originally planned. We want to get the coolest and most fun gameplay aspects ready for you to enjoy so as not to risk the game getting stuck in development hell again.

You Want Nippon Marathon 2?

I made Nippon Marathon mostly by myself with a little help from Amy, as she was first picking up the fundamentals of art and game design. It was very difficult and stressful, so when the time comes for us to begin working on Nippon Marathon 2 as a full-time project, well be hiring some help. Were not a big studio and we dont have a lot of resources but thankfully theres enough love for Nippon Marathon that we believe a publisher is willing to cover the expenses. This means I can focus of work thats less mentally taxing, Ive really enjoyed brushing up on my Maya 3D modelling and ZBrush 3D Sculpting skills recently and I think this is now a real strength of mine. I wish we could start NM2 tomorrow, so much that I made a new character. Shes a Canadian Mountie called Benton who rides her trusty horse Toby. Heres a render of them, please let us know what you think!

Nippon Marathon CD OST now available

Weve had requests for a physical Nippon Marathon OST for aaaaages, and along with many things in the world it was horribly delayed by the Coronavirus pandemic. Anyway, its just been released by City Connection and is available to order from Clarice Shop. The CD features the music from the original game as well as tracks exclusive to the Arcade Edition. It also features a written note from us (in Japanese). Although the site is in Japanese and primarily for the Japanese market, Buyee supports international shipping from this store. Buy Now: https://bit.ly/NipponMarathonCD

Nippon Marathon Turbo Hyper = Running

It has finally been released! Yay! The pandemic literally sucked the life out of the arcade industry but were seeing signs of life creeping back in now and you might start to see some of them in the wild soon. Theres a huge Japanese and US chain called 1UP where the games been on test. Then theres a bunch of them in Japan and Hawaii too. Cant we go and live there? If you fancy a copy of Nippon Marathon Turbo for yourself, then they'e available to purchase from our arcade publisher, exA-Arcadia. Check it out here: https://bit.ly/nmturbo If you are attending the "Made in Asia" Convention in Brussels this October, then you can actually play the game yourself during the convention. Arcade Belgium are hosting a NM Turbo tournament at the convention. Be one of the first people in Europe to play Nippon Marathon Turbo. How exciting.

Support a Local Artist

During the pandemic, we commissioned a piece of art for our website from our community member, KYLEZOOKI. We are super pleased with the results and recommend that you all go and support this amazing artist. Not only does it include myself and Amy, our Master of Ceremonies, Buster, and Company Flower, Mocha, were also included in the piece. Go and follow him immediately on Twitter: https://twitter.com/KYLEZOOKI091 Phew that was a long one... Again thank you all for your continued support, and thanks to everyone who continues to buy us a coffee. It's very much appreciated, and if you want to buy us one today, mine's a decaf oat latte; https://www.buymeacoffee.com/nipponmarathon2 Remember to drop by our Discord and say hello, everyone loves chatting about games, anime and other fun stuff and everyones welcome. So that's everything for now, Stay safe! Andy, Amy, Buster & Mocha

First Celebrity Announcement, Campaign Update, and our very first Competition

Nippon Marathon Celebrity Announcement As you might have seen in our campaign, we are introducing a new feature; "Celebrity Special Progress Report". In this feature our very own Abe Watanabe is hosting a chat show with some famous faces. These celebrities will give out challenges before the race and can award bonuses or penalties to players. So with that being said, we are incredibly excited to announce our first celebrity, Hideaki Kobayashi, or Uncle Sailor, is joining the Nippon Marathon family. [previewyoutube=kMslns0NdeQ;full][/previewyoutube] To learn more, and learn how YOU can join the team of celebrity guests, then read the full update on our Kickstarter Campaign Page . A Thank You From The Devs As always we'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has pledged so far. We are already at 45% and hope you help us reach 50% in the next couple of days. We have recorded a video to say thank you as well as introduce you to our competition. [previewyoutube=htu2ka0dC7Q;full][/previewyoutube] Remember you must be a backer to be entered automatically into this competition. So back the campaign now and grab a real collectors item: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/onionsoupinteractive/nippon-marathon-2?ref=1wzjsn Gain Exclusive Rewards with Backer Club
We have partnered with BlackerClub, a Kickstarter Partner where you receive an exclusive bonus if you pledge through their website. Through BackerClub, receive a free signed copy of Nippon Marathon 1 when you spend more than $ 99 (free worldwide shipping). Although we have the signed NM1 game as a competition, if you want to guarantee your copy, then make a pledge through BackerClub Add-ons Update As some of you have noticed, we've had a few issues with add-ons, where physical add-ons were not being displayed when a digital only reward was chosen. We have now fixed this, so you should see the add-ons for the posters, OST & T-shirt when you chose a digital only reward. You may notice that the price has changed, due to how Kickstarter processes physical and digital rewards, we have had to merge the postage costs into the add-on price If you were able to chose a physical add-on before today, then the price has not been changed. There has been no change to the digital add-ons. There has also been some issues with early bird backers who wanted to purchase the "Design a Placard" add-on. Some of you have been unable to amend your original pledge, as the early bird is no longer available. So if you want the placard add-on and you chose early-bird, then we are working on a work-around so that you can still purchase the add-on once the campaign ends. Again we may sound like a broken record but we really do appreciate everything you have done for us! If your haven't pledged already, then please back our campaign: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/onionsoupinteractive/nippon-marathon-2?ref=9gn77n Stay tuned for more updates, including the opportunity for you to choose the next course, where will it be??? Play Nippon Marathon Online Win Free Steam Keys!

Wedy here, Have you heard about the new feature Steam published on their Beta Software last week? I'm sure you have, but for the individuals who haven't, It's called Steam "Remote Play Together", which converts local multiplayer to online multiplayer. As you probably can imagine, playing Nippon Marathon online has been the developers most asked question. Theyd love to give you a full online mode, but unfortunately its unlikely that this version of Nippon Marathon will be made online. Unless, you know, the developers get struck by lighting and win the lottery (it could happen), which would pay for the dev costs associated with online play. But in the meantime, whilst the developers are walking around with umbrellas in heavy lighting storms, Remote Play Together offered by Steam maybe the next best thing. Plus using Steams new feature, you can be-friend and play against the developers themselves. Theyre eager to start challenging you to races.

Nippon Marathon is out now and ready to party!

Developer Onion Soup Interactive and PQube are excited to announce that Nippon Marathon is now available on Steam and out of Early Access!
The physics-heavy racer is the ultimate tribute to Japanese game shows, including everything from crazy competitors to collapsing courses, mad minigames, and the perfect J-pop soundtrack. Nippon Marathon - billed as Micro Machines meets Takeshis Castle - is a hell for leather race across Japan and finally out! Slip into your Narwhal Onesie, Lobster Suit, School Uniform or er dog body and charge through locations across Japan! The local multiplayer mode is the best way to embrace the madness that is Nippon Marathon! Gather your friends on the couch (or Tatami) and watch them fly head-first into stacks of boxes, ride uncontrollable shopping carts down a giant bowling alley and finally find out what it feels like to run full speed into a wooden wall that you thought was made of paper! However, if you want to train for your next race, the AI will make for great sparring partners in both Story Mode and Versus Mode. Stay at the front of the pack to make your competitors disappear at the end of the screen and gain stars - then the race resets to the last checkpoint until the finish line where the racer with the most stars wins! Easy, right? Absolutely, if it weren't for throwable fruits, shopping carts, inflatable pineapples, collapsing tracks, clingy Shiba Inus, watermelon rains, and many more hilarious hazards!

LEVEL 7 STORY MODE DEMO NOW AVAILABLE!

Wedy here and have I got news for you. ..The long awaited level 7 and story mode demo are here! So lets not waste any time and crack on with the juicy scoop.

    LEVEL 7: JINKO EKI STATION

So far the Nippon Marathon has taken you through quite the sightseeing tour of PLANET NIPPON; weve travelled from the banks of KAWA RIVER to the steamy Mountains of YAMA-DORI. With the marathon reaching the final stages, grab your giant foam finger and your briefcase as were heading straight into the heart of NEO-JINKO.

    EXPECT NEW SURPRISES

As the trains in PLANET NIPPON run on time its often the case that the Bullet Train will leave early forcing you to drop all of your luggage and leap onto the roof of the train (it happens, we swear). This is where level 7 begins.
Expect the usual Nippon Marathon madness plus a few extra surprises, such as the soundtrack to the level being called Kobe Beefed Up and the term Bull-Train. Are you confused? Me too!
The madness doesnt stop there. When you arrive at the station be prepared to be scared and confused from the bright lights and hundreds of salarymen. Theyre everywhere.
With JINKO EKI STATION being one of the largest stations in PLANET NIPPON expect to knock over and bump into Salarymen on their way to and from work, but dont worry. Theyre used to it, and its actually encouraged! Outside JINKO EKI STATION you may recognise the statue of TEISHU, a Shiba Inu with great business sense and a huge following of his own. Unfortunately you wont have time to show your respect for him as you have the busiest intersection in the world to cross so grab a pineapple for that second wind to the finish line.
Level 7 gives you a taste of the final race NEO JINKO, but we cant release that without giving away a HUGE STORY SPOILER, so I can say no more.

    STORY MODE:

I know what youre all thinking, what exactly is story mode? PLANET NIPPON loves visual novels and manga, so thats exactly what Story Mode is. A visual novel, but with a difference. Story Mode allows you to choose and follow the journey of the four main characters from pre-Nippon Marathon to post-Nippon Marathon.
Each story lasts around two hours to complete and dont think youre just reading a visual novel for two hours, you have to race too! Remember to read my Wedy Guides to learn more about popularity as its even more important to be popular in Story - it can move you from 3rd place to 1st.
The story follows a general theme but is personalised for each character; so expect to learn why Zenbei XEN BAE has two names, who exactly is Nishibori, why J DARWIN wears a lobster suit and why Snuguru Maestro has a love of watermelons.
Youll also be introduced to the boss characters as well as a few new faces, like my colleague NNBC Anchorman Abe Watanabe. As the story develops youll see the truth behind the Nippon Marathon and just why Handsome Hazuki is the contestant to beat. Youll also see more of me, Wedy! I play a part too, and quite a big one!
In early access you can play the first 13 chapters of Snuguru Maestros story to give you a taste of whats to come when the full story mode is unlocked on full release.

    IN OTHER NEWS

There have also been some changes to the general gameplay:
    • Achievements have been reenabled
    • Me (Wedy) now appearing in the character selection screen - but how do you unlock me (Wedy)?
    • Fixed spawning issue where characters would spawn after finish line.
    • No longer eliminated if 1st player gets too far ahead in the levels.
    • General optimisation increased for smoother gameplay.
So for now I hope you enjoy playing EKI JINKO STATION & Snuguru Maestros story. You wont be disappointed. So thats all for now folks. Ive been Wedy Jones. Keep it real. Keep it Nippon.

Story Mode Preview: Pass Me My Reading Glasses

Wedy here but you knew that already.

    DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

The developers would firstly like to apologise for the lack of communication over the past couple of months; development of the game has completely taken over. I managed to grab an exclusive interview with one of the developers Buster regarding how development is going.
Oh dear, oh dear. After the interview, Buster sitting in an averagely sized lower visual quality puddle of tears did inform me that it will all be worth it when the game is released. HANG IN THERE DEVELOPERS! You can do it!

    STORY MODE

So with that covered let me bring you another exclusive… Story Mode. Story Mode has been covered in mystery until now. I was able to steal, erm I mean borrow a copy of Story Mode when Buster was wiping away the tears and now can show it to you guys! Exciting! So lets start with the basics.

    STORY BASICS

There are four stories, one for each character, allowing you to follow their journey from pre-Nippon Marathon to post-Nippon Marathon Champion. Don’t forget to bring your running shoes as you’ll have to run each race from the Nippon Marathon that you’re all familiar with. Each story lasts approx two hours and if you play all four stories that’s a whole EIGHT hours of story action alone! Don’t think you have to complete the story in one marathon sitting either (we won’t judge if you do), the game will save progress automatically so you can quit and continue story at your own leisure. I know what you’re thinking, so I’ve completed Darwin’s story so I don’t need to complete the others right? Well think again. Each character perspective will merge together to bring you the ULTIMATE NIPPON MARATHON experience. I remember seeing something similar on The Simpsons, the “Trilogy of Error” episode I think it was? So Wedy fans, erm I mean Nippon Marathon fans let me show you what story is all about.

Unfortunately story will not be playable on early access until closer to the full release date (Winter 2018).

    OTHER NEWS

Whilst stealing, erm I mean borrowing Story Mode I overheard a phone conversation between developers how JINKO EKI STATION (level 7) is due to be released on Steam Early access by the end of next week. Oh before I go remember that Nippon Marathon is at EGX in Birmingham this weekend so if you’re going make sure to check out the game on PQube’s stand. I’ve been Wedy Jones, Keep it Real, Keep it Nippon

Level 7 Preview: Trains, Trains, Trains, Bulls?

Wedy here and we have some EXCITING information to share with you on our next Versus Mode course… JINKO EKI STATION. Why don't we see what ABE WATANABE from Nippon News Broadcasting Concern has to say about this brand new course?
Great! So back to the course.

    JINKO EKI STATION

So, in this course the contestants will start off on top of a speeding Bullet Train heading from YAMA DORI (where the Steamy Monkeys live) all the way to the busiest train station - JINKO EKI STATION. Expect there to be daring jumps, insta-kill falls and even.... a herd of bulls?

Don't expect the madness to calm down when you reach the station, those salarymen are everywhere... and where did I put my train pass? I can't get through the ticket gates without my Railway Jasmine (RJ) Pass!!!

I asked the developers for their thoughts on the course:
Unfortunately JINKO EKI STATION won't be available to play until closer to release so stay tuned fore more updates.

    UPCOMING UPDATES

Rumour has it that a preview of Story Mode and the elusive Level 8 (NEO JINKO) will be available soon. My sources reveal that something FISHY is happening... Maybe they're preparing some exquisite salmon persimmon leaf sushi for me and the contestants... Hold on... But I'm allergic to Salmon... Well, that sure was interesting, wasn't it viewers?! I've been Wedy Jones. Keep it Real. Keep it Nippon.

Update - Version 0751: Fruit, Mazes a Speed Increase of 25?

Wedy here with an update for all you Nippon fans! With game development rapidly approaching the finishing line, the developers have released what can only be described as "The Update To Beat All Updates!" So what does this update include I hear you cry? Well let me tell you...

    GAME MODIFIERS:

Game Modifiers are now in stock! Purchase them from the In-Game Store and enable them from the Options Menu.
Turbo Mode On! Not for the faint of heart, this mode is fast, furious and down right frantic. Turn this bad boy on and Versus Modes will increase in speed by 25%. Minigames Off! What, you want to turn me off? How dare you! You... you... MONSTER! Seriously though, I could do with a lie down in a dark room so don't mind me. Item Config! Wanna play bananas only? Well you can, you can also play melons only, pineapples only, mushrooms only or even choose no items at all. Here's a tip: Turbo Mode + Minigames Off + No Items is a real test of skill for you and your virulent compadres.

    DROP OUT:

There used to be a nightclub called Dropout near where I grew up, it attracted the very people you would expect - QUITTERS! So, we've added a drop-out feature - players 2, 3 and 4 can now pause the menu and give up on life should they wish. Typical!

    ENHANCED PHYSICS:

There's been some improvements to the player reactions to the environment. Tumbles, crashes and falls are now more realistic and glitches should be less frequent however mistakes will now lead to more amusing ragdoll moments.

    DR. DE JONG'S PURPLE MAZE:

I'm not going to say much about this, instead I shall leave you with this screenshot which won't clarify anything at all.

CONTROLLER CONFIG CHANGES NOW BEING SAVED:

The title says it all, your custom control scheme will now be saved, including assignments for players, buttons... everything! Yay!

    CPU CHARACTERS:

Versus Modes against CPU opponents now include the four boss characters. What happens when Hazuki and Hideko face off? Will they have a tiff? Juicy!

    NEW SUDDEN DEATH:

Elimination by shiba inu. That is all. Actually it isn't, there's also been improvements to the melon based sudden death too, my oh my you're so spoiled!

    BETTER MELON BEHAVIOUR:

Nippon melons are the best melons, you know why? Because they explode! However we've made them a little less accurate so that the leader doesn't get 'blue shell syndrome' and need hospitalising.

    YEN FROM PARTY GAMES:

You can now earn Yen from playing GO-GO-TROLLEY BOWLING and LOBSTER MODE, hurrah! So that's all for now folks, Keep your eyes, ears and noses peeled for more updates regarding all things Nippon on my Twitter Page, and who knows I may even get to release EXCLUSIVE sneak peeks at the upcoming NEO JINKO prefecture and on the somewhat elusive STORY MODE! I've been Wedy Jones, Keep it Real, Keep it Nippon!

    Controller Assignment Fixed!

    Hot News! Controller Assignment Fixed!

Wedy Jones here with a morsel of juicy info for you. If you've been struggling to get controllers and keyboards assigned properly then you definitely wanna check this out! The developers of Nippon Marathon just sent me these patch notes: V0.662 Notes - When using the controller mapping feature in the options menu you are now able to assign controllers to players properly. The keyboard will always remain as P1, so if you want to play multiplayer with one person on keyboard just ensure that controllers are assigned to P2, P3 and P4 and the controller mapping menu can now be navigated using keyboard, gamepad and mouse. The developers then went on to say: "We'll continue to improve this area of the game so please leave feedback." I've been Wedy Jones. Keep it real, keep it Nippon!

    [ 2018-07-07 10:55:57 CET ] [ Original post ]

An update that's, wait for it... WHEELY GOOD FUN!

Wedy here! Some people like bird watching. Some people like a lazy Sunday afternoon drive. Some people like to throw themselves into a trolley, and smash head-first into man-sized bowling pins!
Me? I'm a strictly 'face off' kinda girl when it comes to neck-breaking hilarity. You? You're going to LOVE IT! That's right viewers, Go-Go Trolley Bowling is here! Say 'no' to flat cola and soggy nachos, and say 'hello' to yet another session of multiplayer hilarity!

    THE RULES!

1/ Phone your friends for some 2-8 player action (snacks optional). 2/ Choose from 5 to 10 frames depending on your preferred game-time!
3/ Turn based action ahoy! Stand back and watch your friends humiliate themselves, one after the other!

    THE AGONY!

    1/ Set your trolley/shopping cart's position - aim for a strike!
2/ Take a running jump into the trolley - graceful this is not, folks! 3/ Wince as you career towards random hazards appearing between frames - from ramps, paper doors, disco balls, carp and (of course!) shiba inu!
4/ Hope for some high-scoring points potential. 5/ Pray you don't end up in Accident and Emergency.
As they say, it's not the winning that counts, but the bone-shattering idiocy of how you lost, that's important! So that's all for now folks! I've been Wedy Jones. Keep it real, Keep it Nippon!

    [ 2018-07-02 14:19:52 CET ] [ Original post ]

The update you’ve all been waiting for IS FINALLY HERE!

Wedy here, while you’ve been bracing yourselves for the buffeting winds of the Steam Summer Sale, we’ve been hard at work to bring you an update like no other! Bosses? Check! New stages? Check! Monkeys...? You’d better believe it! Want the details? IKIMASHOU!

    In Store Game

The in-game store is now open! Unlock new characters and bonuses - like new race-affecting extras. Want a fair (but surely NO FUN!) ‘No Items Mode’? How about a Turbo mode? These unlocks will make the race more personal to your taste! The points you earn at the end of a race can now be converted into sweet, sweet Yen which you can spend in the in-game store! ‘Capitalism, ho!’ as, er… I believe someone once said.

    Unlockable Boss Character

Unlockable Boss Characters are here! Handsome Hazuki, Shiro Hideko, KG Park, Felix Arizona join the party! If you’d like to know more about these not-so shadowy figures, then stop by our website for their full character bios! Or if you prefer your Boss characters spoiler free, you’ll find their individual stories in the upcoming Story Mode. Nothing comes for free though! The bosses will vary in cost in the store. KG Park at a cheerful ¥107,987, Handsome Hazuki proves good looks come with a price with the most expensive unlock of ¥902,714. Moustache grooming doesn’t come cheap. And wait… wait… this just in! Onion Soup Interactive will give you, for this update only, enough in-game currency to buy at least one boss from the store!

    New Prefecture YAMA-DORI

As previously reported there’s now a new area, YAMA-DORI, featuring two new attractions - Unsafe Sake Facility & Steamy Steamy Monkeys UNSAFE SAKE FACILITY From the rice paddies to the facility itself, the making of Sake is a fine art – though we wouldn’t recommend a tasting session right now. Weave your way thought the backpackers to find a distilliary on the brink of collapse. Falling bridges and exploding barrels? Someone call Health and Safety!

STEAMY STEAMY MONKEYS You can’t come to Japan without experiencing a traditional Onsen in the mountains! But this is no time for a bath, not if the Snow Monkeys have any say in the matter. The Snow Monkeys love using their smart phone to livestream the marathon. So don' be surprised if a Snow Monkey starts livestreaming mid-slide! The Snow Monkeys also love to throw bananas and jump on your back (or straddling your face!) Remember folks - mischief maketh the marathon!

    ...AND SOME FINAL FIXES!

Tweaks to the fruit machine minigame We’ve update the UI and fixed a bug that sometimes resulted in the minigame not showing. Items are now dispensed once the minigame is complete. Carp and Shiba now appear in place of the fruit machine objects.
Resolution and Options The bug where the screen resolution was interpreted the wrong way around has now been fixed. Hurrah! The options menu and saving system has also been updated, though this still requires further improvements.

    What’s Coming Next?

The much hyped Trolley Minigame is still currently in development. All I can say is that you won't want to be doing this in your local Super Ichiba, the staff would not be pleased. Remember to follow me on Twitter & on my website for the latest scoop for all things Nippon Marathon! So that's all for now folks! I've been Wedy Jones. Keep it real, Keep it Nippon!

    Huge Update Imminent

Wedy here, it might seem like we’ve been quiet, we have! We’re working through some issues with localisation at the moment, these have prevented us from updating the game as per our schedule, so instead of remaining silent and trying to figure it out we thought we’d let you in on the upcoming content that was due to be released in parts. This is now coming to you in one big update shortly!

    In-Game Store

Every time you play any game mode your points will be converted into Yen which can be spent on new items, check it out below:

    Boss Characters

As you’ve guessed from the screenshot, we’re including the boss characters in the next update but you’ll need to buy them from the In-Game Store!

    Free Money?!

Yes! Coming with this update will be enough In-Game Currency to buy at least one boss character from the store. How exciting!

    Unsafe Sake Facility

We have a brand new course for you to play in Versus Mode, here’s some screenshots to whet your appetite. We are now in the mountains of the YAMA-DORI prefecture, the fresh mountain air and manure smell fills my nostrils, it is terrible.

    Steamy Steamy Monkeys

What’s this? Another new course for Versus Mode? Absolutely! This course is called Steamy Steamy Monkeys, the monkeys are hot, they are steamy and they like to throw bananas.

    Fruit Machine Improvements

We've improved the fruit machine minigame, including the UI and we've fixed a bug that sometimes resulted in the minigame not showing. Items are now dispensed once the minigame is complete. Carp and Shiba now appear in place of the fruit machine objects.

    Resolution and Options Fixes

There was a pretty silly bug in which the screen resolution was sometimes interpreted the wrong way around. Thanks go out to the Steam Reviewer who pointed this out whilst claiming "this is by far and the worst coded, even for early access, game I have ever seen!". We’ve improved the options menu and saving system though this still requires further improvement. This is all great news but WHEN CAN WE PLAY? “Soon” is the best answer we can give you, we’re just working on some details regarding our translation services, as soon as this is done we’ll publish the update and all of this goodness will become playable!

    What’s Coming Next?

We’re continuing development of Story Mode, I can now reveal that each of the four main characters will have their own story arc and unique perspectives of the main story timeline. These will be significantly different in tone and content so you’ll really want to play through all four. At the same time, we’ll be putting together our next Party Game which involves shopping trolleys and bowling pins! Then we’ll be on to the final two stages and the rest of the outstanding content and polish. Remember to follow me on Twitter & on [strike]my[/strike] website for the latest scoop for all things Nippon Marathon! So that's all for now folks! I've been Wedy Jones, Keep it real, Keep it Nippon!

Update - News on Unsafe Sake

    Previous Update Patch Notes

We were in such a hurry to release the previous update that we didn't get chance to publish the patch notes so please find them here... Patch Notes - 0.478 Then we rushed around getting ready to see my grandfather's wedding, seriously, he's 92!

So where are we now with development?

Well, between completing the first iteration of LOBSTER mode and the fixes detailed above we've been running around from Expo to Expo and gathering vital feedback. Watching people play for the first time over and over again is an invaluable resource and it really helps me to take a step back and view the game afresh. We're in Osaka right now, we'll be moving on to Tokyo soon with some stops along the way. I want to experience the capital firsthand before work begins on the final two courses. Speaking of courses I'm aiming to have Unsafe Sake Brewery playable at the end of May. There's some fun surprises in this course which I think you'll really enjoy. At the same time, our newly appointed writer will begin work on the much anticipated story and my final job while we're in Japan is to put together the mechanics that will facilitate the delivery of that story. There will be an update soon and I'm hoping to be able to release chapter one of Story Mode during the early access period as an appetiser for the main course! Just a quick note on bugs and issues. We're a small team, actually we only have one developer! I'm sure you can imagine that developing such a game by oneself isn't a walk in the park, however that's the same for all developers, we do it because it's tough and rewarding. But we do need help sometimes! I'd like to ask that you please post any bug reports in the discussion forums. Bug reports are super super useful to us :) If you want to see what Hazuki is up to you can follow him on Instagram here. Don't forget to follow Wedy here andhere too!

    Patch Notes - 0.478

Hello! Apologies for these patch notes being a little late, they apply to the update released on 23 April 2018.

    • New Contestant Spectator - Players can now select the Spectator character and play both Versus and LOBSTER as them, they're so adorable!
    • Framerate optimisation - Framerates should be improved slightly in all areas and drastically in some, especially during Wedy sequences
    • New Options - Full-Screen/Windowed options have arrived as have custom controller settings (beta)
    • Level tweaks - Based on feedback we've made some signposting and some other tweaks to the levels, such as the elevator in level 3 which could sometimes go all whacky and mess you up for good and the ending to level 2 which could result in players running off into the infinite void! Also the Zen Garden and Temple ares of Level 2 have been signposted and decorated with this in mind.
    • Scoring - We've changed the value of the STARS, this means a player wanting to play tactically using popularity or the Stickers scoring mechanisms has a better chance of making an impact on the final scoreboard. STARS used to be worth 100 points, now they're worth 50 each.
    • Player Select - Improvements have been made here meaning that all players must be ready before P1 can advance to the next screen
    • Improved Performance - Upwards of 20fps increases in some areas of the game.
    • Linux Support - We now have a working version of Linux that's only currently available to beta testers, if you're interested in helping test then please get in touch!
    • Improved signposting at bottom of waterfall in Kawa River Run
    • Falling into the water in Kawa River Run is now more perilous
    • Fixed LOBSTER Mode controller assign, now any controller can be used by any player to initiate a turn
    • Fixed some geometry where colliders were missing in all courses
    • Improved performance (in some areas you should see a 20+fps increase!)
    • Turned sunlight back on immediately after wedy arrives to make for a more pleasant visual
    • Configured Wedy's camera upward so we can see her better during interview answers
    • Moved wedy's spawn so she's much less likely to appear inside level geometry
    • Nishiboris P2 (pink) texture somehow reverted back to old one, now fixed
    • Fixed unfair scoring on elevator in Super Ichiba Sweep
    • Added more detail and hazards to Super Ichiba Sweep
    • Adjust camera at FireJuggler Bridge in Kawasemi City Sights
    • Adjusted camera when going down road near nightclub in Kawasemi City Sights
    • Added many new commentary lines - "Nishbori just ate a poisonous mushroom, that is not advisable!" and many more
    • Warning Images (such as the shiba inu photograph) present throughout all 4 courses
    • Fixed popularity floating indicators on many objects

Sink into the Party Game where all shell breaks loose: L.O.B.S.T.E.R Mode out NOW!

Roll up! Roll up! L.O.B.S.T.E.R Mode has arrived in Early Access! The first of three planned Party Games for Nippon Marathon, L.O.B.S.T.E.R Mode is a pass-the-pad test of skill and endurance for 2-8 players.
After every player picks and names their own contestant, they must run Surfin’ Jack Cactus’ gauntlet: a precariously narrow, randomly generated assault course filled with swinging hammers, pneumatic boxing gloves, basketball cannons and irate American footballers, as well as paper targets that grant bonus time when hit. There may be some beached fish flopping around, too… The player who records the longest distance before the timer expires wins the round, while all others shellfishly grab a letter. Between each round Surfin’ Jack Cactus spins his bonus wheel to see whether more time’s added to the clock or the course is re-rolled, and the sole winner is the player who manages to avoid being dubbed the LOBSTER, PRAWN or EBI (depending on the chosen length of the game).
In addition to the four key Nippon Marathon contestants, LOBSTER Mode also introduces a selection of playable spectators to ensure everybody has a unique avatar during eight-player parties. Like the full Nippon Marathon itself, L.O.B.S.T.E.R Mode will evolve during the game's Early Access period, with additional course elements and contestants planned for future updates. We'll be listening to suggestions in the comments below and on the Community boards during the creation of these new course features (check out the pinned thread). So be sure to let us know what you think of L.O.B.S.T.E.R Mode - your suggestions could be implemented in the future!
And for our huge Asian fanbase, today's update brings an extra-special addition to Nippon Marathon. Japanese, Chinese and Korean localization is now available, plus our talented commentator Sora has recorded all the announcer dialogue in Japanese as well, for added authenticity. We want to thank you all for the immense support so far, and we hope you love today's new features. This first big content update is just one of many we have planned for 2018, and we can't wait to expand the wacky world of Nippon Marathon even more in the coming months.

    L.O.B.S.T.E.R mode is coming 04/04/18!

Greetings contestants! Wedy here with a very special announcement: Nippon Marathon is expanding this week! Look how happy that news has made Surfin' Jack Cactus below!
On Wednesday, every Early Access player will gain access to the very first Nippon Marathon Party Game: L.O.B.S.T.E.R mode, which supports 2-8 players in a pass-the-pad jamboree of epic proportions!
And that's not all: Nippon Marathon's upcoming update will also add localization support for Japanese, Korean and Chinese, and will ALSO be unleashing an authentic Japanese commentary track into the Nippon News Broadcasting airwaves!
We'll bring you much more info on Wednesday when the update goes live. Until then, I've been Wedy!

Developer update #1 - Fixes, localization + L.O.B.S.T.E.R mode sneak peek!

Konnichiwa! It’s been just over a week since we launched Nippon Marathon into Early Access and we’ve been blown away by the love out there for our game. So first of all, a big thank you to everybody who’s picked up Nippon Marathon, who’s played it, or who has simply watched one of the many videos and streams. It’s about time for our first developer update from Wedy Jones, don’t you think?
Right now we’re busy beavering away on a number of fixes and additions for Nippon Marathon in the coming weeks. Having now amended the Mac boot-up problem we’re looking into a hotfix for a controller issue some people have been experiencing, and we’re tweaking some settings to fix a couple of scoring issues (in particular involving the elevators on Super Ichiba Sweep!) as well. Content-wise, there’s a LOT on the horizon. Firstly, the support from Japanese gamers has been off the charts! Our first addition to Nippon Marathon therefore will be to add Japanese commentary and also localized text for Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese. You can expect to see this added in the coming weeks. That language update is then going to be very closely followed by our first Party Game! And we wanted to give you a peek right now.
Meet L.O.B.S.T.E.R Mode: think of it as a cross between Tony Hawk’s classic HORSE party game mode and the Super Smash Bros Melee sandbag-thwacking Home-Run Contest… with a Nippon Marathon-styled running twist. In L.O.B.S.T.E.R Mode you play as contestants in a Game Show hosted by 'Surfin' Jack Cactus. He just loves to pit people against each other and award letters to the losers: Don't let Jack spell out L.O.B.S.T.E.R for you or you're outta the game!
For now, feast your eyes on some early prototype screens (yes, starring some fresh characters) – it won’t be too long before we’ll be letting L.O.B.S.T.E.R Mode loose into the Early Access build…
