85% off in the Steam SHMUP Fest

Cycle 28 is 85% off as part of the Steam SHMUP Fest!

The second game we released, and if I'm honest the one I'm most proud of. It's the only game I've ever worked on that almost made a streamer cry because it took them back to their childhood. It was the first game by a Welsh studio to be released on Nintendo Switch which led to be being nominated for a BAFTA. You have just six minutes to beat your high score and the fantastic track our composer wrote for us lets you know exactly how long you have left without needing to look at the clock.

Here is a video review which will give you an idea if the game is for you or not...

Play Captain Contraption's Chocolate Factory in the Steam Puzzle Fest

You can now play the demo for our next game Captain Contraption's Chocolate Factory by visiting the store page using the link below. Its an open ended factory, automation style puzzle game.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2166920/Captain_Contraptions_Chocolate_Factory/

Using a simple set of tools youll need to automate production of a variety of sweet treats like chocolate covered toasted almonds. The game plays sort of like a mix between a programming game like Opus Magnum, a factory game like factorio and a contraption maker game like The Incredible Machine.

Check it out and let us know what you think!

Cycle 28 is part of the Going Rogue Festival

We are super excited that our intense space dogfight simulator is on sale as part of the Going Rogue Festival.

Cycle 28 is a small game we are both super proud of. If you enjoy score attack retro arcade games this one could be for you. There are a bunch of upgrades to unlock and a mystery to solve. If you aren't sure check out this review on Nintendo Life.

"Cycle 28 disguises itself as a solid arcade shooter with minimalist aesthetics but slowly reveals itself to be something far beyond that. It successfully manages to engulf the player in the mystery that led to the player character's current predicament and entices you to seek the truth, find answers to questions you didnt know existed and attempt to break the cycle and who knows, maybe freedom and a happy conclusion? We rarely get to play video games where each Game Over offers the possibility to solve a mystery, so we kept coming back to it again and again - and so will you."

Making it Home Released Today

Did you hear? Did you see? Pill Bugs next game Making it Home launches today!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1098220/Making_it_Home/

Whether you enjoyed the bare-knuckle lo-fi thrills of Cycle 28, or the chilled joy of watching something of yours grow in Intelligent Design, we think Making it Home has something for you.

And it starts with testing your vehicle building skills against the full range of twisty routes, tricky obstacles, and fiendish boss encounters that Sean and I have come up with. In doing so, youll unlock brand new achievements and challenge modes.

Were finally letting everyone loose on the games full branching narrative too. Will you uncover the truth behind whats happening to this ladybug and her animal family? And what relationships will you make or break along the way?

Sean and I cant quite believe weve made it this far. Its been three amazing but challenging years developing this game. We couldnt be prouder of what the whole team has achieved. And we couldnt have done it without the help and support of our amazing community here on Steam.

Thats you, that is. Thank you.

I hope you enjoy Making it Home as much as we have.

Making it Home is part of the Remote Play Together Event

In our most recent update to our next game Making it Home we added local co-op. That gave us the chance to be part of the remote play together event Valve has been running the past few days.

If you haven't checked it out yet, Making it Home is a vehicle building game where your vehicle is your base. Design it, drive it, automate it and defend it as you travel from one side of America to the other.

As part of the remote play together event the game is on sale, plus we ran a developer stream which you can currently watch a replay of over on the store page.

July & August Monthly Leaderboards

You know what they say, better late than never!

Apologies for the delay, folks, but it's been a super busy summer for us at Pill Bug. As well as a super strange one, obviously.

But all the while folks have been enjoying Cycle 28 and posting some mighty fine scores. So, without further ado, here's the scores for July:

Whoa. Those are some serious numbers right there.

August was a little more modest on the score front. Maybe people were out enjoying the sunshine?

We're back on top of things here, so expect regularly monthly leaderboard posts to resume.

Our vehicle building game Making it Home is now available!

Im super excited to announce that our vehicle building game Making it Home is now available in Early Access on Steam (currently 15% off!)

Weve been working on it for a while now and are super proud of it. Its something we had the idea for 3 years ago. In Making it Home you are a ladybug building a marvellous contraption to travel from one side of America to the other. As you travel youll unlock new components to build your vehicle and discover ways of making them work together. Youll meet lots of different characters and face different challenges to push your design skills. Then when you just want to chill out and optimise some designs weve added some challenge modes with leaderboards for that.

Its the biggest game weve made and it would be great if you check it out today and join us for the Early Access journey!

June 2020 Monthly Leaderboard

June Top 5:

We hope everyone is staying safe and well. Wherever you are in the world, chances are your June has been affected by the pandemic somehow. For some this will include changes to how we engage with games and the hobby of gaming. I know it's changed the way Sean and I play games right now.

So it's just awesome to see two mainstays of the Cycle 28 leaderboards continue to post excellent scores, as well as seeing some new names in the Top 5.

May 2020 Monthly Leaderboard

May Top 5:

May, for many people, was another month in some form of lockdown. We hope everyone is staying safe and well. It was also a month of huge protest and upheaval as events in the USA reverberated around much of the world.

In times like these, games and other such activities can feel insignificant or a luxury. And we think it's okay to feel that way - we know friends and family who have stopped their hobbies or playing games because now just doesn't feel like the time. But we also know many people take solace and comfort in the escapism and structure games can provide. For so many people, gaming is a core part of their identity and community.

In the last weeks and months, the varied communities that we are lucky to be part of have really pulled together and done some amazing things (check out our social media streams if you'd like to know more).

Stay safe, everyone, and look after each other.

April 2020 Monthly Leaderboard

Like last month, April was no doubt a very difficult month for a lot of people. We hope everyone is staying safe and well.

Sean and I are both finding a lot of solace in games right now, and we imagine many of our players are too. High scores, levelling up, getting achievements, etc - it all feels like a very welcome distraction.

So, without further ado, here's April's top 5:

Some really impressive scores there, from consistent pilots and new names alike! Well done, folks, and good hunting for May.

March 2020 Monthly Leaderboard

March was . . . March was indescribable. I have no pithy, witty way to talk about it.

All I can say is, Sean and I are (and continue to be) proud and grateful that people are playing games we produce. This really hits home in times like these.

Our top 5 for March:

We hope you all stay safe and well.

BAFTA Cymru nomination for Cycle 28!

We are super proud to announce that Cycle 28 has been nominated in the BAFTA Cymru Game category!

It's still not really sunk in that we're one of three great games in the running this year. Sean and Dave will be attending the big ceremony (once they've tracked down some new formal wear ...) so expect some pics of two awkward devs in suits on a red carpet!

But mostly we wanted to thank everyone in the Cycle 28 community - without your support, we would never have even finished this game, let alone have it nominated for something. You're all the best!

Cycle 28 Now Available on Linux and Mac!

Good news everyone!

We have just launched Linux and Mac ports of Cycle 28 here on Steam.

If you are new to Cycle 28 its a fast-paced space shooter with screen-shaking explosions and a mystery at its heart. In the game you play as Lieutenant Olivia Bergen, stuck living the same day over and over, trying to figure out who the enemy are, what they want, and how to get home.

Nintendo Life reviewed the Nintendo Switch version of the game giving it 8/10 saying "..we kept coming back to it again and again - and so will you.

Looking forward to even more competition on the leader boards!

September Monthly Leaderboard Results

Wait, what, September results?

...

Where did September go, amiright?

I guess time flies, if you're not stuck in a time loop. Fortunately, more and more players are breaking themselves out of that loop (congrats to those players!)

Perhaps all that work is why the scores for September were a little on the modest side? Here's the top 5:

Still great to see new names each month!

What about the ongoing rivalry between myself and Sean? I'm afraid we took a month off from chasing scores, as we worked on promoting the new update for our first game. Call it a "cooling down period". We'll be back posting mediocre scores in no time.

After 5 months, 14 days, 6 hours the Cycle 28 mystery has been solved

The ARG-esque community puzzle involved hunting through ship logs, hidden stories, local libraries, and artisanal coffee videos

We are extremely excited to announce that a member the Cycle 28 community, Sam from Australia, has claimed the first ever Pill Bug Golden Ticket!

Having solved the mystery of Cycle 28, Sam explained step-by-step how they broke Flight Lieutenant Olivia Bergen - the game’s protagonist - out of the time loop, becoming the first person to see the end credits. Sam was very grateful to many members of the Cycle 28 community in helping them reach the solution. As well as a bunch of Pill Bug goodies and prizes, Sam will get every Pill Bug game we ever make!

We’re not going to tell you exactly how the mystery was solved, that’s up to Sam, but we will say all the community’s hard work in finding the codes, cracking the cipher, and keeping each other going made a huge difference. If you aren't part of the discussion already, check out our Discord channel:

To celebrate Sam’s achievement, we are putting Cycle 28 and Intelligent Design on sale on Steam from August 27th to September 3rd!

This isn’t the end for Cycle 28, of course. Can you figure out how Sam solved the mystery? Will it take you 5 months, 14 days, and 6 hours? And there’s still plenty of competition to be had on the leaderboards. We’ll see you there.

July Monthly Leaderboard Results

It's been quite the summer so far for Cycle 28!

Sean and I continue to be amazed by the support players show the game, and July's leaderboard scores are testament to just that.

Just look at those numbers!

ThereIsNoHope continues their dominance from last month. Both they and Haystack broke the 20k mark in impressive style. And a shout out to streamer Stealelves for the respectable 3rd place finish - go check out their stream for Cycle 28 action, amongst other games.

August is well underway, but there's plenty of time to push those scores.

Good hunting, Lieutenant!

June Monthly Leaderboard Results

It's hot, hot, hot here in the UK as summer really kicks in! I don't know about anyone else, but my trigger finger is pretty sweaty in these temperatures... At least, that's my excuse for not winning this month's leaderboard. What's yours?

There's one person who doesn't need to answer that, of course, and that's this month's winner: ThereIsNoHope!

With that kind of scoring for June, I guess there really was No Hope for the rest of us.

Congratulations, ThereIsNoHope! Get in touch either on our Discord or email us at: dave@pillbug.zone to claim your June Leaderboard Prize!

For anyone interested in how Sean and I fared in June, I'll just leave this here:

Cycle 28 @ Arcade Vaults' Indie Game Showcase

This month our dev-shoot out is a little different. We were lucky enough to participate in the Acade Vaults' Indie Game Showcase earlier this week. I was given the challenge to set a score live on periscope.

Did I live up to that challenge I hear you cry? Click this link to find out!

Patch Notes 12th June 2018

We just uploaded a patch to fix issues found in the text of the game. We are aware some of these changes may affect earlier efforts by players, and can only apologise for that. The fixes are as follows:

Cycle 27. Bergen. The signal's faint, but I'd know that voice anywhere: my boy. [&!|#P29_L2_W7&!|#]
I'm not going crazy.

Now reads:

May Monthly Leaderboard Results

Doesn't time just fly when you're... stuck in an endless loop?

May is officially behind us, and with it our first full month of the Monthly Leaderboard system. The feedback we've been getting from players suggests its huge hit!

So, for those of you who don't know, here's how the top 5 shook down:

Competition got pretty fierce there at the end. Congratulations to Haystack for not only topping the Monthly Leaderboard, but the Global Leaderboard as well! Not to mention being the first player to break the 20k points mark!

But sometimes bragging rights and leaderboard domination isn't enough.

Sometimes you need prizes.

So we've sent some Pill Bug Swag™ to Haystack for his impressive win. And we'll be doing the same for June's winner!

Who's it going to be? Could it be you? Could it be Sean?

Apparently, anything is possible...

Know Your Enemy - Cycle 28

I don't know their names. At least, I don't know what they call themselves. I know what I call them. Most of the time that name is surrounded an expletive or two. They're nothing fancy, mind. I don't have time in a cycle for anything fancy.

Why? What do you call them?

[b] Enemy Fighters

Carrier

Gunship

Interceptor

Shieldship

[b] Enemy Bosses

Big Train

Dreadnought

Laser Arm

Laser Trench

Cycle 28 Won a Fan Favourite Award!

We're super-happy-smiley today at Pill Bug, because Cycle 28 won fan favourite in last week's Games Development World Championship!

A huge thank you to everyone who voted on the GDWC site!

There's plenty of competition left, and we'll keep you posted as it progresses. But if you want to keep right up to date with all Pill Bug's news why not signup to our mailing list over at pillbug.zone?

We were up against some fantastic games from around the world, so we are really excited to represent Wales/UK in such a global competition. As one UK game dev commented, we were the only submission that week to provide a gif - and we all know how persuasive a good gif can be! Perhaps this was the difference maker?

Patch Notes 3rd May 2018

I just pushed out a patch with some general performance improvements. It started out that I wasn't happy with the load time between runs, and turned into a week of tweaking!

  • Load time into a game is reduced, meaning it's even harder to stop playing!
  • Drones which don't encounter the player after 30 seconds are removed
  • General performance improvements to the drone AI
  • General performance improvements to particle system

Let us know what you think!

There are just a few days left to vote for Cycle 28 in the GDWC fan favourite competition. If you enjoy Cycle 28 please consider voting.

Pill Bug Talk Cycle 28 with Tanked Up Cast!

This week Sean and I were lucky enough to be invited onto the Tanked Up Cast. We talked craft beer, game development, and Cycle 28.

We went pretty deep into the development process, with some great discussion of decisions that went into Cycle 28. What went well, what didn't go so well, and what we learned along the way.

We also learned that we can never call ourselves beer connoisseurs! Perhaps the biggest takeaway was that we need to listen to Tanked Up more - as do the rest of you!

Check out Tanked Up episode 115, available wherever you get your podcasts!

Monthly Leaderboard Patch

These patch notes are going to be short and sweet...

We have just added monthly leaderboards to the game. Restart Steam to force the update. Looking forward to seeing even more competition over high scores, who is consistant enough to stay on the top each month, and who just got lucky?

A Month After Release and Still No Solution

Yesterday marked one month from the release of Cycle 28. In so many ways we've been blown away by the response from players, reviewers, and the growing Cycle 28 community.

But one of the most exciting things for us as devs has been watching the monumental effort put into the puzzle of Cycle 28 by a number of players. It's been fantastic to watch the collective efforts, info sharing, theories, etc, in our discord channel and here on Steam.

So much work done, but still so much to do it would seem. We still haven't had a solution to the mystery of Cycle 28, so we haven't been able to award the Pill Bug Golden Ticket.

It's only been a month, so we haven't given up hope - and neither has the community...

Good hunting, Lieutenant!

We will be showing Cycle 28 in Cardiff this weekend!

Dave and I will be at the Arcade Vault's Player Nation event this Saturday in Cardiff. If you are local it would be great to say hi. We will be giving away some Pill Bug Interactive goodies, some for free and others which you'll have to work for by getting high scores on Cycle 28.

Launch Week Round Up

It's been a hectic week here at Pill Bug HQ. There have been ups and downs. We first want to thank our amazing community for being there for us throughout everything. It has been exciting watch things heat up on the leaderboard, rivalries have already formed on twitch and on the discord.

We have seen an amazing number of YouTubers and steamers play the game, so many that we decided to make an highlight reel to say thank-you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWaXRVgZ8Pc

Apologies to those who we couldn't fit in this short video. Everyone has been fantastic! Please, please, go support the great channels featured in that video. One video that wasn't included in that highlight reel was Brave Sir Oingo who made the amazing video review below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FPXrf2Le_w

For the final video of the week, after spending most of the week sat on the couch watching other people play Cycle 28, Dave and I decided we needed to play it ourselves and show you guys how it's done.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6svYV-qetbg

We have also been lucky enough to have had some amazing written reviews. A highlight is this one by the Welsh Gaming Network.

Thanks for sticking with us, we appreciate the support. If you pick up the game make sure to let us know what you think!
