Lingotopia 1.1 is out now! To celebrate the release Lingotopia is also 17% off for one week! This is a free update for those of you who own the game already and includes many new features, languages and bug fixes. Here are some of the changes:
- Multiple save games allow you to learn more than one language at a time.
- There are many new words to discover by exploring the city. Some of them will be available on your first play-through, however, some of them will only be visible after beating the game and starting again with your existing vocabulary.
- There is more cause and affect for your actions. You'll also be notified when your answer to a question changes the game's story.
- New languages! You can now learn Arabic by playing the game! There are also many more community translations. Tlingit, for example, is an endangered language spoken in the USA and Canada.
Hello! A new update with several bug fixes is live.
- Turkish special characters are now rendered properly.
- Player was able to jump on top of objects like the market stall.
- No longer are the red words to learn made bold when learning Japanese and Chinese in their native scripts. More complex characters became difficult to read.
- It was not possible to learn the word for piano, guitar and drums.
- Player speed no longer depends on performance.
- When talking to people, two of the three options to click on were sometimes the same word.
- When talking to people, sometimes one of the options could be the word "don" or "t" (the game was actually splitting the word "don't".
- Voice recording volume has been levelled further.
Hello everyone! I'm embarrassed to say that I didn't realise so many people would hate Lingotopia's controls. I'd gotten so used to them in the hundreds of hours I'd spent testing the game. In any case, I take all of your feedback to heart and have been hard at work implementing a different control scheme and less restricting camera. You'll no longer feel like a "tank". I hope you enjoy the game more with each update! There is still more planned for Lingotopia and I won't rest until I've made up for the shoddy launch. Thanks for reading and playing, Tristan
Hello everyone! Lingotopia has just been updated with some minor fixes and major changes to the way the camera works. The camera is still a work in progress and more improvements are incoming, but you can now rotate the camera by moving the mouse to the edge of the screen and not by clicking and dragging. You can also rotate the camera while walking. Bugfixes:
- You may have seen the guide walk on water or jump up rocks, essentially taking illegal shortcuts to get places. This no longer happens.
- The player no longer just stops when you walk into an object, you now "glide" off of objects in the environment.
- Levelled Japanese audio so all characters talk at the same volume.
Hello everyone! The second patch is now live. It contains several bugfixes.
- No longer will words you don't know be marked purple and translate as "ERROR" when learning Japanese.
- Lithuanian font had missing characters.
- Walking citizens speech bubbles display a little longer.
- Sound volume slider now affects audio recording volume as well.
- Player collider is smaller so you should no longer get stuck as easily.
Hello everyone, I just uploaded a new build that should fix some issues you may have run into.
- Fixes several bugs, most notably you should no longer be able to get stuck while speaking to characters in Japanese
- Esperanto and Norwegian both had missing characters in the font.
- Items in dictionary should no longer overlap
- Japanese dictionary no longer displays particles as "NT(topic marker)", but as "topic marker".
- When learning the word for boat, the boat will stop moving. I always thought it looked kind of cool if it sailed off screen, but this should be clearer.

Lingotopia is a language learning game about being lost in a city where you don't speak the language. Learn Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish and more! You play a little girl shipwrecked on the shores of a strange island. In order to get back home you'll need to explore the island and talk to its inhabitants. Sadly, no one speaks your language! You'll have to learn words one at a time to decipher what these strange creatures are saying.
How does it work?
- Explore a lovingly handcrafted city.
- Click on objects in the environment and your guide will teach you the word for them.
- Learn words by talking to the city's inhabitants.
- Voice recordings by native speakers teach you the correct pronunciation.
- Learning a language with a different script? Toggle between the romanised and native script at any time.
Words you know can be translated when they appear during conversations. So, the more words you know, the more you'll begin to feel at home in this strange place. You might even be able to find a way off the island!
Will this really help me learn a language
Yes! Learning words is the most important part of language learning. You can learn several hundred words by playing Lingotopia. As the game only translates individual words and not entire sentences, you also learn word order and grammar by playing. All dialogue in the game is tied to the setting and story, so you have a reason to decipher each and every sentence. What languages can I learn?
The official languages are Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish. You can learn English in each of these languages. There are also over 20 "unofficial languages", these don't have voice recordings and I won't be able to vouch for the accuracy of the translations. I will keep an up to date list of the included unofficial languages at https://www.lingoludo.com/lingotopia/.- OS: Ubuntu
