My Colony is a space colonization and city building simulation game. Start with a small landing craft on a barren and desolate world, and build it up into a thriving space empire!

My Colony is all about building your city and managing all of it's various aspects, from resources, employment, education, housing, happiness, and more. You can start on a relatively simple earth-like planet, or choose from some of the more brutal and inhospitable worlds for an added challenge. There are also four unique civilizations to choose from, each with their own tech and building trees.

My Colony can be played in either online or offline mode. Online mode requires an Ape Apps account, and allows you to found your colony under the government of another player, who will help take care of you and send you resources and aid in the early game. Once you grow and your civilization becomes self-sufficient, you may declare independence and even take new child colonies under your own wing as the leader of a commonwealth of planets.

In offline mode, there is still limited multiplayer over a local area network. You may exchange resources and send messages between other players on the same LAN.

In My Colony, you can create either a single city game, or create a new region, which is a collection of smaller colonies working together in tandem, sharing a similar resource and technology pool. Each play mode offers a unique style and different challenges.

Finally, My Colony also includes both a map and texture editor, so that you may mod and customize the game as you see fit. You can even export your game modifications and share them with others!

My Colony 2 Announcement

The original My Colony was released on May 16, 2016. At that point I had no real idea in what direction I was going to take the game. In my head it was going to be some sort of strange mix between Command and Conquer, Sim City and Age of Empires. I kept working at it though, and with the help of a ton of user feedback, My Colony became what it is today.

In 2020, I started working on a 3D voxel art-based sequel to the game which never really left the beta/development phase. I had major performance issues related to the voxel style artwork. Additionally, I got a lot of user feedback about how the game was missing many of the more beloved features from the original. Throughout the past few months, I have been discussing with the Discord community options for the My Colony sequel going forward, and I eventually decided to scrap the voxel-based game altogether (if you are interested in checking it out though, I am hosting it for free now on the web as MC2 Classic ).

The original MC2 attempt was not in vain though, because I learned a lot from the process on how to make a true sequel to the game that will live up to and surpass the original. So, work has begun and it is my goal to have the game, at least in an early-access type state, ready to go by the 10-year anniversary of My Colony on May 16, 2026!

Now I\'m not promising it will happen exactly on that day, but that is the goal and I think it would be awesome. I will be working hard to make it happen, but if the game isn\'t ready then it\'s not ready. I think it\'s very possible though. So now I would like to discuss some of the plans for the upcoming game, what it will look like, and what you can expect.

The core gameplay will feel very familiar to fans of the original My Colony. Although the graphics are moving from 2D to 3D, I am attempting to keep a very similar aesthetic to the original, as I think the MS-Paint style visuals have a certain charm to them. You should be able to look at the game and immediately know that it\'s My Colony.

The resources and world types available will be a mixture between what is in My Colony 1 and what I introduced in the first MC2 attempt. The tech tree will be similar, but I am making some adjustments and rebalancing things. I might scale back or delay a lot of the alien tech type structures, I haven\'t decided exactly yet. I will see what feels right during testing.

The worlds are going to work as if a My Colony single map and a Region were combined into one. Utilizing an improved version of the world chunking system I wrote for the original MC2 attempt, the game will actively simulate the area directly around the current camera position and do a more efficient background simulation for areas which are further away. Based on my testing of this system with the voxel-based MC2, the new My Colony 2 should be able to easily handle extremely large colonies.

Map sizes are not fixed. Rather, you can \"purchase\" chunks of land around your colony, similar to how the Annex Land policy currently works in My Colony, except that you can purchase chunks in any direction, and you can see the chunks available (and what resources they contain) prior to purchase. In theory there is no hard-set limit on how much you can expand your colony, although testing will reveal the real practical limits. If you have played the old voxel-based MC2 though, you know that the world sizes can be potentially massive.

The game simulation is now multithreaded, which offers an extreme performance improvement over the original My Colony. Considering the multi-threaded nature of the game and the fact that graphics now utilize the GPU (instead of the CPU software renderer of the original), most players can expect massively improved performance, particularly on large colonies. The exception may be for users with no GPU, although I am doing all testing right now using a Ryzen 7 5000 series mini-pc (basically laptop hardware) and integrated Radeon graphics, and it runs fine with all settings enabled. Of course, I will include options to turn down graphics intensive things like shaders and real-time shadows, as well as a way to turn down rendering resolution so that the game should run good even on a potato.

The game features a full built-in game editor, which is in fact the exact same editor I am using to create all of the content for the game. This will allow for the creation of user generated content (at least for offline games).

The simulation in My Colony 2 will give you considerably more control over your production chains, if you want to take advantage of it. The game\'s day/night cycle (now pegged to exactly 10 minutes in IRL time) is now broken up into three work shifts. You will have the option to run your production buildings 24/7 or set up shift schedules. You might want to take advantage of this for several reasons. Some structures (like solar panels) now require sunlight to operate. To balance power loads, you can shut down power hungry factories at nighttime. Just as an example.

Online trading is coming back but will work a little different. To me it doesn\'t make any logical sense that you can just \"teleport\" resources from one world to another. Of course, it\'s a game so who cares, but I care and I wanted to try something different. So, My Colony 2 is going to utilize starships which you can use to send resources or even colonists directly to another colony. You will be able to send them on one-time missions or set up automated trade routes.

There is a lot more to talk about when it comes to My Colony 2, and I will be releasing a lot more information over the coming months. Stay tuned here on the My Colony Steam community for updates or join the Ape Apps Discord. At some point I will create a Steam product page for My Colony 2, and I will announce that here when it happens. Until then though, I will post MC2 updates here and keep you all informed as to how development is coming along!

The Dark Franklin Arcology Has Arrived

Some players do not care about the My Colony premium structure series, and if that is the case for you, then pay no mind to today\'s update. Originally released two years ago though, the Franklin Arcology has probably been the favorite premium structure among the players, and the one which I get the most requests for a re-release on. Since I did announce at the beginning of the premium structure feature that I would not be doing any re-releases, I couldn\'t simply just put the original Franklin Arcology back out there. However, it\'s dark evil twin is fair game, so available from now until the end of the year, the Dark Franklin Arcology is now available for Ape Apps Account users to purchase in-game!

The stats on the Dark Franklin are similar to the original, although there are a couple of buffs added to this release. It\'s population capacity has been increased by 5,000 (for a total of 35,000) and it is also available to be built by all factions in the game, even the Zolarg and Alpha Draconians.

\nI haven\'t been adding a whole lot of premium structures to the game lately, I just don\'t know if players are interested in them enough for it to be worth my time. So if you\'d want to see more content like this, be sure to let me know. I\'ve also had players ask me about adding Steam Trading Cards to the game, which is something I really don\'t know much about but if there is interest from the community I will look into it more.

\nIn the meantime though, enjoy the new structure! I\'ve also added an Aluminum Road - Lit variation to the premium structures list, but it will be available for several years, so it\'s not exactly a limited time offer like this one.

My Colony v2.4.0 Released

The v2.4.0 patch for My Colony is now available and includes a few important changes that you should be aware of, so let\'s take a look at it.

The biggest change is with the built-in global chat for the game. It has previously been powered by my Ape Chat online service, but due to new age verification laws that are coming online right now all across the globe, I have decided to shut that service down. As a result, the in-game chat now uses the same relay server that the Galactic Board of Trade uses for trade notifications, which still supports real time chat, but messages are no longer stored and logged. This means that if you sign on, you can\'t pull out the old chat sidebar or see a history of chat messages from when you were offline.

The other big change in this update is for macOS players of the game (all 2 or so of you). The macOS client was previously compiled for Intel x86 64bit CPUs, but since most of the Apple players are now using Apple Silicon PC\'s, the macOS build it now compiled for Apple M series ARM CPUs. This means that Apple Silicon users should now get better native performance from the game, but Intel CPU users are now SOL. If you are still on an Intel mac, head over to the Ape Apps Discord channel (there is a link within the game), and I can hook you up with an Intel binary.

Finally, I think the game should be fully working in offline mode now, although you may have to start it in online mode at least one time first. I am not sure; I tried it back and forth several times and I am pretty sure it\'s working but let me know if you still have issues. My goal for the game is for it to be fully playable without a connection, so that when I get hit by a bus and the server goes under the game will still work.

Oh, and one more thing. Some of you are aware that for a few years I have been working on a 3D voxel-based sequel for My Colony. I have decided to scrap that endeavor and start over from scratch on a proper My Colony 2 that is worthy of the name. My Colony Steam Achievements Are Live!

I\'ve got some good news for all of you My Colony fans out there, at long last all of the game\'s achievements (previously only available on mobile) are now available on Steam and ready for you to unlock!

I apologize to everyone for the years long delay on getting these over to Steam. This was mainly a product of my laziness since I had to recreate all of the graphics assets for all of the achievements, but I finally sat down and did it this afternoon and now everything is good to go.

My Colony v2.3.0 Released

My Colony v2.3.0 is now live, and you should be able to update your client in Steam right now. Along with the standard bug fixes and dependency updates, this release includes a significant change in which the game is packaged.

Previously, My Colony on Steam was released with the bare minimum shell of it\'s game data, and would automatically download all of the latest game files when launched. I have decided now that I would start packaging the entire game content bundle with each release. This way if I end up getting hit by a car or all of my servers go down, future players will still be able to download and enjoy My Colony long after I\'m gone.
