Our team has made a long overdue update to the game in celebration of our non-profit's latest release, Trade Bots! Along with several bug fixes, performance improvements and upgrades to modern frameworks, we've added several new features, all in widescreen mode. (by default, the game opens in a vertical window, but you can full screen the game by hitting the expand button on all three platforms).
- Wolfram links no longer open externally, instead they open directly within the calculator viewport and can be controlled within the game.
- Discord has been integrated natively (using the above method). We had honestly not been that familiar or comfortable with discord, but have come to find it's a wonderful way to engage directly with the community. We're closely monitoring the server and hope it continues to thrive.
- Embeds of some of our favorite podcasts are now integrated directly into the game for you to listen to while playing or making your own levels.
- The UI in wide mode has changed to include six buttons instead of four.
- New keybindings to make the game even more friendly on desktop.
The Devil's Calculatoris a captivating math puzzle game based on a narrative in which an evil calculator has had its normal arithmetic operators replaced with sadistically obscure functions. Using logic and a bit of algebra, you must work backwards to find the equation for the "number of the beast," 666, at each level. Innovative and addicting, this game will appeal to numberphiles and math novices alike. The award-winning Devil's Calculator was chosen as a PAX Top 10 Indie Game in 2019. Hi Everyone, This is Chris, the lead developer. I'm so pleased to announce that after a considerable hiatus, we were able to find the time and resources to integrate a few features we've been wanting to add for a long time. One of the biggest points of feedback we received was the somewhat tedious menu system - we made an artistic decision to try and go for an analog / diegetic feel with the menus, and that became frustrating for players, particularly with the DLC content. The first thing we did was create a simple action sheet that can be accessed by holding down "levels" or by hitting "help" and pressing the "7" key, which now has a hamburger icon on it. This menu will provide access to an ordered list of all the DLC levels for easy navigation, as well as.... a new game mode just in time for the school year! I had always wanted to develop an engine that could procedurally generate levels for the game, but wasn't sure how to approach it. Eventually, I got frustrated and just started tinkering, After a lot of trial and error, this new build represents the first pass at that engine. It doesn't support the OEIS function, and much work needs to be done to improve my approach, but it seemed to give me a good challenge when I was play testing it. As far as adding more levels to the main game (beyond the DLC) the reality is that very few players, extremely few in fact, are ever able to finish the main campaign - so we thought taking the approach of building an engine that can adapt to a difficulty the player is comfortable with and dynamically create new levels would be a better long term goal. I'd like to stress that this new play mode was done in a kind of wonky way, I'm almost a bit embarrassed to share the code (which I will update soon) because it does some sloppy things and gets semi-mixed results, so I welcome any ideas on how to better generate levels. I'll go into detail on how it works in a later post that I'll make sure to share here. Also, out of an abundance of caution, I've created a new public branch called "previous" where the previous build can be accessed just in case there are some bugs. We obviously play tested a fair amount, but you never know! Last, I'd like to say I love this game, and have loved my time working on it. I am so thankful to the rich community of players who have engaged with the project and supported us. Your involvement and feedback has been invaluable and is always deeply appreciated. Please feel free to reach out to our non-profit any time (info@cinqmarsmedia.org) or on twitter at @cinqmarsmedia. We always love to hear from you, even if you're just saying "hi"! My Deepest Thanks, - Chris

Hi Everyone! Thrilled to share with you all that the Devil's Calculator was a selected as one of the PAX 10 indie games of this year. If you're going to be in Seattle Friday August 30th through Monday September 2nd, please stop to say hi! Additionally, we were recently featured at the Museum of Mathematics in New York City where I gave an in-depth presentation on the game for their MOVES conference. Highlights of the talk and new level tutorials can be seen here We also have a brand new free DLC level (one of my personal favorites) from the great Alex Bellos, bestselling author, numberphile regular and guardian puzzle contributor. The latest update features several bug fixes including improved font smoothing and faster performance. Thanks for all your support of this project and educational gaming in general! You guys are the best! - Chris
Hi Everyone! Excited to share our newest update with the community:
- New DLC by Tony Padilla and other mathematicians
- Deeper integration with Wolfram Alpha including custom hints, notebooks and scatterplots
- Wolfram MathWorld resources for all puzzles
- Interactive Tutorial added for first level
- Improved BigInt performance across the game
- Bug Fixes including issues with data persistence for DLC and community levels
- Wolfram Cloud API integration for advanced functionality
Hi Everyone! So thrilled and grateful for the positive feedback we've been getting on the game - we never expected it would gain such a following. We've been working around the clock to add tons of new features asked for by the community and lots of stability improvements, all outlined below!
- Free DLC section added with levels by famous mathematicians like James Tanton and James Grime!
- Tons of changes under the hood for vastly improved performance and responsiveness, - bottom to top refactoring plus lots and lots of bug fixes
- Ability to create and play community levels without beating the game.
- Community level system completely overhauled, now runs on Math.js:: this means levels can be far more sophisticated (i.e. complex numbers) with less programming and more intuitive syntax. Also far more stable and safer.
- Ability to copy formula history to the clipboard (by popular demand steamhappy)
- More seamless Wolfram alpha integration
- More intuitive menu design
- Lots of other subtle improvements and optimizations.
- Better help resources, including a new User Guide
Hi everyone! Due to popular demand, we're integrating an advanced math library (math.js) so that users can build even more sophisticated levels, easier. We're going to be switching over from javascript to the math.js eval syntax (which is much simpler) and we're including support for ternary operations so you can still do things like, (if the input is even, do this, else do that). This will add support for complex numbers, and more advanced features detailed here. This methodology will also be far more secure for building and downloading levels. Because we're switching over to this system imminently, I have disabled writing to the central server temporarily, meaning you will not be able to upload levels within the game until we release an update, (we're aiming for early next week). This has our full attention and we're confident it will be a much better system in the long run. In the meantime, please submit levels here or send them to me directly at info@cinqmarsmedia.com and I'd be happy to program them for you, and consider them for inclusion as DLC. Thanks!!
If you installed (or perhaps even played) the game between 4:30pm and 7pm today, Monday February 18th, there was a very strange bug that caused the game to break (slides wouldn't work and would flash, game would be unplayable). Around 4:30pm I was messing around with the backend, adding content and making fixes, and I broke something server side that caused this. I'm so, so sorry. If affected, it should fix itself on the next launch, but uninstalling and reinstalling will certainly fix it. If you were affected, drop me a message at info@cinqmarsmedia.com and I'll help make it up to you (free keys for this and other games, refunds etc...). I feel awful and so very stupid that I messed this up, the launch day on steam of all days..... If you're having any further issues, please let me know, and again, I'm so sorry.
