The Elementalist: ULTRA-SD!

The Elementalist has been updated to run in glorious

With 9X the pixels of the classic version you can really feel the heat from every fireball!

Every asset was meticulously re-drawn by hand and verified to contain 100% pure pixel power. While vastly updating the clarity and quality of the assets the game still keeps a consistent pixel art aesthetic with a unique retro style. So come in, check out the new gameplay trailer and images and bask in the absurd detail that ULTRA-SD brings! *ULTRA-SD updates the native pixel render size from the Amiga friendly 320x240 to a beastly 960x720!

ULTRA-SD Live Beta!

ULTRA-SD, the words that will one day be associated with the most premium of content... Prepare to be amazed at the clarity as The Elementalist unveils the future!
Seriously, thank you so much to all of the folks who came by The Elementalist boot at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo and shared your time! I wanted to be sure that those of you who pick up a copy get to play the same experience I was showing on the floor. I had an absolute blast meeting you all and will be back at the show tomorrow looking forward to meeting more great people! The new ULTRA-SD mode isn't 100% finished, so I'm not doing a major reveal yet but it's darn close and I hope you all enjoy it! As always if you run into trouble of any kind, reach out and I'll do my best to help. RaZoR.RoZe

Now with Steam Input Support!

A new release is out that should hopefully make it possible for everyone to enjoy their favorite game pad with The Elementalist! The Elementalist has been updated to include Steam Input support in addition to the raw XInput that it already worked with. This should mean that if your gamepad works with Steam Big Picture it should work with The Elemenatlist! If your gamepad was already working it should continue to work the same way but if you want to switch to using Steam Input that's cool too! Steam Input shouldn't cause screen flicker with high rates of controller re-scan (so if you disconnect it can pause the game when it detects that) and has a pretty nifty controller binding UI, plus it should support some controllers that don't support XInput. Just be sure that you have your controller plugged in before you launch the game or it doesn't seem to like to pass through the inputs when you eventually do. The raw XInput support remains unchanged and supports pretty much any XInput device (or combination of devices) imaginable so if you are happy with your setup you certainly don't need to change it up. I also tried to add helpful prompts to clarify when the game is detecting your controller as a Steam Input device or XInput device as well as some options to fix it up. As always if you have any troubles please let me know in the Steam Discussions! I published a default XBox controller profile and will try to round out some official controller profiles for other devices as I can, let me know if your favorite pad needs love. :-)

Secret, secret finder and dungeon quality of life updates

So you completed the game but you didn't find all of the secret secrets? No worries! Your old friend the Imp with the compass has something that might help you out. ;-) Also a few quality of life improvements to minimize time backtracking through difficult or time-consuming dungeon sections after you take a cheap shot and die! And a visual clue about that hard-to-find door in the last dungeon... don't forget your lucky coins!

Primary Keybindings, elemental use hints, and overly deep pockets

Just a few small fixes in:

  • Primary Keybindings were not saving properly; this should be fixed.
  • There are now hints about how to switch elements when you find a new element and how to use more powerful spells when you upgrade your elemental gems.
  • You should no longer be able to pick up more than you should in certain circumstances.
Cheers!

Hold the bone!

Meat that is consumed or wastes away now leaves a bone that can still be useful in some situations; just be sure an enemy doesn't break it and you don't either. The meat may be tough but the bones aren't! ;-) Addressed a couple minor nits with Sam's quest and added a little extra hint there for clarity. Also fixed a few nits with the pre-boss dungeon save points.

Map Scrolling Now Live!

The Map screen just received an upgrade to allow you to scroll the view and re-center it in order to get a better picture of the world, dungeon, secret passageway, or wherever you happen to be! Hopefully the new UI elements are pretty self-explanatory but be aware that once you select the "move" button (which looks like four arrows pointing in the cardinal directions) you will be in "scrolling" mode and can use the standard UI inputs for up/down/left/right to navigate the map view. You can exit scrolling mode by pressing any other UI button (exit/select/next/prev) and it will remain centered on wherever you scrolled to. If you want to re-center the view on the wizard just click the button between the zoom in and zoom out buttons and it should get you back to where you started (at whatever zoom level you currently have set). If you have any issues with the feature or absolutely love it to pieces let me know! Cheers!

Difficulty Selection

Just added a Difficulty selection to the Gameplay settings; if you are finding the game too hard or too easy (yeah right) then head on in there and give it a whirl! There's no penalty for adjusting (other than your own pride or shame) and it should take immediate effect so don't hold back!* * Actual results may vary, ask your doctor if difficulty selection is right for you, side effects may include serious injury or death

Keybinding on Mac minor update

Keybindings on Mac were not displaying all of the bound keys due to minor differences in the windowing tool-kits (read as: super not interesting technical reasons). This should now be fixed I hope. Thanks for the feedback in the discussions! If you aren't sure if something is working right please post a question and I will do my best to answer. There are also a couple great video reviews posted there if you aren't sure what the game is all about, check em' out! Cheers!

Day 1 minor patch

Just a quick patch to adjust a few dialog nits and add a bit more clarification text to a few of the quests. Big thanks to everyone who supported me in this along the way and to the day 1 video reviews (Zaxtor99 and Simple Combo), I am so grateful to you all. Always instructive to watch people play and see where things aren't clear. I can no longer see the forest or the trees on my own. ;-) If you get stuck or have some sort of issue please reach out in the discussions and I will do my best to help. Cheers!

  • The Elementalist is a retro-styled 2D action RPG featuring environmental puzzles and a sprawling world with numerous dungeons.

Step in to the pointy boots of a wizard who has awoken after a long sleep to find that evil is again afoot. Wander a vast world in search of ancient temples, hidden passageways, and lost treasures. Overcome enemies, traps, and puzzles that will test your skills and wits. Embark on an epic journey to reclaim your elemental powers. Seek out the hidden menace and restore peace to the land!

Inspired by the great games of the 80's and crafted by hand The Elementalist offers a fresh take on a classic genre!

    Featuring:
    • An over-world map consisting of 420 rooms.
    • Dozens of homes, caves, ruins, and other hidden locations spanning 200+ rooms.
    • 8 major dungeons with a total of 300+ rooms.
    • 16 spells (including 4 elemental forms).
    • 18 usable items.
    • Over 50 unique enemies.
    • 36 pieces of gear to find and equip.
    • Dozens of interact-able props.
    • Thousands of lines of snarky dialog to roll your eyes at.
    • Other numbers of things I didn't count!

The Elementalist has lots of snarky dialog to resonate with the aging gamer (cough, cough) but is appropriate for all audiences.
