It's May 24th, and six whole years have passed since They Breathe first appeared on Steam. As a small celebration, we figured it was high time we released the game's original soundtrack as well. So now there's nothing to stop you from listening to the somber main theme on repeat as you fall asleep, or even letting Kristian Johansson's gut-wrenching soundscapes accompany your next Fortnite stream. The first game that any of us ever released is called Residue; a five-year labor of love - and hate - that spawned seven careers in games (that we know of). It was rife with beginner's mistakes from the get-go, and time certainly hasn't done it any favors. But if there is one aspect of the game that has truly aged well, it's this: Joel Bille's very first video game soundtrack. To this day it's got some of his strongest melodies (which is saying something) and although the various themes cover a range of emotions and atmospheres, there is always this underlying sense of lament over the horrific fate of the Aral Sea and the communities that depended on it. At the same time, I find that I turn to this soundtrack for hope; for a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is so much worth fighting for.
